Well, it wasnt the bird flu but i felt wobbly. I wanted to go to my school clinic but alas it being a holiday and all they were closed. Why do I only get sick on Holidays? Or why do I wait so long its and urgency? These are questions that will never be answered. This place however has an answer to these types of questions and more. The place was clean and fancy, I kinda felt like I was in the plastic surgery clinic by mistake. I read W magazine because I showed up early. Chartruese is in this year as in metallics .... stiiiiiillll(but more coppers and bronzes than silver and gold). I was seen on time!! In and out and professional and friendly.I only yelp things that would take my mean spirited parents. I would take them there. This is coming from a guy who hates doctors (mostly the gen) Go there. Wow! I have never been treated so poorly in my life! I called them up with a few questions such as fees and services and the woman on the phone was extremely rude. I wasn't making a prank call when I asked how their services worked. I actually wanted to know and give them money to do services, because that's how a business works. I give money and you do the job advertised. It felt like she didn't want to talk to me. I stayed polite through the whole phone call and said "Thank you for your time at the end." The woman on the phone just hung up on me right before saying "Just come in if you want to know what we do, it's $135!" Dr. Aaron Blackledge is my hero! He stocked me up with all the goods I need and I don't have insurance. This man helps the people that don't have insurance. My initial visit was $150. or $175. He then diagnosed me, gave me some meds for a small price and I went on my way. The office interior is calming and kind of soothes the pain your in. The front staff is friendly and preps your paperwork for the doc. Dr. Blackledge is amazing in his profession and helps abolish your sickness. He is very specific and gives you the most information possible about whatever your problem is. I was so stocked up with meds and such by the time I left and it saved me a trip to the pharmacy. I will never go to another doctor again In San Francisco besides this man! Best part of all, he is burner and techno music friendly! I would recommend him to any and everyone who needs general medical attention. read more

After living next to the toilet completely incapacitated for a few days I realized what was wrong, knew exactly what I had, and knew I'd probably be dead if I had to wait 3-5 days for labwork again. Last time this happened was hell enough with my health, and the insurance company bullshit made it all that much worse. It was like an angel shining upon me when I realized that a new doctor had moved less than a block away. Barely able to move 10 feet, it was still quite an adventure to make it there. I planned to beg and plead the office assistant to go to the pharmacy for me...it was just impossible in my condition. But Aaron was amazing! He checked me out, was awesomely sympathetic, and had the antibiotics right there for me. I think I cried. He told me to be careful when taking them, but being the superhero that I am, I didn't listen and most of them ended up in the toilet. They replaced them, no charge, and again with much understanding and sympathy. The cost of the visit was less than what I pay monthly for a health insurance that I never use because the bureaucracy of it is such a pain in the ass. I could have submitted the bill to my insurance company but never did, because it just wasn't worth the hassle. When I get a free moment, I'm definitely changing my insurance to some sort of emergency plan, and just going to Care Practice from now on. read more

