I am writing today to give Marivel Vargas - Patient Advocacy Rep. a 5 star rating. She has been incredibly helpful, kind and professional. To make a long story short - I was in Cardiac ICU in the summer of 2021. I started out at St. David's South Austin, and then was transferred to Ascension Seton Main. I was in the hospital from June 19th (Father's Day -0 until July 5th). I was being financially responsible. I had a health insurance policy with US Health / Freedom Life that was over $800 / month (not affordable!) However, once admitted with a life-threatening diagnosis of Chronic Systolic Heart Failure, I learned that my insurance was basically worthless. Capitol Anesthesiology has been the most responsive and easiest to work with of all my creditors. I wish more of them had reps like Marivel. Thank you so much! Pam :-) read more

These people are in this for one thing and it's not patient care. Before our child's emergency surgery they demaned we pay our entire copay upfront before agreeing to provide service. Never ever had that happen in all our years of having this insurance (it's blue cross blue shield! Not Obamacare or Medicare). We did. Then they billed us the excess. Within 30 days after we had mailed partial payment they already sent us a threatening collection letter and called us. It hasn't even been 30 days yet! These people are awful. I can't say enough bad things about their lack of courtesy and humane treatment. Do not use them if you have a choice. You may find yourself with a black mark on your credit while you are still in the hospital recuperating! read more

So far all I have had to deal with was their rude demanding phone calls. Rattling off some insurance numbers that even a mathematician can understand to the. Tell me I owed over 600$ could be less could be more depends on how long I am under. Then proceeded to tell me she needed payment right then and there. Well I was no where near my wallet so she then goes "well you need to call me back in and hour or tomorrow!" After telling her that I would much rather prefer a mailed bill (like every other medical company has done with this injury) she said "well that's not how we do it!" She said she'd send me an email and for me to email her my cc info, but sorry I'm not just handing over all my banking info. Fast forward to my pre-op with seton the next day, I mention this whole thing to them and they say "yeah, we get complaints about them all the time! Come in on your day of surgery and every thing will be fine!" I get one more nagging call from in which I tell the girl the same thing!!!!! She marks it in my "file" then tells me she'll send me their website. Well all I got was an email to let me know when I was online even though she said she was going to send me their website. Which was never sent! This business has to understand that this is a very stressful time, we're are getting bills in the mail left and right. Then to blast us on the phone and rudely demand payment isn't going to get them very far! I 100% am going to pay them for their services, after their services have been performed! Change your methods, maybe sending a bill and not a demanding phone call and you'll probably have many more happier customers! read more

I just had Orthopaedic surgery on 9:28/21 and Dr White was the anesthesiologist that I dealt with at Seton Northwest . I was impressed with him when he said he was doing a nerve block on my left foot . Well he painfully put it in and I went through surgery and came out in pain . I was told that the nerve block would last for 72 hours reducing my need for opiates or at least so many . Well, it didn't work . So I go through surgery and am in recovery only to be told by Dr White that he needs to place another nerve block in my left thigh. I am a bariatric patient and have lost a lot Of weight therefore have a lot of loose skin . He put me through pain as he was trying to place it and two other anesthesiologists stood around me watching as he tried to place it . Finally he got it because the nerves were jerking in my leg . I asked him if the size of my leg mattered . I was laying on my side so my loose skin would have been not a factor but he made an ugly comment that REALLY upset me and made me cry hard when he said yes larger legs are a major factor in placing them . He just said it so ugly it broke my heart . I have lost 253 lbs . For someone to say that when I was less than an hour out of surgery and in extreme pain just set me over the ledge of being majorly upset. When my husband came in the recovery room he found out what had happened and was upset too. Nobody just out of surgery should be have made so upset from the anesthesiologist Dr White , to push me to that point . Later while I was in recovery my surgeon came in and did a nerve block in my ankle . It was originally planned that I was suppose to stay overnight but due to the remarks of Dr White, I just wanted to go home! In recovery an older gentleman I don't remember his name came in and tried to tell me I didn't understand or hear correctly what Dr White had said???? I just told him to leave my room and he just kept on defending him??? Finally After telling him MULTIPLE times to leave he did . This was a very traumatic experience. One thing I can compliment is every morning a woman from capital anesthesiology called me to check on me until I pulled out the IV Thursday . read more

