This was probably the bar that has the COOLEST entrance. We got there right at opening so didn't see the flag hanging so if you plan to visit this bar for pure Speakeasy ambiance, we recommend coming around 5:45. Once entering, hostess/waitress was extremely friendly and gave us great recommendations on their drinks. Drinks were very strong and we liked the fact that each drink had their own twist. As much as I don't want this place to get too popular, I have to give them some love on here. Hubby and I have found a new local hangout, and we love the quaint, laid-back atmosphere of this little speakeasy. We accidentally found it to be honest- asking a local walking by how to find the entrance, and only realizing it was a speakeasy after we were inside. Every drink we have ordered here has been phenomenal. The bartenders here have it dialed in for Real. The only drawback here are the high cost of drinks. I know the ingredients are all top shelf and high quality, but we can really only afford one drink here when we go. It's the sacrifice we make for just feeling relaxed and enjoyed the kitschy decor and laid back music, if only for one round. It's a nice little treat and a great way to end the day. Most people might find a speakeasy hidden in a donut shop to be a novelty or gimmick. Captain Gregory's is anything but a gimmick. They are serving some of the best cocktails I have had in the MDV area and I don't make that compliment lightly. They have some serious bartenders preparing some seriously deliciously curated cocktails. On my most recent visit we stopped in on a Sunday night and I was delighted to see that it was their experimental night when they remove the classic cocktails from the menu and replace them with three experimental ones. After chatting with the bartender Sam about the menu, I took his advice and tried the Regine's Dilemma. It was a gin infused with bay leaf, house made vermouth, and cedar leaves. While I find most of the drinks on their menu are sweet, this was a beautifully dry, balanced, and with a ton of complexity as the bay leaf introduced very unique, spicy notes in the drink that complimented the juniper and anis flavors of the gin. The drink was beautifully garnished with a branch of rosemary that added yet another dimension to the cocktail. I enjoyed every sip! After chatting with Sam a while about cocktails and some of the new concepts he is working on, I asked him to make me whatever cocktail he wanted for my next drink. He kindly obliged and delivered an amazing Allspice Old Fashioned. I am a huge bourbon fan and he made an exceptional Old Fashioned variant that was actually one of the best I have ever had. He didn't tell me the entire recipe, but it was exceptionally well balanced, boozey, with beautiful citrus notes and a spicy finish that came from the allspice. I also loved that he used Peychaud's bitters to add a bit of sweetness to the drink as well. It was served in an Old Fashioned glass with a single large ice cube, which to me is the perfect way to serve this drink. I am now craving another one just writing this review! Aside from the fantastic cocktails, Captain Gregory has a very cool and intimate decor. It is obviously has a sailor's tavern motif with dim lighting and cozy table areas. The bar features just six barstools and backed by a wall of carefully chosen bottles of liquor. The menu changes daily and I can only recall a few drinks like "Abandoned Apartment in Paris" that continue to stay on the menu. They also feature a few food items as well including sliders, some delectable sweet desserts, and donuts of course! Captain Gregory is now on my list of favorite cocktails bars in the MDV area. If you are into creative, curated, and unique cocktails inspired by some of the great classics like the Flip and Manhattan, Vieux Carre, or Papa Dobles Daiquiri then you will appreciate the delightful elixirs being crafted here. Be still my geeky heart! The fact that Captain Gregory's is kind of this secret, tucked away in a little doughnut shop, made me a tad too excited. Upon arrival, we, and the party ahead of us, kind of stood around clueless waiting to enter. As novices, we weren't hip to pulling the flag for entry, but we finally figured it out, lol. We arrived early for our reservation, which I was nervous about, but the host was so very accommodating and didn't even mention it. We headed through the "secret" door and were seated promptly. Thus began our magical evening. The menu is small plates and the beverages are craft. The chef was outstanding; our party sang his praises, and there was not one one person who did not enjoy their food and/or beverage selection. The Pork Belly, which I typically wouldn't touch, was delicious! So incredibly flavorful with a wonderful, smokiness. The Grits the Pork Belly was served on were some of the best I've ever eaten, The Scallops were cooked to perfection, perfectly seared and seasoned. The Brussel Sprouts would be enjoyed by even the pickiest of eaters. I could've eaten seconds or thirds of everything! The seating area is small, call ahead for large parties. ALWAYS make a reservation, save yourself the hassle. Food was priced typically for the area, beverages were about $15. Service was amazing, food and drinks were amazing, and it's a hidden gem! Awful just AWFUL. They were not accommodating at all during our time there last night. It's truly sad because last year we came during Christmas and it was