we have really enjoyed all of our visits to this restaurant but they really went above and beyond last night by getting my family of 10 in for my mom's birthday dinner despite the fact that I had accidentally made a reservation to a Rathskeller in Indiana and didn't realize until we were all there and waiting. The manager there Riley, was so kind, understanding, and accommodating and got us seated so quickly. Food, service, games, and live music were all great. Nice spot to grab a beer and some pub food. They have a big bar area where you can watch the game and cozy booths to the side and back. There's a good selection of European style beers on tap and they have a cocktail menu as well. Service is friendly and quick. We had wings and fish and chips. The fish and chips was a massive portion of beer battered fish and a huge mound of fries with a side of slaw. While the fish was flaky and fresh the fries were not very crispy which was a disappointment. The garlic parmesan wings were delicious and came with nuggets of fried garlic. So, I really like the Rathskeller. I must, because it's kind of an out of the way place to get to on a winding road out in the woods (or so it feels). Its far from fancy but shouldn't be given the meaning of the name of the place. The best things about it are (in no particular order): the food, the liveliness, and the outdoor areas for dining, cornhole and such, and for events. It's worth the drive, but bring a DD if you want a few drinks given the route in and out. I find their burger and fries really good! read more

Ratskeller is certainly worth a visit when you are vacationing or just traveling through the area. Menu is traditional pub food with a flare. Service was good, flavors of all our dishes were right up there. You might want to keep an eye out for their rotating German Beer offerings which are extensive and wide reaching throughout Germany. They have a very sophisticated tap system which holds the beer temperature from beer keg to tap at approximately 28°F which greatly minimizes foam loss due to high beer line temps. New menu item alert! New season, new menu. The Rathskeller put a shio pork ramen on the menu. Now, it's sort of confusing, in that by the name, I was thinking it's a shio broth. The item description says it has a miso broth. When it came out, I tasted no miso, and it wasn't cloudy in the least, as I'd expect with a miso broth. It tastes like a shio broth, so the name does not lie. Anyway, it is very very good. It comes with 2 slices of chashu pork that just melt in your mouth. This is a lovely dish and perfect for cold nights. Also, the night I went, the creme brulee of the day was butterscotch. And I'm a sugar fiend, so I absolutely loved it. Cut it with a bit of coffee, if you're not as much into sweets. The sugar crust was just a bit thicker than you'd normally get (but, I actually like that...I actually find the "proper" creme brulee crust is too thin), and it was perfectly creamy and smooth underneath. We had a reservation for six. We had a nice table in the corner, drinks for everyone. Friendly family conversation was pretty easy since the background noise was not abusive like in some restaurants. Updating my review to focus on the Down Back area . Live music on the weekends through the summer with a variety of performers. Meet your friends and have dinner beforehand or settle in at the provided seating area. They have a great bonfire area and you can even bring your own chairs and sit off to the side. Visited last weekend. Didn't wait long for a table and we were seated outside. Started with chowder and pretzel, both were good but couldn't make it through pretzel. Ordered fish and chips, and the chicken sandwich with no mustard or arugula. When it came it did have mustard which was too spicy for me so told my server and she asked what I wanted to do ....so I advised cant have it with the mustard and she took it back. It returned not long after and essentially they cut the bottom of the chicken off...long day I was too tired to ask if that was their only solution lol. This is a great spot for a delicious meal. Hidden in the back woods of Charlestown, this spot has a cozy atmosphere in a real local charm. With a great assortment of fresh beers and massive portions of food you will never go hungry. The food here is amazing and the service is just as good. I fully suggest starting off with a plate of their delicious french fries. You can get them naked, or with various toppings, including gravy or even Japanese curry. Ate lunch here today; we received the same great service and food as we are accustomed to. We always sit at the bar and Jill, the bartender, is a friendly and efficient. We chose meatless options today, shrimp/kale/caesar wrap served with house potato chips and portobello mushroom grilled cheese served with house french fries. OH MY! We were delighted with our choices. The wrap, a special on today's menu, is an interesting combination of foods, fresh, flavorful and generous. The grilled cheese is on the regular menu and is a combination of Brie and fontina cheeses and cremini, button and portobello mushrooms, served hot, and gooey and delicious. I loved this place so much that I went back when I was in the area! The first time my bf and I went at night and had some amazing German food and beer. The next time I went with the kids who love pretzels and we had a great time on the back patio. There was a concert going on in their side yard and that was pretty neat to see that they have a multi-purpose space. The servers were friendly and attentive. I had this meal from this restaurant because they were apart of the Charlestown seafood festival. So it was not at their restaurant it was at a booth. Regardless the lobster grilled cheese was delicious. It had a good amount of lobster meat in it and the cheese tasted like it was a blend and came with enough! The bread was buttered and toasted to perfection honestly would eat there again. Plus the Samdwhich was only 20$ which I think is a good deal. The service was fast as well. read more

