I went there on Labor Day around 6pm with an emergency for my LuLu (mini dachshund) who got bit by another dog. When we got there, they took Lulu right away and then within 15 minutes we saw the vet. They had to keep her there for a few hours in order to fit her in their rotation of patients and they sent us home and they said that they will call us when she is ready. They called at 10:30 pm and we went to pick her up. Excellent service. The removal of stitches was a bit of a hassle. I call a few days later to set an appointment to remove the stitches and they said that I don't need an appointment, that I should just call when I am ready to come down with LuLu and they will let me know what time would be good. When I called on the 12th day, the phones were transferred to Bourne. They told me that the Dennis location is closed and only open on the weekends??? Why didn't they tell me that when I called to set an appointment. Even thou the stitches removal was included in the price I paid $1600, I ended up call my Vet Tech, that comes to my house to do my dogs nails, came over the next morning and removed them for me. Her name is Lianna Heard, Cape Cod Veterinary Technician Services. She is extremely careful and great with all three of my dogs. I highly recommend her for any home services for your pets. read more

We had a negative experience with Cape Cod Vet Specialists. We brought our dog in for sudden facial swelling. As soon as we walked in the receptionist looked at him and said "oh looks like it may be an abscess" which is what we were thinking too. Granted he has some vet anxieties which we told them about, Dr. Lee did not examine our dog at all and did not even weigh him. He poked the swollen part of his face with a pen like object and said since it's hard, it's a tumor. He wrote down three possible tumors on a piece of paper, said "I'm sorry to tell you this" several times, and said an X-ray would be 2k and surgery would be 10k, but would be risky due to placement and his age. We left with antibiotics and pain meds. We took our dog to Angell Memorial in Boston the next morning. After extensive testing and examinations, they confirmed it was an ABSCESS, not a tumor and drained it, and also drained all the fluid from his neck. They also nicely informed us the antibiotic Dr. Lee prescribed was nowhere near enough for my dog's weight. Makes sense since they didn't even weigh him. See below post from another lady who was also told her dog had CANCER when it was just an asbcess. It's awful to tell patients their dog has cancer, without any extensive testing, and to make them worry all night long that their dog is going to die. Update: My rabbit is dead. She had to be euthanized out of my presence and she was furiously attempting to get out of the carrier and get to me. I am inconsolable and still grieving deeply. She leapt onto my chest at a vet appointment. Beatrix and I had a very special bond; she was rescued by me as a baby, and had clearly been beaten or traumatized previously. She went from attacking me to the sweetest bunny ever over time. She would even vocalize to me, which is rare for rabbits. You can never replace her and I am wracked with guilt about her loss. I can barely think about her without completely breaking down. Hope this makes you feel like the absolute shit that you are. All you love is MONEY. Shameful. This is a very good, full service vet, open 24/7. My dog got into some kind of neuro toxin and the people at the vet were amazingly good. He hates going to the vet but the tech just came over and slowly unhooked his lead and picked him up and off he went with no fuss. He was being checked 15 minutes after I arrived and they kept him over night to be sure he was ok. I just got the call that he's ready to come home. Yay! They're expensive but if your dog needs help, this is the place to go. read more

