The drinks came out really fast and they were good but a little too sweet, while the chips were good. The guacamole was very tasty, which turned out to be the best part of the meal. For our main entree we ordered their chicken quesadillas and tacos with carne asada (meat). The taste of both quesadillas and tacos were a little bland while the chicken had bitter aftertaste. There was no plan to eat at the mall and when I ventured to see what was on the second level, I found this wonderfully decorated and inviting Cantina! I enjoy the whole set up, the location and it pulled me in. The service was quick and the server was quite helpful. His suggestions were welcomed and the outcomes were wonderful. Had lunch at Cantina Catrina a couple of weeks ago. The esquites appetizer was really good, the rest of the food was average. The reason for the two stars is the 20% service charge that's automatically added to your check. It's pretty standard these days which is okay but the server stood by the table and watched us try to figure out the tip and chose not to let us know it was included in the total. So, we basically tipped on the total which already included a 20% service charge. We realized after we paid and called her back to the table to ask her. She said the restaurant takes 10% and the server gets 10%. Of note, when she brought the "check" which was on a handheld device, she called out what we had and the total so we never saw an actual breakdown. Seemed deliberate. Wouldn't go back and definitely wouldn't recommend. read more

I think the food here is pretty good. I had the enchilada and they were pretty good. The house salsa verde was a nice topping. The roasted corn is super tasty, and a really great appetizer option. Good to cut in 2 to share. Now, where they didn't grab me was the service and location. My first service issue was by phone. They closed at 10. I called at 9 to see if there was a wait. They said no, but made it clear that they close in an hour and that if we're not there soon, the kitchen wouldn't take the order. I was already in the area so I went anyways, and the staff clearly looked annoyed. We sat, waited about 10 mins for anyone to come over. When they did, they seemed new or just in a rush. Weren't sure about a few menu questions. We ordered cocktails that we had to remind them about after the food arrived. Just not great. Aside from the service, the spot is pretty cool. Skeletons all over. Conveniently located in Dadeland mall, so if you're shopping and want to have some Mexican food it works. The Catrina nachos were great! The carne asada tacos were mediocre. The margaritas were good because they were $15.95 for bottomless. However, without that special they are $10.95 each and they aren't worth that in my opinion. I asked the waitress for water which she never brought. All the food came out and I had nothing to drink (literally). She kept talking to the other tables she was taking care of and continued to ignore ours despite me waiving her down in which case she averted her eyes. Eventually we received more food and the food runner was kind enough to get me water. I asked for a refill and she ignored me again so I had to ask the bartender for more water. This place has lots of potential but clearly the service is seriously lacking. My recommendation is for the manager to walk to the tables and ensure that everyone is happy with their service and food. read more

My girlfriends and I chose to come here on the Taco Tuesday after it opened up and I couldn't have been happier about our experience. The first time I visited, I ordered the Shrimp Tacos on lettuce wraps. I love that they give you the option to make any of their plates vegan AND swap the tacos for lettuce wraps. Sometimes a girl likes to switch it up, ya know? The menu is fun and creative. All the kids plates are served on a fun toy like a dinosaur or a unicorn. All the other plates are huge. You can definitely come here and share all of the dishes here. My friends ordered the ceviche and it was also fantastic. My favorite part of the whole Cantina Catrina experience is the decor of the restaurant and the chocolate cake. The whole restaurant is decorated in a Dia de los Muertos theme. Feels almost like walking into Disney's Coco. There are sugar skulls everywhere and these gorgeous colorful lanterns all over the roof. The final bill is delivered in a coffin with a sugar skeleton holding the receipt. So freaking cute. Back to the chocolate cake for a minute tho. Four layers of delicious fudge and devils food cake and just one thin layer of raspberry syrup on the very bottom of the plate. Holy. Deliciousness. When we got there they told us the air conditioner was having problems... it was hot. Our server took a while to bring our drinks. He brought one of the orders wrong but we left it as is. first of all the atmosphere in this place is amazing they have a bunch of little statues everywhere that made the dinner experience honestly really fun and easy to strike up a conversation on a date with. We had little to no wait time and the food came out of the relatively good pace with super friendly staff who are eager to answer all our questions. We were there for the Happy Hour. The Frozen Margaritas were OK. We had the fajita quesadillas. My hubby didn't not like the taste and only ate half. I had the Nachos and they were just OK. Very little chorizo. The bill was the shocker. The waitress made a mistake and initially charged me for a bottle of wine instead of the glass. No biggie and she took it off. But then they added an 18% service charge prior to adding the tax. There was only 3 of us in our group so we were not a large party. Overall, the food & service were overpriced and underwhelming.
