Truly care about the animals here and work with them to get them adopted. A great way to find a forever animal!

This shelter is all right. I wish they could update their website with all the current pets and their pictures a little more, but then again, animal turnover can be high, and they're a non-profit with limited resources. So just be aware that there may be more animals at the LCHS than shown on the website. We adopted a cat from the LCHS a few years ago, and she captured our hearts and was just the best companion. The shelter isn't huge, but the facilities are a step up from the old location on 280, where I volunteered back in the stone ages. From recent visits, I love how you're able to freely interact with the cats and kittens (not sure about dogs), and they also pipe in music for the felines. When we adopted our cat, we weren't able to adopt the same day since the adoption coordinator was out but I'm not sure how it is now. Anyway, adopt a shelter pet!!!! read more

What is going on with the Lee County Humane Society? I want to preface this review by saying that I support the LCHS with donations, and I adopted a cat from there earlier this year. However, I really must say, that they need to work on their customer service. The adoption agents are really nice and friendly, but getting to the actual adoption stage in which you meet these lovely people can be tough. My husband and I went here at least 5 times before we found the cat that we wanted, and each time, we were completely ignored by the staff at the front desk, even when we were standing their holding a cat in our arms that we wished to adopt. I felt like screaming, "HELLO? We're trying to help you here by adopting this cat? You know... the reason that your shelter exists?" I would say that the service there was so bad because the place was crowded, but this was not always the case. The first time we tried to adopt a kitten, there was only one person in front of us, with two girls behind the desk. We stood in the lobby for 40 minutes waiting for someone to take our adoption form. I also had a LOT of trouble getting in contact with them over the phone. I needed to get my vet to coordinate with them, and every time I or my vet called, we were placed on hold for about 12 minutes (I timed it) and then the call was eventually lost or dropped. I don't understand this. I fully support the mission of animal shelters, and I understand that the staff is mostly volunteers (and that they might be a bit understaffed for their growing size). My slightly sub-par experiences would never make me recommend that someone NOT go to the Humane Society to adopt a pet. However, I hope that someone from the LCHS reads this and realizes that it is helpful to greet people with a smile when they come to your establishment. I have adopted 4 pets from animal shelters, and helped friends adopt pets themselves, and I know that the experience can and should be better. Most shelters are staffed with friendly, competent people who you can tell are animal and people lovers. My experiences standing and standing and standing in the LCHS don't quite convince me that everyone there falls into this category. read more

Such a great place! Staff is friendly and helpful. Always clean. They do a great job with behavioral assessments and take the time to get to know the animals. I know that sick animals get good medical care and they truly care about animals! Thank you for what y'all do! read more

