If you're planning a camping trip to Yellowstone I'd highly recommend Canyon Campgrounds as your homebase. The tent sites are excellent. Lodgepole pine trees permeate the area and offer nice coverage. The sites are good sized, the bathrooms have hot hand dryers for cold days and have large dishwashing stations attached. The "village" is very cute - plenty of shops, a sporting goods store, good restaurant options, a post office, and much more. The prices were great - $5.50 local IPA pints on tap, $2 for a nice bowl of real mashed potatoes and gravy, etc. A short walk to Yellowstone falls, as well as a short drive in any direction to other major attractions. When we were here it snowed but the pines were easy to tie tarps off of. This site drained really well, and so although we had lots of precipitation we stayed very dry. There is firewood by at the camp entrance and they give you hot showers for every day that you're there. Because of the high altitude wood fires don't start that well, so bring some charcoal lighter fluid or something. Highly recommended - we will be back! read more

The campground itself was great. Bear boxes, easy access to many spigots for water, bathrooms nearby, picnic tables and fire pits at each site, and showers. My only complaint was that our specific site (A7) wasn't very level and it was difficult to find a flat enough spot to set up our tent. We ended up sleeping on quite the angle, which after 3 nights is obviously not ideal. I also wished the showers were open 24/7. If people are out watching wildlife until later into the evening or get up earlier to get a good start on their day they end up missing the hours for showers. read more

Booked two sites in July of 2018 for a stay in August 2019 and were assigned sites 101 and 99. We tent camped and were able to fit both of our parties' tents (13×9, 10x10) in one campground along with a minivan and SUV. We were lucky, other sites didnt look as accomadating. After speaking with the campground manager, we were refunded for one campground, of course they kept a deposit. Coming from California camping, I was prepared to "rough" it out in Yellowstone and boy was I wrong! The amenities were so useful. There was an indoor dishwashing station (albeit cold water), spigots, CLEAN bathrooms, and the showers were short drive away (2 free per night, the gentlemen let our kids shower for free). The showers were clean and even at 7pm the line took no longer than 10 mins. Ice and wood was available for purchase as well as washers/dryers. Nobody is at the campground during the day and in the evening folks are cooking dinner and sleeping right away in order to truly explore the park the next morning. There were bear boxes at each site, and we were allowed to store items in our cars (big gasps here, in Yosemite we usually arent allowed so that was neat). Weather. We got thunderstorms 2/4 nights we were there. The weather changes quick! We were only expecting light showers the first night and were caught off guard the following night. With 2 tarps, and a rain fly, we still got small leak in our coleman rents (from top and bottom). Made it for a rough night the first time, especially with kids, and then we just accepted it. Bring tarps and rope! Nights didnt feel as cold, a north face tent rated for 40 and a fleece blanket sufficed. Lots of places for kids to play safely. Didnt see wildlife, but heard some central location. 1hr to Mammoth springs, 10 min to Grand Canyon, 20 mins to Norris Canyon, 1 hr to Lamar Valley, 15 mins to Hayden Valley. 1.5hrs to Old Faithful. read more

i loved this campground!! it was so convenient right in the middle of the park. you could get all around Yellowstone from the campground easily since the park is so huge! the bathrooms were clean, showers were super nice, and the wooded campsites were so cool! each site came with its own bear box and a picnic table. the campground main office had super nice and helpful staff to recommend hikes, bear safety, etc. the canyon visitor center, general store, outfitters store, and food court were right across the street so you could walk there. also, the shower house had a laundromat as well if you are staying a while! read more

Had a unique experience as a first-timers for camping! We were in B-loop. Checked-in close to 10 pm, the process was quick, the staff is super friendly. Super Clean & Spacious campground for 9 people! Has a fire pit, table and ample parking space for 2 full-size SUVs as well. Super chilly at night, staying in to the woods and you can hear wolves howling, sending in more chills on your way. The mornings were amazing too. Well maintained and very clean showers, laundry and toilet. Quick check out as well. We were lucky to see a couple of Moose or Elks very close to the campground. The Grand Canyons of Yellowstone & the Yellowstone river are pretty closeby, which is a must visit, along with a small ~2 miles hike to the waterfalls. All I have to say its a perfect gateway to wilderness! Recommended! read more