Made reservations for 8 people to sit outside Friday night (8/15/25) for the prime rib Friday special ($43). This is the 4th summer we have done this. Received a call ~2:00 pm asking if we would agree to eat indoors to allow others to sit outside. I said no. Waitress started out sweet and friendly. We ordered. When the food came, all the prime ribs were fattier than all other years. The broccolini was heaped upon the French fries so they were soggy and sitting in liquid. EVEN WORSE, they forgot one prime rib for one of us. She had to wait 15-20 minutes to get her meal. We all felt bad eating while she waited. When she got her food, she didn't enjoy the meal as everyone else was done. The waitress said sorry with a shrug of her shoulders. No manager ever came over and apologized and there was no consideration on the bill. They could have taken that meal off the bill or offered a round of drinks / desserts. We all decided there would probably not be a fifth year. Very sad from a Place we loved. read more

I decided to give this place another chance after my last bad experience and oh, how I wish I didn't. We waited 1.5 hours for our food just to arrive cold and missing items. I will say, my drink was good but the food was just average. We received a "sorry, kitchen is backed up" but nothing more. If you are missing live music during Corona Times then the Charlestown Rathskeller might be a place you want to check out. Today I'm reviewing only my experience in the downback area of the Rathskeller because we did not eat in the restaurant, although we went inside to use the bathroom and it's very nice and I've heard good things but I digress. *Masks are required when entering and exiting, walking around, going up to the snack bar/ordering drinks, walking to and from the bathrooms but if you are sitting in your seats or in your own space you can remove them if you would like. Staff is also all wearing masks* In the down back area they have a huge tent that opens up to a beautiful field area with a fire pit, picnic tables and individual chairs that you can move around. They have them setup so they are spaced out we just adjusted our seats so we could sit in a circle with our group of friends. People were pretty good about keeping to their own groups/social distancing and wearing masks when required to. The band and stage area is more than enough distance away from the crowd as well. The snack bar has a small but good menu of bar food with my favorite kind of fries..Hand cut fries!!!! The short rib grilled cheese was delicious! Prices are reasonable. They have bathrooms inside the restaurant and two porta potties in the outdoor area and all were pretty clean. Now a days there is risk with everything we do but I feel like this is such a great way to get to see a live band and feel some sort of normalcy. read more

I visited Charlestown Rathskeller for the RI Food Fights burger competition. I would give a 3.5 if I could for my first visit. The parking is up a tiny hill in a one way lot that wraps around. It looks small, but there is plenty of spots. The inside was VERY dark and almost stuffy. Luckily the patio was open and we choose outside instead. It was still relatively cold but much better than the stuffiness inside. Next to the patio was a giant backyard that patrons had access to for corn hole or walking while waiting for food. I've never seen anything like it! It was neat. The burger came out with no sides. It was a big patty and only cheese. Any additions, such as lettuce and tomato, would have been extra. I could taste pepper in the patty, but no other seasoning. I ordered medium rare but it came more rare, but still not as juicy as other burgers I've tried. I have nothing bad to say about the burger but nothing stands out. I wouldn't come back for the burger but I would try other things. read more

Ugh!! I really wanted to give this restaurant a better review. This is my second time there. The first time was decent, but the second time was very disappointing. Our appetizer came out within 15 minutes but our food was almost an hour. When it eventually came out, I had ordered a burger, and the bun was completely soggy. French fries look like it had just been dipped in vegetable oil, almost making them seem translucent. I do have to say this place overall is cool, but last nights meal was not great. However, we then stayed to watch a band and was able to check out the back area for the first time. It was absolutely lovely. They offer cornhole and other activities. Including a great bonfire. I will definitely be back, even though the experience inside the restaurant was not the best. On a positive note, the staff was very friendly, and the restaurant was clean. read more

My husband and I have been to the Charlestown Rathskeller multiple times over the years. The food has always been outstanding, especially their handcut fries and beet salad. We also enjoy the large beer selection they have. Always quality brews on tap. Yesterday was a total disappointment. We both were in the mood for fish sandwiches and inquired what the catch of the day was. We were informed for sandwiches, it was haddock. We were both expecting a decent piece of fish. My husband's fish was 1/2 an inch thick and very small. It bearly covered the bun. Mine was worse. The fish for my sandwich, was only tail of the fish! Lucky if it was 1/4 of an inch thick. I did not get bun, but it certainly would not have covered it. I should have sent it back to the kitchen based on the size and cost. Unfortunately it will be a while before we go back here and I will never order their fish sandwich again. It was a total rip off @ $20.25 since we had fries with it. Outdoor venue is good venue food service is absolutely horrible. Not well organized. Total confusion. I strongly recommend eating first before coming to listen to music. It took over 2 hours to get our food that is how screwed up this place is. I only recommend this place for the venue. And you may as well just drink in the parking lot because you can't get drinks in the venue in any less than an hour. Poorly run place. Love Love Love. A menu with a German tilt (yet local taps and local favorites like calamari, chowder, fresh seafood), cool interior and plenty of parking. The location is odd - it's in the middle of a very rural community drive 12 minutes up a road off Rte 1 through sleepy homes and you are suddenly there. The final stamp of approval is the outdoor music tent. I went for a Dave Mathews Cover Band concert and holy hannah it was awesome. They have a good rotation of bands (in season) and my only sadness is that there isn't another music night during the rest of my stay in the area. They have a biggie fire pit, outdoor bar, games, picnic area. And I'll say it again, the quality of the music lineup makes this a food followed by music destination worth checking out! read more

