Capitol Bar is one of those places that you lie about the next day when, for some reason, you did end up here. Or at least that's what I do. A cocktail bar with a large selection of cheapo drinks, dimly lit and frequented by about 85% girls and 15% hopeful boys. The cocktails aren't good but they are cheap. A fiver buys you an Irish Mule (Jameson, ginger and lime) or even a mojito, for 6 Euro you can get a passion fruit margarita. None of the cocktails taste the way they should but they come in big glasses and the night is young. So is the average age, clearly attracted by the prices. In fairness, what they do, they do well: there are plenty drink specials like 2 for 7euro on Tuesdays, plenty of comfy seats, a separate bar that serves only shots (all a fiver), the venue is clean, there are plenty toilets and the staff is alright. If you don't mind the terrible hangover caused by too much sugar in your drink and too many different kinds of booze or you are young enough to handle that sort of thing, try Capitol Bar. My only advice is to stay clear of the ones that you haven't heard of before and you should be ok. read more

My sore head today is a reflection of this place's cheap cocktails. 5 euros a pop before midnight, you can't beat that! Great cocktail menu, the bartender I dealt with was charming, he even deviated from the menu to do my favourite cocktail. It's moderately sized, interior is modern, comfy couches. Music is chart, the DJ was abit too volume happy so we had to shout to talk and then we gave up and just focused on drinking the cocktails. At one point I thought I was at convention celebrating the show Sex & The City which then shifted to me thinking I was in a lesbian bar. It was thronged with well done up young women and hardly any men. Boys if you want to score a chick, this is the place for you! Girls if you want to score a chick this also is the place for you but in a very Sex & The City hook up kinda way, that is they will be straight again the next morning. The only reason why I am giving it three stars is that it would not be my scene and the music is too loud but it's a great place to pre-game it with some cheap well made cocktails before hitting another spot. read more

Saturday night in Temple bar area, 8pm. Looking to get an after dinner drink in a place that is not mobbed. This place seems to have room. We walk around the corner and see a crowd of people out front. Ask the doorman if we can pop in for a drink. After a quick look over we get the A-OK to enter. Down a few steps on the left we head for a bar and quickly order our drinks. After a few, friendly words with other patrons we settle in and take a look around. This is going to be controversial, but I swear, this is what I saw for real. Not kidding, not exaggerating. For real. We are sitting to the side of the main bar. A bartender is pouring bottled water into a bottle of Jameson. Another employee came over and is talking to her while she is doing this. She 'squishes' the empty bottle, making that crushed plastic sound, before throwing it into the trash. Then she puts the pour spout back on top of the Jameson bottle and walks back into the main bar area. O.M.G. Really? Why me?! It is at this point I think to look at the Yelp reviews. Whoa. First thing I see is to the effect of 'my white friends got in, but not me'. Second thing I see is 'Asians not allowed'. Holy mackerel! My SO and I take a serious look around and O.M.G., no kidding, not one non-WASP in the joint! I feel dirty and disgusted. I have no idea that anyone in here has a clue of this fact, but now that it has been pointed out, it is so very clear. We left just as fast as we could. I will never return. read more

OK I still hate Capitol, I do, I just happened to have a great night there last night... which was more to do with the company than the establishment (at one point I laughed so hard I thought I might have an aneurism).. ok it was a little to do with the 5 euro cocktails - I've given them one more star for that. I still think it's a place to be avoided like the plague on a weekend. Anyway you can happily get sozzled on the quite extensive menu of cocktails, all of which are 5 euro all night Sunday - Thursday, and during the week you can get seats and pretty quick service... still though the place annoys me.... maybe it's that every girl there is wearing is tiny dress and giant heels, or maybe it's the remnants of puke is all the sinks... but after a few the blaring music starts to become less annoying and everything is hilarious -your friend may even attempt to throw limes into a pint class across the far side of the room without anyone noticing. read more

