    VIP Tires & Service

    VIP Tires & Service

I had a pleasantly surprising experience earlier this month at the VIP Tires & Service in Augusta…read more I took our 2010 Mazda Tribute in for brake work because the pedal was behaving oddly after a hard stop (when a pedestrian jumped off the curb in front of me). VIP's diagnosis was that the master cylinder and power booster were defunct and needed replacement. These repairs were made and I retrieved the car. It was a hefty bill but par for the course. Keeping an otherwise good older car on the road is a lot less expensive than replacing it. Shortly afterwards, I noticed the brakes were still acting the same as before--soft pedal, longer push. I took the car back to VIP for further diagnosis. The surprise was when the service rep informed me what they had found: The antilock braking system (ABS) had failed and needed replacement. What made the surprise pleasant was that, because they'd missed this fault in their original diagnosis, VIP was going to obtain and install the new ABS unit free of charge--saving me a couple of grand for part and labor. Wow. I call that owning your profession. Fair is fair, and I will continue bringing our vehicles to VIP when they need service.

I gave them the OK and then he added that the car had oil and transmission fluid leaks to be aware of. PIcked the car up when done and drove 4 miles down the road when steam and smoke bellowed from the hood. The radiator hose was blown. Had it towed back to VIP and next day they said engine was fried. Brad claimed he had warned me of radiator leak, which he never mentioned, and would make no sense to spend nearly $500 on other repairs and ignore a radiator leak. Called corporate office to complain and they said they would get back to me.. Never heard from them and now I have no car.

DEFIANTLY COVID NON-COMPLIANT and servicing rip-off. Despite Meineke's statement about being COVID…read morecompliant, this establishment is not. Perhaps they are now but they weren't yesterday 12/16/20. When booking I was quoted that an oil and filter change was $69.95, discounted $15 with the coupon I had. At the appointment, I first presented the coupon and mentioned the discount to the clerk, Rod, but he did not reach for the coupon or make any clarification that I needed to hand it to him in any particular way. He definitely heard me, so I took his response as meaning it was understood and that he knew what I expected of him. I was told to return in an hour. Upon my return, I handed Rod an unused paper mask and asked whether, as a personal favor to me during the transaction, he would wear it. Again refused to wear a mask and then went further mouthing off about Governor Mill's mask order, his "rights" not to wear a mask, and other unrelated political observations about COVID. This despite the rampant COVID outbreak in Kennebec County at the moment. As far as I could gather, Rod decided that despite his working before the public in a small office during the worst public health crisis in 100 years, his preference to not wear a mask outweighed those of the public and Meineke's customers in particular. I was appalled. When I presented my coupon, again asking about the $15 discount, Rod then stated that I was too late, alleging that I was, apparently, supposed to force it on him, not just show it to him and mention it. I reminded him that I had shown it to him and mentioned it but that he refused to take it. What a customer service champ. Examining the bill, amounting to an astounding $99.67, I found charges for labor, filter, oil disposal, and a charge for two additional quarts of oil for $13.98. Five quarts are included in the $69.95 quote. My car takes 6.3 quarts. Whatever. The subtotal was $95.44 + $4.23 tax = $99.67... plus a $3.93 fine print charge for using a credit card bringing the total to a whopping $103.60 for an oil change. Bait and switch, hidden charges, uncooperative staff, defiance of public health orders, overcharges, surly Rod, all needlessly complicating a simple oil change in Meineke's favor. Meineke: German for don't go there.

We called multiple times, no response, so we made an appointment online and was rejected at the counter because their online services aren't working, alignment equipment not working, and computer not working so cash only. Why was the customer in front of me accepted for a walk in for something more labor intensive when all I needed were my tires changed? I had to schedule an appointment over 10 days out now and when leaving an employee put a cigarette in his mouth at the front desk and walked out, three staff were outside goofing off lifting wheel parts and three staff on assuming a break when a dozen customers are waiting seemed like a serious lack of professionalism. The manager wouldn't even come and give me an explanation to the mishap. The woman at the counter went to ask the manager what to do and blamed me for not calling and they had several appointments for the same time. It is not my fault their systems aren't working and I was rejected to leave my car to be worked on at their convenience. Permanently taking my money and business elsewhere this was the worst service and experience despite constant effort as a customer.
