I started a project today with fabric I bought from this place. I bought the fabric for my mom who is the quilter and asked for help from the staff to ensure i was buying enough. The pattern called for a quarter yard of 30 different fabrics. The fabric is beautiful and they had a great selection for what I wanted to do. But because of how terrible they cut the fabric we have had to rethink the entire pattern, shrink every cut, and figure out how to maximize the Mis-measured scraps. I told them I wasn't the quilter. You'd think they would have advised me better: "hey, you might want to buy a third of a yard just in case." ... or, I understand now that many places just throw in an extra inch. But this place measured right on the dot and then cut it wonky. If you're gonna cut exact measurements, you better be sure to cut right! read more

I discovered this quilt shop after purchasing some fabric from them at the Annapolis quilt show. I was very impressed with the large selection of fabric that they brought to the show and the woman working the booth was very friendly. I decided to make the hike to the store (45 minutes from my house) and was not disappointed. This store is bright, open and airy but yet still manages to have a huge selection of organized fabric and supplies as well as customer quilts displayed on the wall. I really love how everything had price tags/labels, making it easy to decide on purchases and get the information needed. There were also several signs and projects all around which were advertisements for upcoming classes, but yet inspiring to see. The shop also had a large Janome section of machines that you could look at and test out. I was very pleased that there were several employees working to help customers and while I was looking around the store overheard the employees making conversation with the customers about their fabric choices and projects. An employee named Jan approached me and asked me if I needed help. I explained that I was new to the shop and she spent several minutes answering my tons of questions I had about this new shop. She was so patient and willing to help me, not only with products but general sewing questions since I'm still a beginner. She also was not pushy or 'salesy'. I was very pleased with this shop, and the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars, is because I have only been to a few quilt stores and don't have too much to compare it to. I definitely plan on visiting this shop again (drive or not) because from what I can gather, THIS is the quilt shop you hope for in your sewing career. You can tell that the employees that run this business not only care, but are interested in quilting/sewing and are truly invested in this shop and the customer base. I was even more pleased when I researched their website when I got home. There is so much information available and interesting classes that you can take at various times (not just weekends). Pandemic Shopping at its finest! Forced to buy fabric online, and wanting to make a baby quilt, I selected some fabrics from Capital Quilts website, and sent them an email with a few questions. They pulled the fabrics I was considering, gave an opinion, and sent me photos of the fabrics together so I could decide if I was happy with my selections. I have now ordered three times, they were so very helpful! Fabrics are high quality and beautiful. And a bonus- they ship very quickly! read more

Brought my high-end Janome machine there for servicing on Aug. 22, 2019 because they advertise they are a "Certified" Janome Dealer. Unfortunately, they had my machine for well over two months with no serving. Reasonably, during this time I called several times--with a couple of emails in between--to find out the status of my machine. No one ever called me back with any information. (Nothing, zilch, nadda, insert crickets here). Now, I work at another fabric store that deals with another machine brand. Never, would any of those technicians or owner be so passive when it comes to their customers. It would be a disgrace. I finally gave in and went there to pick up my machine in the same situation as it was dropped off on Oct. 26, 2019. The sales person there said, she had notes: Apparently, one of their techs spoke to a Janome HQ tech (why they never told me this is a mystery) and said I should use a more heavy duty machine. Now, I've been sewing for more than 50 years. Three of the previous machines I've owned and worked on were Janomes (6600, 12,000, current high end) and I've never had the trouble with these. Why then would I need to use a more heavy duty machine when I do the same type of sewing as I did before? Also, I'm one of those people that read sewing machine manuals and relay best practices to customers on how to use them. I can only hope that when I report all this to Janome HQ, they can provide me with a reputable dealer that would have technicians with good communication skills along with their technical. Hopefully, they will service my current Janome machine, which is still under a limited warranty! read more

I was roaming around Gaithersburg the other day and stumbled upon Capital Quilts. I was pretty stoked because I'm an avid sewer and new to the area and I read about this shop on forums online before I even moved here. See, I'm from the Midwest and everyone there knows that quilt shops are the best place to buy unique, quality fabrics. Capital Quilts is about half the size of most of the quilt shops I used to frequent. Roaming around I noticed that the fabric selection wasn't anything to write home about. Unfortunately, I didn't see anything that I wanted to buy (very unusual for me). Maybe I was expecting too much. If I lived closer I would definitely think about signing up for a class or two. I got a really friendly vibe from the employees. They all seemed sweet and were giving knowledgeable sewing advice to the many customers who were there. I'm sure I'll be back! read more

