We went diving with Captain Hook's Key West over Fourth of July weekend and had a great time doing two reef dives! The dive shop was organized and the process through the morning went smoothly. For a 9AM boat time, we got to the ship just before 8AM. The waiver process, just like the process to register for the dives, was smooth and well rehearsed. Gear issue and transportation to the boat were seamless. All the folks in the shop, on the boat, and diving with us were so friendly, informative, and personable, and most importantly made us feel safe! Disclaimer: I'm a super novice diver so my only goals were to be safe, see some fish, and reinforce the basics of scuba. All three of these goals were achieved with the help of Captain Hooks! Once on the boat, we got all gear issued and did two 45-min reef dives. Wildlife was great, gear was great, and so was our dive master! Truly exactly what I was looking for. Great dives with Capt Hooks. I dropped by and the team laid out different dive opportunities offered by their multiple locations. We are staying in Big Pine Key so I chose the Looe Reef which is a short 45 minutes boat ride. Skipper Will was jovial but very serious about safety briefing. Dive master Mark gave us a great overview of the area we would be diving. I was paired up with a capable open water diver Sally & had very smooth dives. Mates Michelle & Lynn were ready on the spot to help us out of our tank racks, on exit take fins, keep others clear of the ladder area, and guide us back to our tank rack. I'm an advanced diver and there weren't enough divers to dive Cayman Salvager or Vandy on the 2 days of the week they offered. Rescheduled a few times and ended up on afternoon cattle boat in Looe Key for 2 mediocre shallow dives with snorkelers on top. I was mistakenly charged twice so dealing with credit card company now. Went diving with Capt Malcolm and Dive Master Sam to the Vandenberg. My 4th time diving the Vandy, this one was the best. Only 2 other divers on the boat that day, we never saw any other divers on the wreck. Sam knows the wreck and where to go to avoid the current to make it an easier dive. We saw plenty of fish- a hundred or so barracuda, a couple goliath groupers, eels, and the usual fish. Saw the other half of the wreck on the second dive, featured a couple of swim throughs (though I bailed on the second one, wasn't feeling it) and a nice safe dive profile. I was on the fence on the fifth star, then Capt Malcolm cued up some Van Halen on the stereo, thus cementing his legendary status. Henry kept me in the know the day before the dive so I knew where/when to be, very friendly. I've been diving in Key West for 20 years, originally with Sub Tropic who are out of business, Cap'n Hook's is my new regular when I make my coffee runs to Key West. Where to begin? Bob answered the phone when I called to arrange a short diving vacation (4 days on the Keys, 3 with diving) with my family. Answered all the questions I had and then made a few suggestions for lodging and meals. On the day we arrived, he let us secure our luggage in the shop while we were diving because we couldn't check into the hotel yet. Bob and Cece operate an incredible shop! When we got to the shop, Charles got us signed in, provided the weights, and then debriefed us on what to expect. Talk about a well-orchestrated plan: set up and test our kits for a safety check and fix any issues before leaving the shop, load gear onto the truck, load passengers into the shuttle to the yacht club where the boat is. Taylor got us to and from the yacht club and let us know things we could do when not diving. Boat captain Jarret and divemaster Victoria were fantastic on the water. She provided the most comprehensive debriefing I've experienced in my 28 years diving! And she's got a sense of humor: "Go for distance if you're going to throw up," and "the fish want a warm meal too," were offered as encouragement to the diver who was seasick. And very seriously, she has a respect and passion for the health of the reef locally ("No touch, no take" when diving in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary) as well as globally. She shared my dismay when I described the diver I saw pulling himself hand-over-hand on the reef below. He wasn't from our boat. The diving was superb with Victoria describing topography and sealife we should expect. She was most attentive helping divers and snorkels both getting into and out of the water. On subsequent days, divemasters Brad and Max were just as helpful. The second day diving included divemaster Max and cheauffer Brad (what versatility, he dives and drives!). More serious fun and superior diving. It is noted that safety is a priority with Dive Key West; no solo divers and stay with your buddy group if you're assigned to one. It was great learning the background of the crew and it made the journey to the dive spots seem to pass quickly. The third day out we got to watch a fellow earning his rescue diver certification as we were doing our own dives. His check-out training was thorough and realistic. In fact, as passengers on the boat, we were in on a secret "man overboard drill" before we left the dive site. The instructors could've phoned-it-in, pretending, but no - they made it as authentic as possible. When the training exercises were completed, and we were under way back to the yacht club, the debriefing of his training provided meaningful, specific, constructive criticism. We were just flies on the wall, but if it were me receiving that feedback, I would not have felt belittled or diminished in anyway. The only downside was one member of my family who is acutely ill and was only able to dive the very first afternoon of our three day vacation. Bob and Cece could have smiled and kept our money, but they didn't. They offered a refund for the unused dives. A few days after we returned home, the shop called to see how our family member was feeling, if she recovered from her illness. If you put that altogether, we could not offer higher praise for Dive Key West. I know we will be back to their shop! read more