Horrible billing practices. Aetna, my ins, had sent them pymts electronically, but my bill was never adjusted. Lazy billing personnel just want full pymt, regardless of what was actually paid to them. They were supposed to delay bill due date. Never did and didn't do what Aetna told them to. Horrible patience care. Dr. Epstein didn't listen to me when I told him day of my procedure that anesthesia blocks my bowels. He didn't listen. I had more problems post-op & a nasty bill that followed. A woman from the billing dept called me, but failed to tell me the nature of the call. Odd & unprofessional. I had to keep calling Aetna is see what on earth is going on with this heinous bill. read more

Good doctors, horrible customer service and terrible (and unethical) billing practices. I am in the medical field, and I can promise you that billing $3,000 for the 15 minutes of the doctor's time to administer the epidural is not 'reasonable and customary.' Instead of accepting the industry standard rate of $651 as stated by my insurance (Aetna) for this service, this company refused to do so and left ME with a balance of $2,300. The rep I spoke to there just kept repeating the same thing over, and over, and over again "we don't have a contract with them, so we can bill you whatever rate we want." I get it, you said it TEN TIMES. That doesn't mean you SHOULD be charging people this ridiculous and arbitrary amount because we don't have a choice in who we get since they are an ancillary provider (the only one). AVOID AT ALL COST!!! (Unfortunately this is who Seton uses as their only provider so you're SOL if you go there.) read more

I echo the surprise at the negative reviews. My son had major orthopedic surgery last year. Capital Anesthesia bent over backwards to work with me on finances. They called daily to check on my son following the procedure. Navigating what needs to be done and who needs to get paid for surgery can be super stressful...these folks made it as smooth as possible. I don't understand why people react so to collection efforts from healthcare providers. I wonder...do they stand in the grocery line and scream about having to pay for their groceries? And the nerve of our supermarkets to ask for the money before we've even had a chance to eat the food! ;) Capital Anesthesiology Association gave my son the best of care and conducted their business with professionalism and integrity! read more

** The medical staff is great** However, the very unprofessional and rude people who work in the billing office will cause me to never use this company again. Last year while recovering from a massive hemorrhagic stroke, I required two brain surgeries. Both times, around lunchtime on the day prior to my scheduled surgeries their billing office called at the last minute demanding a large upfront payment. At that time I was out of work and was struggling to keep my cash flow positive. The people I dealt with felt more like a collection agency in a medical facility. Rude, cold and callous is the way I was treated. I was able to find a room on credit cards to pay up front fees and have the surgeries as scheduled even though this caused me financial hardship. The part that really upset me is that they did not bother working things out with my insurance. My insurance covers anesthesiology 100%. So there is absolutely no reason for this company to call me demanding money which I did not owe them. My payments were eventually refunded but the damage has been done. I will refuse to ever use this provider again. read more

Wow - I am amazed at all these negative reviews. I had surgery last year at Seton and while Capitol Anesthesiology was not an in-network provider, the insurance company was contractually obligated to pay them as such because they are contracted with the hospital. This is not Capitol Anesthesias fault. Appeal with your insurance companies! I did my due diligence and called my insurance company ahead of time and made sure everyone/everything was covered. I never once received a bill from Capitol Anesthesiology. The Dr. I met at the hospital was warm and friendly and made me feel very comfortable -- before AND during the surgery. Wow, my experience is not consistent with the previous negative reviews at all. My plastic surgeon uses Capitol Anesthesiology and I had a wonderful experience. It was a planned procedure, scheduled months in advance with up front pricing. Billing was quick and convenient. I met Dr. Knauth the day of the procedure and he was incredible. It was the day before a holiday and he didn't rush me or hurry to get out of there. He talked to me on my level and made sure I was completely comfortable both before and after the procedure. I don't know much about the practice as a whole, but I would definitely recommend Dr. Knauth. read more

