Genuinely pleasant, not obnoxious, they know the menu and the restaurant well. They sling jibes with the regulars, have fun and move the food. Decor: Hideous, endearing and humorous. Decorated decades before the introduction of P.F. Changs slick sophistication, Canton China sets the bar for old school Chinese kitsch, replete with yards of off blue Formica, matching seashell seat backs and carpeting rejected from the casino. Curiously missing is the obligatory fish tank found in the front of most Chinese restaurants. Menu: Typical for the Genre. Menu is arranged with subheadings for chicken, beef, pork etc. There is a small bar in the front. Price:Cheap, and again typical for the genre. Food: Hot, tasty and well executed. Canton China has the large portion sizes people expect from this type of Chinese restaurant. A pleasant surprise is the complimentary sugar cookie for dessert in addition to the fortune cookie, a subtle and appreciated nod to the fact that fortune cookies don't taste good. Crowd: An eclectic mix of white collar types, elderly couples, teens and families looking for a cheap meal. Visiting Canton China leaves one with the impression of having "discovered" something special that maybe not everyone knows about. Move this restaurant to Ann Arbor or Royal Oak and it would be in serious danger of being overrun by hipsters. Bathrooms: Clean enough to use if the situation warranted it. The charm and personality of the restaurant somewhat make up for the sense of danger one feels using the bathroom. What exotic foreign diseases might lurk in such a lair? Overall: Highly recommended, Chinese restaurants have a tendency to be hit or miss. Just tried here today. Had small hot n sour soup. Was OK. Small chicken noodle soup. Good. Big chunks of chicken. Mongolian beef. Not what I'm use to. Use to it having only green onions ands onions this was like a veggie mixed with beef. Was good flavor but not a big fan of water chestnuts or mushrooms. Husband had chicken lo mein. Thin noodles. So, I was faced with the dilemma of finding a new Chinese restaurant that served eggrolls made with bean sprouts for my husband as Red Dragon, which had been his "go to" place for years, had just closed. We were VERY impressed. The order was to go and the eggrolls were fresh, hot and delicious. We ordered his other fav as well, sweet and sour chicken. Big pieces of chicken with a nice light batter and the sauce was not some congealed mess of fluorescent red color but much more natural and great tasting. We also ordered the combo Szechuan noodles, hot, and they were very good with lots of shrimp and veggies. Overall we had to admit that it was better than Red Dragon had ever been and we were happy to find it. read more

I think I found my spot! I've never had Chinese food in this area all of the 4 years that I've lived out here. I'd been craving it and said what the heck, who has the best reviews? So the place I planned on going to didn't register with my gps and it ended up sending me here instead- how weird is that. When I walked in one thing that concerned me was that it was so quiet and I was the only one at lunch time. Once I ordered thats when people started coming in. I went with the sweet&sour shrimp/chicken dinner since I wanted to split it with my husband. After tax it was 10 bucks but worth it because it fed a man and a pregnant woman. My brother who know lives in Kentucky swears by this place in fact every time he comes back to Michigan he makes it a point to come here. The real bean sprout egg rolls are the best he has had anywhere. He is also a pilot and travels the world so this is pretty high praise! read more

I've been on the search for good Chinese like I has in the city and hadn't found anything until I came to this place. The happiness I felt! I ordered Orange Chicken with pork fried rice, egg roll, and crab wantons. I asked to make the orange chicken spicy, and while I could see some spices in the sauce, it wasn't spicy. No big deal. I liked that my sauce came on the side: no soggy leftover chicken. The rice! Fried rice is my favorite but it has to be done right. This is done right and so is the egg roll. It's like the Chinese I got growing up. Classic. However, I wasn't fond of the crab wanton. I don't know exactly what it was, but the taste was slightly off. Not like bad crab or just off, just missing something to balance the flavors. I knocked down a star for the price and overall taste. My total was $18. I will be going back overall. read more

