I've never really been into comics before, but my boyfriend is a fan of TWD and has been for years. It's close by so we check it out. It's amazing. The guy at the register is really cool and engaging - I imagine he's the owner. Anyway, I'm looking around and I see something called Sex Criminals. Good, fair prices. Since I'm new to the volume - well, any comic book reading for that matter - I ask about the first issue and he recommends I get the volume instead of the individual issue itself. Cool! Thanks! Prices are fair and I was told that orders come in about once a month, although that may have been specific to the comic I'm reading. Oh, and Sex Criminals = so far so good. I like reading from the feminine perspective. Will definitely be back. read more

Pros: this comic book opened about 3 months ago and it is such a blessing to the community (for comic book enthusiasts especially!). The front desk guy is super chill and nice! For a comic book store, it has a great blend of organization and "treasures to be found." Seriously, this place is so organized and the comics are so well packaged it's incredible! Of course, I love these $1 boxes and the mini-series boxes for very reasonable if not great deal prices! Cons: Compared to other comic book stores in the bay area, it is on the smaller side and since the area around 6th street is under construction, it can be quite a nuisance to get there (hopefully that will be resolved someday soon!). Overall: Love this hip comic shop and hope to be back soon! :D read more

Back wall is still being set up but it sounds like ill be checking that out soon for some back issues. Other collectable also for sale, for me it was the vinyls that my eyes POP. 9/9 Update: The owner wrote me to say "My staff and I remember our interaction quite a bit differently." This is quite upsetting to me, as what I wrote is actually verbatim to what actually occurred. My young daughter was with me at the time and it was very upsetting to me that this all happened in front of her, as I took great care in explaining to her before arriving that it should be a simple transaction. I told her, sometimes when you buy a comic and find out you already have it, you can bring it back and switch it out. Then when the actual encounter didn't go that way, it left me trying to explain it to my daughter. She saw the encounter happen exactly as I described as well. The owner also wrote, " I would welcome the opportunity to discuss with you in person how we could have done better." But at no point has he responded to my further emails, or offered any way to resolve the current situation. To restate the issue: In any other store I've ever visited in my 40+ years of collecting, if you buy a comic and you discover you already have it, the stores have let me switch it out for something of the same value. Not here. I purchased this comic for $8 from Cape and Cowl just last month. When I tried to bring it back, I was told it would only be worth $3-5 in best condition and even then he wouldn't give me not even one dollar of store credit for it, telling me it was a worthless comic. It makes me very upset as I try and support small business owners, but in this case the owner is making it difficult for me to continue to shop there. read more

I really love this comic store. Since the comic store closer to me in Berkeley closed, I had to go to the nearest one. Cape and Cowl made it easy. They are so nice and make it so easy and safe to pick up comics during the pandemic and I really appreciate it. I will be coming back! read more

My husband got me a couple of comic books from here for Christmas and was raving about how friendly and helpful the owner was. I can't wait to check it out for myself and will update my review when I do. Based on the books I got, it would seem they have a great and diverse selection and that books with SFPs are well-stocked :) Update: finally got a chance to go in myself. The layout is spacious, and well-organized. The guy working behind the desk wasn't the owner; but was really friendly and helpful (asked if I needed help, let me browse in peace when I said I didn't, then when I did have questions was really knowledgable and made great suggestions). 2nd update: check out the email they just sent me (attaching a pic). I love this shop. They often recommended things I ended up loving, back in the pre-COVID days. I was thrilled that they did all the work to make online ordering possible and opened up for curbside pickup. This is literally my favorite comic book store ever. I haven't always felt welcome in every comic book shop I have been in, but I've always felt warmly welcomed at Cape and Cowl. Pre-COVID programming including book clubs, boosting local artists, the Wic/Div wake, and celebrations of local events. I love and appreciate everyone who makes this place special. They also have a very dope all-ages section, which my nephews appreciate. During the summer, they sent recommendations for Black-owned comic book shops to support as well. For the first time in my life, I have a comic book shop only 4 blocks from where I live. As a comic geek, still not sure if this is dangerous or delightful. I think I discovered Cape & Cowl first by randomly walking around my new neighborhood. It was closed at the time, but I was joyed to know a quick walk was a comic shop. Definitely stopped in on a random day, got to talk with the owner Eitan and some of his staff and picked up some simple stuff. Came back with 2 friends on Free Comic Book Day - the store was doing a canned food drive for some extra comics, free tattoos, or just feeling good about donating. Picked up some solid stuff, but seeing how popular the store was was great. Likewise, got to see them at the Silicon Valley Comic Con and it's always a great to know your local shop also participates in local events. My most recent trip was a blast. Unfortunately Cape & Cowl, and all the comics in the area, got screwed by Diamond distributors so they had a store wide sale. Wasn't going to pass that up and got a trade I needed, some current issues, but also went to town on the back issues. Got a few new series I hadn't heard of like Genndy Tartakovsky's Cage and some classic Iron Fists I needed. The store is designed great - from the entrance to the right is the more kid friendly section, with comics, toys, and other things for the parents that just want to get in and out. To the left is the popular Trades, and along the wall the recent single issues to pickup with recommendations from the staff. Along the far wall are older back issues and the rare collections, and in the middle are the various trades and Funko Pop! toys. Speaking of, for each Funko Pop! you buy, you can get a card stamped, same with the Trades, so don't forget! At the counter are more toys, the random issues they are pricing and some card games. While the store is beautiful, clean, and stocked, the staff also makes this store. Every member I have had a great time talking with, especially for longer than I expected. These are fans who spend time and happy to help anyone or just talk, too. Hard to beat this as my neighborhood shop! read more