Absolutely horrible billing experiences. I have a good private insurance but the whole payment experience was absolutely terrible. They bill your insurance, while insurance pay the negotiated rate for the services and this company charge you additional cost. when you explain to them, they threatening you to report your account for collection. Paid up front, they never showed up. Since we already scheduled time off and rides to and from surgery, my husband ended up having three sinus surgeries with only a local anesthetic and pain med. He was expecting general anesthesia and at the last minute was left with that option or starting all over. The doctor's office said to ask for our money back. We got no call from Capital Anesthesia to explain or apologize. When I called, I was told by a receptionist that it was due to a "scheduling conflict" with no other explanation or apology. They will screw you with money. They will charge you upfront and then send bills that reflect a different price. When I disputed it, they said our surgery went longer than they thought, which I was not even away from my little one that long so no way the "time" of the anesthesia was correct. read more

Update, Today I got Capitol Anesthesiology Paid in Full and hopefully I will never have to speak with their Billing Office ever again. Waiting even a short period of time (In this case a week) is grounds to be put on their S*** List. A few things to keep in mind if you deal with them- They record ALL conversations. Manipulation, deception and bullying are like breathing air to them They are predators and you are prey They don't feel empathy They don't experience guilt If it seems like they are being nice, there's a motivation behind it Treating their patients who owe them money like they are criminals is something they do routinely and has been going on for years. Inflexibility in payment arrangements makes it to where patients who would normally be able to pay something monthly, end up having to default entirely. Makes no sense. read more

I did initially get a surprising bill from Capitol Anesthesiology. I thought my insurance would have paid it completely (or at least 80%) since I had met my annual deductible. When I called the office "Ann" was super-friendly and explained very clearly what the issue was and how she was going to help me resolve it. She said she would quickly send me an email with detailed instructions. I did have to call my insurance and tell them I needed "balance billing" because my surgeon was in-network and I didn't have a choice on the anesthesiologist (apparently out-of-network). The call with Cigna went exactly as Ann had described to me. Ann just called to personally tell me that Cigna had paid the balance (I had just gotten an update from Cigna so I already knew that). BEWARE! Do not use Capitol Anesthesiology if you can avoid it. They will send you endless bills months after your date of surgery for payment of additional services that you thought you had already paid for in the first bill you received. They will use excuses for their untimely billing of these services such as "we submitted each service separately to your insurance company" or "your insurance company has not responded to each request in a timely manner". You are 1 patient. You had 1 surgery. You have a right to 1 bill. Avoid Capital Anesthesiology at all costs or the cost will be yours. read more

After my sons surgery in the Spring I finally received a statement. I called and asked if I could make payment arrangements. I was told because of the balance I would have to pay $35.00 for it to be paid off in 4 months. I told her that I had 6 other people I was trying to pay that were telling me the same thing. She told me that my $10.00 payments were not enough. I was so upset! I told her that I would continue to make my payments per month and if they choose to turn my account over to collections then I will continue to pay the collection agency $10 a month as well. She laughed and said she would note my account! The way that they do business is ridiculous!!!! read more

I received a bill dated 07/24/14 in the mail on 07/30/14. Due date was 08/14/14. When I had not received a statement from my insurer a week later I called my insurer and asked that they send me a statement. On 08/28/14, Claudia from Capitol Anesthesiology called to warn me that they were sending a past due notice. I told her that I would call my insurance company and ask them if I owed the billing balance because I had not received a statement. This woman has NO customer service skills. She was rude to me on the phone. As I have worked in customer service for over 40 years, I am always courteous when dealing with such matters. I took time out from my job to stay on hold for half an hour so that I could find out from my insurer if I actually owed the amount, which I did, and then I paid my bill online. If I ever need anesthesiology services in the future, I WILL NOT use this company simply because of this rude employee. read more

I have needed their services multiple times and have always been 100% satisfied, they actually listen to you and do the type of sedation that you want, after they present all of the possible options with you. Dr Hull is a absolute SUPERSTAR. But the entire company is all wonderful. read more

