Avoid at all costs! I had been a patient for many years, but the dentist I was seeing retired and sold his practice to this horrible company. They assured me, and confirmed on their end that they took my dental insurance. Had my cleaning and a month later I get a call 'Oh, we don't really your insurance and you owe us now'. Naturally I request an invoice to review the charges, because at the time of my appointment I saw nothing regarding billing and was told I owed nothing. Never received a bill in email or letter form. FIFTEEN MONTHS LATER they start texting me (which I never consented to, good job breaking federal telecommunications law!) About my overdue balance. Trying to send me to collections because they never sent me the bill or reached out. Now their billing agent is claiming it's my fault because I didn't request a bill from them. Also - beware of the flouride service. My insurance covers it, but I didn't request it nor authorize. And of course now they're trying to charge full uninsured rates for a service I didn't give consent to. read more

They miscalculated what my dental insurance would cover and signed me up for non-urgent procedures that could have waited a year in which my insurance would have reset and covered it. Furthermore, they insisted on overcharging me for procedures beyond the prior agreed upon price they showed me on paper. Trina, my hygienist, was personable, professional and very gently with my sensitive gums. She cleaned me up great! Dr. Hanefield was also a very nice guy. He was easy to talk to and asked all the right questions. He examined me thoroughly and I felt well taken care of. Over a year or two later I want to add that this crown that was put on came off twice. First while on vacation and they said it looked fine underneath and put it back on. Unfortunately, the only positive thing I have to say about my experience is that the office appeared clean. In short, the office provided a shady insurance estimated , repeatedly lied to me about it, and the doctor refused to return my call for 6 days, causing me to have to cancel a root canal appointment. the office seemed to make up charges to pad the bill because it was dissatisfied with its contract with the insurance company, leaving the patient to foot the additional cost. My estimate included a line item with an insurance code for a crown and the proper billing through the insurance. Then there were two uncoded"lab fees". I pressed the office to provide codes for these fees but they kept giving circuitous explanations and could not give any code. It seems like the dentist accepts my insurance plan to get the patients and then conjures up charges that it will not bill (or even show) to insurance, leaving it to the patient to foot the bill. Basically my insurance did nothing for me because the dentist attempted to circumvent the insurance billing process. I spent a lot of time discussing the insurance and treatment with staff, and her explanation changed with each follow up call. When I asked for the dentist to call me, I was told he only returns calls one day per week and that I'd have to cancel my endodontist appointment since dr Snyder wouldn't call before then. Truly disappointing and leaving me without any trust in anyone in this office. read more

Let me preface this review by saying 1) I have been coming here for 10 years before Dr. Hanefield retired and 2) I have double dental insurance coverage which has helped cover the premium you pay for the location. This dental office has totally gone down hill! First, after being away for a year plus due to COVID I thought it was safe to go back as I assumed all hygentists were now vaccinated. I was informed by my hygentist that she was not due to a possible side effect. I was very uncomfortable. Additionally, after informing them I was moving out of the area in a month--rather than recommend the most critical dental work-- they pushed a menu of treatment and ensured me the work could be done it time. From there the nightmare ensued. Several office visits to prepare replacement crowns, more to repair temporaries that fell off, and a final awful experience in which the replacements from the lab didn't fit. This after they recommended deep cleaning and failed to share that my double coverage wouldn't take care of laser cleaning ($300 extra) and that the lab re-adjustment of the ill-fitting crown would not be back in time for my move! They also informed me the morning of the crown replacement that my regular dentist would be leaving the practice and threw in a new dentist who was nice but inexperienced and unable to resolve the issues. Through tears, I told them to glue back on the temporaries and now I am leaving back East with the need to find a new dentist who will have to start the work from scratch!!! I have been a patient here for about 2 years. (Transferred from a different practice on a few recommendations forDr. Lai) At first, everything was good. I needed a filling and Dr. Lai just went on maternity leave. I had 2 fillings done by some other doctor and follow ups with regular cleanings which were somewhat uncomfortable. March 2023, I went in for a cleaning and the doctor noticed the 2 fillings which were done in this office had small holes in each filling and they said they would replace them for free. So I scheduled that appt and then had my cleaning that day. That cleaning was honestly the worst I have ever had. The hygienist used the water flosser which was super loud and vibrated everything. She nicked so much of my gums that they bleed so much and were inflamed afterwards. She also left the suction thing in my mouth in the same spot which gave me bleeding sores on the inside of my bottom lip. I was not happy with her. I decided to come back to do the fillings since it was their mistake and dr.Lai wasn't the one I was scheduled with. So in April 2023 I had some other dr do the fillings and to this day in July 5 2023 I still have some filling residue on the sides of those teeth. I told her that I felt stuff on my teeth and she said see didn't see anything and didn't bother to fix it. I have a dentist friend who gave me a tooth buffer strip that I even tried to use myself to remove the build up on those teeth and I for about half off. So overall my experience with this office had been pretty bad. I have no doubts Dr.Lai is great, but I never got to experience her other than her initial check. read more