RUDE!!! I had been volunteering there for 6 months. I started when they just implemented their new dog walking and volunteer policy. I abided by their new rules of undergoing their training hours and spent much of my personal time volunteering as I very much enjoyed spending time with the dogs specifically. I recently decided to foster as they had sent out an email asking for foster because they were full. After getting the puppy, she was very sick with worms and became sick with kennel cough. I multiple times voiced this to the staff uncharge of fostering and they seemed to become quite annoyed. After coming in to tell them about her kennel cough and they brushing it off, I did not trust them, as the puppy had been super lethargic all day, I took her to the vet. After multiple radiographs and blood work, she was admitted and kept over night only to be diagnosed with worms again and put on 3 different antibiotics, all which I more than happily paid for out of my own pocket because LCHS didn't seem to care enough and brushed it off. Sunday (6/10/18), when bringing her back from foster, I cried because I had built a bond with her. I took her to work every day, I never left her alone, but I couldn't adopt her as I am prior military and will be getting a service dog in August and felt it wouldn't be fair to her, or the dog I receive if I wasn't able to give one or the other my full attention. Since the puppy had been sick for the 3 weeks I had fostered her, she was supposed to be checked out to make sure she was healthy enough to go up for adoption. However, when they took her, they just gave her shots and said she was good, thus making it very much seem as though they just wanted her back to put her up for adoption to make money off of her, although she had just had worm 2 days prior. Monday (6/11/18) the day of their adoption event, I went to check on her to see if she had been adopted and she was extremely lethargic again. While holding her, an employee came in and snatched her from my hands stating, "WE ARE CLOSING AND I HAVE TO TAKE HER OUT!" Having been volunteering there for the last 6 months and knowing the protocol, her actions and attitude were uncalled for. I asked, "Has she been barking all day? Why is she so lethargic?" Her response with an attitude, "I don't know, she has been quiet all day," and stormed out. I worried about her walked out crying and another employee that knows me approached me asking what was wrong, I explained the situation and as we were standing there talking, the same employee that had taken the puppy out started to bring her back inside. I tried to pet her and say goodbye to her and the employee carrying her didn't even stop or acknowledge my existence. Having spent much of my own time there to walk, jog-a-dog, take better pictures of their animals to have them post on their website for adoptions, spend my personal money to sponsor heart worm treatments, and spend my time at their shelter their level of professionalism is absolutely unacceptable. Upon taking this up with the woman who currently runs LCHS, the excuse for the employee was it had been a long day. Well, she chose the wrong person to be rude to after a long day. As a veteran of the Marine Corps who has worked numerous long days and through many lunch breaks (another excuse they used), there is absolutely no reason to treat anyone the way they have, long day or not. Their kennel staff is amazing. However, their front desk staff and some managers are absolutely unprofessional and down right rude. As a nonprofit organization, they operate off of volunteers and donations and it would probably be in their best interest to have much better customer service and not treat anyone who has so graciously put their time and money towards their shelter and animals like they are a burden. I will no longer associate with LCHS or anyone that does business with them, and as I am now, will make sure people are well aware of how rudely they treat volunteers and fosters. I have spoken with other volunteers who have also stated that they're rude to them as well. **All the pictures below have been taken BY ME. I adopted a pet in 2016, and he is my best friend!!! LCHS staff was great with handling my pet's adoption, and they gave me all the resources I needed if any problems arrived. Thanks to generous donors, my dog was able to get HW treated before adoption too. They truly care about all pets in their care! read more

Lies about medical records of pets. First animal I adopted from them had to be put down 2 months later because of a blood disease that caused kidney failure. 3 years later after specifically asking about a certain cats medical records, I adopted another animal and found out this cat had a deadly disease when I took the cat for a check up at the vet the same week I got her. My family went to the humane society to complain about this problem they never told us about and they were defensive and acted VERY unprofessional. We felt very attacked from these people because they were harassing us and making us feel like we were in the wrong. I think the humane society has good intentions, but are willing to bend the truth to get animals adopted. read more

I adopted my dog here over a year and a half ago and she is the best thing that has happened to me. The staff is always so helpful and always has advice on caring for an animal should you need any help! They work hard to care for all of the animals throughout the shelter and throughout the county. They do the best they can with the funds and donations they get. One of the best staff to deal with! read more

Adopted a kitten from here that I was told only had a mild upper respiratory infection. When I took this kitten to the vet they said he was MUCH sicker than I was told at adoption but if he received the medical care that they thought he needed could make a recovery. Three days and hundreds of dollars later my kitten is still very very sick and not progressing. He may very well die in the next coming days because he refuses to eat because he's riddled with parasites that he wasn't adequately treated for! We can very well bring him back to the shelter but we won't be refunded for any costs we have paid because of a waiver they MAKE you sign in order to leave with the pet. I'm not sure why there are so many rules, restrictions and conditions for adopting a pet when so many people are abusive towards animals! This shelter is not where you want to adopt your pet from. We are heartbroken over this and won't be returning. read more

I went to adopt a beautiful, kind, loving kitten. BUT these people's attitudes need to be checked. There is no reason for such rude hospitality. The people there have great animal skills, but need to learn how to speak to people. I was beyond disappointed by the way these people spoke to others. Luckily I got a great cat, but I won't be back. read more

I have to agree that the customer service is horrible. I called there just yesterday and asked if they had any puppies she said yes we have three, then I asked if it is only three puppies would you mind telling me what the three puppies are she said no I don't know what the three puppies are I can't tell you that and I was like are you serious I'm sure u have a chart or something that you can look at. It was clearly one of those I just don't want to do it and I'm not. Then I asked for the Manager she states that the Manager is not there and she's in charge. I was like this is wild. So LCHS please get some professionalism about your self and some customer service training are the results will be those poor puppies will never find a good home and it will all be because of you!!! read more
