I originally posted after my first visit that I had a "great experience" as a new patient and someone new to the area -- and after being a patient here for over 2 years, I can confidently say that feeling never changed. Dr. Vicuna is excellent: thorough, professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely caring. His entire staff is friendly, skilled, organized, and always welcoming. Every visit has been smooth and positive. I also appreciate that they offer very reasonable pricing for additional cleanings and services that may not be covered by insurance, which shows they truly care about patient care and accessibility. I'm genuinely sad to be leaving the practice due to a new job opportunity in South Dakota. This office is incredibly disorganized and lacks basic internal record keeping. I went here for the first time in mid-April. I was given a printed care summary and quote. When I went to prepay for my treatment, they charged me a significantly higher amount. When I noticed the error and called, the front desk claimed they "could not find" my original treatment plan in their system and asked me to email them photos of my physical printout. They emailed me an updated plan with extra work that the dentist had never discussed with me. The healthcare coordinator, Elizabeth, told me she would give me a call to review and never did. I didn't feel comfortable continuing with them because they couldn't maintain proper records and didn't follow up. I canceled my upcoming appointment and requested a refund ($1,800+) on May 19th. They told me they would mail me a check. On June 15th, I called and was told the refund was submitted on June 9th. On June 29th, I called back because nothing arrived. I was told the check was printed on June 19th and was in the mail. Today, July 8th, I called a third time. Crystal, the Operations Manager, told me they can't issue paper checks for CareCredit refunds. They voided the check and finally pushed the electronic refund through TODAY. I had to call to request the digital receipt with a confirmation number for the refund. If I hadn't called today, who knows when they would have processed the refund. I don't know why they said they would mail a check when they SHOULD know the refund should be processed via CareCredit. This has been a headache of back an forth with this office. The burden was on me to follow up. Management needs to seriously evaluate the ethics, communication, and training of their billing staff. Avoid this practice. read more

Dr. Vicuna is the best! I've been going to Midtown Modern Dental since 2016 where I received my cleanings and general maintenance. However, about few months ago Dr. Vicuna noticed a crack in one of my veneers which got progressively worse. I decided to bite the bullet (no pun intended) and get a new veneer/crown a month later. Today was the second of two parts completed. The crown arrived from the lab--he put it in today and it looks spectacular. I feel very confident in his professionalism, skill level, and up-to-date equipment and techniques. I'm so happy I will probably die with a smile on my face! Besides we all need to smile more---right? The office is immaculate, the staff very positive and knowledgeable and I love the community involvement they have. For example, providing toy drives for foster children, etc. Can't say enough great things about Dr. Vicuna and his team. Thank you, Dr. V, I am so grateful you are in the neighborhood. read more

I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this office. During a routine dental cleaning, my permanent fixed orthodontic retainer was broken during flossing performed by staff. The retainer was intact prior to the appointment and was damaged while under their care. Afterward, the office was slow to respond and ultimately refused to take responsibility for replacing the retainer. They offered to either re-bond it themselves--despite stating during the visit that they were not confident they could ensure it would be done correctly--or to provide a removable retainer, which is not equivalent to the permanent retainer I had. They also insisted I travel 45-60 minutes to orthodontists they selected, rather than allowing me to see a provider near my home. As a medical student working long hospital hours, this was not reasonable. More importantly, none of these options restore me to my pre-appointment condition. The retainer was broken by the office, yet they refused to reimburse for proper like-for-like replacement. Because of the office's refusal to resolve this appropriately, I have filed formal complaints with both the State Dental Board and Delta Dental, and I have had to consult legal counsel to address the liability involved. I would strongly caution patients with permanent appliances or orthodontic hardware to be very careful here, as this office does not appear willing to take responsibility when damage occurs during treatment. read more