Everyone hates going to the dentist, and I'm at the top of this list. Dr. Hanefield and his staff go out of their way to make even the most rabid anti-dentite feel welcome and at ease. Free nitrous for those who white-knuckle every procedure (yup, that's me). Very thorough oral exam, including checking gums, tongue and entire oral cavity for lesions, and checking lymph nodes under jaw and in neck. (for someone who's worked in health care for 20 years, this impressed the heck out of me) Painless cleaning (with the use of a topical anesthetic) was done and very well explained during the procedure. Danielle at the front desk went over my treatment plan, scheduled follow up appointments and carefully explained my insurance benefits and out of pocket costs. I'm almost looking forward to my next appointment :-) read more

My first appointment experience (this was in February2018): --Nice waiting room --Friendly staff --My appointment service began about 12 minutes after my appointment time--the dentist said that "an old friend had an emergency and I had to see him first, you know." [I didn't appreciate that. It made me feel less important. I don't know why he had to tell me that.] --Good complete examination and x-rays --Gentle, thorough cleaning with a nice hygienist --They didn't ask if I wanted fluoride treatment, just said they were doing it and then charged me for it. I explained to the front desk that I don't do fluoride and they reversed the $50 charge. --The dentist told me that I would get a complete printout that included everything we had spoken about (treatment plan). I got a treatment plan for 2 items only, which were not covered by insurance. I told the front desk I wouldn't be able to afford it at that time. They said they would call me in a month to see if I wanted to make an appointment. 6 months later, still no phone call. Everything was okay, but my gut feeling is that I need to find another dentist. read more

Was referred for emergance care... told me the emergance care would be done in 2 weeks. Sorry but 2 weeks of nerve pain is not gonna fly with me. Super glad that another place had a heart and fit me in. I might have had to wait for a few hours to be seen but it took the dentist 30 minutes including the time for the numbing to set it. Not a major blow to there day. If I did not have any other options this place would have made me wait 14 days in severe nerve pain that made breathing intensely painful. SHADY, SHADY, SHADY!!! I have been going to this place for years now, but ever since they changed management their hygienists keep getting younger and younger. I had Rachel for over a year and I went from being congratulated for my hygiene to needing a "deep cleaning". In the past 7 years I kept control of my issue, but with Rachel it's just gotten worse. Rachel is all over the map when she "cleans". Polishes before removing tarter, only uses the ultrasonic tool in sections (never even did this today on my upper teeth), flossed before scrapping. Her only positive attribute is that she's great at sales: after she told me I needed a deep cleaning she offer an assortment of out of pocket treatments that can me used. If you ask me they the new business plan of this practice is to hire mediocre hygienists that lack experience so they can make a profit. read more