This place is absolutely pathetic. I have reached out numerous times this week to speak to management regarding the recent treatment of my animal, and of course no return call. It's clear they care about owners concerns as much as they care about treating animals appropriately. This isn't my first pathetic experience with this hospital and affiliates but will certainly be my last. My animals have been inappropriately treated in the past by not only removing medication they actually needed in one instance. In another prescribing an inaccurate dosage. They overcharged me, only when I questioned did they "find a mistake" and refund me. They let my cat lick herself raw after repeated complaints by me that she was still having an issue "they didn't see her licking herself". Finally when she did lick herself raw did they treat her and not charge me, gee thanks. Just let my pet be uncomfortable through it all. This last time though is just atrocious! Your hospital was the one to diagnose my pet with megacolon. She immediately went to an internal medicine Dr. in Boston for proper treatment and diagnosis. Your hospital couldn't see us for months.. In her recent diet change she got severely constipated. I brought her to your Dennis location as I hoped they would be better than your Bourne location. Sadly it was worse!! You gave her 1 enema, some fluids, and some pain meds and sent us on our way. The woman i spoke to when I called was very nice. The woman who greeted us when we got there was huffing and puffing and seemed inconvenienced we were there. We as owners are stressed enough in these situations we don't need the attitude too. Before we left I asked if she had gone and how much so I knew what to expect. I was told she didn't and maybe 24hrs. We were on day 4 already and clearly it was a problem. I did not see the X-ray that day. I saw the X-ray the following day when I took my animal to Boston for proper treatment. I could have brought her back and had no recheck fee it wasn't even worth it. That is how awful this place is. I would rather pay again and drive from the cape to Boston after giving this place $800 the day before to literally do nothing. Your hospital and Dr should be ashamed to have let my animal leave that day without proper treatment. Boston took one look at the X-ray and admitted her for overnight. She needed IV fluids not subq as she was severely dehydrated. She needed more than one enema , not one and some miralax. The fact your Dr. actually suggested miralax after seeing that X-ray is concerning in itself!!! I have spent thousands at your hospitals over the years, because I care and want what is best for my animals, it is too bad you don't as well. To anyone that read this far keep driving. Cape Cod Emergency vet has not my expectations on 2 occasions. Recently, my dog was sent from our primary vet for critical emergency care. I was not allowed in to be with him. He died scared and alone. I brought my dog to the Dennis location as Bourne was closed due to covid. He was transported him in the morning to Bourne hospital after the vet informed me they would not transport him if he was critical. My dog died shortly after arriving. They had taken a deposit and refunded me an incorrect amount, then demanded I pay them after issuing a credit or they would take me to court.. Tell me, if they cannot handle billing correctly, how can they handle an emergency critical medical need? On another occasion I brought my dog on a holiday as she had an abscessed tooth. They misdiagnosed her as having mouth cancer and wanted to do extensive tests which I would not allow. I wanted antibiotics and a tooth extraction which they could not do. An emergency vet that can not do a tooth extraction does not seem competent. My vet extracted the tooth and my dog had no cancer. Unfortunately this is the only emergency vet on Cape. Their prices rape the pet owner, they have little compassion, do not stand by their errors and attempt to do unnecessary procedures. I have lost my precious dog and they have lost my business. read more

Dr Lavoie, Dr. Toleson, Leigh and everyone else who took care of Shiner was phenomenal. I am a veterinarian in Texas and found myself in an emergency with my own dog while visiting my family 2000 miles away from home. My chihuahua had a sand impaction and I am so grateful that CCVS was there to be her vet when I couldn't. I can't thank y'all enough for taking care of Shiner. After almost 24 hours in the hospital I am happy to report she pooped out the rest of her sand and is completely back to herself. Thank y'all for all your hard work!! read more

While on the Cape for the weekend, we needed to see a vet to address two issues-- a hot spot and a small laceration-- with our pup. In our experience, the staff are phenomenal across the board, from the initial phone conversation to our front desk experience to the vet tech. All are extremely patient, direct, positive, compassionate, and professional in every sense. Dr. Lee is a outstanding veterinarian-- exuding all of the above qualities in spades and demonstrating comprehensive expertise in our pup's treatment. Liz also stands out in delivering such thorough and responsive discharge care. We are so appreciative and could not be any more impressed with every aspect of this clinic. read more

Our pooch fell ill while we were on the Cape. CCVS was able to see us on a Sunday. The staff was extremely friendly and caring. The doctor that treated her was excellent - probably the best vet visits we've ever had. Just remember, emergency care isn't cheap. Diagnostics are a necessary evil to identify root cause, and yes those are pricey too. All in all, I found the wait to be reasonable as was the cost of the visit. read more

I have brought several pets here for emergency and weekend visits. I have always been happy with the care from the receptionists, vet techs and vets. The vets are wonderful about explaining the diagnostics and treatments. CCVS is an always open emergency veterinarian. We have used them twice in 2 years: once for constant seizures, and now for an avulsed toenail. Both were handled properly and promptly, with care and caring. I know they can be insanely busy during high season, but this is a good place thst knows what they are doing. They do charge-minimum is $208, but it costs money to have a vet always available. read more