As far as Americanized Chinese goes; Canton China is a pretty solid choice in this area of Canton! For several years this little minty green place was our regular hangout. Prices are reasonable, and the amount of food you receive will easily create a second (or third) meal. I am addicted to their crumbly, delicious almond cookies! When fresh, these nuggets of joy are truly addictive and more often than not we would leave with a bag of 'em to go. Hubsters likes some ginger beef dish which is not listed on the menu. It contains crispy beef, scallions and ginger. Mmmh mmmh, good! Kung pao beef, lo mein noodles and general beef are good choices. This place introduced me to the sweet spiciness of the 'General' dish. Their crispy beef had me neglect the more conventional clucker, and the sauce had me coming back for more over and over again. Why is this all written in past tense, you ask? Sometimes when you frequent a place too often, you start to know how something is exactly 'supposed' to taste. Over time, we realized and quickly became annoyed with the inconsitency of their product. Depending on who cooks, dishes will taste very different from one cook/day, to the next. Service is friendly, food is quite alright - but it's those darn cookies that still make me swing by to pick some up every now and then. If you do not plan on eating here several times a week, or if you are okay with slightly inconsistent dishes.., give 'em a try. You'll seriously probably enjoy this place! read more

Reminded me of a place over in Livonia growing up which is now ruined by new owners...Dale Yee's...Generous portions of hot perfectly cooked (fried, I'm know) food. We got $30 worth of food and threw it out sadly. The hot and sour soup took sour to a new extreme. It didn't have the usual ingredients. We ended up not eating it. I got sesame chicken. The chicken was old and dry. The actual sauce didn't have a taste and made the chicken feel like it had slime covering it. The spring roll was soggy and didn't taste like a spring roll. The rice that came with the combo was crunchy. My husband got lo mein. It was the Asian noodles with an unidentifiable meat on the top and veggies that you usually don't find in lo mein. The sauce was not the usual brown sauce but a clear slime. My husband couldn't get past bite 2. Overall it was an awful experience and a waste of money. I would expect most places to be packed at 7pm on a Saturday night but this place was deserted. That should have probably been a clue that if they weren't busy there was probably a good reason. Edit: My husband asked me to add that it only took them about 7 minutes to get our food to us. He thinks they just warmed everything up instead of making it fresh. read more

Oh, how I love Canton China. Sure, the decor is dated...but who cares. Once you eat the food, you won't care. The best egg rolls - great wrapper with bean sprouts and all the good filling. AMAZING plum sauce. Egg drop is the way to go...and their won ton chips are delicious!! Their sweet & sour chicken is a staple, also their garlic chicken (i could seriously drink the sauce from this dish). If you like sweet and sour chicken, and almond chicken...try their Hawaiian chicken, it's the flat chicken breast from almond chicken with the sweet and sour sauce. Best of both worlds! As of right now, my favorite dish is their szechuan style veggie lo mien - spicy heat. MMMMM! Also, don't miss out on their almond cookies with fortune cookies at the end. We go here every year when family is in town as a large group...the staff remembers us. If you can manage to get the older lady (I can't remember her name right now) but I believe she's family of the chef...she makes it a great experience. ANYWAYS - if you're contemplating going...go. A great little restaurant. We were looking for a new Chinese restaurant because many in the area don't have gai kow, and this place was just what we looking for. The staff is very nice and helpful, ready to answer any question and have a friendly conversation. The combo meal comes with an egg roll and soup, then the portion size is huge, you could easily split it between two people. The food was really good and exactly what I was looking for. The beef fried rice was a bit to salty but other than that it was great. At the end you should have the delicious almond cookies. This is easily my new favorite Chinese restaurant. read more