wonderful. This year, awful. The waiter and hostess were EXTREMELY rude. They couldn't accommodate our 5 people guest (when it was completely empty) and then after held a grudge the entire time we were there. Ignored us, rude, and didn't take our order until we finally grabbed someone to tell them we were ready. We finally ended up leaving because we were being treated terribly. Merry Christmas right?? I would love for the Manager to contact me to discuss this awful experience. Until then, I will tell everyone I know to never give this place the time of day. Responding to manager: We did not treat the staff "poorly". We didn't even have a chance to speak to anyone because no one saw us because we were being ignored! The staff was treating us poorly! My boyfriend and I came here for a belated birthday celebration and it did not disappoint! The door was so inconspicuous that I didn't know I had passed it until the person in Sugar Shack pointed me towards it - definitely added to the fun and "exclusive" (but not snobby at all!) vibe. Because I had written in open table when making the reservation that we were celebrating a birthday, they had champagne waiting for us at our seats when we arrived. Such a nice touch! We each had two drinks (can't remember the names unfortunately) but they were very unique and delicious. And strong! When you check in on Yelp, you get a coupon for a free donut as well which is awesome! We had the red velvet cake donut and it was delicious. We went to dinner elsewhere so unfortunately we didn't get to taste their menu but we will definitely be back to check it out. I love, love, love, Captain Gregory's Speakeasy and am so happy we were finally able to go back inside again....seeing the wall slide back and the welcoming smile of the staff just can't be beat....the outdoor patio during COVID has been nice, but not really that speakeasy feeling. My husband and I were last at Captain Gregory's for their Mezcal Tasting event and originally thought we were going to settle with another fun night on the patio, but the crazy storm played into our favor and since we didn't cancel our reservation when others did, we were able to sit inside the speakeasy at the bar. This was my hands down favorite visit because we were able to talk to the mixologists behind the bar and inquire on various cocktail ingredients and creative style of each drink. We had so much fun. I'm also a Maine native; so seeing the story of Captain Gregory on the wall always makes me smile in memory of my home state. I'm so glad when we came to what was Sugar Shack Donuts back in 2018 that I saw someone pull the flag on the wall and then like magic, the wall slid back. I remember saying to the staff at Sugar Shack (now Elizabeth's Counter) what is that place?! They laughed and said it is Captain Gregory's, a speakeasy....I was like, say what?!! I knew I had to visit and my husband and I made our first reservation a couple months later. It was really not worth the trip to Alexandria to drink a few cocktails. The drinks are overpriced, along with having to make a $ reservation to get in. I felt rushed after all of that. They give you a last call at 30 minutes before your reservation ends. You still have the wait staff returning to speed up your leaving process even though your 30 minutes is not up. It was strange to me that they did this when you are trying to enjoy your half full drink. I like the idea of it all, but don't like the pressure I felt when I was trying to enjoy a stress free evening out. The food selection was definitely not my style for bar snacks either. read more

Totally worth the wait and every penny!! The BEST speakeasy in town. I went there twice with my boyfriend, we spent $150 and loved it! I recommend driving as it's a far walk from the waterfront (took us 20 minutes) and plenty of parking and make reservations. We didn't make reservations and waited an hour in the donut shop, which has a small waiting area (unfortunately the shop is closes at 10, so you can't have a donut as you wait). The 2nd time we made reservations online - beware there is a $25 fee/person if you don't show up. Captain Gregory is flexible in changing reservations through text. Once you get inside, it's intimate and cozy with a nautica theme. The cocktails and donuts are amazing and the service measures up. Can't remember the drinks we had - both they were good and the drink specials change periodically. We got free donuts the 2nd time around - there were the end of the night leftovers. I'm a sucker for speak easys. I think they are so fun and love fancy cocktails. I have tried to get into captain Gregory's a few times before we were able to get in. So if you want to come here I would highly recommend planning ahead of time and making a reservation. I don't know anyone who gets in from the list they make of people to call if reservations don't show up. When you get there, don't be like me and just knock really loud, pull the flag to the right of the door. They were good sports but I felt dumb! The cocktails were super good. I had a gin drink (can't remember the name /:) that everyone at the table loved and an old fashioned which was the best drink my table ordered. Be prepared to spend a bit. Most of the cocktails are $15 or more. Our drink bill actually ended up being the same price as our dinner bill was later in the night but it was worth it. Overall a good experience but definitely mixed feelings about our