The crew of the boat were great, Captain Malcom, Crewmate Daniel and Divemaster Rob. I was diving with my daughter and daughter-in-law. This was my first ocean boat dive and Rob was great making sure I was comfortable and kept an eye on me in the water. Upon arrival, we were forced to attach our bcd and reg to a tank - to test pressure, analyze nitrox, prove our reg could breathe and the bcd inflate/deflate!!! Mind you, these were my own tanks I'd already analyzed, and I've used my equipment for years (including just 2 days prior in the upper Keys) - and always keep maintenance up to date. I had my logs so I could prove my experience. They eased up on following dives, but if you're experienced - you may want to have your dive shop call ahead of time to inform them of your lack of need for special attention (though I'm not sure it will help!). They logged our beginning and ending air pressure. We did 4 dives with them and were very limited on time at depth. On a wreck dive (first dive of the day at 77' max) we were forced to begin to ascend after only 20 minutes!! I ended up back on the boat with 1600 lbs!!!! This may be appropriate for some of the beginner divers they assuredly get in the Keys, but I'd like to dive my own profile. I don't think I would return read more

Four of us dove with Captain Hook's out of Dive Key West from November 28-30, 2020. This was a great experience for all of us! We came down to get more experience and knock out the dive portion of several different specialty diving classes. Our instructor, Max Ebel, was fantastic! He taught clearly and made it fun. He had an assistant instructor, Jess, who was also wonderful. They made us feel safe and showed us around the USS Vandenberg wreck; we practiced wreck diving skills and did our first deep dives with them! We also visited the Haystacks with a guide named Sam, who was calm, collected, and is a great relationship counselor . Finally, a shout out to H-Ro, the lionfish killer, whose stories kept us entertained! The staff and crew were all very professional and also a lot of fun. It can't be easy for them to take a bunch of divers with only 15-30 dives under their belts and keep them all safe and show them a good time, but they made it easy and fun. My husband and I just got our Advanced Adventurer and Nitrox certification through SSI. Our instructor Stan is an ex Navy Diver! Talk about learning from a pro, he was an excellent instructor who doesn't sugar coat and really makes sure you understand what you're doing. As a new diver I was extremely nervous. Fortunately I was paired with Ryan Freeman. He was amazing! He was super patient, extremely informative and just fabulous. He has an excellent sense of humor, which did wonders to calm my nerves. He took the time to show me how to do everything and if I didn't get something we'd go over it until I did. He would celebrate when I got things right and help me correct and learn when I didn't. The rest of the people at the shop are just as awesome! On our first boat dive captain Rick was awesome. He helped steady me as I awkwardly walked to the edge of the boat with my flippers on. Ryan was already waiting in the water for me. Sam was also on the trip with us. The shop looked nice,unfortunately the individual who was going to help us... Let's just say there was no reason to act that way. Needless to say we will not be returning and we will be discussing this with others in the dive community. Considering that I am a scuba instructor with PADI and my husband is in the military, it will probably be a lot. Update: as an instructor I should be able to rent as many tanks as I need for a class. I went to the shop to try and give them another try because I needed tanks and it's closest to Sigsbee base. I told them I needed 3 tanks. I pulled out my cert card, proof of insurance, and business license. They told me they only rent 2 tanks per day no matter your cert level. So basically, I will never be taking my students to this shop. I will suggest they buy their soft gear at divers direct and everything else online. If you need to find a size, go to this shop to try gear on, then buy online. They do not deserve your business! Also, if you need to rent a whole set up, go to Finz. They don't charge extra for a computer and their tanks are only $10. read more