My favorite spot in town. Lovely staff that encourages me to pick up some really awesome series I wouldn't have otherwise touched (Kevin showed me Andrew Maclean's Head Lopper, which really is the best; Juliette introduced me to the wonderfully horrific fantasy, Monstress)! The owner, Eitan, makes a real effort to be accommodating and once even ran out of the store after me after finding something I was looking for. Pretty busy Wednesdays when new comics come in but their collection is well kept with the essentials plus a growing manga inventory I'm partial to. Helps that there's a stamp card for trade paperbacks. One of my favorite enamel pins they had randomly stocked from a local artist. Even has Magic cards for when I'm itching to crack a pack :) Fair warning... the space gets really warm so you better leave the jacket at home. read more

How could anyone not like this store, its a comic book shop for god's sake? I geek out when I come here, it's hard to contain myself because the whole concept of comics is mesmerizing to me. Anything is possible, you can root for the bad guy, you can side with a species and ones lack of imagination is our only limitation. If you know what you are looking for you can get in and out in a hurry, but for the average person this is a fun but time consuming process, as some search for key issues for their collection while others purchase for cover art, character, or artist. It honestly doesn't matter why you shop here, just keep shopping here because by doing so we keep the classic print format alive, when we forget we go digital. read more

We visited this great comic shop for Wonder Woman Day which also happened to be Oakland Carnival. But where else but a comic store would a little girl in a Grecian gown and a mom in a genie outfit fit in with the other families? No one even bat an eye. Not only was my daughter treated to her two free comic books and a coloring station but I also splurged on a hardcover and a Funko Pop for her sizable Wonder Woman collection. Staff is upbeat and friendly. The store itself is lovely, airy, and clean. read more

EXTREMELY unprofessional! I called to ask if a certain voice actor could make a personal appearance at this shop. Instead of telling me they were not interested, I was asked to call back another day to speak to the "manager" (suspecting he WAS he manager). When I did, this person said he researched this voice actor, and made a rather insulting remark. Then to add insult to injury, he posted about this incident on Twitter, calling it a "reverse prank" because he doesn't like this voice actor. NO ONE deserves to be treated that way. Not sure about the rest of you, but I wouldn't give a shop that handles their dealings in this manner any of my business! read more

Of the several comic stores I frequent in the bay area, I think that this is one is the best. They have a great selection of comic issues and volumes. They also have all the best bound books. But best of all, their owner and their staff are so "into" comics that it's a pleasure to talk to them. They give me honest assessments/opinions and referrals to similar comics/series. Love this place and everyone that works here. It's a small store and mostly carries main stream titles... Anything "underground" will be in graphic novel form but they do offer the wild title here and there with the monthlies. I highly suggest digging thru the dollar section as it's highly rotated and easy to score some weird miniseries... I've found alot of great black and white stuff from the 80s and 90s here. They have a good book discount program that is non app based to encourage repeated visits. They will help you find titles u missed that they had or books they don't normally carry. As far as buying comics, I'm pretty sure they are only interested in older collections unless u have something hella prime. Of course, they're not opendoor due to Covid rn but keep them in mind for curbside, online or later....? read more

Came for the comics, stayed for the staff. Eitan, the owner of this nice looking store initially seems like a friendly person. Then after you get to know him you realize he's actually a comic book nerd. It's a lot of fun to hang out in Cape & Cowl and shoot the breeze about the newest graphic novels and super hero shows. Very cool new spot!! I used to read a lot of comics, but now only read occasionally. When I popped in here, the owner Eitan helped me select a few graphic novels I'd never heard of before, and were really great. My buddy was with me, too, and he bought some Christmas presents for his brother. When I used to buy comics on a weekly basis, I always longed for a shop where I could have a subscription, chat with the owner, and just generally feel welcome and valued. If I had to guess, I think this is exactly what Cape & Cowl would be--the owner is enthusiastic, kind, and wasn't at all pushy. Plus, he gave me a free pair of sunglasses with my purchase! How cool is that!? Whenever I feel like picking up some graphic novels in the future, this will be my store. read more

As soon as I discovered this cozy comic shop it became my favorite. good selection, friendly staff.

So this is a new place that silently popped up 6 weeks ago. The owner (Aton I believe) was totally chill and normal. I don't go to comic stores for customer service normally, however, his was definitely on point. I like the was the store is organized also. Everything separated by shelves that creates little aisles almost. Organization is one of the keys to success. Needless to say, I found things TOO GOOD and had to put a few things back. This is my favorite comic store in the Bay Area, CA. It has all kinds of dope hometown themed releases and merchandise as well as quality comics. They have some amazing finds in their older section and they always have my new Rick and Morty books when they come out. Their Funko Pop frequent buyer card is an awesome thing they offer! This is an awesome shop for both life-long comic fans and for those who are new to the medium. Eitan, the owner, is very approachable, knowledgable, and laid-back which makes browsing in the shop feel very comfortable as if you've known him for years. The shop is clean, well-organized, and very welcoming; The atmosphere/ambiance/vibe (whatever you want to call it) reminds me of the old-school sitcom "Cheers" where everything feels familiar as if you've been a long-time regular to a shop with a lot of character. Two words: Loyalty Card! Buy 9 and get the 10th one free? Schyea! I typically don't give things like this a second thought, but being that I recently got back into comics after a decade+ hiatus, it's always nice when a shop recognizes and appreciates your business with a simple promo like this.
