Review is just for buttons, I needed buttons for a hand knit and made the mistake of going to Joann's first... now I know better. They have a huge selection of buttons from basic to very fancy and in large quantities of each. I didn't look through the fabrics as I haven't been sewing much lately but they seem to have a ton. I will definitely come here first next time I need buttons. And I will bring cash - minimum card charge is $10. I should bring the garments as well, since they keep the buttons behind the counter and I have old lady eyes so it was a little tricky to explain what I wanted from a bit of a distance but I did manage. read more

This store was highly recommended to me by a tailor. I didn't even know it was here. On a Friday afternoon around 4:30, the area was very congested so keep that in mind if you're in a hurry. There is a big lot with plenty of parking spots available so no need to worry about parking here. From the signage on their door, they're not open on Sundays. I received great service! I was immediately greeted and directed to a very nice lady in the back who helped me get what I needed - additional material to complete a dress I'm having custom made. Specifically, four yards of bridal satin, which cost $8.99 per yard. She helped me find the exact color and was just a pleasure to talk to. Told me she loves her job and has worked there 7 years. Skip JoAnn's and make your way to Sarah's (if you can, come from University Blvd, AVOID New Hampshire Ave there is A LOT of construction at the intersection at New Hampshire). This is a LOCALLY OWNED business and truly is a gem! While the store is small and crowded with inventory, if they don't have it, you don't need it! Very helpful and kind customer service, they are eager to assist and will re-order stock for you (took a week for a full bolt which was a fabric that even G Street didn't have). Prices are way less than G Street without compromising quality. Best kept secret that I hope that you'll give a try. Not a looker but TOTALLY worth the trip! read more

My tailor recommended this place to me after i searched all over the DMV for fabric to match my African attire for my traditional engagement ceremony. unbeknownst to me, there are quite a few fabric stores in the area but I found Sarah's to have the best selection. The store is located in Langley Park adjacent to the Capital One. Their prices (while not amazon prices) are competitive. The sell all of your fabric needs but offer better quality and selection than JoAnn's or other larger fabric stores in the ares. I needed trim, zipper, sequin patches, the works! and Sarah delivered. Service was as good as expected I supposed, not terrible. More importantly, I found ALL the materials I needed in one spot. I have mixed feelings about my experience in the store. So here's my pros and cons. pros: There are so many nice fabrics there! I've never seen any like the one I found there! cons: the place was very cluttered and made me feel like I was in the maze runner. The service was... decent to say the least. I absolutely LOVE this place. I've found fabrics in here that I've only seen in NYC before, either at or below Garment District prices (which are usually pretty good). I once found embellished lace in here for a fraction of the price it was going for at another local retailer (too bad I'd already bought it from the other folks, but I'm digressing). The store resembles some of the stores in the NY fashion district and has a lot of options when it comes to fabric and notions. My daughter needed over 10 yards of material in a particular color so of course we found it however their pricing was not very budget friendly. We are used to getting breaks for large quantities but they didn't bend very much and many things aren't marked so it feels like a hustle. Stay AWAY from this place if you require any help! Customer Service was terrible--all they wanted to do was sit down, talk to each other and sip Starbucks! I walked in and asked a male did he work there. He said yes and I asked him a question and he referred me to the "Ladies in the back". Two females behind he counter near the men's suiting material. One was drinking Starbucks and the other eating. The heavy set woman was irritated that I was asking for assistance, the second lady was answering my questions but the heavy set woman was talking in spanish and I got the impression she was trying to deter the second lady from leaving their area to physically help me. The second lady finally got up and helped me but it was helpful because we could not understand each other. As far as the materials, I didnt find the place to be organized and the fabrics were poorly marked and marked improperly. I looooove this store. Go there ready to spend a lot of time digging. It's s tiny space with tons of fabric and notions. The owners are really sweet, attentive people. This place is like a used bookstore -- piled high with merchandise, stuff stacked up to the ceiling, fun to browse but difficult to find anything specific. If you enjoy browsing and discovering hidden treasures, you'll like this place. If you're in a hurry or need a particular item, it's not for you. With lots of local fabric stores in the area, Sarah's Fabric is my favorite: family-owned, with great prices and a wonderful selection of sewing notions. The fabric stock is extensive and somewhat intimidating: the majority of the store consists of seemingly unorganized upright bolts of fabric that leave little space for a winding footpath. If you aren't sure if they stock what you're looking for, just ask: staff can be helpful if a bit brusk (they're always busy with an ongoing flow of customers in a small space). The fabric stock is more on the synthetics side and you won't find the same sort of organization and brands you would find at a JoAnn or Hancocks, but there are a lot of very original and unique options. The selection of notions is extensive, with lots of ribbon, trim, and related accessories in unique styles that you won't find elsewhere. Behind the counter they've got a trove of sewing machine accessories and high-quality tools (a seam ripper from Japan, for example, that is so much better than anything else I've ever used), so again: just ask for help if you don't see what you need. The prices are better than a Joann or Hancock, even with those stores' coupons and sales, and it feels great to support a local, family owned business where they recognize me and are friendly to my kids. read more