Went to DIVE KEY WEST to purchase a PolarProFilters Switchblade ($69.95+tax) and it didn't even last one dive as it's an overpriced toy. I brought the Switchblade back 2 days after purchase. I first dealt with one of the clerks, explaining in great detail the actual issues with the product, showing him the manufacturing flaws of the product. I asked about the Backscatter Flip system and was ready to purchase this item taking into account DIVE KEY WEST would take the defective Switchblade back and apply the purchase price to the new filter. The clerk explained all the pieces, laying out three red filters, a top hinge, and frame, totalling $225. I saw the Backscatter Flip at Divers Direct, and knew the package I should buy, as it was available in one box, at one price, for $134. How on Earth was this guy coming up with $225? Realizing he was clueless, I asked for my money back. He said I would have to talk to the owner, Bob. I went into the same explanation about the flaws with the product and he'd have to return it to the manufacturer for repair, because that was the policy on camera equipment. Now, this is not camera equipment; this is Chinese-made junk plastic. Explaining that was unacceptable, I had purchased an inferior product, I would expect he'd stand behind the it and I'd just like my money back, as I reiterated the issues with the product were clear and apparent manufacturing flaws. He again denied my request. I finally asked for a replacement, advising I'd sell it on eBay and potentially get most, if not all, of my money back. He was conveniently out of stock on a replacement product and parts. Well, the conversation devolved into him getting more frustrated at my insistence and then he gave in; he'd take the product back with a 20% restocking fee. I politely gave it one more shot and asked for a full and complete refund on a clearly flawed item and that was when he descended into outright belligerence, slander and name-calling in an elevated tone of voice, "I just don't know what it is with YOU PEOPLE and your inability to use the things correctly you purchase from this shop." "You People." Really? You mean tourists, divers, customers who rely on you and your store for quality products and who you rely on to... EAT? This is when I just simply leaned in over the counter, looked at him in the eyes and as cold as ice pointed out I own a publicity agency, have served scuba manufacturing clients and dive clubs for 15-years, and Hell Hath No Fury Than a Publicist Scorned. He then waved his hands in the air directly six inches from my face, menacingly, and shot back, practically spitting his words, "I am going to credit you just to get rid of you and I hope you never come back." I assured him I'd oblige. He continued to rant, rave and mutter disparaging remarks as he ran a credit against my card. I was shaking I was so furious at this crotchety old man, who obviously was fed up with his career and station in life and was long past his retirement. He was so frazzled, instead of issuing the credit, he ran a duplicate purchase charge for the almost $80 price of the item. I pointed out his mistake when he wanted me to sign off on the receipt and he fumed as he went back to the credit card device. He assured me he credited out his first mistake and then he returned with a receipt for the credit, which represented an incorrect credit amount of $5 and change. I pointed out his second mistake, and he returned fuming to the credit card device, eventually returning with a second receipt for the $70 of the credit balance. I signed off on both credits, thanked him politely as I could, turned and left. I passed the clerk I originally dealt with on the way out, as he was moving scuba tanks, and he sheepishly glanced at me with a look of "save me from this living Hell" and I could do nothing but shake my head at him, as if to say, "You should have stayed in school." Let me be clear. Bob Holston, owner of DIVE KEY WEST, is the number one reason why EVERYONE should shop elsewhere for any kind of dive equipment, trips, training and rental gear while on Key West. It's amazing that with that kind of attitude, this place doesn't have more damning reviews and is actually still in business. He is the meanest, most unprofessional, arrogant and condescending piece-of-xxxx I've ever met in my 40+ years diving. He hates his position, people, tourists and clearly acts like he was ready to get out of the game 15-years ago. Immediately after this incident I went directly to Divers Direct and purchased the Backscatter Flip for $134, $90 less than what I was quoted at DIVE KEY WEST, and I could not be happier with the item. Divers Direct also has a 'no questions asked' return policy on, from what I can tell, everything they sell, so they'll get my business from here on out. This company justly deserves my scorn and your scrutiny before you even spend dollar 1 in this shop. Avoid DIVE KEY WEST! read more

