This place is a diamond in the rough, open seasonally (for obvious reasons) this has to be the best ice cream shop in the state! They make all their ice cream in house, they even try new flavors that they create. They have limited indoor seating but plenty of outdoor seating in the middle of a garden. This is a real find! Was in the area for dinner and yelped nearby for ice cream. You had me at "double chocolate peanut butter crisp!" We drove up to this place and was immediately in awe of the building and the nearby park surroundings. What a cool place. We went inside and the love affair continued. There's some seating inside and upstairs and it looks like an old house. Really really cool location. The kids serving behind the counter were friendly. We each got a double scoop in a cup. We had coconut chip, double choc peanut butter chip, java chip and cookies n cream. deelish! pricey though. All tolled, came to $10. read more

I got the double chocolate and coffee flavored ice cream. For the price you can buy a gallon somewhere, and the cones are tiny. I've had better ice cream at several places one being Village Creamery in Skokie. Personally I would say this place isn't worth the travel too. read more

I've been here twice over the past three years and both times were wonderful. I brought a group of summer camp kids here and got the "tour" which includes the history of the building and a visit upstairs to see the ice cream maker and flash freezer... cool stuff. The ice cream is wonderful. A few interesting flavors, a few old favorites AND they carry Sprecher Root Beer and Cream Soda. I'll have to ask for the sugar-free stuff next time. The garden, outside, is a very nice addition to the quaint little house and a wonderful place to sit down and enjoy your yumminess. I signed up for their eMail list a couple years ago, and while I haven't made it back for any of their events, they all sound like a lot of fun... there seems to be a good amount of live music going on there. read more

This is my favorite local ice cream shop in the northwest suburbs. It is family owner and operated, in a historical building in downtown Mount Prospect. There is a delicious and eclectic menu of regular and rotating flavors. Our family favorite is raspberry chocolate chip. One of the more unique handmade gourmet ice cream spots in the Chicago area. Ultra decadent ice cream, interesting creative flavors (carrot cake! Yum!!), small batch, very good service. I've been coming here off and on for years and it has always been consistently very, very good. It's such a pleasure to find craft ice cream tucked away in such an unexpected spot. As much as Capannari's has gotten regional and national recognition in media like pbs, Saveur, Bon Appetit, etc. for how well made it is, it remains very much a local gem that the neighborhood can enjoy without a haute elite food snob attitude. Best ice cream in town! Really liked the fact that they have sitting outside, so you can enjoy your delicious ice cream!!!

Review in progress... Ice cream was good - I got Rocky Road. Ice cream was nice and chocolatey, maybe even a bit bitter, but still very nice. The nuts and marshmallows could of been a bit more in quantity, or maybe I got the two scoops in an uneven part of the container (?). Still, was well made and look forward in trying other flavors. Keep in mind this place is a bit small, so if you want to eat your ice cream or drink your drink, you will need to do it outside. Plenty of benches, and a gazebo is in towards the back with plenty of room. A bunch of us met there and it wasn't too crowded but it was close to closing. I believe around and after dinner is when it gets really crowded. Parking tends to be iffy, depending when you go to Cap's, so if there's no parking, go to the block southeast from there and plenty of street parking near the condo. Service was meh - it took longer paying for my ice cream than waiting to get served when the first girl passed over me. The "kids" there was busy talking teen beat stuff while I was waiting. Sorry, no service, no tip. And usually I'm an overtipper who's extremely lenient. Maybe next time when you kids have your act together. Regardless of the lack of decent service, I'll come back to try more flavors and see if the service improves. Maybe I'll come by in the peak time, see how they do under pressure. Points taken off for meh service. Points preserved by good ice cream. Sorry not sorry for not following the other Yelpers in a 4+ rating trend. However...to be continued. read more

The ice cream flight is the best way to try more flavors! You get 4 small scoops with the flight. Like most ice cream shops, you can ask to sample taste before you commit. My favorites so far are the "malted / butter" flavors. They have a natural richness to it that I love. The nuts in the ice cream taste like they were freshly roasted that day making butter pecan a must try! Salted caramel is also another favorite of mine. Tips: - Street parking. You can park at the nearby business parking lots ONLY AFTER THEIR BUSINESS HOURS. - It's a long line for ice cream but usually moves pretty fast. - Eat your ice cream inside or in the quaint park outside the shop. - No sugar free options. read more

This hidden gem in Mount Prospect is amazing and a family tradition. This is hand crafted ice cream where the basics (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry) are incredible. Then they throw in great seasonal flavors that are some of the best I've tasted. Closed during the winter, we all look forward to Spring and the day they open their doors for the season. If Capannari is in your neck of the woods, by all means, frequent them and help keep them in business, as this is the best ice cream you can get and to be excitedly so is merited. However, that love moves slightly down the ladder if all of the northern suburbs and Chicago is taken into account. For all the frozen goodness, some other brands have them beat in decadence and overall flavor. Granted, I've only ried 3 of their flavors, the classic ones: Madagascar vanilla, rich chocolate, strawberries & cream. All 3 are yummy with a good balance of creaminess and sweetness. The issue I have is a zest for stronger flavors, more decadence and depth to the ice cream. The same for the hot fudge. It simply needs a bit more oomph and a bit higher temperature and decadence. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with a cone or cup or sundae at Capannari. read more

Was very disappointed with my experience here! Drove about 30 minutes with the family to come for Ice Cream! We heard great things about this place! They served us ice cream that was melted! Come on!! Ice cream should not be melty! The taste was average! I've had better ice cream! I personally think Coldstone is still my favorite!