At best, avoid chain dental groups like this one. At the very least, try to get a second opinion before doing work with them. The story: Went in for a chipped tooth. No pain. Had been like that for years. Figured I'd have it taken a look it. The dentist, Vacuna, sees me and recommends a crown. Right away. I said I'd prefer a filling, then if needed go with a crown. He shut that down real quick and said crown is the only way. This was my opportunity to go get a second opinion. Long story short, I got the crown. Two weeks later, having pain. Did an adjustment. A month later, still pain and can't chew. During the appointments vacuna seemed irritated, making it seem like I leave them office and go chew on rocks. In reality, I can't even chew on bread or anything for that matter. Two adjustments and pain persisted. Wanted to see him again, he refused and just referred me to his endodontist. That didn't sit well with me. I complained on yelp. They reached out and he saw me again. Made another adjustment. I asked for the crown to be removed and replaced. A healthy tooth with no pain shouldn't have pain after getting a crown. I'll fitted crown. He said he doesn't mind doing that but wanted me to see the endodontist first. I did. He recommended for a root canal. So after having just spent $800, now I was quoted another $400 for a root canal. He said give it some time and the pain might go away. I gave it a few months and the pain persists. In fact it's worst after the adjustments he made. So I've been just chewing with my right side. Imagine my frustration. Before, at least I could use the left side. Just had to deal with the annoyance of food particles getting stuck which I could floss out. So I called again. Spoke with crystal Navarro and made another appointment follow up with Vicuña again. I wanted him to try to replace the crown to see if it would resolve the pain before committing to a root canal. Two days later, got a voicemail saying they cancelled my appointment. He doesn't want to see me and wants me to go back to the endodontist. Have called multiple times since to speak to someone and keep being put on hold and/or going to voicemail. Are you f***ing kidding me?! Blows my mind how places like this even stay in business with the way they treat the people who keep the lights on. read more