Execllent dive shop. Very helpful staff, very nice dive boat and great crew. We did a week of diving with them while in Key West this past November. We really liked the marina that the dive boat is docked at, which is a really short drive from their office. We rented their equipment (we brought our own mask, fins and snorkels), which was very well maintained. The first time we visited the office to go diving, they asked us to set up our equipment - most likely to see if we could do it ourselves, which we were more than willing to prove we could do. After that, we never had to set up anything, because the dive boat crew did it all. While on the dives, the dive boat crew did an amazing job of ensuring we were aware of the conditions and made sure that we could safely leave and get back to the boat. They also made sure that everyone had an ample warning device (dive sausage), so that they could spot us on the surface when we finished our dives. Here is what I wish they did in addition, which would make them a "super awesome" dive shop - Send a dive master with every group as a guide, so everyone can enjoy the reefs and wrecks. I know this is not common practice in Florida, but it should be considered as a no-cost option if divers want to stay with a guide or not and not be an extra charge. Plus, some of your crew can get in some extra dives ;) If you are planning to dive in Key West, I highly recommend Dive Key West. Out of all of the dive operations there, I really think they are the best choice. read more

Went there for Scuba. Day1 was cancelled due to weather(5-6ft waves), so they said take refund or we can try tomorrow, call 10AM tomorrow see weather, if not good condition, you can get refund. Called 10AM next day, they said, we dont know yet. I said tell me when you know. Called them back at 12pm for a 1pm tour, whats up, they said the 2-3ft waves only, we are good to go in boat. I said, what about visibility, they said, dont know. I said, cancel then right? They said, no refund only "rain check". Be careful of the weather and visibility. They will force you to go out even if the water is super murky with no more than 6-7ft of visibility. I have gopro videos to prove this. They will not refund claiming that the boat is going, we can write you a rain check come back again some other time. Well, I am visiting from across the country, cannot come back again and they dont have other locations where you can use their "rain check". We had a personal guide for me and my wife for $70 extra. The guide was also shared with another person, which is ok i guess. However, when going in the water, my wife needed a moment(~1mins) before descending to get over her fear. Instead of encouraging, the guide said we have to go NOW or you can get back on the boat. So much for a personal guide. Avoid if possible. Maui's extended horizon with one-legged Keith was the best Scuba experience we have had. I wish my future scuba experiences are better than this. read more

So Scuba Steve went to the Keys to get his SCUBA on, and dove with Dive Key West. This Scuba Steve adventure was pretty specific, went to the keys to dive some wrecks and the Vandenberg was at the top of the list for dives to do. Dive Key West was recommended to me by a friend and I am really glad I decided to go with them over some of the other options. I highly recommend this dive operation. One of the REALLY great things about Dive Key West is that when you dive with them you get access to the resort where their dive boat is tied up. This is a HUGE advantage for anybody that is not staying in Key West and just visiting for a day of diving. The resort offers GREAT shower facilities (all soap and shampoo included) so you can clean up after a half day of diving and spend the rest of your time playing around town. DIve Key West also provides an area to rinse your gear and leave it to dry while having lunch in Key West. Just remember to grab your stuff on the way out of town or before the store closes at 6 PM-ish. When diving with them it is obvious that safety is their TOP priority, which is always nice. The staff is fantastic, the Divemasters are knowledgeble and helpful. Their boat is really nice, and the on board fruit snack ice chest thing was really cool. NITROX 32 is available and I really recommend diving it on the Vandenberg. As for the Vandenberg I can only say WOW, what a great wreck, as a diver it should be on your bucket list of places to dive. The currents can get pretty strong but if you are lucky, like I was, you might see it on a no current day, which I had several of. If they would have allowed double dives on this one I would have given them five stars for sure. They limit the dives on the Vandenberg to one dive then a shallow reef dive for safety, and to protect some on the less experienced divers. I think if you have a group of verified advnaced divers with the necessary experience they would allow two dives on the Vandenberg but you are going to have to fill their boat with very experienced divers. read more