Still giving them one star for the horrible billing experience. The Dr's, however, were great and I felt safe in their hands. Several of them stopped by pre-op to gather info and answer questions, and the one who was actually my anesthesiologist could not have been nicer. I felt much calmer after he came by. The billing people refunded the majority of what I pre-paid, but now I'm trying to sort the billing. I really wish they'd figure out what you owe before they start asking for prepayment. My other advice is that surgery is stressful, don't ruin your reputation for great care by putting total jerks on the phone to act like a collections agency. I'd recommend the Dr's, but not the practice as a whole. I completely understand they want to be paid, but how you treat people matters. read more

I fell down and went 'boom' my wrist had a boo-boo - lucky me the orthopedic center that did my sugery had an anesthesiologist from Capitol Anesthesiology Association. I told him how I feel sick to my stomach sometimes when I wake up from the anestetic and how some of the painkillers also make me nauseous - so he gave me a patch on my arm that took care of that problem and my whole experience was awesome! He was kind and made me feel well cared for. I never had any issues with billing - actually the opposite - their advice actually ended up saving me money! Yes the medical group is fantastic, and I've now l have just learned that they have a fantastic Billing Manager, Lupe. If you are having any billing issues that you feel are not getting resolved, make sure you obtain their name and ask for Lupe. She really cares about their reputation, both medical and billing wise, and is here to help. Lupe is very professional, and as a previous manager myself, I needed the help of my clients to make sure things run smoothly. She will take care of your billing needs (if you don't feel like you are receiving the help you need), and make you feel like you are in good hands. read more

You do get a statement a month, from any provider, until the bill is settled, but I second the avoid Capital Anesthesiology part. Unfortunately they are the sole anesthesiologists with atleast the Seton network in town, I don't know about St. David's network. I have one of the five new marketplace health plans. For major surgery, I pay a single low copay, which I already paid, for the surgery, the surgeon, the facility care, everything. I get a phone call from Capital Anesthesiologists informing me my plan isn't in network and I owe them $2000. I don't think so. I call the office manager, and tell her, first of all, how can you not be in network, with the main health plans Brackenridge's patients have, after five months. Surgery was after four and a half months. Second, I don't have $2000, and I'm not going to have $2000, and this bill (if htey didn't drop it at that point, which they didn't), is going right on my medical bankruptcy pile (avoidance of which is part of the point of having a marketplace plan), and, third, I'm complaining to the hospital administration that their anesthesiologists haven't deigned to get in plan with the hospitals' patients main plan. This office manager is arguing with me the whole time. She told me, "We have other patients in your situation, and they are all going to other cities to get care". !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It sounds like the administrative end of Capitol Anesthesiologists are unprofessional ditzes. I wasn't at all satisfied with my anesthesiological care, either. I had entire discussions with them before surgery about my care. I am very sensitive to many of that sort of drug. They agreed not to premedicate me, and they did anyway, and I was extremely overmedicated, resulting in being groggy and sick for nearly a day after surgery. When I had my appendix out, once I came out of anesthesia I was perfectly fine, so I didn't just have normal post-anesthesiology after effects. read more

I had a procedure done recently and Capital Anesthesiology handled all the paperwork with the insurance company leaving me to pay only my deductible which was billed by the insurance company, not Capital Anesthesiology . The office staff is awful. Rude, don't know what they are doing. The lady I spoke with didn't care that money was tight. She made it sound like if I didn't get on a payment plan with her, then I couldn't have my injections. Come to find out, I didn't even have an anesthesiologist for my procedure! They weren't even involved in any way! I was going to keep names out of it, but I won't. I spoke with Marilyn. Avoid her if you can. She is rude, and doesn't care. Dr. Amy was supportive, attentive and professional. However I would never recommend this group due to the incredibly rude and aggressive Laura in their office. I understand my insurance policy. I know my deductible and my balance and what it pays after I meet my deductible. I know how and when Cap Anesthesiologists will be paid. It's as if Laura assumed I would not pay. She called me two days in a row right before my surgery and berated me for paying Seton's charges first. Threatening me with a bill and collections, in our first two, pre-op conversations. They are not in my network but, rather, part of facility privilege. I would urge Seton to reconsider partnering with them. They certainly don't represent the image Seton is trying hard to cultivate. read more