Yesterday was my birthday and I decided to treat myself to some fabric. I needed backings and borders for some batik quilts. I have vowed to finish my UFO's this month and went to their batik section. I could not decide on a border on a qilt I took in with me that needed both a border and a backing. There were only 2 employees in the store and I wanted help finding one. I waited 15 minutes for the one employee cutting fabric for someone to help me. I had other quilts in my car I was hoping to buy backing for. She spent 2 minutes with me then asked if she could go cut fabric for another person and ran off on me. This was my third negative experience at this store by the way! I waited my turn and wanted help. I folded my quilt back up and walked out very disappointed and vowed to never go back! I moved to Maryland not long ago, and this was my first visit to Capital Quilts. They have a great selection of fabrics, and the shop is bright and spotlessly clean. I visited the store when I was in town on business. The selection is amazing. I wish I had had a specific project I was working on because I know I would have left with all of the blenders that I needed. They have a great selection of batiks and solid colors. Ok, it's a bit far for someone who lives in VA, but it's worth the trip. Many, many beautiful fabrics and quaters available in this 3-roomed shop. For the most part, fabrics arranged by color makes browsing very easy. The fabric is cut using a wheel and you're given a extra inch. Very friendly staff also teaches sewing classes and will try their hardest to turn you into a quilter. Watch out! read more

Capital Quilts is the only shop for buying fabric! The selection is huge, the professional and friendly assistance is second to none. The staff helps you in selecting your fabrics and offers suggestions if you find yourself stuck with a project and not sure what to do next (this isn't me, of course, but I've heard of this from other quilters -- LOL!) Excellent selection of accessories and books. My favourite thing is probably the grab bags that the staff makes up with a variety of colour-theme fabrics -- great jumping off point for a project. They also carry a wonderful assortment of panels which can be difficult to find as well as historically accurate fabrics (think Civil War era fabrics), Aborigine designs, Asian designs, Kaffe Fassett complete line, huge selection of batiks. They also offer a great variety of classes and community/charity work through the art of quilting. Basically -- fabulous store! read more

I frequent a number of different quilting shops, depending on what I need; they all have different fabrics and cater to different types of quilters. Capital Quilts is the closest to my home, and my "go to" when I need help. In the last year, I have made four quilts, and with each I needed help choosing background and border fabrics. In each case, the folks at Capital Quilts came through, and in one case, they even recommended an alternative placement of my quilted squares, which made the quilt so much better. What really made me a customer for life was my experience today. I needed a border for a quilt, and after spending almost an hour with me looking at this fabric and that, the lovely lady helping on me suggested a different way of using the fabric I already owned. I left with a solution to my problem and did not make a purchase, and both of us were happy. Not every store would do that, and it's why I keep coming back. read more

This is my favorite quilt shop in the Maryland/DC/Virginia area. They have a huge supply of fabric, and the sale fabric selection in the long arm quilting room is not to be missed! They have a huge supply of other sewing and quilting accessories, and a wonderful supply of templates by Marti Michell (very hard to find). I have never seen more interspersing patterns, and also have lots of panels. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable, and not pushy. Their class selection is also amazing. I went there with my visiting sister, who is a quilter. I am not but do have a degree in interior design. Both of us were impressed by several aspects. First impression was how immaculate the store was. Second was how many lovely fabric choices they have, sorted not only by color but also by type (e. g., batik). We had gone to a couple of other stores and none had such pretty ones. There's a real artistic eye in their purchaser. Third, they have beautiful examples of quilts on display and classes you can take. My sister found the perfect fabric but, unfortunately, did not estimate correctly and needed more. I went back with a sample. The lady worked with me to find the fabric, which they were out of, and tried to help me find an alternative, which they didn't have, either. I appreciated how accommodating she was. I hope they do well. read more

I've always had such bad customer service at Capital Quilts, that I have sworn I will never be back. I notice that they are very friendly to older women, but I am in my mid-30s. They generally ignore my presence completely, but when I need help they are reluctant to give it. The one time I took my child in so I could grab something really fast they treated me like I had just brought in a stinky, flea ridden dog. And my kid was contained to a stroller, so he wasn't causing any problem. They do have some beautiful fabrics and batiks, but I'm through with this store thanks to their poor customer service. read more