I have been going here for the past 3-4 years as a lunch spot or for quick late night dinners and cannot complain about anything. The food is nothing to brag about but is definetly wholesome and filling. For around 10 dollars either for lunch or dinner you get a massive egg roll, small soup, and an INCREDIBLE portion size. Every time I leave I have a nice meal to warm up the next day. The staff is always friendly and personal and very timely with service all the time. Takeout turnaround time is very fast as well. After reading the previous reviews it is like we went to different restaurants. Decor - I rather like kitsch, but this was sad. Needs a new cost of paint. But if the food had been good, I would not have noticed. Service- while very pleasant, you need to ask about the type of rice. I ended up with fried and I like white. I would have preferred Hot and Sour/Spicey soup, but before I got settled I was given an oral choice of Egg Drop or Wonton. I would have paid the extra $1 for Hot&Sour. Egg drop Soup- it was very tasty. Egg Rolls - to much shell to filling ratio. The sweet sauce to go with it was good, Not the gelatinous, flavorless or overly sweet that is at many places. Entree- it was ok (beef and mushrooms). Lots of Fresh Button mushrooms, but no other type of mushroom- I am used to a combination of several types including some dried. I would also have like other veggies, but I could have asked more questions. The almond cookie- it was so good it earned them the second star. Price- this lost them a star. Out of all the chinese restaurants I've ever tried in my life, no restaurant can live up to Canton China. I absolutely adore this place and cannot live without it!! I have moved far away from Canton recently and even though I'm an hour away, I often make the hour plus drive back to Canton just to eat here. I've been coming here with my wife for almost 10 years and have never had a bad experience. The owner is very kind and remembers us when we visit. Every dish we've tried has always been fresh and very tasty!! I would reccomend this place to anyone who enjoys great food!!! read more

Stopped in during lunch last Friday and we were the only people there which concerned me. However, my husband and I both had good meals. My husband raved about his sesame chicken stating that the breading was thin and crispy unlike the thick and chewy stuff you get from many Chinese restaurants. He got the combo so his came with an egg roll and fried rice which he said were fine. My garlic chicken was good - nice chunks of chicken - but I wish I had ordered it hotter. I went for mild but definitely should've gone medium or higher. What I really liked was that all of the veggies were chopped and completely incorporated into the mix which meant I got a bit of most things in very bite. I stuck with the standard white rice and had egg drop soup. Would definitely come back and try some other dishes. read more

We visited Canton China Restaurant today because we heard they had 'real' eggrolls and yes they did! The yummy kind with bean sprouts like back in the day. And all the food was delicious, extra kudos for the soup (quality way above typical chinese restaurant), the hottest tea, and fantastic homemade almond cookies. But even with all the awesome food one of the best parts of this restaurant was Connie from Hong Kong, our new favorite waitress. She is friendly, she knew what we needed before we even asked, and her smiling personality made for such an enjoyable meal. Looking for a new local Chinese restaurant, read the reviews thought I'd try it. Egg rolls greasy, overcooked. Lo Mein, rice noodles, not the thick lo mein ones. Some weird sauce, never had sauce on lo mein before, so soggy that the bottom fell out of the styrofoam container. The Beef?? in it, mushy no texture. Next up,Seafood Kow, nice fresh shrimp & scallops, however, not much flavor. Upon eating the bok choy, I had to chew it and spit out the rest as it would not chew up. On the plus side, big portions. I have only ordered takeout. Chicken chop suey and Gai Kow have been very good. Wan ton soup is also good. Have never had a problem.

One dish came out over cooked, the other under cooked (chicken -- yuck!). Overall, taste was bland -- as was the atmosphere.

I LOVE this restaurant. When we are in town, we always have a seat. My partner and I have never felt ostracized as a same sex couple by any of the staff or patrons (not that the restaurant has anything to do with that...just an aside). The food is delicious and we make sure and always have somewhere to take our leftovers...most of the time its not hard :D My favorite so far is the Lemon chicken dinner...and the WONTON soup is incredible. read more

My husband and I go here often. We usually order pepper steak and almond boneless chicken. Both come with soup wonton with fried noodles, which is great. The egg rolls are delicious. The entree is enough for two or more meals. The order also comes with fortune and almond cookies, great! Very reasonably priced. Service is very friendly. read more