On my puppy's first ever visit to the beach, he decided to secretly eat sand and a seashell which then caused an impact in his intestines. We've only had him 3 weeks, and this being our first emergency situation could not have felt better about bringing him to CCVS in Dennis. Despite them visibly being extremely busy with many emergencies, especially during Covid, they were so pleasant, attentive and made sure to consistently check in with me. It was scary having to leave him overnight- but they made the whole situation much more bearable. Some of the complaints on here about being upfront with payment was fully appreciated as there were no surprises. In the end, I ended up paying less then their conservative quote. Yes, it's expensive, but knowing my puppy was getting the best care it was worth every penny. Both vets I spoke to were open, honest, and clear on what my options were. I would highly recommend coming here if you find yourself in an emergency situation with your pet! read more

Amazing AMAZING place! We just brought my brothers dog in bleeding all over the place, they fixed her up in record time and had us on our way without breaking the bank. I am so impressed with these guys I wish they were a full time veterinary clinic because I would switch all of my animals to them in a heart beat. Took my dog in at 3 am and the Vet has the receptionist tell me they needed 1/2 of the estimate ($6000.) up front, and if I couldn't do that then I should apply for the Care credit card... Really.... I'm not joking at 3 am.. I told the receptionist she could tell the Vet she can have 400 up front and we see how it goes, or I'll take the dog home. She agreed. We are so incredibly thankful to all the wonderful people at CARE. We brought in our Chesapeake Bay Retriever with a bloody ear after being bit by another dog on a Saturday afternoon. We received excellent and compassionate care from the entire staff. The vet we saw clearly explained why the bottom half of her ear needed to be removed and walked us through surgery. We were given an estimate of the cost, and a time to pick her back up. The vet called personally as soon as the procedure was over. We picked her up and the vet tech explained how to care for her, and answered all of our questions. When I called back with even more questions as soon as we got home, I got a very prompt and thorough response. They also called to check up on our dog. Her ear healed beautifully without any complications. read more

1/9/18 st 10:40pm . Dennis, Ma. Hospital. I brought my dog in due to symptoms of not eating , shaking , wasn't moving too much all day . I called ahead of time and the receptionist seemed a little off. No empathy. Receptionist advised that I live in Centerville and should go to Buzzards Bay (which is longer distance ). I mentioned it was a longer distance . She asked how long will I be ( annoyed) . I mentioned 20 minutes. I walked in and there was no one there . No other patients or people . As the door opened with the receptionist, there was no introduction or greeting or personality. She looked annoyed. Just the cost of the initial visit seemed to be the focus and I felt rushed with the dog . The receptionist was rushing to do pre check. I completely forgot my wallet at home ( how embarrassing) with all the stress of trying to get my dog there. I'm not sure if this has happened before to ccsv . But I got the look. They took the dog to the back . 5 minutes doctor Anna came out. No introduction, no empathy . Very cold. I vowed ., when i returned home I would give my card and it would be paid ) I felt that this was why I wAs treated by the vet like this) . I Mentioned this over and over as I felt like I was being treated cold . I asked her twice if she weighed the dog . They had not. I'm not a vet , but isn't that what they do during pre check? My dog was dehydrated and I wanted to make sure he didn't lose a substantial amount weight. They gave me options and I decided on X-rays . They mentioned it was 340.00 for X-rays and I clearly understood. My dogs health was more important . The diagnoses was stomach nausea perhaps. *We don't know . He was dehydrated a bit with soft stool. The doctor Anna did not even come out after we decided on what we would do with possible treatment. No good luck .. nothing . Never came out . Just rude. I was so unhappy and all the doctors there are all usually amazing . But this doctor and receptionist were impersonal and horrible. And they had no patients! There was a nice woman that came out to discuss how to give the medication . She smiled and was kind . I thanked for being so kind . ( I almost cried) I assured I would call in my credit info as soon as I got home . She was pleasant and told me not to worry .. the dogs okay that's important . She was very sincere and kind. I payed $625.01 as soon as I returned home over the phone. And honestly . I would pay anything to make sure my dog wasn't sick or suffering. I'm hoping that they followed protocol and did what was needed to make sure In their initial check. All the checks were done without me in the room. I'm disappointed in the lack of professionalism of the staff members on duty ( except for the woman at the end of the discharge she was professional ) . Completely Unacceptable. read more

