Used to live very close to this shop and didn't find this gem til later. I have been to different Michoacanas in the suburbs and this one is by far the best. Other locations Ice cream and service were not even close. My favorite thing here are the paletas (Mexican ice cream bar) specifically the one with mixed fruit. It has such a nice creamy, sweet milk base flavor and then you get the burst of fruit. I've tried the Ferrero rocher, Oreo, and other fruit flavors which were all yummy and true to their flavor names but the mixed fruit one is my go to. The staff here have always been great. I am not familiar with Latin American flavors/fruits and on multiple occasions, staff was very patient answering questions about different fruits or flavors of ice cream and even giving me a taste. On one occasion one of my kids had mentioned something about a green slushy and when we went to pay she gave him a small cup to try. They also are quite generous with the amount of ice cream they serve. They also have a large selection of dairy free paletas. I did not try one but a bunch in our group who are dairy free, raved about how smooth they were (as no dairy) and how strong the fruit flavor was. The mango was a very big hit. There are so many Michoacanas in the suburbs but this one just hits different. Hidden away in a small strip mall that is easy to miss, we have have driven a little further just to get Mexican ice cream from here opposed to other shops. The ice bars are loaded with flavor and fresh fruit and have yet to disappoint. The staff have always offered samples for our kids so we never end up with a cupful of unwanted melted ice cream. read more

I really like this la Michoacána They have banana leaf tamales which are either green or red. We tried both and they're a full meal. You only need one! Had the strawberry coconut ice cream. First time coming to this location. They had 3 ladies working here that were nice. But I gotta say everyone who comes here order a lot. It took me 20min to get my order in. Guess there are lots of things to choose from and everyone trying to eat everything. I got 2 popsicles (Oreo and raspberry), and my boyfriend got a mocha shake and a pina colada yogurt/ smoothie. I've never tried anything else other than the popsicles. But I gotta say, if you are feeling a shake or yogurt and happen to see a La Michoacana, stop by and grab one from here. Therefore "La Michoacana" has become a very popular name for ice cream places in Mexico, and this specific one seems to belong to a particularly popular chain of them (based on a shared logo). Just some trivia for you all since I personally was curious about the meaning of the name when I first saw it. That being said, this La Michoacana in Mount Prospect offers very delicious, very FRESH tasting ice cream. As someone else mentioned, at present there are no menus and none of the ice cream bins are labelled. However, the cashier very courteously told us what each and every flavor on offer was so we could make an informed decision. I've only had the ice cream, but it looks like they also offer smoothies/milk shakes, ice cream popsicles ("paletas"), nachos, and some other snackies. A popular item we saw being ordered was the "mangonada." It is basically mango sorbet with chili sauce on top. I tried a bite of it and, while quite an interesting flavor, I prefer the Habanero Mango gelato at The Glen in Glenview. The prices here are very reasonable and they don't skimp on the portions by any stretch of the imagination. If you get a waffle cone you can pick two flavors (but they really give you more like three scoops rather than just two). Flavors of ice cream I can recommend include mango, strawberry, Ferrero Rocher chocolate (extremely rich!), oreo (aka cookies and cream), pistachio, and strawberry cheesecake (very thick - like they just blended up a real cheesecake and put it in a cone!). Now, full disclosure time: we just discovered this place on Sunday, so how have we tried all these flavors? Well, we've been back THREE TIMES in one week, with the now spent excuse of "Well, so-and-so hasn't tried La Michoacana yet!" We have been here on a Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evening, and it has been quite crowded each and every time. I hope this place endures with as much success through the Chicago winter since I know the craving for ice cream tends to wane as the temperature drops. Note: there are actually two different La Michoacana's in Chicago and greater Chicago area. There is a La Michoacana with a logo that has a girl and says "Es Natural" on it (this location), and a La Michoacana with that doesn't have this logo (like Prospect Heights location). The ones with the "Es Natural" logos are significantly better and give bigger portion sizes compared to the others. This franchise is underrated. I'm a huge fan of ice cream shops in and around Chicago but yesterday was the first time I heard about this place. At first, I thought this was the only location, but I was wrong. They are ALL over Chicago and the greater area, and they might