My group stayed in a large tent site in loop C at this campground for 3 nights in August 2016. Our site was at the end of the loop and quite far from other tent sites, which was great for us since we didn't need to worry about being too loud for other campers. We were a couple min walk to the nearest bathroom, but there was a water spigot even closer. It was nice being in a loop near the main entrance because it was an easy walk down to the showers and laundry. We used both during our stay. Showers were clean and you could rent towels and other necessities from the attendant. Busiest hours were around 5/6pm but earlier or later I never had a wait. Laundry was also well maintained and you could purchase soap from dispenser (no need to bring your own). The location of this campground is perfect! Its right near canyon village with its general store, lodge, visitor center, souvenir shops, etc. Its also centrally located and it wasn't a far drive down to the lake or to the old faithful area. We even followed a wildlife tour bus up to the Lamar valley and got to see tons of buffalo! (no bears unfortunately). Overall a great campground with decent amenities that's centrally located. We stayed in the D loop tent only campground for 3 nights. Location was central in the park and great access for early morning or at-dusk drives to Hayden Valley and Lamar Valley where all the wildlife came to play! We had 3 huge elks and a mama deer with 2 baby fawns walk/prance through our campsite. Our campsite was nestled in the lodge pole pine trees so good for shade and hanging our hammock. Fire pits with grates were good for our campfires. Bathrooms were cleaned daily with flush toilets and cold water faucets. There was also an indoor dishwashing station that was handy and kept food scents contained. 2 showers came with each night of reservation. Clean refreshing hot showers -ahhh! Good mix of camping with hotel amenities - I likey! read more

After standing in line for an hour to get our campsite, we were told there are no showers. The campground didn't have bear boxes (required for campers) anywhere near our site. We paid for, and requested, a back-in RV site and instead got the side of the road. We had booked 3 nights, and left after the first night because of the negligent Xanterra staff. read more

We loved our stay at Canyon. We had originally booked two sites, but realized we could easily fit our three tents onto one. The staff was very helpful and let us choose which site we wanted to keep. We spent three nights at Canyon - each site has a picnic table and a fire circle/grate. There are numerous lodgepole pines in the area, so although you are close to your neighbors, you do have some sense of privacy as well. The facilities at Canyon were some of the best on our trip. The bathrooms were newly constructed with a great dishwashing room on the back (much larger than then the other two sites we stayed at in Yellowstone). The laundry facility was large and easy to access. The showers were $3.25 for an unlimited shower - we actually came back on the last day to shower here again before going on. The site is right next to the Yellowstone Canyon (obviously) and it is very easy to get to different points of the park from here. The only downside was the parking was on the road for all the tent sites - a very minor detail! read more

Based upon a review herein, I wanted to get into Loop "L". It was full. So, I got a campsite in Loop "H" near the restrooms, but not TOO close. The restrooms have flush toilets, sinks and power (but, no, you are not supposed to recharge your cell phone there ... so ... bring something you can use to charge in your vehicle). There is also a separate dish washing "station" --- a deep-sink and cold water --- at the restroom location, very handy and wisely constructed to handle one-dishwashing-person at a time (this avoids conflict, I am sure). This is much easier than trying to wash your dishes at the campsite, which can and does leave behind tasty morsels for critters, large and small. There is also fresh and delicious drinking water just outside the restroom, both a drinking fountain and faucets. One could probably bottle-it-up and sell the water, it is so good. There also are bear-proof dumpsters and food storage cabinets. The bear-proof food storage cabinets are to be shared between two, maybe three campsites. If, say, three campsites were to use one of these, there would not be much space to share. In my example, it was not an issue, because the surrounding campers had "hard-sided" RVs and camper-trucks. So, they did not use the food storage, which allowed me to spread-out therein. Oh, there are nice fire pits and picnic tables at each campsite. At the registration area where you check-in, there are showers (you get a coupon for showers, included in the camping fees) and huge laundry facilities. There were twelve showers on the men's side, each with a cramped changing area and, of course, the shower itself. It was a little tight, but who cares? It is nice to get the camping & travel grit off in a nice, hot shower, which was managed by a friendly staff. At the nearby Canyon Village there are restaurants, a store (with a fairly good selection of groceries, if you forgot something), souvenirs, an outdoor / camping gear store (bring money) and more. Oh, a gas station nearby too, which is operated by Yellowstone Park Service Stations, Inc. (YPSS). Canyon is a very popular campground. It was filled every night, even after the Labor Day weekend, when you'd think occupancy would diminish a bit. So, reservations are a must. The reservations are handled by Xanterra ( http://www.xanterra.com/ ), a COMPLETELY efficient, friendly, and professional company; very impressive. There simply must be exceptions from time-to-time but, in this example, neighboring campers were respectful, behaved themselves, and everyone went to bed early. So, all that went smoothly. The year I camped there, 2016, they closed on September 11th. If you cannot enjoy your camping experience at Canyon, stay home and watch reruns of Gilligan's Island. ;-) read more