Love, Love, Love this store. When I discovered them, I had no clue about quilting. I've been sewing garments and traditional things since a child. But quilting is very different technique than garment construction. I've taken many classes and feel I am much more knowledgeable now than I was the first time I walked in the door. This is my "Cheers", I'm known by name and greet by everyone that works there by my name, if there is a new employee that I don't know I will talk to them and let them get to know me. This store might be smaller than some other quilt stores I got to visit during Quilt Quest on the bus sponsored by Capital, which was a great adventure! It is small and mighty, don't underestimate it by the size. I love the services they have to offer, my favorite is on the last friday of the month Sit and Stitch, it is a free event, where you bring your project, machine and work on it. Visit with other quilters and get ideas from each other. Oh yeah and there's snacks that people bring/donate for the evening. For me it's great because I have about 3 hours of pet free sewing time. read more

Here's my take on CQ: 5 stars for inventory. 2 for customer service. I really want to like this store. I learned to quilt here in a ten week course, during which the owner NEVER introduced herself to potential customers. I live close by, so I tend to spend some money here, but my major complaint is that no one EVER comes up and says" "what are you making? let me help you pick out fabrics." No one seems to be excited about working here. I will give a shout out to Barbara, who always remembers me and greets me....but as for the others....nothing. Since the change in ownership, the shop has expanded in space and choice of fabrics. I really love the new choices of fabric. There are, as other have pointed out, staff members who are not particularly friendly - either they don't smile or they are a bit snooty. That's something they have to work on. There are not a lot of quilt shops in the area, so fortunately we have this very good one right here in Gaithersburg. Capital Quilts is a wonderful store with oodles of gorgeous high quality quilting cottons. They have been recently expanding and in addition to a larger footprint with more class space, they also carry more fabrics. They have fantastic class offerings and will often have little fat quarter kits or patterns that I just can't live without. I always enjoy a trip there and I confess, go home with a lighter wallet, but a more diverse stash! read more

Thought I would give them another try since they had some positive reviews (must be family members). This place is Terrible! Actually worse than Joann's and this is a quilt shop! The employees know nothing about the classes or quilting or fabric. Honestly. I tried signing up for one of the classes and gave the name and date and the lady said she never heard of it and giggled. I asked to speak with a manager since it was in a email I received that day from the shop. The lady said the manager was too busy to speak with me. Really?! I asked her to check the classes again and she found it. She was surprised and giggled some more. It then took her another 20minutes and me repeating my cc info 3 times to actually pay for the class. Of course she giggled each time she made an error and had to start over. Another time I went in for help to figure out how much yardage of fabric I should get for the borders, binding, and backing of a quilt top I brought in. I was ready to spend a couple hundred on the fabric and they just shrugged. I asked again if anyone could help me figure it out and the 2 saleswomen just gave me 2 different random numbers that made no sense. They didn't measure my quilt or do any calculations. I asked how they each came up with their numbers and they said they were guesstimates. I asked if there was anyone there who did quilting and they said that person didn't work on that day. OMG! Honestly, I really am better oFB at Joann's, at least they give coupons. read more

I just visited there for servicing as they are a janome service location. I dropped off my machine. I was treated so oddly at the store I think because I am a young sewer and I am not a quilter. I felt as if I was a 5year old being scolded. Listen I am a seasoned sewer. I know that many of the customers that were there were 40+ years older than me. However I know how to sew and I love it, i have sewed many things. Just because I don't quilt doesn't mean I am less of a customer. I have never gotten such odd treatment at any sewing store before. I've been to a lot of quilt shops around the country and this is by far my favorite! The staff are very knowledgeable and extremely friendly - always really happy to help pick out just the right fabric for a project or to offer helpful suggestions when I'm not sure what to do to next. Their selection of fabrics including batiks is incredible, I love all their holiday materials and their classes are great and reasonably priced. You could spend hours just looking at all the fabric in the spacious, well lit store and even the bolts in the clearance area are gorgeous and on sale! I know I spend way too much whenever I go, but shopping there is really fun so I'm never sorry! read more

I've had really poor customer service from Gary McLaughlin, one of the owners. I bought a fat quarter (a precut piece of fabric) on the suggestion of the saleswomen. I wasn't sure it matched but she told me I could always change it. I knew the next day it didn't match; I called and confirmed that I could exchange it. When I got to the store Gary rudely told me that they don't allow *any* exchanges and took away the saleswoman who'd been helping me select other fabric. While I enjoyed the classes at Capital Quilts, I don't want to deal with mean people. I'll never go back. I can't believe they'd be so rude over a $2.00 piece of fabric. read more