My immune system said "Hey you know what would be awesome? If I let you get Strep throat!" No, not really. That's not awesome, especially on a weekend when I know General Hospital will be to crazy to deal with, but i just had to be seen immediately...so I looked up urgent care facilities and came across Care-Practice. To my much appreciativeness the on call doctor (Aaron) was able to meet me right away on a Saturday! He had me fill out a teeny bit of paper work and in a matter of just a half and hour I was on my way to recovery! The first time there will cost you a bit out of the pocket, however they do give you paperwork for insurance reimbursement. The price does go down if you do become a regular..( i hope not! hanging at the doctors is not what i call fun time)...anyhow, the office is really nice, modern and clean and in walking distance from my apartment. This review is for Dr. Vinh Ngo. I got that nasty stomach flu that was going around. After three weeks I finally bit the bullet and went in to see a doctor for the first time since my insurance ran out. I got a next day appointment and had no wait time when I went in. Dr. Ngo was very personable, and asked about how I would feel about trying a natural healing method or if I would prefer western medicine. I asked what my options were and he suggested a juice fast and took a bunch of time to write out what specific natural remedies to incorporate day by day during the fast, and for the full week after. I took his advice and within two days felt better. It really meant a lot to me to have him care enough to ask me how I felt about being healed in traditional methods. Yes, natural methods have a much deeper history then Western medicine. While I absolutely believe in Western medicine for certain things, it is nice to know all my body needed was a break and some good pure organic juice, not some chemicals.... Going through his reviews I found this: "I cannot recommend this medical practice. I went there with severe intestinal problems that I picked up while travelling. Dr. Ngo, while nice, suggested I return to my regular doctor as soon as possible. He offered to sell me supplements to improve my digestion. For this he charged $180. When I got to see my regular doctor a week later, he responded as a REAL doctor would: he put me on Cipro. My symptoms disappeared in three days. This is at best a naturapthic practice and at worst a complete ripoff." Chas W. from Milwaukee: Get over yourself. I recently visited Dr. Andrew Brandeis for a tune-up: I wasn't sick, but I also wasn't as healthy as I wanted to be. I was very impressed. :-) He stayed with me for over an hour, and answered all my questions about allergies and immune systems and respiratory issues and diet and health care. I was on vacation in SF and losing the battle with a horrible cough/cold. I kept thinking I could shake it, but after a nearly a week of sleepless nights from intense coughing fits, I finally broke down on a Sunday morning and desperately looked for an urgent care doctor to see ASAP. I was able to make my appointment for noon of that day with Dr. Alex Zaphiris. The facility is a few minutes drive from Union Square. I only waited a few minutes before being seen by Dr. Zaphiris. She was great. She listened to my complaints/concerns, quickly diagnosed me, and got me the meds I needed to feel better. They don't bill insurance so I had take care of submitting my claim, but that's a small price to pay for getting on the road to recovery. Thanks for helping me feel better! read more

My brother, who has no insurance, stepped on a nail. We called Care Practice at 1:15 on a Sunday, got an appointment for 2:00, and were back out the door by 2:30 with a consultation, a tetanus shot, antibiotics, and pain killers. The whole thing cost about $355, and would have been even less, had my brother the good sense to step on a nail on a different day of the week. I was referred to Care Practice by a friend who was a patient of Dr. Blackledge, in the beginning I only went for urgent care, but it wasn't long before I started going for primary care as well. A lot of people don't like the fact that they don't take insurance, but it's a trade off that works to everyone's advantage in my opinion, since dealing with insurance issues slows down and complicates things. I've been going to Care Practice for almost a couple years now, and the first year I submitted my receipts to my insurance on my own, they provide all the paperwork to you, but I'm a relatively healthy young person, and aren't even likely to reach my medical insurance deductible this year anyway, so why even bother submitting to insurance? If I were less healthy or needed lots of tests or surgery my situation would be different, but even still, the high quality of service, ease of making appointments, lack of endless time in a Kaiser waiting room for assembly line-like visits where you spend most of the time with a PA or RN in the treatment room before the doctor pops in for 10 minutes... I could keep going, but the point is that I don't stress about making a doctor's appointment anymore, don't need to schedule appointments weeks or months in advance, don't need to take off a half day of work to sit in a waiting room, etc. Another great thing is that they stock a lot of common medications in the office, saving the patient another uncomfortable trip to the pharmacy and more waiting - the people who complain about the pricing just need to ask for a prescription, that's what I do with the more expensive medications I want insurance to cover through Walgreens, but for more common and affordable drugs, that convenience can be priceless when you're sick. Dr. Blackledge even responds to email - I'd never had a doctor before who did that. I've also seen other doctors at the practice a few times, and it's been a great experience. I was sick once on the weekend and my only options were to go to the emergency room (overboard at $1000+ and lots of waiting/hassle) or grin and bear it until I could get a weekday appointment. Care Practice offered a third option and I was able to make an appointment on a Sunday and went to see Dr. Zaphiris. I had never seen her before and was a little anxious, but I was able to get in quickly and easily, it made me feel so much better it was totally worth the weekend pricing, still a fraction of the price of an emergency room with such better service - it's always unfortunate to have a mini-emergency like that, but Care Practice provides a better option than anywhere else I've been able to find. And yes, like the other reviewers say it's a hip, clean, well-organized office with great staff and a relaxing atmosphere. It's super easy to schedule appointments online too. A lot of the negative reviews are simply because they don't take care of billing your insurance for you, but most people can still get 50-80% reimbursement for "out of network" providers, you just have to send the bill yourself. I also used my Flexible Spending Account dollars there last year, and then this year switched to a Health Savings Account (since I don't hit my $1500 deductible anyway) and have used that to pay as well, they do take credit cards. My employer is required by law (San Francisco Health Care Security Ordinance, see SFCityOption.com) to contribute to a Medical Reimbursement Account, and I've submitted my Care Practice receipts to that as well, in the long run it honestly is not over-priced for me, the value is undeniable for my situation and circumstances. In my opinion, Care Practice is the way modern medical offices should be run, I'm dreading the day I move out of SF and go back to institutionalized care. read more