SUPER FRIENDLY owners and staff. Literally, every staff member went out of their way to make the trip stress free and fun. The gear and boat amenities were very good. They dock their boat at an upscale marina with shower facilities and a clubhouse that can be used after the dive, which was a nice plus. Top notch organization that is fun and professional at the same time. They are very focused on safety and are happy to work with any skill level. My fiancee did her open water check out dives with them while I did my first diving in 7 years. They made both of us feel comfortable and relaxed the whole trip. They are not the cheapest dive shop on the island but I think everything they do for you makes the extra cost worth every penny. While I was there they were doing their deeper/wreck dives in the morning with shallower reef dives (with snorkelers) in the afternoon and night dives a few times. They worked very well with the mixed group of divers and snorkelers. If you want something that a mixed family group can do together this is a great option. I have absolutely no hesitation about diving again with Dive Key West and would not look elsewhere if I come back down again. read more

I've never had a worse dive trip experience! The dives were shallow so they did no safety stop, and when we got back on board we changed out our tanks and were rushed right back into the water! No break. From the time we moored we were told we had one hour to get geared up and in the water, do our dive and get out and on our way. We usually came up with over 1000 pounds of air. The dive master, Henry, actually took down his huge camera set up and swam around taking pictures..... he actually touched and harassed the animals! He also bragged on board about making-out in his truck with some 21 year old girl he met and he's like in his 40's. He also cussed and gestured at us while driving over to the marina...he didn't know it was us and was upset in traffic. He was the most unprofessional dive crew member I ever met and the trip was a true disaster.!! I'll never go diving in FL again! The office staff were wonderful, as was Sam...another DM...but both Henry and a few of the other crew members were not friendly and seemed like they didn't even like their job. It was such a disappointing week! read more

Part of our 5 person crew in Key West last week included my boyfriends sister Andrea who loved diving but hasn't been able to do so in 7 years [her residing in London is part of what hinders this passion!]. An old colleague of hers [Tammy] and an avid diver herself, met us down in Key West for the first few days of our trip to join Andrea on a few diving excursions. Tammy spotted the Dive Key West shop near our hotel and made the arrangements for us all to go out on several dive trips during the first few days. Myself, my boyfriend and Andrea's husband are not divers and therefore we would just be snorkeling during the trip. We were afraid this would inconvenience their team of staff and the other divers, but I received no such impression from their staff nor the other great people out on the boat. All of the staff were super helpful and great with everybody. We allowed the divers to get situated in the water first before venturing out. Their boat staff would give the divers relevant info for their experience and would always ensure that we knew the best areas to snorkle as well. We were brought out to some great reefs, saw tons beautiful fish that often were nearly close enough to touch. Andrea went out for her first dive with one of their dive staff who got her comfortable again with diving and were very patient and gave her great tips. Overall our experience in Key West last week was one to be remembered, and the entire team at Dive Key West played a huge part in our very much enjoyed and successful trip. read more

We did our check out dives here right before Christmas. Our instructor was Kell, a very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly guy. We spent some time for completing the requirements, but most of it was spent for exploring around, looking at fishes and having a lot of fun. These guys are super nice, very helpful and professional. You're definitely going to have wonderful time with them. read more

Super impressed and glad we went with this crew. It was easy to book, the staff was courteous and professional, and the boat crew was organized, helpful, and knowledgeable. The dives themselves were incredible -- bunch of goliath groupers, a devil scorpionfish, barracudas, snook, tarpon, a massive moray, and even a manta ray that got super intrigued by us. We also appreciated the historical briefings and the complimentary snacks onboard. Awesome experience all around! read more

Good place for scuba diving. They prepare all gear for you, if you need to. Boat captain was nice. High performance place for scuba diving. Will be back for more. read more

Overpriced rip off! $18 to fill a nitrox tank is highway robbery. Will never return. To make the price worse, the owner defends it by stating the only other place in town charges the same price, and the price of fuel is higher in the keys. I pay $8 a fill in Jupiter Fl. $18 is just plain taking advantage of tourists. read more
