I dined here with my adult daughters on our first day in San Francisco. We really enjoyed it. We are actually from the Philadelphia area, so the name of the restaurant was familiar. It turns out the owner has Philly roots! Bar Jabroni is the kind of restaurant my daughters really like to find. Local, small, quirky and trying to do something interesting/different than others. It is a small place, but with several seating options. Everyone was friendly and happy to explain any items that were new to us. They also had daily specials, which we were happy to sample. One of my daughters has a fish allergy, and they were great about reassuring us that she would be safe with the dishes we ordered. We like to share dishes. We ordered the spring green, avocado and cotija cheese salad. We also had a really interesting mushroom, cheese, cured egg and herb dish. Both were unique (to me!) and tasty. Showed up for a drink and asked if we could sit at the open seating they had at the bar. Host said he could only seat us outside because "they had press showing up" that night. Rest assured there was no seating available outside. We kicked it off with the beef tartare (Szechuan peppercorn, kumquat, like, yes??), then tore through the house focaccia with whole milk ricotta. That bread was gone in seconds. The romanesco cauliflower was such a surprise hit - charred, nutty, saucy, crunchy - all of it. We have a wonderful friend who lives in Noe Valley and whenever we have an opportunity to meet him, we ask him to make a reservation at one of his favorite restaurants. Had an amazing time here! We made a reservation for 8:30 on a Thursday and arrived 10 minutes early and were promptly seated. The vibe inside is very romantic and dimly lit, perfect for a girls night or a date. All the staff we interacted with were very helpful and knowledgeable about the wines -- I'm not a huge wine person but was pleasantly surprised by all the glasses we ordered -- the skin contact was refreshingly light and fruity, and the red chardonnay was also light and not too dry. They paired very well with the food we ordered; we got the date and scallion pancake with whipped feta, the house focaccia with whipped ricotta, the japanese sweet potatoes with cured egg yolk and miso butter, and the steak with mushrooms and farro. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the scallion pancake (it was a tad too dry and I wish it was flaky instead of crispy) but everything else was fantastic!! The sweet potatoes tasted like a dessert because of the miso; almost like caramel. The steak was cooked very well and went perfectly with the creamy green goddess dressing and flavorful mushrooms. My husband and I had a great experience on our Friday night date at Bar Jabroni. We had to wait a bit for our reservation as the table wasn't ready. Overall, Bar Jabroni is a cool spot but the food was inconsistent. Since it opened, Bar Jabroni has been pretty hyped so my friend and I were excited to check it out. It was actually less busy than I expected and there were several bar seats that looked open for walk ins so maybe things are less busy now. It was also relatively easy to get a reservation as long as you make it in advance. During the pandemic, I was a big fan of Palm City and so I was excited when I heard the same people were opening this spot. The food menu is small but pretty interesting and honestly everything sounded good. We got: - Shrimp louie: I liked that this was served with both baby lettuces and old bay chips. I alternated between which one I ate each bite with but I realize now that making some kind of lettuce wrap with the chips inside the wrap might be even better. This was good though a bit one note. - Little gems with green garlic caesar dressing, snap peas, parmesan frico: this sounded really good but unfortunately both my friend and I agreed that it was almost inedibly salty. Maybe we should have said something (we didn't) but it just made it hard to eat. The salad was also pretty over dressed. Definitely a miss here sadly - Strozzapreti with pork sugo, sundried tomato soffritto, and pickled serranos: this was the winner of the night for sure. It was really good and a pretty unique pasta dish. The pasta was well made and quite chewy which went well with the porky sauce and the little pops of tomato, pickled chilis, and cipollini onions were awesome. The $30 price tag seems a bit high as this was also the smallest portion but it was very tasty. I would come back for this alone - Black cod with "crispy" potatoes: This was a huge miss also. The fish itself was pretty nicely cooked but the skin was not crispy at all and was really fishy (upon entering the restaurant, it smelled super fishy in a way that not even seafood restaurants do so it seems related). The potatoes were terrible and not crispy in the slightest. We didn't even eat them because they were so bad- the texture was rubbery and they lacked flavor. It supposedly included cabbage but it was hard to find and there was very little. Such a disappointing dish - Buttermilk and sesame cake: the pistachio pralines were so good and this dessert was great. Nice ending to the meal and quite a fun dessert to eat with the different components and textures They have an extensive wine by the bottle list and a few by the glass options too. The wine was good which is what I would expect and hope for. Service was pretty good and the pacing of the meal was nice too. It was mostly an enjoyable experience but when you are paying over $100 a person, it is very unfortunate that half the food was so lacking. I would come back for that pasta and to try the focaccia with ricotta which we didn't get this time around. It's possible some of the issues were just an off night but the issues were pretty glaring and in my opinion they shouldn't have sent out either the salad or the black cod and potatoes. read more

Arriving at Bar Jabroni for an early, weekday dinner reservation I'll admit that I wasn't taken with the decor. An article on Resy had described the space as "beautiful" and it was not. It looks like what it is, a small storefront restaurant in the Lower Haight which, when the restaurant is less than full, felt cold and not particularly inviting. But wait until the place is full (momentarily); it becomes an entirely different animal. I had another problem with that Resy article: they described Bar Jabroni as having a "relatively low" markup on wines. Looking for a bottle of something Pinot-equivalent we had difficulty coming in under $75. Finally, tiring of the search, we opted for a $90 bottle of red. The wines here may have a "relatively low" markup but it sure didn't feel like it. But let's get to the point of that 5-star rating. The food. The menu is a fever-dream combination of offerings, nothing I'd sit at home imagining I'd order for that night's dinner. A sampling of our order looked like this (with menu descriptions far more detailed): * Kampachi Crudo ($18), Spring Onion & Date Pancake ($16), Sweet Potatoes with egg; and Gnudi ($28) Each dish was a knockout, featuring unexpected and delightful flavor profiles. I really enjoy dining out on food that I can't and don't make at home. Bar Jabroni's fare qualifies. The kitchen here is the shining star. Bar Jabroni is a hip little restaurant with every table full on a weeknight evening and all looking and sounding like they were having a blast. I've been wanting to try this place because I love Palm City and it did not disappoint! I came on a Friday at 6:30pm with a party of 3 and it was busy and lively. Lots of people, all the tables were taken but there was some standing room. We got some drinks and waited about 30m for a table. I'm not a big wine person but I loved the Skin Contact Sauv Blanc-Riesling. It was a little sweet but not overly sweet. For the food, we got the kampachi crudo, green garlic and date pancakes, the braised wagyu and the roasted cabbage with salsa macha. We also got the strawberry tres leches cake for dessert. All the food was great but my favorites were the crudo, the beef cheeks and the tres leches! The crudo was beautiful with fresh fish and peas, the beef cheeks were perfectly fall apart tender and also flavorful, the dessert was so good and not too sweet. I would definitely come back! It's a cute spot for a date or a hangout with friends. Our waiters probably had a good laugh because we kept asking for another order. It's that good. We ordered family style and shared a bunch of plates and voted that the steak was the top entree. It could be sexy enough for a date night but it depends on the kind of vibe you guys prefer. Everyone here was super cool, the staff, the other guests...great vibes all around.