This place is called Cape Cod Veterinary Specialist now and maybe it has improved since it's been taken over. But in any case, the care we got there couldn't have been kinder or better and I'd highly recommend them. We brought our dog in on Saturday as he was losing control over his hind legs and getting worse by the hour. The vet on duty, Dr. Bridget Tobleman, checked our dog out and told us we needed to get him up to VCA in Weymouth as soon as possible where they could do an MRI to confirm what she feared and where they had neurologists on call who could operate. She called up to VCA and spoke with them before we left and they were ready for us when we got there. She was correct in her diagnosis -- he'd herniated a disc and it was bleeding into his spinal cord -- and my dog was in surgery by 10 that night. And, CCVS didn't charge us anything! But she did warn us were we'd be facing at least $8,000 up at the specialist vet. It will be well over that by our guy comes home, since he is still up there and has had some complications. I think Dr. Tobleman saved my dog's life, or at least his mobility, by triaging his injury correctly, explaining clearly what needed to be done and knowing where this kind of speciality treatment could be found. We are very thankful CCVS is there in Dennis and is staffed with such expertise. read more

Personally I have had very limited experience with this business, and it was many years ago, but I do remember being satisfied. My dog was examined on a non-emergency basis by an eye specialist. It sounds from the negative reviews that there were some inconsistencies in quotes for services, but other than that it sounds like the reviewers were in highly emotional states and ready to blame anybody for anything. With regard to the fees quoted, they are probably consistent with other veterinary practices, including the Foster Small Animal Hospital at Tufts, one of the best in the country. We have taken our animals there many times and spent thousands of dollars. As far as I know, they too have an "up front" policy regarding payment. You are presented with your options immediately, one of which in very serious and expensive cases, is euthanasia. While the care is extremely compassionate, one has to understand that they simply cannot make exceptions because they are a business. And unfortunately while their fees are based on the assumption of a positive outcome, they require them in advance because, in the event of an adverse outcome, they know some people would simply refuse to pay. I have not been paid by anybody to write this and have no special attachment to this clinic, but have made these comments simply in the interest of fairness. read more

I'm sure that the vets and staff here vary, but I am so lucky I came: maybe it depends on the vet? I saw a great woman, Dr Hennessy. I brought my dog in at 4 am in severe respiratory distress, and she was awesome. She couldn't help him that much, because they didnt have the capability to do the procedure necessary, but she honestly told me that i should get him off Cape asap, and get him to a place where he could get the right procedures. She correctly diagnosed the problem (which neither of the other two vets on the Cape did) and I'm sure that saved his life. I'm really grateful. read more

Everyone please excuse Betrayed's comment! Harrington is not a doctor she is an ultra sound tech. She doesn't give meds to patients. Also the cat was never seen @ CARE. It was only given an ultra sound per Betrayed's doctor. Also I personally spoke with this woman and she is not only crazy but extremely rude. It is so sad that misinformation can result in someone not coming to such a great place. This building I no longer CARE it is now run by Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists. They provide a much higher standard of care and treatment with staffed top notch doctors and technicians. There are two locations the CARE locations and also Buzzards Bay. Please don't let bad reviews make your choices for you. A lot of them are 100% wrong information. read more

