OMG!!! We had SUCH a blast on Rocket Boat SF the other day. It was a totally spontaneous ride as I had a coupon for it that expired that day. We were first in line and sat at the front left of the boat not knowing what to expect but were totally excited all the same! They whooped us around near Fisherman's Wharf, passed the Embarcadero, near the AT&T park, under the Bay Bridge and in the East Bay waters. Gorgeous views at high speeds, wind in the hair, and we were screaming our heads off with glee and pure joy!! I tried out Rocket Boat at Pier 39. You can buy tickets at the stand for Blue & Gold Ferry, they have some small signs for the Rocket Boat. Tickets are high: $27 for adult; kids 5-11 $19; Junior 12-18 $23 & seniors 65+ $23, I had passes so I didn't pay. It was 1:40pm and they said the next boat was 2:45pm and told me to line up at Gate 4. Well, the line is a little bit further away from gate on the Right and had to wait about 1hr to get on the boat. Boat can hold 100 people, if it's full then you gotta wait for the next boat. Got to be in line 30 minutes before departure. You can pick up the Emergency Poncho and I recommend you wear it because you do get wet! Even with the poncho you will get wet, your face, hair, hat, sunglasses, glasses, clothes. Not crazy drenched, but still annoying wet. It's salty Bay water so wash your glasses and don't bother keeping the poncho unless you rinse it off. You start off slow, then some crazy turns, go under a bit of the Bay Bridge, slow down for some picture taking, then they speed up more and you get wet, then back. Only a 30 minute boat ride so pretty short. Glad I did it once, The rest of the ticket stub you can keep and if you have friends/family that want to try it, you can give them your ticket stubs so they get 1/2 off their tickets. Great experience overall! Awesome and cool ride. My expectations weren't really met. I anticipated getting trashed around and soaking wet but no! I'd seen people with ponchos and one would think you'd get soaked from head to toe. I even sat in the front, which was suggested as the wettest spot of the ride. The deckhands were excellent tour guides. They kept everyone engaged and overall, made the tour a fun experience. Worth trying at least once in your lifetime, maybe not twice. You board at Pier 39 and it takes you all the way to the back of AT&T Park. The boat stations there for pictures and such. Then turns back to port. Overall, I was expecting a faster, longer ( only about 30 minutes) and wetter ride. Look for discounts where offered. The adult ticket price is around $27. A Groupon used to float around for this place back in the day. I had mixed reactions after my ride. Maybe my expectations were just too high to begin with. My initial opinion when I first saw the boat was that of disdain. As a local, I scoffed at the idea of tourists opting for something so strange in a bay full of sailboats but scratch my arrogance. I am always finding ways to entertain my friends when they come to visit so after a while, I run out of ideas other than the typical journey out to the Embarcadero and other piers. I looked around and shopped the Rocket Boat idea to my friends and they actually were quite excited. That being said, I bit my tongue and purchased three tickets, one for myself. Purchase your tickets online so that you do not have to wait in line with the rest of the tourists, which can sometimes be 20 people deep. The rides run every hour so make sure you make your schedule before you head toward Pier 39. One word : FUN Well, make a believe out of me, but I have not had that much adrenaline-induced fun in a long time. The ride is for about 30 minutes and at speeds of 45 mph, the switchbacks out on the water and sudden braking/acceleration moments made my hair stand on end, not to mention getting drenched from the ocean spray. I would highly recommend bringing your GoPro's protected in a casing and leave your cameras and smartphones tucked away, unless you are looking forward to dealing with saltwater damage. And remember that they offer waterproof ponchos before the ride, you just have to request them. OR, wear a waterproof jacket. We ended up going to the Walgreen's across the street for babywipes so that I could wipe away the brine starting to form on my face. Great ride! read more

4th of July weekend Good times!!! Even if you're a local... you simply must take this tour... at least once. It's by far one of the better ways to view the city... at a high rate of speed! I feel the need, the need for SPEED.........and getting drenched. Okay maybe not the latter, but I guess on a rare hot summer day in SF, a ride on the Rocket Boat might be what you just need. It's a short 30 min tour but it doesn't get any better than cruising around the bay at more than 80mph!! Sit more towards the back if you want to get soaked, but regardless of where you're sitting, you're going to get splashed with water. It normally costs around $24, but if you search online you can probably find discounted deals up to half off which is what I did. I will preface this by saying that I've been skydiving 7 times, so the fear of... anything, has left me long ago. I will add that everyone on line in front of us, including my wife and stepson were scared of and concerned that this rode might be a bit too much. It's not. I was hoping they'd be right and I'd be wrong. It's an exciting time, it's a guarantee that you'll get wet, despite the fact that they say you won't. I'd definitely wear the plastic bag again. Not because of