The first time, I gave them grace. I swallowed my doubts, paid again, and told myself maybe it was just bad luck. I even got the best crown they offered both times, the one they assured me would last. Ceres, they said. Top-tier, they said. But within months... again, it fell off. Over $5,500, gone. Do you know how many sacrifices that took? What that meant for me and my family? And now, I'm waiting , waiting for the email I already know by heart, the one where they tell me it'll cost even more to fix their mistake. This isn't just about teeth. It's about trust. About the feeling of being dismissed. About the silence you hear when your pain isn't profitable to them anymore. And that's why I'm speaking up, because no one should have to cry over crowns. No one should have to beg to be treated fairly after spending thousands in good faith. I'm taking them to small claims. I'm done being quiet. The office is nice and clean and in a very convenient location in midtown. The gentleman who did my initial intake and X-rays was really friendly and checked in multiple times to see if I needed anything, the dental hygienist who did my cleaning was really friendly and courteous, and Dr. Vicuna himself was really awesome and an all around great guy. He's incredibly knowledgeable and honest and helpful with suggestions on some of my concerns and you can absolutely tell that he loves what he does. This place was great a few years ago. Now loyal clients can't even get appointments. I've been going since day one, and haven't been able to get an appointment in a year now. Every time I call I get transferred and they say that the "popular" appointments are booked up. They also said they only have one dentist now so there's even less appointments. After not being able to get a appointment for months, I finally went somewhere else and they got me in that week, and did a better cleaning than I'm used to. I seriously can't express how beyond grateful I am for this dental group. My dentist at this company is amazing , kind , and caring . I had gone through cancer where I had to do chemo and also was in a very abusive relationship so needless to say I did not have the beautiful smile I once had . But with midtown dental group I was able to get my smile back . They took the time and care with me and helped in any way they could especially financially with a very good payment plan . I really don't think I can express the love I have for them and the respect I do . If you do exactly what they say to do everything will usually go as planned and heal correctly . There are definitely some of the woman that work there that are so amazing . I could t have done this without a couple of the woman there and how they made me feel and built my confidence up for me . Also everything g was explained so well that I never walked away with not understanding what I was going through and having done . I just had my first experience with Modern Dental and it was a disaster! I had to wait an entire month just to get an appointment, so I had fairly high expectations. First, the receptionist is incompetent. She sent me the wrong appointment date and time and I had to call her back to get her to change it to the right time. Then, she never sent me the online admission form I could have filled out in advance of my appointment. I was stuck filling that out at the beginning of my appointment. Lots of information to type in! Next, she misspelled my name in the MyChart medical record and had to go back and change it for me. Second, after taking a full set of X-rays, and making me wait for almost two hours, I was told that the regular machine that is used for teeth cleaning was broken, and the old backup machine was also broken?! So, I had to reschedule to the next week?! Third, I was charged the full amount of the visit even though I had not received a teeth cleaning. I said I would pay after I received the cleaning next week, but they were indignant and insisted I pay anyway. This place is unprofessional and a disorganized nightmare! The dental hygienist named Robin, who took my X-rays, was quite pleasant. Otherwise, the whole experience was a big waste of time! This is some kind of Harry Potter dental office, not a real dental office like what I am used to. So disappointing because I live right next door to this dental office. I'm pretty convinced this place is a scam. Had a good experience followed by a very concerning one. Good experience: I hadn't been to a dentist in a while and was anxious about it. So I went in to start up routine care. They told me I needed a deep cleaning which made sense, but it was very expensive even with insurance. I did it and stayed on track with their frequent cleaning schedule. In 2023 I was laid off twice so had inconsistent insurance and income, so I didn't go to the dentist, but I kept up with my oral hygiene. So now I go in for an appt 1.5 years later. at 2PM, they take me back for X-rays (which the xray arm was bouncing so they were very blurry) then leave me in a dentist chair for nearly half an hour before anyone comes to see me. I start to realize if the cleaning or exam haven't started yet, then im going to be here for a while. The doctor and assistant come in and they tell me that I have a 90 minute deep cleaning scheduled at 3, so this will be a 2.5hr + appt (which I was not prepared for) Then the doctor, (before beginning the exam!) starts talking about how long it's been since I came in and tells me some story about some guy he helped was eating a salad and his tooth fell out. Then proceeds to begin the exam, I have no cavities and no symptoms but this doctor is basically talking like I have late stage periodontal disease but is giving me NO specifics. Didn't talk me through any findings just says some vague stuff about periodontal disease but I expected at least some talking about my teeth or gums? I ultimately ended up rescheduling the cleaning because i didn't have time or money for that extensive of a procedure (or even certainty that it was necessary). But the really concerning thing is that they booked the original deep cleaning for me BEFORE my exam. Which means that: regardless of the state of my teeth, they were going to bill for the highest amount of money they could get. I will be going to get a second opinion because I had a root scale and plane 2 years ago with 2 dental cleanings and laser treatments since then and followed their recommended oral hygiene routine. Then they want me to do that extremely expensive and painful procedure AGAIN before even looking at me. No. They were pretty pushy about the credit card offerings too which felt really scammy. I'm out. Going to a family practice instead. Another update: when I requested my X-rays they sent me the wrong persons X-rays. (HIPAA violation) Also on my quote that I rejected, they provided an $88 line item for 'oral hygiene instructions' read more

I never thought I could actually love my dentist, but well ... here we are! This team is the unicorn when it comes to dental practices (and just healthcare in general). From booking the appointment with their sleek app, to the super friendly front desk team, to the dental assistant (who I could not stop talking and laughing with) to Dr. V himself who is not only uber cool, but smart, funny, quick, and thorough. And the best part, I felt immediate trust. At no time did I feel like they were trying to push me into treatments that I didn't need (which is not the experience at my previous dentist). I kept going back despite an odd feeling about my experience there: the lost my my X-rays, a did a 5 minute cleaning (huh?) I asked why, they brushed me off. The Citrus Heights location canceled my appointment as soon as I walked in the door . No explanation. Well at the 19th st location I went in with my crowned #31 pain. They sent me to an endodontist. He tested the tooth, it was sensitive to cold and he told me I needed a root canal. I later called back because I misplaced my quote for the cost for the root canal. They said they showed no record of having sent me to the endodontist. I called the endodontist, they said the same. I decided to never go back to any of their locations. I finally found a recommended dentist. Well guess what? MMD was going to do a root canal on the WRONG tooth! My pain was coming from the tooth behind the crowned tooth. The tooth behind was clearly cracked open with visible decay and infection. I was just treated for that tooth and am pain free. My dentist was aghast that they wouldn't have addressed that tooth first. Well my first impression of MMD 3 years ago was correct. Two locations out of two I went to were nowhere I'd ever go back to. I only went here for one cleaning which was a pretty unremarkable service, not the worst I've experienced but also not the best. Parking is a bit of a struggle too but I suppose that's to be expected in Midtown. However, this review is more for the staff. I moved to another area and needed my X-rays sent to the new office as my insurance only covers one set per year. It took me three phone calls for this to finally get done. The excuse I got was that the person in the front was by himself and had multiple other duties to tend to. I understand that and that all businesses are probably struggling with the current pandemic. However, I called 2 weeks in advance to my new dental appointment so that it gave them plenty of time and I didn't end up getting them until 2 days before my appointment. Not a bad office to go to, however if you ever leave and need records transferred, arrange to have this done well in advance. read more