Decent place lots of fabrics, unique zippers. In my opinion its good for "basics" no real specialty fabrics. I went there to save a few dollars on linings, and thats what I did I saved a few dollars but the lining was low quality and did not come out as I expected. I made my first trek out to Sarah today. We don't have any stores like this in the northern Virginia area for some confounded reason, Maryland gets all the good places! All the ladies and the gentleman that waited on me were very polite and all asked if I needed anything. It was very easy to get material cut, there was no line (unlike any JoAnn's you ever set foot in.) I agree with other shoppers: prices are unclear, but most are pretty reasonable. I thought some of the cheap looking vinyls were overpriced at $19 a yard, but I didn't see anything else like that. There's some nice stuff there, but you need to know what you want otherwise I think it's really overwhelming. I loved my visit and will be back. They've got all sorts of things: faux poly dupioni, stretch taffeta, actual dupioni, ponte, jacquard, a little bit of corduroy, some spacer fabric, polyester, a little bit of denim, gabardine, upholstery vinyls, dancewear/spandex/lames, lace, fleece...you name it, it is probably there. The only thing I did not really find was microsuede, even in their upholstery section. They do have some lovely black stretch vinyls though, which can be pretty hard to find elsewhere (for apparel, not upholstery) hidden away with their vinyl. My only wish is that the store was bigger so they could properly display all their bolts. There are literally sections of the store that you cannot access where there's fabric, which is a shame. If you're into fabrics, it is really fun to just look around! I wish it was closer, I'd go all the time! I'm a longtime G Street customer and while I still love G Street it is nice to have another place to check out when I make that long visit to MD. read more

bought some specific items I needed for a coupla sewing projects and got almost everything I needed (spools, thread, liner, fabric, tape measure, elastic). There is even more rolls of fabric here than last time I visited and it seems they've increased the range of stock items (buttons, zippers, lace, trimmings, sewing tools). I intended to spend $200 and struggled for about an hour to see appliques, rhinestones etc. Everything was under survelliance and impossible to see, no patience with helping , just plain rude. Explained I made Bridal accessories so needed a little time to think.' I had a length of ribbon, about a $1 worth as I continued to look and struggled to get any response. I am a white well dressed lady, not aggressive or pushy. After constant sighs and general rudeness I told them I give up and walked out. I worked 15 years high end retail Saks 5th and Nordstroms so expect decent service. Crazy middle aged lady chased me into Star Bucks nextdoor where she screamed at me and carried on that she would call the police etc. Creating a scene..I Said for what, for giving poor service. I decided not to engage any more as can buy on line , half the price , no tax and no hassel. i came to this boutique and it was so many different nice fabrics. soon as i entered i stood around to look they asked me if i needed help i told them i was looking for gold glitter fabric they told me to go to the back. as i got to the back i could hear a customer and the people at the register saying "she doesn't know what she's looking for, how do you say only gold, you don't know" so as i got my fabric i came to the register and told them i heard them talking about me and they should not be talking about their customers like that. they are very unprofessional and rude. the fabric is affordable but they talk bad about their customers and their rude! read more

Couldn't agree more with Marilyn R. The store is ran by an older gentleman and his son. The workers/Son are very helpful. The father/older guy however doesn't understand customer service in its simplest form. He made an error on 4 buttons that were .90 cents each. When I corrected him, he was very upset and blamed me and said I wasn't specific. When the instructions that his son wrote on the paper was right there in front of both of us bold and clear. He told me that my business wasn't appreciated and that I shouldn't come back. in those exact words. I said ok, paid for my buttons AND the four that he messed up on and left. I will GLADLY continue to shop online without having to deal with that. Plain and simple, I DO NOT recommend this place. read more