I have been a patient at this office for over 5 years now, and wanted to share some of my observations and experience throughout this time. Overall, I have been very happy and satisfied with the service and care I have received at Capitol City Dental. In reviewing businesses, I generally consider the following four categories to guide my reviews: 1) Quality of service/product; 2) Customer service/communication; 3) Professionalism/cleanliness; and 4) Price. Quality of service/product: I originally started coming to this office because I work in the downtown area and it was very convenient to just walk over for my appointments. When I first started coming to the office, Dr. Hanefield was the primary dentist. He retired a couple of years ago, and Dr. Lai seems to have transitioned in to be the primary dentist since. Dr. Lai is much younger, and she has been extremely friendly and welcoming. I am not particularly nervous about going to the dentist, but I can imagine Dr. Lai being the type of dentist that would be able to make most patients feel a lot more calm. She is very knowledgeable and competent in both her explanations, and her dental work. I appreciate that she takes the time to explain what she will be working on; helps to educate me on what she is doing before, during, and after; and that she seems to work at a steady and confident pace. There have been times where Dr. Lai has recommended keeping an eye on certain areas, and other times where she has recommended further action (while providing education and an explanation why). This helps me to feel confident Dr. Lai is not just haphazardly recommending additional and unnecessary procedures. My primary hygienist is Rachel. She also has been great at explaining what she is working on before and during the cleaning, and she also shows me using the camera and monitor what has actually been done. I appreciate that she's detailed and seems to take pride in her work. I have had plenty of hygienists in the past from other dental offices that seem to rush through the cleaning, but Rachel has always been very thorough. Overall, I have nothing but positive experiences to share about the quality of dental care I have received at Capitol City Dental (cleanings, fillings, crown, and normal check-ups). Customer Service and Communication: The front office, dental assistants, doctors, and hygienists have always been friendly and communicative. A few times, I had additional questions about my insurance coverage and some issues with Delta Dental sending me a bill, and the front office has always been patient and knowledgeable in helping me. I receive reminder e-mails and texts before my appointments, and I have never had an issue getting in contact with the office when I called. There have been a couple of times where I have awkwardly walked to the front office after finishing a cleaning, not knowing whether there was something else I needed to do to "check-out". But other than that, I have no complaints and feel like the entire staff is friendly and focused on good customer service & communication. Professionalism/cleanliness: The office is extremely clean and organized. I have been to a number of other dental offices in the past 20 years where you can tell right away that the office environment feels old, dated, cluttered, and disorganized. That is definitely not the case here. The waiting area feels very clean, professional, and modern. The magazines are always perfectly laid out, the chairs and carpet are always perfectly clean, everything is wiped down regularly (I literally see the staff wiping and sanitizing everything after every patient), the files are all organized, and even the rooms I walk by on my way to the operatory look immaculate (there are a number of rooms in the hall that are for the staff equipment and supplies, and everything is extremely tidy and organized). This makes me confident that they pride themselves in keeping the office in order, and pay attention to putting a good environment forward to their patients. Price: Now, this category is usually easier to review for products like consumer goods. However, I did have the opportunity to quickly compare some of their overall fees for various services, and I found it to be pretty standard. I have a number of family friends that are dentists, and Capitol City Dental's rates are about the same. In general, I actually don't see many dental offices with rates that truly fluctuate much from each other. If the office charges way too low, I actually am more concerned that there is some compromise in terms of the quality of materials used, and I prefer to steer clear of those situations. Overall, I think the price is reasonable and the front office is knowledgeable in letting me know what my insurance will cover. Conclusion: I am very satisfied with Capitol City Dental and will continue to recommend the office to family and friends. read more

I've probably only had eight dentists in my life, but I probably visit that many restaurants in a month, so it makes it kind of hard to compare. But here's what I like about Dr. Hanefield...first, he seems to really care about my teeth; I've been to other dentists who treated their professions like jobs to make money; Hanefield treats being a dentist like an avocation, he's obviously very passionate about what he does. Second, he seems like a really good dentist. I don't have problems with the work he does, and my teeth look and feel great. He's obviously got a lot of experience, and it shows in the quality of work that he does. read more

Would not recomment this dentist for dental work. Very friendly man and friendly staff but the quality of work is sub par at best and the billing staff is incompetent. If you do decide to have the office perform any work and you use your dental insurance, be sure to watch what they are billing your insurance as well as what they are charging you. Also be sure to call your insurance carrier to find out if your out of pocket costs may be a covered benefit through them.