Hi, I have not had my MRI done yet at this place. It is tomorrow and they did not ask for money until a day before (as it happened with few other people in the reviews). I had a conversation with Esmeralda who is senior financial counselor. She is one of the person who has the most knowledge on how the insurance coverage actually works and he made it look like piece of cake to understand. She explained me all the charges for anesthesia PLUS radiologist and hospital and told me what is the max i will end up paying. She actually went way far from this and offered me help to understand some of my other bills from some other hospitals/doctor's office. Which is like really good. Who does that. Anyways, my experience so far has been really good. Very polite and helpful. read more

I had so much anxiety about having to go "under", but the staff at Capitol Anesthesiology put me right at ease! Dr. Kohls was polite and very comforting. She explained every detail about anesthesia down to the name of the drug. She gave me a general idea about what would be happening before, during, and after my procedure in regards to the anesthesia. As previously poster- I am not sure why all the billing negative reviews. Maybe they hired someone new, because my experience was completely opposite. I had insurance issues from the get go (surprise)... they were claiming to not pay for my services etc. When I first started contacting CAA re: the confusion, Cheryl B (I unfortunately don't know her last name) took the time to explain insurance codes, etc and what/why my insurance was claiming not to pay. She was patient, kind, and even gracious enough to get on a 3 way call with me and my insurance to do the appeal with my insurance. She comforted me several times saying not to worry she would help me get it all straightened out. She followed up frequently with me to let me know the status of my claim payments, etc; and froze my account during appeals so I wouldn't get dinged for not paying the (wrong) amount my insurance was sticking me with. After the 1st appeal was taken care of, I unfortunately had a second surgery immediately after, where the exact same thing happened- my insurance denying to pay, etc. AGAIN, Cheryl walked me through the process through the end. It has now completely been resolved and only because she helped guide me (and my insurance...) on what to do to properly process the claim. She went above and beyond for me and I am truly thankful. Not many offices have an employee that will do that! I also have always had AWESOME experiences with the Anesthesiologists and the Nurse anesthetists at CAA. I have had 2 surgeries in the past 4 months, and my son had one as well. They were always pleasant, always thorough and always awesome. I had an excellent experience with Esmeralda from the billing department. I had emergency surgery in February and first received a bill that was clear and concise and matched my insurance company's "Explanation of Benefits". I always wait until my insurance company pays their part before I pay anything. When it came time for me to pay my portion I spoke with Esmeralda and she was helpful and professional. I am having another surgery in a few days and Esmeralda called my insurance company to get "pre-approved". There was an issue with my insurance premium and she called to alert me. All is taken care of now, but had she not called to tell me, my payment would have been much greater. This is not a task that she had to do, but I believe she cares for the patients. Esmeralda is clearly looking out for the patients as well as the practice which translates into excellent customer service. Esmeralda was very professional and helpful. She treated me with respect, compassion and remained professional through every one of our conversations. read more

I am just appalled by the lack of humanity in the medical field these days. I was scheduled to have a surgery on a seriously broken ankle. I wasn't even in the hospital yet before they called me and demanded full payment for the process, including a epidural, I would never need a epidural for a ankle surgery. I had already reached my co payment and was only liable for 30 % of the cost. She became very rude and upset with me. I left them with 30%. I went into my surgery awake. They gave me a shot in my nerve to deaden the entire leg. I was under the assumption all was done with. Two weeks later I received a billed for three times the amount originally quoted. Without a epidural, instead they billed me for two xrays and two injections to deaden my leg. I only received one and the X-ray wasn't a X-ray, it was a sonogram to find the injection spot. I called to dispute the claim and the billing personnel were very rude and even called me a liar at one point and hung up on me. I have written a dispute letter and heard nothing but my account was sent to collections directly after I called to dispute. Just sickening. Dr was polite and the surgery went well, but the after effects of how I was treated was just crap! read more