I was in Capitol the other night for the first time in a good while. They no longer have €5 cocktails every night; they have €5 cocktails all night Monday and Tuesday, and for the rest of the week cocktails are the normal (expensive) prices. They do have a €5 cocktail menu, although most of the cocktails on it are made of Mickey Finns and don't seem that nice or alcoholic. The music in Capitol is very strange. Most of the songs they played the other night were exactly a year old for some reason - Katy Perry, Kid Rock, all that lark. It was like listening to a Summer Hits 2008 cd. And if you're not on the cheap cocktails, the price of drink is extortionate: the Guinness is €4.90 (which is reasonable) but most lagers are €5.70 (shocking). I've only ever been to Capitol (Monday and Tuesday nights) on cheap cocktail night where drinks cost a fiver. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother with this lounge. I'll start with the good. Capitol, in my opinion, does great cocktails. They have pages and pages of different fancy drinks to choose from. My personal favourites are the Margaritas (strawberry) and the champagne cocktails (the Marilyn Monroe). This place can be a good spot to have a girl's night. If you close your eyes and pretend real hard, you can pretend you're on Sex and the City. Now for the bad... The people who come here are not my crowd, meaning that they are into the Scene. My review of Capitol has to be set in two timezones. firstly, 5-7 years ago: Capitol is a buzzing friendly bar set on 2 levels with a lovely piano bar upstairs and comfortable seating. DJ Carlos is savage any night he does and Jonnie, the head doorman from Birmingham is an absolute gent and will happily waffle the ears off you and even wave at you as you drive by. Present day: Capitol is a lacklustre cocktail bar that has all the impressions of selling itself short. Although a couple of the staff and management are there years who are friendly and bright, the new staff have a kind of half arsed this-is-just-a-job type attitude instead of the ownership attitude which makes other bars more enjoyable. We were told to stop by here for cheap cocktails, good music, and lots of space to sit. And it ticked all the boxes. Extensive menu of oldies, newbies, and a few creative ones as well. I see where others are coming from by saying it seems superficial and the crowd aren't the best - I guess you have to expext that in any cheap cocktail place. There are pages of awesome cocktails for a good price, and it's great for starting the night off in. When it isn't too busy, service isn't too slow. The specials are great too - they sometimes have certain times you can get particular drinks for cheap (I've been there a few times where every time a horn goes off you've got like, two minutes to get a two euro beer). The music is fine, the drinks are good and I would recommend it, but I'm taking off stars just for how crazy busy it gets at weekends and the fact there's no real atmosphere. read more

Unbelievable! The bouncer is absolutely terrible ! I came here to celebrate my friends 21st birthday all the way from America ! When I approached the door they told me I wasn't old enough to get in, from judging what I look like , it says 21+ at the door and I'm 22 ! yet they denied me . I firmly believe that this was a race issue as all my "Caucasian" or Irish friends were let in but I was left out because I was the only Asian in the group . The Capitol is a decent late bar in Dublins city center that serves €5 cocktails till midnight every weekend. I have to admit that I've had some great nights in here. The dj plays all chart music, which is grand but the dance-floor area (which is really just the front part of the bar) is always really busy. However, it's usually packed with beautiful women so it's not too bad :) The frustrating thing about this place is that it can get so busy on a Saturday night that you will often be waiting up to 10 minutes for a drink. And it empties out around 12ish once the cocktail promotion is over. Still, it's a very good place to meet up with friends before going on to a club. read more

Cheap cocktails in a pseudo-posh surrounding? Nice one! This place is decked out in the usual white and 'cool' style, though if you check out upstairs they have one of the coolest light fixtures I've ever seen. It has to be said that the drinks are cheap (before 12) for a reason...they're typical Irish cocktails, which means any alcohol content is negligible. But they're grand and it's always got fabulously cheesy music playing, which is always a plus. It does tend to get packed enough on a Saturday night, so if you're with a group, try and go a wee bit early and settle yourselves on one of the comfy couches upstairs. read more

The selection of cocktails they offer is quite extensive and at €5 each you really can't complain. Capitol is a great place to meet friends after work for a cocktail (or 10) and a catch up. I would like there to be a bit more seating or tables to leave your drink down, if you dont get a seat and a table then you are left standing holding your drink which isn't ideal especially if you avail of the two cocktails for 10euro. Was just admiring this place when the bar woman refused to serve my boyfriend. She very condescendingly commented on what he was wearing and told (not even asked) us to leave. Keep in mind that it was 4pm, we were the only two in the lounge, both sober, reasonably dressed for the time of day and of age. Checked their website and there's no mention of a dress code. Got out of there straight away and don't intend on returning. Judging from other reviews it's definitely not the first time this has happened there. :/ read more

A group of me and friends went here because we saw all good reviews and it seemed like a nice place only to have every one let in except for one of my friends who was refused entry without explanation, he hadn't had any thing to drink yet as he was just finished work, and he had valid government ID showing he is 22. He tried to find out from the bouncer why he was being refused and was told repeatedly that it was against policy and he would have to email to find out, its been 4 work days now and still no response to efforts to contact them. So I would recommend that if you do no wish to be discriminated against avoid this place, there is no doubt in my mind that he was refused due to his assumed sexual preference as there where no other possible reasons. I'm between two minds about Capitol. On the one hand, it has an amazingly creative, cheap and long list of cocktails, the bartenders are quick and it can be a lot of fun. Wednesday nights in particular can be hilarious, they do a deal where they pick an artist and any time a song of theirs comes on, shots are just 2 euro. You have to order within the length of the song and it can be absolute mayhem. On the other hand, it's not a place you can go and sit with a drink and friends. It's usually filled with semi-drunk, early-twenties, terribly good-looking people on their way to a nightclub. The music is very chart-based and very loud, and the venue itself feels a bit tacky and uncomfortable. They sacrificed table space for dancing areas, but no-one is ever quite tipsy enough to go and have a dance-- or as soon as they are, they move onto Coppers. If you're with some fun friends and you don't mind a bit of a crowd push, bartenders who don't have time to chat, and you're not in the mood for heavy conversation with people around you, it can be a lot of fun. However I'm about at the stage where I'm starting to outgrow places like this. If you're just looking for cheap tasty cocktails, or you're a student looking for somewhere glitzy and different for a few pre-drinks, it's definitely worth a try. It's 21s and they're pretty strict about it, which is probably a good thing. read more

