Had a great time here watching an acoustic performer (one of the bartenders actually) and then a Stones tribute band (Blushing Brides). Beer selection is decent. We didn't eat but several people did and seemed happy. Service can be tough when they get busy and the place is hotter than hell when it gets packed inside! Still we had a great time here. I was here for a bachelorette trip this past weekend and came here on a Thursday night. The band who played was fantastic but the bartenders were absolutely atrocious. They were incredibly rude and condescending. When I politely asked for a vodka lemonade, I was completely ridiculed because apparently I "don't tell people what to do and need to ask". It was extremely bizarre and honestly ruined my night. Not to mention we were spending a lot of money here with 11 people in my party. Place is terrible. They charge a $10 cover and the place is truly a dump. Ordered drinks and then asked how I was paying, stated cash and then they tried to overcharge me $10 thinking I would not catch it. This happened twice, no doubt they were trying to pocket extra cash. The Bathroom appeared to have not been cleaned since 2 summers ago. We waited an hour for bar service. Owner was rude to surrounding customers for no reason. After an hour of no service, we purchased beer across the street at the grocery store thinking it was okay. Then when we cracked open a beer, they magically appeared out of nowhere and took our drinks and poured them out in front of us. We ordered food from Poor Peoples Pub in the meantime. When a group of accomplished girls gets together for a ladies weekend celebrating one's engagement, one cannot do things half-way. Thus, off we were to experience all that Block Island had to offer in the way of dining, entertainment, shopping, beaches, and relaxation. We ventured into Captain Nick's as a group of 10 tipsy, giggling girls happy to experience the locally reknowned musical stylings of the Booze Beggars. Color us astounded. While we weren't quite sure what to make of the horror-movie masks and Cotton-eyed Joe style dancing, we had a surprisingly lovely time. Located in a Victorian style building, Captain Nick's features an open downstairs with a bar along one wall and a small stage centered along the other. The stage can also be observed from a wrap around loft space circling the perimeter of the second story. Drinks were quite affordable - given the overall priciness of the Block's offerings - and delivered quickly by scrambling bartenders. The bartenders and patrons were all friendly and featured a good mix of full-time residents, part-time Blockers and vacationers. Ages ranged from early twenties to well into the fifties. Casual atmosphere. If I ever make it back to the Block, I'd definitely come back. read more

Everyone raves about the sushi, and I think it is awesome home made sushi. Which means, it is not professional sushi that you would get at Blue Ribbon or Nobu, but it is great homemade sushi. The fish is very fresh, (daily caught I am guessing,) the rolls are huge. On the sushi snob side: Way too much rice in the roll, over stuffed, lack of some of those type of professional sushi chef touches. BUT it is very good sushi and homemade is great too! If you are a professional sushi snob, don't go, but if you want some great fresh fish being thrown together by some locals in a roll, its worth it and the price is awesome. Aside from that, we asked for a mind eraser shot inside and he told us he was too busy for shots. I have to be honest, I was behind the bar for years, it takes me about 5 seconds longer to throw a mind eraser together than it does to pour a draft, so I think that was a douche move. It was busy, but not out of control busy and certainly not NYC bar busy where they thank you for spending the $$ on a mind eraser. So, I don't like bars where I wait my turn and than they tell me my drink is too hard to make. (BTW, mind eraser is kahlua, vodca and soda water, not rocket science) The short guy inside was just being an ass IMO. So, I won't go there if I am looking to do mix drinks. read more

Captain Nick's was the place to be on a Monday night for the local workers! Disco Night was one of the highlights of my week! I hardly ever went out on a weekend because of the crowds of tourists that would swarm the bars, but you can find the same people at Nick's every Monday night. My one gripe about Disco Night? The disco music stopped at midnight and they continued to play Top 40 after that... which isn't really a deal breaker for me, but I mean, come on, it's DISCO NIGHT. If I wanted Top 40, I would have gone to McGovern's Yellow Kittens for WGW... but that's a different review. Anyway, they tend to offer live music on a regular basis. You can be outside on the deck area, but the main dancing area is inside. It does tend to get a bit crowded as the night goes on, and I don't recall ever paying a cover... if I have, it's never been more than $5 because my eyes would have bugged out of my head if that were the case. I hate paying cover fees. They break my heart. OMG, I almost forgot about the sushi! Now, I haven't been to their sushi nights in about 2 summers... but they had "Sushi Bob" come over from the mainland to make sushi on the weekends for dinner. Nothing overly gourmet or anything. Only giant rolls were offered. GIANT. You got about 10 pieces per roll, costing approx $10-15 (including money for the tip bucket). You could even get a dinner plate with a pile of seaweed salad for about $5, and it wasn't the stringy kind of salad, but the kind with big leaves (?) of seaweed. I always wanted to order it in addition to my roll, but 4 out of 5 times they would sell out of their stock for the night by the time I got there since I'd go after work. I'm salivating just thinking about how good it all was. Baha. Overall, I definitely think this is a place worth checking out, whether it's for sushi or to just dance and unwind! read more