I finally found one that wasn't as bad as the others and takes my insurance- so I decided to give this place a try. I was on hold for over 9 minutes then lots of ringing and a recording that said no one is available to help you and hung up on me. I called back a very tired or annoyed, or both, Elizabeth answered the phone. I explained what happened and she repeated this is Elizabeth how can I help you. I'm taking this as a sign that it's not the place for me if I'm already not being treated very well. Why is it so hard to find a good and honest dentist? I've always had a really difficult time finding a dentist I feel comfortable with. The team at Midtown Modern is extremely welcoming, and go above and beyond to make patients feel comfortable. I'm especially grateful for their payment plan offering. I started going there and saw a dentist who was a great, but she left after a few months and I got stuck with the main dentist there. He's dismissive, rude, and unprofessional. I had some issues he just refused to resolve and I had to go to the corporate offices to get resolved. (Corporate office was wonderful and helpful). Their staff are always super nice but it seems like they never really have it together. I regularly got multiple phone calls to confirm appointments, which was annoying. Also seemed like they were understaffed based on how many client they had because it was alway very long hold times to talk to someone if I called. I tried a few times to use their online portal and they always claimed they never saw the messages on that portal. I was disappointed with how they handled Covid. I sat in the waiting room one day and listened to another patient call when Omicron was going on. The patient was asking to reschedule on short notice because they were elderly and felt uncomfortable going to the doctors at that time and the front desk staff basically refused to reschedule, saying "We haven't had any documented covid cases". All this while many times I went in and saw staff walking around with masks down. It made me really question how seriously they took the pandemic and I didn't love how little regard they had for their elderly clients. With the dentist I actually liked having moved elsewhere, I'll be moving elsewhere as well. read more

Here is the update: After multiple calls with my insurance and bringing them in this conversation. They finally reimbursed my money. They overcharged me by 339. Always pay attention to the billing codes regarding the bill. If they ignore any questions you have regarding your bill, bring your insurance into the conversation with you. Clearly, if I continued to do work there, they would have never told me that they overcharged me or reimbursed me for the work done that they overcharged me for. read more

I've been going here for about 3 years. Until this past year I have not had any issues; staff are friendly, gentle, and I received good care. The last 2 experiences I have had here were horrible. I came in for a scheduled appointment and waited over an hour to get a cleaning and then just left. When I called to reschedule 6 months later, I called 3x and they could not schedule me. They told me a specialist would call me to schedule and I did not hear anything back. Needless to say, I've moved on. read more

Great for cleanings. Not so sure about check-ups. The first day of visiting this office I had my yearly check-up and cleaning done. The hygienist was super. She was through and helpful. Then the dentist came in, and I was examined. Right off the bat I was told that I had about 8-10 fillings that needed to be done. And the Dr was rushing to get to their son's game, for real? I didn't want to doubt but after going to my follow up appointments, there was "only time" for 2 of the many fillings I "needed" done when I was scheduled for half. Dare to say after the visit my entire mouth was swollen and sore for over a week plus. I have never been given such a heavy dose of anesthesia, not once but twice! I could not eat for one side of my mouth for that entire week after. Not to mention there was no consultation about the type of filing I wanted and whether or not I wanted something darkly visible or nice and pearly white... The front office is awfully friendly but quick to charge you for services. read more
