My mother recommended G Street Fabrics to me after our local JoAnn closed, and she spoke highly of the store from her years of shopping here. I wanted to continue supporting it for that reason and for its sense of community, but my experiences have been consistently disappointing. Yesterday was my final straw. I am new to sewing and come in seeking guidance on fabric selection and product education, yet nearly every visit is met with dismissive or rude customer service. The older representatives in particular often do not greet me and respond reluctantly or faintly when I ask for assistance. Help is provided, but it often feels like an inconvenience unless they are in the mood. Yesterday, when I asked a representative at the fabric counter for help understanding a product, she was short-tempered and instead told me they were closing at 5:15 p.m., despite the website listing a 7:30 p.m. closing time. The interaction felt rushed, dismissive, and disrespectful. At checkout, I asked for a bag for several small tools and fabric. The cashier said they were running low, and etc and tossed the bag at me. This type of behavior has happened on multiple visits and consistently dampens the experience. I truly wanted to like this store, but the repeated lack of basic courtesy--especially toward newer customers--has made me unwilling to return. They've been in business for over 80 years, and their deep sewing knowledge really sets them apart from other stores. Most employees have been here for years--some for decades--which truly shows their dedication and love for what they do. Even the store owners are very dedicated; you'll often see them on the floor greeting customers, which shows how much they care. Courtney is super helpful and really knows pattern making, Linda has been part of G Street for decades, and Leo is incredibly knowledgeable and always willing to help. They also offer upholstery services and sewing-machine repairs--both of which have saved me more than once. And I have to give a special shout-out to Lew, the sewing tech. He's the absolute best and always knows exactly how to fix any issue. I can't recommend G Street enough. I love this place! During all the shelter-in-place that was happening, sewing became my pandemic hobby and therapy. A coworker told me about this place and even though it is a bit of a drive from where I was, I skipped lunch and swung by before my flight out of BWI. And yep it was worth the drive! There are two buildings. The one closer to the street is for selling sewing machines. The one in the back is for fabric and other sewing supplies. The place is very neat and clean. I read about the discount room on Yelp and so after browsing around the rest of the store, I decided to spend majority of my time to dig through piles and piles of fabric in the discount room in hopes of finding treasures. There's absolutely no organization in this discounted area, everything is $2.97/yd! It seems to be a first come first serve thing, and if you want something the etiquette is you put it in a basket or cart to claim it. Some ladies weren't following this etiquette and it was frustrating for myself and other customers when we thought we found treasure only to find out 5 minutes later she said the pile belonged to her and she was saving it. I found 2 really pretty pieces to take home. The gentlemen's working there helped me measure. I noticed the people working there seemed kind of bored or low energy. There's a lot of customers but the staff just stood around and waited for people to go to them. Maybe most people are usuals and know exactly what they are looking for, but I'm used to some of the other small fabric shops I've visited where the staff are super energetic and offers me a 5 minute overview of where's what in the store. I am so glad this place exists as it seems like, with all the cheap fast fashion available, DIY is going extinct. But after a visit today I have to state something here. I just got back from Europe and was browsing some of the fabric stores there. Handwork. sewing and DIY is in fact experiencing a renaissance globally, and is now even trendy. The British SewingBee is a great show eg. Design, quality and colors of fabric there are so exciting! However, G Street fabrics selection is not. They do have most basics in basic colors, which is great. Fortunately even still real wool fabrics (could not find ANY at JoAnns). But they do not carry any monk cloth for the very popular needle punching ("never heard of it") for example. Nothing much outside the box that makes my heart sing or the fingers swoon. The printed patterns are plenty but frumpy and tacky, stuck in granny land. Whoever the buyer for Gstreet fabric is could use a makeover and needs to study the international DIY market and trends at international trade shows. I would love to see more fun colors and patterns. Some midcentury modern for example, or Marimekko, Kaffe Fassett, Kate Rees, Bauhaus, Annie Albers etc. read more

Lew Geiger did a wonderful job of repairing my Bernina 880 Plus, after I had bad service from two other Bernina dealer technicians. Lew was very thorough in checking the machine and straightening out the mistakes the other technicians had made. He took the time to review the machine with me when I brought it in and when I picked it up. He also took extra time to show me features about the machine and to make sure I knew the correct way to oil and clean the machine. He also spent time showing me other features. My machine is working beautifully now! I have four Bernina machines and will now always bring them to Lew for any maintenance and repairs. Thank you, Lew! read more

I "won" a cute barrel swivel chair at auction. It was online so imagine my disappointment when in person it was dirty and dingy. I didn't pay much for it so I was pleased with its solid construction and thought it was worth reupholstery. I used the Yelp quote feature and had 4 solid quotes in less than 48 hours - amazing. I chose G Street because of their excellent reviews, convenient location, weekend open hours, extensive fabric selection and pricing. While they weren't the very lowest price, they were extremely competitive. The best part of the entire process was working with the owner, Michael, and his stellar teammate, Desiree. Both were knowledgeable, responsive and professional. Desiree was so patient with me! She had great ideas that helped me end up with a gorgeous chair that I truly love. I reached out to G Street via Yelp and then via text communication in early Jan 2021 to create a cushion with a removable cover (washable) for a new bench seat we built in our kitchen. Their communication was amazing from the start and I very much appreciated that. The price felt high, but as I got multiple quotes from other upholsterers I realized the cost for a oversized, customized cushion was just more than I had anticipated. Moreover, their estimate was actually one of the lower quotes and included the foam and fabric. There was an additional cost that they strongly recommended for someone to come out and create a template pattern. At first I felt it was unnecessary since we had taken measurements ourselves, but in the end it felt prudent since they would guarantee the fit that way. But it took almost 10 days for the gentlemen to come out and create the template. We took advantage of the opportunity to go into the store in Rockville to choose our fabric. And I really love the wide selection and the fact that it was a family owned business with long time employees. Desiree, the woman who helped us select the fabric, was wonderful! Kind, courteous and very helpful. After we selected the fabric, we had to wait for the right size foam to arrive given how large the cushion was that we needed. That was probably another two weeks. I need to be honest that the time between my initial contact with them in early Jan 2021 and when we received the cushion, mid-March 2021 (almost 10 weeks) felt very long. However, we were thrilled when the cushion finally arrived! The quality of the craftsmanship, especially the piping, was incredible. It felt comfortable and it looked amazing! Plus it fit perfectly! All in all, I am very happy with G Street Fabrics, but ordering for them will require a lot of patience in terms of the turnaround time. read more