This didn't come with fries (or any side)... which is disappointing, and their bbq is very ketchup like (I prefer a deep, dark, Smokey/molasses bbq-- think Memphis& Kansas). Still, a great bite but that's the reason for -1 star. Service was also just okay, not super welcoming but sufficient. * The real sleeper here is the garlic parm wings. These bad boys were loaded with parm and dripping in garlic. Those are whole fried garlic cloves, and I'm here for it. 5 stars during COVID-19 contingencies? Heck Yeah!!! This place has been around awhile and for good, no make that GREAT reasons. It's food and beverage service has been amazing. I've tried everything on the menu and I have to tell you that whatever you choose you cannot go wrong. I love the fries with gravy (Poutine) and the warm roast beef sandwich with horseradish sauce and homemade chips. Don't forget that this place is a local haunt of none other than Gene Hackman. Went on a Sunday and we sat outside as the weather was beautiful. Service was terrible! It took forever to have a server come to our table. Server did apologize for the long wait as they were extremely busy. Ordered a cheeseburger which the menu says has lettuce, tomato and onion on it. Well another painful wait. Now the server didn't bring the food, a service runner from the kitchen bought it out, dropped it off and was not to be seen again. My cheeseburger didn't have cheese, lettuce, tomato or onion. I got a bun with a plain burger. Oh, and a pickle. There were no chips or fries either. Well because the server nor the person who delivered the burger were no where to be found, I ate the burger as is. When leaving I noticed at group who had another table must have got my burger as there was the lettuce, tomato onion and part of the burger still on their plate. Had to track down a server to put in the replacement order. Still waiting for food at 7:20p. Told server that we had to leave by 7:40p and that we'd need to take our food to go. Got check by 7:30p. Had to bring credit card to server to process, after she walked by 3 times. Paid. Had to go find server again at 7:35p to get our To-Go bag of food. It was handed to us by a different server. No apologies. The manager avoided us as we were waiting near the server station by the food. Not looking forward to eating reheated burgers when we finally get home in an hour. This place is seriously cool. I can see though why there are some sub-par reviews- the food is not fantastic, at least the entrees. But the appetizers were really good- we had loaded fried and garlic parmesean wings. I get the vibe it's a good drinking and finger food type place. But the atmosphere is very dynamic! We started the evening early on with family, including little kids, and they had a great outdoor space where the kids met other kids and ran around and played. After dinner the environment changed for us- the family with the kids went home and we stayed for an awesome live band. The live band space is beautiful with an awesome fire pit and outdoor bar and beautiful landscaping. We had some very delicious drinks. While the food may just be ok, the place overall is super cool. read more

Located slightly in a secluded location, there was good amount of people when we went there. They have an outdoor patio and large amount of indoor seating. Wide variety of different types of people though mostly casual ambiance. Our bartender was very good, service was excellent and drinks were great as above. Got the mudslide which was quite good. Food wasn't that impressive. Got the garlic parm wings which were just wings with a ton of parm thrown on top. Also got the calamari which was soft and good although slightly on the oily side. I met two others for dinner here recently. I had been a while back and thought it was great. Unfortunately this most recent visit wasn't great at all. We all ordered drinks which were the only good part of the meal. Our server didn't seem like she wanted to be there. We had to ask multiple times for waters for the table. Our food was brought out and she never came to check in with us on how everything was. As far as the food goes it was very overpriced and lacking flavor. I ordered a chicken and Brie sandwich that had absolutely no flavor. It was supposed to have bacon onion jam on it but I couldn't locate it on the sandwich. It was extremely dry and the chicken didn't taste seasoned at all. One of my friends ordered a burger and said it was not worth the $17 price tag. It didn't even come with a side which was shocking for the price. If she wanted to add fries it would've been an extra $7! My other friend ordered the chicken bacon ranch sandwich and said it was okay but they preferred the potato chips that came as a side with it. All and all we wouldn't come back again given that none of us were satisfied with our meals and also because the service was terrible. read more