On June 19th at about 12:30 at night my four-year-old German Shepherd, Winston woke me up and was in terrible pain. He had vomited, was pacing, panting, could not stand or lay down. I immediately drove him to the Cape Cod Animal Referral and Emergency Center (C.A.R.E.) on Theophilus Smith Road in South Dennis, Massachusetts. The doors were locked, I rang for assistance and the attendant let me in. I told her Winston was in severe pain, she called the doctor. We waited ten minutes and I reminded her that he was in pain. She asked me if I wanted to sign a document that would acknowledge that it was an "emergency" and she told me the cost would be an immediate $1,000. I said no, that we were the only ones there. She then put us in a small exam room where we waited another 15 minutes. I complained again and soon the doctor came in . She said she thought Winston had "torsion" and immediately took him into the back for an x-ray. Ten to Fifteen minutes later she returned showed me the x-ray and said she was sure it was "torsion" although she really could not see his stomach. She said the cost would be almost $5000 and "that is a conservative estimate." I told her that I did not have $5000 and she said "ok we can do a credit plan." I said that that was too much for me. She said alright, I need to take another x-ray and will have to anesthetize him. When she returned, she said she thought it was "torsion" and I said I did not have the $5000. She said alright the bill right now is $600.00, why don't you leave him here for two hours for observation and the total will be $1000.00. I told her he was in too much pain. We discussed putting him to sleep. The doctor immediately started to describe the various prices for cremation including various "deluxe" options. I must of looked like I was going to kill her and the doctor said "alright we will put him in a box and you can pick him up tomorrow." I began writing out a check to pay the bill and the clerk said "we don't take checks." I pointed to Winston's chart that was on the screen and said "we have been in here at least four times, and I have always paid with a check." "All right she said, but they might call you early tomorrow morning." Hawking their wares from the moment we walked through the door....and my heart is broken. I picked-up Winston...in the box the next morning and buried him in my yard. read more

After reading the two reviews, I was very upset. I brought in my dog there because it was a holiday and my vet was closed. I had been told she had hemolytic anemia a few days before. This day she seemed worse and I took her in. I was told to wait and when the vet came to me , she said it would cost $1000 to keep her over night and $5000 to give her blood transfusions. I asked if they could check with my vet as I did not have her blood counts and could not say if her condition was worse or better. This was not possible. I wanted to take the dog home and take her to my vets the next day and she would not release the dog to me. I had to give them $5000 or they would not do anything. If I did not have the money they would put her down. I had to put her down and was devastated. When I spoke to the my vet the next day , she said her blood count was not worse and she would probably have been okay with a few more days of medication. It has been three years since this happened and I still feel sad when I think of it. . I am glad to have found this site and to see that I was not alone in what I went through. I know someone right now being told the same thing, same prices . Her dog was hit by a car and has a broken pelvis. She was told unless she gave them $3000 on the spot they would not help her dog. She had to come with another $ 3000 in a few days or they would not operate on the dog. This is disgusting and the center should be shut down! read more

Quacks! My dog came down with what we thought was lyme disease. Within hours of what we thought was a thorn in a paw due to a slight limp became complete loss of ability to use his front legs, fever, and listlessness. After $800 worth of tests (whose results would not be available for a couple days due to the normal process and compounded by a holiday weekend), the doctor said that she thought it was lyme. However, she would not treat it with the appropriate antibiotics saying that the tests were not back, and so the diagnosis was inconclusive, and instead hydrated the dog with an IV and gave him (or should I say, sold us) some kind of an anti-inflammatory. In essence, treating all of the symptoms of the disease, but not the disease itself! They also wanted to keep the dog overnight, for OBSERVATION, whilst still not giving the poor animal treatment for his ailment. Upon coming home from vacation a couple of days later, my personal veterinarian literally said that they were, "QUACKS, that proper protocol would have been to begin an antibiotic regimen for the suspected disease. There is no harm to the dog and the seriousness of the disease warrants treatment," which he began even though the tests were still not back. A few days later the tests revealed that the dog had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, a tic borne disease, very similar to lyme, and treated exactly the same... with 2 months of antibiotics. If I had to characterize this place I would say that they were misguided and wrongheaded. Avoid them if possible. read more

One must remember when reading these reviews, everyones experience is different. CARE is an emergency hospital and therefore, yes, the fees are higher than your regular vet but their service and expertise is well worth it. I had an emergency with my cat in the middle of the night and she was saved by the caring and knowledgeable doctors there.They we there when I needed them most. I cant express my gratitude enough. I dont know that she would have made it if I had to drive off cape for her to be seen at another ER. They are compassionate and presented all options to me when deciding what to do with my pet. The doctors and staff are caring and there because of the animals, not to monopolize or rack up anyones bill. Going through a life threatening situation with your beloved pet is an extremely emotional experience and sometimes people take this out on the people providing the service or providing them the news that is sometimes hard to hear. I would recommend CARE to anyone in an emergency with their pet, they are reliable, knowledgeable and caring. read more