We made sure Doctor was in our network and the hospital that was used. Unfortunately, the anesthesiolgist who was assigned to us was not and we are being billed out of network. Aetna paid $330 of the claim and we are being billed $820.00. Why doesn't the anesthesiologist have to disclose prior to the surgery that he is not in our network. We had no idea nor did we have a say in who was being used. read more

I had nothing but the best from my dr. And CRNA. I remember the Drs name was David but the CRNA I cannot remember her name and it pains me because she was great. I had my surgery today 7-25 at Seton NW with Dr. Ofarrell. The only offputting part was being asked to pay before I had the surgery, but a very minor part in that and not enough to not give 5 stars after my experience today. They treated me great and I couldnt be happier. Thank you!!! read more

READ THIS BEFORE PAYING ANYTHING OR GOING TO THE PROCEDURE. The two stars is based on the fact that the anesthesiologists are great - the medical side does great and friendly care. The billing department is TERRIBLE! They either work on commission or are pushed to squeeze all they can out of you, and then delay things hoping you will go away. Medical billing is a problem in this country- many people are trying to get out of paying and expect free care - if you are one of those, quit reading and grow up. For those of us who intend to pay our bills, and actually want to, this can be a frustrating experience. As seen in reviews, some of them had the billers "work" with them - possibly because they knew they couldn't get any more out of the patient or the insurance paid enough. You need to understand how this works. First, unless you know you have zero insurance, then DO NOT PAY when they call you the afternoon before your procedure that has been scheduled for 6 weeks and demand payment, offering a 25% discount if you pay now. Again, if you have zero insurance, that is fine. If you do, DONT PAY ANYTHING UPFRONT! The insurance will have the bill decreased beyond 25%. I went ahead and paid, and guess what, the insurance adjusted the bill to 1/4 of the cost after i had already paid (That adjustment is based on what is customary for insurances to pay). SO, i ended up paying 3-4 times the amount i would've owed had i waited until after the procedure and insurance adjusted it, and capitol has no desire to refund that amount. Plus, the procedures estimated cost was actually less than estimated from the beginning. Furthermore, they will try to BALANCE BILL you sometimes - that means when your insurance adjusts the rate to customary charges and pays say 500, and they initially charged 2000, they may come after you for the 1500. you need to DISCUSS ALL OF THIS WITH them before the procedure and get it in writing. Again, the doctors are fantastic, but medical billing at this point in our country is ugly - some of us are paying for those who weasel out of the bill. Bottom line : DON"T PAY BEFORE, discuss all of these things, and let the insurance adjust/talk to capitol anesthesia before you do anything. Don't give in to the pressure. We want to pay what is fair, and what everyone is getting charged by their insurance. Thats all i'm after - just not getting gouged. I want the docs/staff to get paid appropriately, and am all for that. They work hard, went to school for a long time, and your life is on the line, so they deserve to get paid well, but i don't want to be ripped off. Had they handled it more kindly, and at least given me some of what i paid back, i wouldn't be writing this review. Unfortunately most patients don't try to figure all of this out before and can end up burned in the end. read more

Making my last payment to Capital Anesthesiology today, and it can't come soon enough. I was VERY clear with CA before my surgery, in informing them that i would have to make monthly payments. And i was told this would be just fine. 1 week after my surgery the calls already started coming in from CA. And they quickly turned threatening. Maintaining my good credit is very important to me and CA used this against me by threatening to turn over my account to collections is not paid in full. I have paid off my account early, but through great sacrifice and working extra. My doctor's office and the hospital have kept their word and i have been making payments to them both every month, without issue. i will NEVER EVER use CA again, EVER!!! read more

The CAA anesthesia doctors were excellent in discussing options with me before knee replacement surgery as well as post-op. Because they were out-of-network for my insurance, Esmeralda V. in the billing department helped me work through a needed appeal process with the insurance company.