Very up and down with this place. I came in with no prior knowledge of dress making, in hopes of making my first dress. Right off the bat, I couldn't really tell who was staff and who was a shopper. It seemed as though everyone was so involved in their own thing and no one really approached me to help. When I did find someone who was staff, it was only after picking out a beautiful "save the bees" fabric which, after being told about the square lines, I felt scrutinized for being unprepared. My biggest grievance is with the same staff member that I managed to ask for help. For posterity sake, I do not want to list exactly what they were working at in case it is their only position, and I'd rather these comments be taken at face value for the business. Word to the wise, my fellow "Heat from Fire" friends. There was serious judgment from one of the employees when they found out the dress I was making was for me. The response I received when they asked "and who are you making this dress for?", went a little something along the lines of "Really? You're kidding me. Really?". Wether this was a stab at my figure, or if they could somehow smell the fumes of transgirl wafting off of me, this kind of response from an employee is completely inappropriate. I sure hope this is not my experience from this place again, cause it's a real shame it had to go this way. Great product, not so great staff. So if you're well adjusted to the craft already, and you can stomach the agonizing pain of an employee being transphobic or bodyshaming, it's a fantastic place to get wonderful fabric. Just don't go in if you're expecting to have your hand held or want to stay hidden. Looks like I'm going to Jo-ann's from now on. read more

UPDATE: I received my cushion. It took the valuable time of the owner to follow-up with the employees in charge of this assignment to get an update and the cushion delivered after two months. This shouldn't have been the norm for cases like mine. As a token of appreciation, they delivered it to my home. ------------- I ordered a custom cushion. Seller kept adding to the price because he miscalculated the materials I needed. It took them more than 2 weeks to come and take measures (which I knew in advance), but it has taken them almost two months to give me a damn date for delivery. They were quick to take my money for full payment though. Their order system is archaic and customer service is the worst I have ever seen. Quality of work yet to be seen. read more

Zippers - please don't go anywhere else for zippers. This place has the most reasonable priced zippers and elastic ever. Made me realize how I've been over paying at other places. I highly recommend. I have a very old, work horse Bernina sewing machine. Have been using it (a lot) lately as a volunteer making masks for MOCO Fire Dept. was having trouble with the stitching tension. I emailed G Street to inquire if there was any option to get service during this Covid Crisis. I got a prompt reply "Our service tech is out right now, but will have him get in touch with you". I got a call from Lew the next day! Using FaceTime he patiently walked me thru taking the bobbin section apart and making adjustments. Also, gave me tips about caring for the machine. He was SO nice and helpful. Once life gets back on track I will bring my machine to G Street so Lew can do a full routine service. My sales associate did a great job of organizing the work order: describing the multi-fabric transitions, edging, support repair, cushion firmness, pricing/ discounts, and pick-up/ delivery while I was at home. After 25 years, I returned to the behemoth, magical G Street fabric. I was disappointed but they are still in business which can't be said of many independent fabric stores. They still have a lot of tone on tone cottons and a few precuts for quilters. They had a small selection of pretty novelty cotton prints. They had an amazing section of buttons. 20 years ago I took some classes for sewing here, and purchased most of my project material here. I moved away, and here I am driving 40 minutes back to the store (now at a different location), and taking some more classes, and getting familiar with their products. I decided to make a purchase of new machine and a serger, and their Bernina brand has so many options. I worked with the sewing machine consultant, Ms. M, to make my purchases, and I've had a better experience here than at any other store that I had considered. I ended up making 2 Bernette purchases at fantastic prices (summer promo). I am really grateful for the exceptional support of the sewing machine consultant. She provided a ton of detail on a sewing machine that I wanted to purchase, but wasn't in stock. It made me very comfortable and ready to purchase it after our discussion and looking at similar models on the show floor. For the other serger machine that I did purchase, and was in stock, I really appreciate that she took the time to demo on my new machine, let me thread it, and just show me a few stitches. Since I have never bought a serger, I was a little doubtful about just trying to read and understand all of the functions. She made me feel much less overwhelmed about getting to know the machine. I am so excited to get rolling with my new machines. Kudos to Ms. M. for all of her help and advice, and it's good to know that I can just go back in and ask a 'how-to' question at any time. I bought some ribbons and after the woman at the front rung me up, she asked me to put back all of the spools. If she was busy, I'd understand but she was just standing there watching me. Pulling up to this store made me smile because my previous favorite fabric store was also housed in a warehouse. I'm new to fabrics so this is the biggest selection of apparel fabrics I've ever seen. I'm not to the level of making a wool coat and silk dress yet, but now I have a place to get the materials for when I'm ready! There's a room with just literal piles of remnants which is actually fun for weird crafty nerds.