the wet factor but on account of the Bay water smells of death factor. I've been wanting to do this ever since I heard there was a Rocket Boat in SF! I looked up prices and it's not too bad $25 for 30 min of speed and adrenaline out on the SF Bay but I've spotted deals before on Goldstar.com for half the price. Well, I was shopping around on Groupon a couple of months back, and I spotted it, a deal for $13 for the Rocket Boat! Sold! Now to find the perfect day to go. Rocket Boat operates Wed - Sun throughout the day starting at 12:30pm and the last departure at 6pm - There are no reservations taken and seats are first come first serve so if you want your choice of seats, get in line early. My Groupon was set to expire in a couple of weeks and temperatures in San Francisco were getting into the upper 80's at the beginning of October so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to go on the Rocket Boat and cool off on the SF Bay. From the website, they say If you want to get wet, sit towards the back. The front and middle seats tend to stay drier. I decided, I didn't want to be completely soaked, so I sat in the second row from the front. As you strap yourself in and secure all your belongings (hat, sunglasses anything that may fly off at high speeds) rock music blasts from the speakers getting you in the mood for a wild ride out on the bay. The Rocket Boat takes you out on the bay from Pier 39, out under the Bay Bridge and to McCovey Cove and back in 30 minutes. On a sunny day, especially one of our rare warm ones, this is a great way to cool off. But even on a cool day, bring a layer and you'll be alright. It was an awesome time! Yes, I haven't had such crazy fun thrill since I was in my 20s with a roller coaster ride. So, since my child likes speed and boat, we decided to give a try. I've been on other Blue & Gold Fleet cruises, but this is by far, the one with the most fun. I didn't think it would be that exciting when I was purchasing tickets; I thought it would just be a nice speed boat that takes you around the bay, but it was just that with 5x more thrill. It was definitely a thrill going on the bay at approx. 55 mph and doing "donut' spins in the water. They do stop the ride half way to give you a small "tour"/briefing on San Francisco landmarks. Don't expect this ride to be a tour though, the briefing was VERY BRIEF (2-3 minutes). The rest of the time, you can expect to enjoy a beautiful view of the bay from all angles. The route is never the same, but similar most of the time. On days of Giants games, they bring you somewhat close to AT&T park/McCovey's Cove for an up-close look at the ballpark. My only complaint was the that ride could have been a bit longer. They say the ride is approx. 30 minutes, but that's including the 5 minutes to drive out of the pier, and the 5 minutes to drive back into the pier. Therefore, the actual time spent at bay was only 20 minutes, not to mention the 2 - 3 minute downtime for their little "briefing". Don't think the only people getting a kick out of this ride is old folks, either. I'm almost 18 and my girlfriend is 18 and we both enjoyed it. TIPS: - When buying your tickets, buy them online! Their website has web-only fares that are a bit cheaper than buying them in person at the kiosk. If you have access to a computer with internet, use it! After paying online, you can pickup your ticket any day you want to ride at the self-serve kiosk, where they print your tickets out. -Keep your ticket stubs after they ripped the other end! The kind crew told us that the stubs is good for 90 days and if you ever want to ride the other Blue & Gold Fleet rides, you get a hefty discount. Or, you can ride Rocketboat again for just $11! Not bad, considering I paid $18 per person for the online price! -Sit in the front for the best thrill. I sat in the 2nd row from the front, a seat from the railing, and I barely got wet, just a small splash of seawater. Keep in mind; I rode the 4:30 ride on a somewhat windy day. -Arrive early to get good seats. They leave the pier within a minute or 2 after stated departure time. read more

Even though the weather wasn't in our favor we still decided to give this a try and it was worth FREEZING for. The power on this beast is REAL considering how many people were on it. My gf and I were looking forward on riding on the Rocket Boat because we figured we would sight see and go fast at the same time. We actually got a bundle deal. We got a ticket for this ride and a ticket for the Blue & Gold fleet ferry for $25 each. It was a great deal. The line wasn't long at all, we boarded on quickly, and the driver and the announcer were both friendly and funny. The ride itself went by fast. It felt more like twenty-minutes and not thirty. The boat did go pretty fast at times and made some cool sharp turns. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't go over by the Golden Gate bridge. I came down to the wharf yesterday when I had a cousin from Kansas visiting. We were going to have lunch and then go on a bay cruise of some sort but saw this and thought we would give it a try. The best part is it's NOT just for tourists, I have been to Fisherman's Wharf a million times and this was a new experience that I would do again in a heartbeat!!!! The boat is pretty big and seats about 60 people or so. The tickets you buy are general admission so make sure you line up about 20 minutes before your desired departure time. If you don't want to get wet sit in the front and/or ask for a plastic poncho, they will give it to you for free. We sat on the right side of the boat about 5 rows back and barely got any water on us. The driver took us out under and past the Golden Gate Bridge and then down on the backside of Alcatraz. The view you get of the city from out on the water is unbeatable! I think the price you pay for the ride is pretty decent as well. Wow. Totally wasn't expecting this Rocket Boat thing to be incredibly fun or anything, but it was actually a blast. I just wished it was more than 30 minutes because it went by so fast and it seemed like there wasn't too much "touring." Unfortunately, they were prohibited to take us to the Golden Gate Bridge, so that was a bummer. Also, I was bummed that it didn't take us around Alcatraz.... My boyfriend and I got on, wearing the ponchos provided, buckled our seat belts, and ready to ride! Since the weather was all crazy (cloudy, misty rain), there were only 7 passengers on board, so it was pretty awesome -- we were able to see everything. Once the ride began, the speed kept increasing and there were moments when I had to hold onto my boyfriend and the gripping thing because I felt like I was gonna slide. It was so challenging trying to take pictures while we were going because my hair was all over the place, I was trying not to slide, and my camera was getting misty. Our driver was awesome because he was trying to catch big waves and figure 8s. The tour guides were awesome as well --- goofy guys! Definitely a must do! You don't get crazy wet --- just mist from the water --- and it's just straight up awesome, with rock music playing the whole time, unless the tour guides talked about a particular spot, like the AT&T Park (where we stopped and talked about the San Francisco Giants). I'm a local, but I love playing tourist. Its funny, you don't see/do half the things that a tourist does when you live in the area, and you just take things for granted. I wasn't expecting much here. I enjoy boats, the family had one when I was kid, though high school. I've had jet skis and sea-doos, I just really enjoy being on the water. Some online coupons became avail, so a big group of us locals all decided to make a day of it in the city, and check out some of the touristy bits. We board the boat, and immediately the driver barks at one of the workers on the boat. She was pleasant to the passengers (the clients), but when you're barking at a deckhand over the PA, we can all hear you. The boat roars to life, and we pull out of dock. Do we a little 360 just as we get out of the pier, probably a show for the folks on the land to try and get them to spend some money, its all s show : ) The driver has either been doing this for a while, or the boats are just really well built. The ride was a blast!! These things have 3,000HP, and when you're on the water, you need that kind of power to move a boat as big as this, and make it feel fast. This thing does feel fast. And it turns and "drifts" like a champ. It felt like my old sea-doo, only with a ton of people next to me. Yeah, it feels like it can turn that well. I'm sure this is part of the ride, but the driver made a quick right left, and water came flying into the boat. They had mentioned that you'd get some splash on you, and I was sitting on the far edge, but half of me got hit pretty good. And the water in the bay is definitely salty! We do a few speed blasts towards the bridge, do a little left right action, do some 180s, 360s, etc. We went out under the bridge, but never really got close to any other "attraction". Meaning we didn't get close to any island nor the ball park. I was expecting to get close to the embarcadero, we didn't. The pier where the boat docks is as close to the GGB as you'll get. Despite the long line and waiting for almost 2 hours for the next ride, me, my siblings and my parents had a BLAST on this ride! Great view of the city from afar and of course a great view of the Bay Bridge. Captain Max (or Matt, sorry lol), Julius and Zander were great hosts for the boat rides. The reviews by other Yelpers sum things up but I noticed that no one mentioned that before you get on the boat a few Asian teens take your pic. (See photos.) So after riding Rocket Boat I got both a pic and a refrigerator magnet! I forget whether I paid a token amount or whether it was part of the package. The pic is Kodak quality - not digital. Looks great. If you want to bounce up and down - like at an amusement ride - you're better off going on a day when the weather is bad and there are lots of waves. I took a day off from work to enjoyed a personal holiday with a friend and Rocket Boat was a perfect highlight for our date. After rocketing we visited the Aquarium and enjoyed a meal in North Beach. Horrible experience! Heard an announcement on one of their other vessels. Then got overcharged 20% more per ticket at the ticket booth. She said the price "just" went up. I tried to push the issue that we were quoted a lower price, and she didn't want to hear it. The bad experience didn't end there. After waiting 30 min in line on the dock for the rocket boat to depart, they canceled the ride due to "mechanical issues". No one ever appeared to board the boat and have any issues. I'm assuming not enough people were in line so they canceled the ride. A few min later they announced the next ride definitely wouldn't be canceled. How would you know what.... Just not very professional. I'm sure the boat ride is great, just very unprofessional and customer service is non existent. Didn't even try to do the right thing. read more