Hmm, Capitol... a bar with an identity crisis, I say. Downstairs has a big dancefloor (no one ever seems to dance), a shiny chrome bar with red plastic bar stools. The clientele seem to be equally plastic, supping on cheap cocktails, faces glowing in the "atmospheric" red light under the fake chandeliers. Upstairs is more loungey, but again they've missed the mark, with decor that falls somewhere between your granny's sitting room and a flashy New York cocktail bar. A contradiction in terms? Exactly. Music is chart pop, crowd is rowdy. I stand open to correction - perhaps this place has improved somewhat since I was last here (and vowed never to come back) about three years ago. On the plus side: it opens late and doesn't charge an admission fee. read more

I'm not really a fan of the Capitol Lounge on George's Street. It's one of those many super pubs that opened up during the Celtic Tiger era and now look a bit like they're hanging on for their dear life. But I will hand it to the Capitol for at least making an attempt to keep the punters coming. It might feel a bit stale in there but they are now doing cocktails for only €4.95 until 11pm every night. I was in there recently for a strawberry daiquiri with a friend of mine and they were only delicious and very inexpensive considering many bars charge €8 and €9 and more for cocktails. Another advantage of the Capitol is that it's a late bar every night of the week and they don't charge at the door. Anyone on a cheap night out would do well to check this bar out. read more

I've been here only once, but it was overall an enjoyable experience. Very cheap cocktails that are of reasonable quality (ish), nice staff and it's a nice layout. Perfect for a few casual drinks, or pre-drinks before coppers etc, which is what I presume most people use it for. They are fairly strict on the over 21s age policy, and the bouncers can be a bit touch and go sometimes. read more

Really like Capitol and have been a few times. Great to have a few inexpensive cocktails that still taste pretty good. However was there last night and stood at the bar for 15 mins while the bartenders skipped over me repeatedly, couldn't figure out why. I definitely get that it takes a while to make each one but I was totally ignored for a long time which really bothered me. I almost left the place all together but my friend said she'd try. To be honest the main reasons I've ever been here were because of their 5e cocktails after college! And clearly because of this - and being in Dublin's city centre - it's very popular hence often being over-crowded! Haven't actually stayed past midnight, but up until that time it's a pretty fun atmosphere, and a lot of mixed age groups! It's definitely somewhere to go to pre-drink before heading to a favourite nightclub. I've never had a problem with the bouncers, and although the entry age is 21, they don't seem too strict on that, as long as you look decent and old enough I suppose! I'm only 20 and have been here a few times with no issues. Reading Monkey61's review I'd actually love to try out that website/free champagne/birthday bit for the next birthday! This bar is one of dublins hotspots, however the only problem I find with this bar is that it is always busy! They have great cocktails, wines and beer range, the bar is very relaxed and the DJ plays a range of music from indie-rock to hip-hop. I recommend to visit this place as it is reasonably priced and a great place to dance and meet people but the drawback is to go on a day where it will be a little less busy or you'll find yourself squashed amongst others,lol. read more

Capitol bar on Georges street, just down from Hogans bar is a popular pub in Dublin - mainly because of the 5euro cocktails till 12 o'clock. So even if you intend to go somewhere else it is well worth doing a pub crawl and leaving at 12... though you may find you might want to stay as the music and atmosphere is always good. Drinking in Dublin is an expensive business, especially if you want cocktails. You could go to Cafe en Seine, the Octagon bar, or any number of trendy establishments - but your wallet will not thank you. Instead, try Capitol. They have an extensive list of cocktails and shooters but what most people don't know is, they are all a fiver until midnight, every day of the week! So load up before midnight to set yourself up for a night on the town. Okay so the music is pretty rubbish - I've been going for years and they still play the same mixed cd (including Breakfast at Tiffanys and Maria by Blondie) every evening. But it's pretty easy to get a seat as long as you get there before ten. The champagne cocktails (okay fizzy wine) are amazing, and surprisingly potent. If you find yourself falling over one of the awkwardly low tables, don't say I didn't warn you! Ask for the Fraise Royal - strawberry juice and champagne - it's not on the menu anymore but they'll still make it. The bar is fully stocked otherwise and they have decent wine list with some very affordable prosecco. Also if you sign up on the website, you get a free bottle of champagne and ten free cocktails for your friends on your birthday! I've never actually done this - but I presume it works. read more
