Canton is one of our favorites in Santa Cruz! They have the best salt and pepper fish. It's a must try! With so many vegetarian and pescatarian options, it's a great option when we are craving noodles or rice dishes. The Chow Mein is amazing and has so many options. The staff is friendly and accommodating. We always feel welcomed. They really know how to hire just the right people. The staff actually wants you to enjoy the entire restaurant experience. Canton Westside takes over what used to be Golden City on Mission and they delivered a fantastic Lunar New Year meal for us. The owners from Canton in Scotts Valley now own this spot and the quality is carried over. They offer a $15 dinner special where you can select an entree and it is accompanied by rice, an egg roll, and soup. I ordered their Szechuan Tofu special and was pleasantly surprised at how great it ended up being. Large chunks of deep fried puffy tofu tossed in spices that made up half of my plate! I was loving this dish and was surprised at how crispy the outside was while it retained such softness inside. This item was also clearly marked vegan which is great for plant based eaters like myself. Make sure you ask for soup with no egg if you're avoiding that part. We stopped here after a Long Beach day in the mood for some Chinese. Canton did not disappoint! The service was excellent the lady working was very friendly and attentive. The food was great also, we had the chicken and broccoli as well as the walnut prawns lunch specials which included white rice (pork fried rice 2$ extra) and a hot and sour soup. All of the food was very fresh especially the broccoli and tasted great. My only knock was it was a tad on the salty side(chicken and broccoli). We'll definitely be coming back. read more

Was Golden City, bought out, and now Canton Westside is different...they painted flowers on the windows, now you can't see out...they took out the carpet, so now it's noisy...the prices went up, but it's the same cook...food is good, but the atmosphere suffers. read more

Went in on a Sunday afternoon, empty but chill and had a nice Chinese restaurant ambiance. Server was pretty friendly too. Main things is that the portion size is pretty good on the entree, would've liked a better bean to chicken ratio but I do love me some green beans. I thought $4 for rice was a lot but it was a family portion...the rice wasn't amazing, it was a little dry for jasmine rice but not bad overall. The chicken was standard Chinese restaurant texture and the beans were charred nicely. The sauce wasn't too heavy and had a light coating, plus had little black beans that just added pops of flavor rolling around in the plate. Fortune cookie was also great. Schezuan beef :7/10 crunchy, perfect amount of sauce flavor wasn't the best. But it wasn't bad. Kung Pao 2/10 was lack any flavor at all. Please chefs throw some more sauce on it do not be greedy. Fried rice 1/10 it tasted like white rice. No flavor at all. Hire new cooks or change who is making it. Because the fried rice was just pathetic. read more

The quality of food is exceptional! The restaurant doesn't look like much from outside and it right next to a laundromat. But on the inside it super neat and cozy. It is spacious and aesthetically pleasing. They start you with a tea service, and have dinner/lunch specials. The options are economical and the portions huge. I definitely had to take some Togo. The staff is polite and attentive. The tofu is breaded and fried which makes the stir fry's more fun. Their combos are an entree of choice plus rice and a spring roll. 5/10 Dittos, was okay Came here with a group of people and the service was pretty good. I ordered the wonton noodle soup and unfortunately there was way more vegetables than there was both noodle and wontons combined. It was also rather bland, even with the chili oil. The portions of everyone's meal though was large and is meant to be shared family style. Everybody else seemed to enjoy their food but this was a miss for me unfortunately. I heard that Golden City on Mission St had new owners and I really wanted to find a good Chinese Restaurant in Santa Cruz. So I tried one item take out for lunch to see how it was and I was very happy with it. So, another try with a few items for dinner and it was great. So nice to have a good Chinese Restaurant to have as our family's go to. Its been a long time coming and it is so great to have this as our now go-to. Try it! May be we are too boujie for small town Chinese spots since living in the Bay Area... Guess we are spoiled by eating authentic in Chinatown! We were a party of eight. Portions were large. My sons loved the fried shrimp, fried wonton strips, and the french fries. The BBQ pork was cold and salty. The Cheese Rangoons tasted like bland Philadelphia Cream Cheese. The pork potstickers were doughy and a tiny amount of bland filling. My toddler is OBSESSED with potstickers. And he didn't touch his after one chewy nibble. For our food, we ordered: Chow Fun, Mongolian Beef, Orange Chicken, Shrimp Chowmein, Sizzling Rice Soup, Wonton Soup, and Steamed Rice. The only thing I enjoyed was the steam rice. Everything else was super greasy and bland! My kids love orange chicken. And what was served to us was a disgrace! My kids were so confused! They were strips of breaded chicken cutlets drowned in some orange sauce. Drinks: Overpriced $0.99 Arizona Can Green Teas, Disgusting Can of Thai Iced Tea. And Black Hot Tea instead of a nice jasmine or oolong. My kids literally ran to my mom's house and crapped themselves! That's how upset their stomachs were after eating there. The New Canton Restaurant on Mission St was called Golden City, and it is SO Good! The WS has been in need of an awesome spot since Omei closed. I've been there 5 times under the new ownership and they do not disappoint. Slight crunch to the veggies, perfectly seasoned, a little saucy.... Yup! Nailed it. I'm excited to try then next dish. Service is nice, portions are big, but the food is okay. Portions were definitely huge for the price. We had enough food for two meals. We ordered the spring rolls, Hunan tofu, Szechuan Beef and a side of rice. It's definitely Americanized Chinese food. That said, it still tasted good. The spring rolls were amazing. Flaky, hot, and the veggie filling was yummy. I had to ask for chopsticks as only forks were provided. The Szechuan beef had way too much sweet sauce. The beef was tender enough and the dish was filled with large pieces of green pepper, onions, and water chesnuts. The Hunan Tofu was fried then sauteed in garlicky sauce with snap peas. I decided to order take out from the new Canton Westside (formerly Golden City) after I noticed the change of ownership sign on the outside. Normally I order from a closer Chinese restaurant, but I wanted to try something new. Our family was very pleasantly surprised. The food was so good that we could not stop eating it. There were some leftovers, and the next day my daughter and husband both mentioned that they could not wait to have them for their lunch. Since then, my husband and I have gone back twice. Lunch specials are cheap and I do like their hot and sour soup better than the others I've tried in Santa Cruz. I've been here just once and that is because Tess had a hankering for Chinese food.