Dear Captain Nicks, I dont quite remember the time I spent with you EXACTLY but I do remember loving it. Good band was blaring and the dance floor was full. My friend and I were there for the weekend and were being shown around by two BI natives (I was single one time) and they were sure to take us here. It was as if the whole island was in this bar. So many people, so many drinks... such fun. The outside seating is clutch. I will return with every trip to BI. read more

Absolutely terrible. Watered down drinks, dirty surroundings and a staff that was rude and not welcoming. The new owners have taken away the allure of the old captain nicks. We met the owner, acting as a bouncer, at the front door. He was rude and obnoxious and had the personality of a grapefruit. I told him we have been on the island for 25 years for usually 8-10 weeks and Nicks was one of our all time favorites. He said it's a $10 cover charge and if you don't like go elsewhere. I have told everyone on island, those coming here and anyone that would listen - stay away from captain nicks!!! What a complete "loser". We will never go back. The guy making the food offered to make an off-menu veggie burger just in case anyone was vegetarian in the group. I think he may have just made up this recipe but let me tell you this was the best veggie burger I've ever had (7 years veg life). Don't know what his name was but he should get a promotion. All of us had a good time until the bouncer on the stage told us "no gays" and then asked us to "move away". We then proceeded to move off the stage and leave shortly after. Some guy on the dance floor made Racial comments to my son-in-law about himself (ethnicity) & about my daughters (he said they were whores). He did not only say it to him once, he repeated it. My son-in-law offered the man $100 bill to go away and dance with some girl. They guy would not go away. When the bouncers were made aware of this; the guy with the hat was allowed to stay & bouncers acted as if it was no big deal. We have been visiting the island for 20+ years because our family has a house here. I never turn to yelp & I've never left a place of business because of racism. We decided to leave because things would have went to another level if we did not! To me this is unfortunate!!!!!!!!! Captain Nick's is one of the few places on Block Island that has air conditioning. I'll let that soak in (like a sweat drenched tee shirt) for a moment... Ok! In addition to coolness, this place is an island landmark. Take a look at the photos on the walls when you get a chance. Went on a Tuesday night, "piano night" talented guy could sing & play ANYTHING, everyone was Into it. My beer was $4.50, which was 1/2 the price of what I was paying that afternoon on the beach. If you're expecting ritzy, might not be your thing. .. So went to nicks last night. Had the bartender named Bailey tell me to go F myself because I asked her to stop screaming in my face. That's the third bartender there to treat me horribly.. Out of 3. And watch out for Sarah charging you for drinks you don't get. Apparently if you're not in there 5 days a week all season long you don't deserve the time of day or any adequate service. There's only like 3 bars on the island open past ten, but if you find yourself there be wary of the staff. read more

This place was a fun end to our night after having dinner next door at Poor People's Pub and then walking around town. My husband, sister, and brother in law went in for the piano bar night and we were very content. The staff at the door who were carding were very friendly and polite upon entering and the vibe was extremely relaxed and casual upstairs. We played checkers and chess out of beach wood and stones on comfy couches while listening to a very talented pianist sing covers of songs ranging from Elton John to James Taylor to Art Garfunkel. There's no better place to feel at home with so many great people. Young, old, in the middle, families, it doesn't matter. The side deck is great for dollar burgers and outdoor bands, and then inside with a full bar and SUSHI BOB! wow my favorite summer destination!! been going to BI for 20 yrs twice a summer. we go there to chill during the day and head to captn nicks to see this awesome stones cover band called "The blushing brides" worth the trip there just to see them. I'm only really a fan of this place on Monday nights, which is Disco night. Drinks are a bit pricy, which is the same at anywhere else on the island. The sushi is borderline amazing though. Not sure when they serve that. read more

This is a really fun place to go out on Block Island, and they have different themes each night of the week. We ended up going a few times because Captain Nick's was a 2 minute walk from the inn we stayed at. On Sunday we enjoyed drinks outside while a live band played. The margaritas were delicious and strong. On Monday we stopped in and were pleasantly surprised by their disco night. People of all ages were having the time of their lives dancing to the classic disco tunes, and even if this is not your typical type of music (it's not ours), you couldn't help but want to get on the dance floor and "shake your groove thang." Lots of fun. Wednesday we went for their piano night, and the musician was really talented and could play any request. Captain Nick's offers many different options for a good time to suit whatever your style is. Drinks were priced fairly, and their upstairs area has comfy couches and games (darts, checkers). I didn't eat food there, so can't comment on it. But definitely stop in if you're looking for a fun place to go out late night on Block Island! read more

Gotta say if you're looking for a good time ya gotta give this place a go. We dropped in one weekend late afternoon and enjoyed some amazing sushi on the deck. Band was great and there was even a cute little kid component going on during happy hour. Only on Block Island! Went back later that night after the littles were asleep and found that's when the real fun starts. Some crazy live band was on and you couldn't help but dance, our crew had a blast.