time here. The ambience of the bar is very fun and cozy, the food surprised us being the best part of our time there. The drinks were fine. They are good but I feel like if they were slightly cheaper I wouldn't think anything of it. You can definitely get much better cocktails in metro area for the same price point...Service was also a mixed bag. It took awhile for someone to respond to the flag pulling, then were asked to wait, then were asked if we wanted bar seating instead of table seating. We could have waited longer for a table but we opted for the bar. I was a tad disappointed that I made a reservation and paid the kind of annoying and unnecessary reservation fee and notated that we were celebrating for a special occasion and then had to wait a good 15 min just to be asked to sit not where we reserved. The bartender was nice, but drinks did take awhile. We had to order our last round twice because it got forgotten all while the staff were hanging out while starting cleaning up and even arguing about stuff at one point in front of us? Very weird. I went to Resy, provided screenshots that showed it wasn't communicated, and my messages with the screenshots were read but not replied to. It's been days. Not great customer service. I have to say the chef and bartenders take the utmost pride in their art. Here food, beverage and atmosphere go hand and hand Captain Gregory's is excellent for any occasion. The Pine Smoked Old FashionEd and After the Gold Rush are a must try for any Whiskey lover. They even have a dessert cocktail menu, I tried the Pugs and Uggs. The painstaking attention to each detail in each beverage is hard to find in any bar and they have it hands down. The chef and food menu is sooo creatively pleasing it is more like a 5 star restaurant in a bar. I was totally impressed with the level of culinary skill applied to each dish right down the platings excellent taste and attention to detail! Bravo Captain Gregory's Bravo!!! This is a Hidden Gem for Speak-Easy connoisseurs. If you like skilled drinks... GREAT. Staff is professional and friendly. If you like Food... not so great... the selection is VERY small... but what they do have is delicious. My only con is the size. Pre-COVID this place was tiny and crowded. Post Covid they have 3 inside seats. I have not explored patio yet, but they do have it. I've visited this location pre and during COVID and had an excellent time during both occasions. The cocktails are always an adventure that I definitely recommend for anyone who frequents cocktail bars. We were able to dine outside in the Alley about a month ago when indoor dining wasn't allowed. They were very attentive and diligent about cleaning spaces for guests, social distancing, and limiting parties to 4 or fewer. Reservations are recommended during normal times but are a must during covid, as they have limited seating and timed appointments. read more

Honestly, it's a speakeasy inside of a donut shop. What else can you ask for? That's literally like...perfection. Drinks are stiff but yummy, bartenders are some of the chillest people with some seriously awesome tales. It has been some time since I have been to a speakeasy, but this place is definitely a place to check out. It is tucked away inside a donut shop and as soon as you walk in, it is the wall to the right. That is a string with a bell attached to the door and that is how you get in. I was struggling at first to figure it out. Luckily, I was able to find it without any embarrassment. The donuts at the donut shop are super good by the way and it is the perfect dessert for the drinks here. Anyways, the downside is the reservation system as it is hard to near impossible to change or cancel your reservation. I wanted to adjust it, but after several days of trying, we couldn't alter the reservation even when it was a couple of days out. Anyways, the drinks were worth all the hassle. They were well balanced in taste and alcohol that it was enjoyable to drink and I did not feel the alcohol in any of the drinks I had. The ones that I have tasted were not overly sweet where the sugar would alter the flavor of whether or not I tasted the alcohol. Thus, the quality of cocktails are top notch and I always look for this quality in my cocktails. The inside is quite small and cramp, but that's what makes this place charming in a sense. I've been to some of the most highly rated cocktail bars in NYC and Chicago and this place is as good as it gets. Granted-- tonight was my first time there but between me and my husband we tried 5 cocktails and got one donut and everything was outstanding. We learned they rotate themes about every 6 weeks and currently they are on a Tiki theme, so a lot of the drinks were rum-based. Everything was delicious. I especially appreciated the frequency of toasted/caramelized items that accentuated the drinks (eg cinnamon stick, plantain). Service was great - very attentive and friendly, gave lots of information about the alcohol and the bar itself. Atmosphere is cool and a legit speak-easy vibe. Will definitely return. In my most recent trip, my favorite was the Up With The Full Moon its made with Rye, Amaro, Averna, Espresso and Burnt Sugar. It was so good that I had to get two of them, and pair this delicious coffee cocktail with a maple bacon donut and you've got a match made in heaven. Got a voicemail letting me know that they won't be charging me credit card. OpenTable was a pain as their