Cons: I didn't love our spot in loop L. I think that being right behind the bathrooms (everyone walked through our campsite to get to them) and not being off the road completely (our site was a half circle off the road) cost a star on my review. None of the sites looked level so make sure you have some blocks, if you're in an RV. If you are in a far loop - like loop L - you are VERY far, and up a big hill, from the showers. Pros: The bathrooms were super clean and they had heat!! Such a luxury. Remember to take your towel with you to the bathrooms because they only have the air dryers. They also have a dedicated dish washing area off the bathrooms which is nice. The front desk was very considerate, but a tad slow to check in. I think that was because of the customers rather than the employees. Final Word: If going to Yellowstone Park again, I would definitely stay in a different campground because now I know which ones are the best! This campground is very central to the park but not the most aesthetic to me. Some of the other campgrounds have better views. read more

Campsites have cramped spacing and little privacy between sites with the lodgepole pines not blocking views of neighboring campers. Some sites have no way to pull into the camp and you must park on the shoulder of the road. I saw somebody forced to take a shower behind a curtain attached to a van where they were parked on the road shoulder where anyone could see what they were doing. The general store is within walking distance and the laundry was open during COVID but the showers were closed. Staff was very helpful and friendly except for one individual at the checkin who acted surly for no reason except she was "tired". Received an email right before the trip saying that the food service was completely closed off to campers due to COVID-related staffing shortages. Saw an elk casually walk through my camp at about a 30 ft. distance. read more

This campground had the amenities of a hotel (minus an indoor pool). We were able to make reservations here- at most of the Yellowstone campgrounds, you are not able to. We reserved a spot for an RV or 2- small tents- so I was expecting it to be a plot that was carefully measured, because I had to submit the size of my tents and vehicle. I was surprised to find that we had a decent sized area with a picnic table and fire ring. The staff on site was so friendly. We had two showers per site, per night free- but had to pay for anything additional. The showers were big and plentiful- they had a laundry facility with plenty of washers and driers. The only bad thing is that we were right by the bathrooms so we heard people walking all night. If I camped in Yellowstone again, I would definitely return here. read more

I'm not typically a fan of "car camping." (Prefer hiking in and finding a spot, backcountry-style.) And it had been several years since I did. But we thought this would be a good way to see as much of Yellowstone as possible in just a couple days. Not only were we not disappointed, but we had an incredible time. In terms of location in the park itself, I can't imagine a better place to be. This campground is centrally located and a very easy drive to just about everything! In terms of the campground specifically, the sites are spacious, the people who greeted us when we checked in were extremely friendly and helpful, the bathrooms and showers were clean, and it seems like all of the campers were incredibly conscientious. Quiet time starts at 10, but most campers were already in their tents by 9! If you're looking for a fantastic place to stay in Yellowstone and be close to nature and amazing things to do and see, I can't imagine a better place to be. Cheers and happy camping! read more

The campground was nice, but a little crowded. The worst part was the construction going on at the Canyon Village. I understand construction needs to happen to keep everything nice, but paving until 9:30pm is terrible! The last thing I wanted to hear while sitting by a campfire in yellowstone before bed was the beeping of a roller compacting asphalt! The campground is definitely a 4! Beautiful, secluded, clean! However, the facilities are not the cleanest(although this is a campground so that's not a huge Factor), and the stores and food is a complete rip-off and the food is terrible! If you camp here, please make sure you purchase food somewhere cheaper prior to entering the campground, cook your own food, and keep your food locked up in a bear box. read more

Stayed here two nights. It was a good central location in Yellowstone and located near the "Grand Canyon" of Yellowstone. However, the food at the restaurant was over-priced and low quality. The place was crowded with tourists, though not filled to capacity. Campsites were very small. The employees were all very pleasant and helpful. There was access to showers, laundry and a cafe. This is a good place to stay if you have kids or need a good hopping off point while exploring the park. read more

Great campground. We were in spot C67. Perfect spot close to bathrooms but not right next door. Lots of shade and trees so even though there were many campers around felt you had some privacy. It was quiet and peaceful. Clean bathrooms and free clean showers. Easy walking to the Canyon Lodge and stores. It was a perfect central location to all parts of Yellowstone. We were there for two nights and felt we got to expire everything from Old Faithful to Roosevelt Lodge. read more

This is probably one of the best experience I've ever had camping for long period of time. The facilities are clean neat and well taken care of. The staff is very friendly well-organized. Our family stay there for extended period of time, and enjoyed every minute of it. ****One large problem. The staff member Linda from New Hampshire is a rude, unprofessional , drops the f word constantly while we were checking in. The third day when we were there, my son asked Linda what was the weather going to be like today. Quote Linda told him are you blind can't you read and pointed to the weather sign in the shower room. We pulled in really late to the campground since we were driving from South Dakota, and the Rangers were very pleasant with the check in process! Most of the campsites had privacy due to the abundance of trees and the bathrooms were clean! We only got two shower passes for 4 people when purchasing the site, it would have been nice if they let everyone in a group shower for free but I understand they need to make money. Overall a good campsite and a close drive to the awesome views of the upper and lower falls. read more