actually have more locations then Oberweis. $3.80 for a big cone with 3-4 scoops. The ice cream is delicious. I got the oreo flavor and they have HUGE chunks of oreos in there. They have oreo bar ice creams too and all sorts of fruit bars. My friend got the ferreo rocher (however you spell it) and he loved it. At Baskin Robbins, you get two small scoops for about $4. So I will probably never go to BR again. The crazy part is, they seem to be famous for the other things they offer. I don't know the names of them as they label everything in spanish but they look good! The line was very long when we came and there is barely any dining space. So we ate in our car. The line does move a little slower then other ice cream shops I've been too, but then again, some people had pretty big orders. I'm a huge fan, will probably start exploring other locations. They just opened this location about a week ago and I am super excited. They have a location in Palatine but now I have one down the street from me! This is a Mexican ice cream shop that offers tons of different options. It ranges from ice cream to sorbet to different Mexican concoctions of yummy goodness. I love the mango sorbet, it tastes so fresh. They also have tons of fruit bars. I'm pretty sure they make them fresh inside because when I ordered my bars they told me to get them in the freezer ASAP because they were just made! Sweet!! I would say one downfall is they don't have a menu of any sort or a website...so that kind of makes it hard to try and decide what to get. Most unique popsicles I've ever had. Paletas (mexican popsicles) of all different flavors. It seems like theres a different amount of ice cream/popsicles at the different stores. One location had more ice cream flavors and just a few popsicles, and another location had more popsicles and less ice cream flavors. The ice cream was great the first time I went, but after discovering the popsicles, I probably won't go back to the ice cream. My favorite is this white popsicle with an assortment of fruits in it (kiwi, strawberry, and some other fruits). Loved the guava too, but it seems to have seeds or something in it which are a bit harder to chew. Lots of fruit chunks in their popsicles, so you know theres real fruit in it. Omgsh. Authentic Mexican homemade ice cream! They have cream based and juice based flavors- all delicious. You can really taste the flavors rather than eating straight up sugar like most ice cream chains. My wife and I stopped in after dinner over the weekend not really sure what to expect other than a desire not to head to DQ, Oberweis or Baskin Robbins. We were pleasantly surprised to say the least. Slipped between a slew of Mexican eateries in an oddly laid out strip mall sits a place where the best desserts you can imagine are able to be had without breaking the bank. As you walk in, the first thing you'll notice is the line. You'll wait, but it's worth it and buys time for your eyes to get their fill in on the plethora of sweets. Everything looked sinfully wonderful. My wife ordered a tall fruit water -- the only name for it despite inquiring if there was a Spanish equivalent -- and a pistachio flavored popsicle. With dual freezer cases filled to the top with them, I have no idea how she decided. I ordered a medium, though it proved to be considerably larger, Ferrero Rochér ice cream and while it tasted more like rocky road than a small, spherical candies, it was nonetheless a solid offering. Overall, both sets of desserts proved excellent. Downright great. My only quip quite possibly was the line combined with the relative length of time we waited. It's still winter on a Sunday night, the Oscar's are on, the high outside is maybe 10F, and out here in the 'burbs there's a perpetual line for ice cream. La Michoacana doesn't have visible menus up inside or any signage at all indicating flavors of the ice creams in the cases or the paletas (sorbets and ice creams on a stick) in the freezers, but don't let that stop you! We bought 12 paletas to stick in our freezer, for later. We've been huge fans of Mexican ice creams since the early 90's when my kids and I would chase down the "Mango pop men" selling paletas from their white push carts, in the Latino neighborhoods we frequented in Chicago. For some reason the city forbade them from selling east of Western Ave., so they were sometimes hard to find. I'd often come to a screeching halt, when the kids would shout, "Mango Pop Man", driving down Western or Damen, in Wicker Park, Buck Town or Ukrainian Village (back before they got overpriced and gentrified, and all the artists left). Anyway, I was pretty thrilled to hear about the opening of several Mexican ice cream shops from a fellow Yelper out of Memphis, Veronica X (Thanks V!). Finally the creamy deliciousness of Mexican ice cream, without having to chase down street vendors! What I'm even more thrilled about is that, apparently we've just been exposed to the tip of the Mexican ice cream iceberg. And that the sheer variety flavors and dessert experiences appears infinite.