support team kept saying that I should "refresh the web" when I couldn't make the cancellation using their mobile app. And they refused to assist stating that the restaurant's policy required direct email communication. Adjusted the score to 3 stars, but this was way too much effort for a reservation modification and cancellation. *********** Nonresponsive to my emails all week regarding the inability to increase the number of guests on my reservation on OpenTable. OpenTable states to contact them directly, and so I emailed them THREE times... but they still haven't responded. There's no phone number.... OpenTable says that I have until today to cancel, and yet the platform won't allow me to cancel. And so it looks like they are going to charge my credit card because I can't cancel by OpenTable because their platform requires directly "communicating with the restaurant", and CG's won't respond regarding increasing the number of my party. read more

How to get in - to be very clear: enter Sugar Shack, on the wall to the right there is a flag on a rope. Pull it downward, and it pulls up the counterweight on the other side of the door, letting them know you have arrived. Someone will open the door in about 30s-60s to greet you. Drinks - Honestly, really good cocktail menu. They say that the menu rotates (I think weekly) but we had such a good set of drinks, I almost wish I could come back and be assured the same thing! Pine Smoke Old Fashioned was really, really good. Snacks - Again, very good. We only tried the Crab Hushpuppies since we were going out to dinner after. Interior - Pirate themed but not obnoxiously so. The coasters have the carving of a kraken on them, the silverware is old school looking, like you might find in a shipwreck. Neat touches. The inside is pretty small and borders on cramped. We didn't mind it for two people, but I can see how a party of more than 3 would have to make reservations well in advance to get the only large table in the back. Also, they make you exit through the back and not through the "secret" door. That's kind of... annoying, following a couple of winding hallways in the back of a restaurant to be dumped into the Lost Dog Cafe patio area. Price - A bit high. Cocktails were about $15-$16, although they don't skimp on the booze. I think maybe the $12 range is more appropriate. I work next to the Michelin-starred Fiola resturant downtown, and their cocktails are $16-$18. So yes, even for DC, these prices are on the very high end (and Captain Gregory's isn't in DC...). I was a bit surprised to be spending over $100 after tax and tip for a small plate of hushpuppies and four drinks. This is where they lose the 5 star rating for me. Conclusion - This place is a great "special occasion" spot, the prices would keep you from coming back with any amount of frequency. I'm leaving it at 4 stars because the drinks were frankly just really good - there's usually some aspect of a specialty cocktail that I don't like, too bitter or something, and this was just executed well with great service. Comparison/Alternatives - This place is far better than another speakeasy, PX in Old Town, which I found to be uncomfortable (chairs without backs, etc) with bad drinks. However if you're willing to travel into DC, I think Harold Black beats this Captain Gregory's because of the superior ambiance. read more

This was our first time dining and we will definitely be back. We tried several cocktails and they all had fantastic names. Our waitress made great recommendations based on what we preferred for taste. We tried the oysters to start with and found them so amazingly fresh and delicious, served in individual oyster shaped dishes. Next up were the scallops that were perfectly cooked. We rounded out the meal with the burrata that was served with some delicious grilled bread. The burrata was melt in your mouth creamy. We ended with dessert and opted for a donut and panna cotta. A phenomenal gem of a speakeasy that's very welcome in Alexandria. This is a secret speakeasy located in Sugar Shack. Pull the flag. The interior is nautical-themed which is pretty unusual for a speakeasy but endearing nonetheless. Like many similar locations, this place is small and intimate - don't expect to bring a huge crowd. The drinks here are superb. The liquor collection alone is impressive, but what they do with it is significantly more important. The drinks change daily, meaning it's hard to recommend anything in particular, but everything I tried was - without exception - delicious. Definitely give this place a shot! read more

Price place with $15 cocktails but it was fun! Pulling the whiskey flag to get in and being greeted by our server gave a fun and special vibe. The place is small and my husband made reservations in advance. My husband had a cocktail with an egg white in it, and he loved it. My first drink was a cider which tasted like musty mothballs and like you were drinking an old person's bodily fluid (I am not kidding!), and I took the server up on her offer to get me something else because it was not drinkable. The bartender came over with a sparkling wine and said he would not recommend the cider without a food pairing which made me wonder why the server endorsed it in the first place but oh well. My replacement drink was tasty with my sugar shack donut. They lose a star for the price of their cocktails but I guess they gotta do what they gotta do to stay in business? read more