This is a great place for someone to go if you're worried about not having health insurance. The staff are professional and the interior is clean. This is as close as you can get, if not better, for medical care. I came here a week before my trip to Peru to get vaccinated for Hepatitis A and the process was like a simple walk in and walk out. Simple. You don't need to worry about filling out stacks of paperwork or anything. You know that feeling you get whenever you're in the hospital...that good feeling (probably a placebo effect)...you'll feel it at Care Practice. I highly recommend Dr. Blackledge. Reliable, professional, friendly, punctual, warm, kind, and intelligent medical care, in a lovely setting, for reasonable prices - Care Practice is all of those things and more. I have been a patient at Care Practice for over three years. Dr. Blackledge and Dr. Ngo are both exceptionally smart, professional, warm, and caring people, who have never treated myself or my husband with anything other than respect and genuine concern. Care Practice is what I wish all doctors' offices could be. While it may take a bit of time if you don't make an appointment, you still get seen - and the wait for walk-ins is STILL less time than I usually have to wait for traditional doctors, even when I have made appointments! The office is lovely, and the front desk people are friendly, helpful, and efficient. I am a Suboxone patient. I wish I had done my first appoinment (to be induced) at Care Practice - because the doctor I went to for induction charged me almost TWICE as much as Care Practice does, and was nowhere near as knowledgeable about addiction and Suboxone issues as Dr. Blackledge. Dr. B genuinely cares about, and understands, addicts, and goes out of his way to make patients feel comfortable. His understanding of addiction has made my life inexpressibly better and easier since I started coming to Care Practice. I can say without exaggeration that my life is better for having found this place. I recommend it without any reservations. I read a comment on another board that someone thought the induction cost at CP is too high, and that they don't like the fact that CP may ask for a deposit for suboxone induction appointments. But Care Practice's fee for induction is the lowest I've ever seen (also, far lower than the cost of being an active addict!). As for the deposit, from what I understand, doctors get a very high rate of no-shows for suboxone induction patients - way higher than the usual no-show rate. Each no-show costs money, so it makes sense for doctors to ask for a deposit for induction appointments. And it's no big deal, if you show up for your appointment. I really can't recommend Care Practice highly enough - if you are frustrated by "traditional" doctors' offices, and want doctors who take time with you and care very much about your wellbeing, Care Practice is for you. read more

I found Care Practice when I needed to see a doctor during a lapse in health insurance, and let me tell you I will never go back to see another primary care doctor again! I love these guys, the doctors take plenty of time to listen to you and talk to you. They take last minute appointments without any problem. I haven't used their 24 hour or house call service but the availability of it is awesome. I almost never have to wait long to get in to see the doctor. Well, yes, but Dr. Blackledge's office (he prefers Aaron) is the Ike's place of doctor's offices, actually probably a bit better than Ike's. Maybe the Gary Danko of doctors? I called on a sunday, thinking I had strep, and thinking I was calling one of those urgent care clinics. I wasn't, but Aaron told me to come on in, was awesome, hooked me up with some codine, and sent me on my way- no waiting for anything. If you have another doctor already, switch! I guess not accepting insurance may be a con for some, but after co-pay's these days you won't be coming out that far behind. Very nice set up and people. Would highly recommend if you want a cash only quick visit sort of place. If you are needing to make an insurance claim, it can be a hassle, however, which is definitely not Care Practice's fault. My lovely insurance company wouldn't give me credit for a recent visit, after two or three tries (thank you Blue Cross!). They are mo-rons. I was supposed to know the precise medical billing code for the procedure to get credit! When I didn't put this on the form which you have to fill out they cancelled my claim. read more

The folks at CP are great, especially with last minute requests. I recently needed to see a doctor late in the afternoon (after 5pm) and was able to get an appt. at 6:30pm with Dr. Vinh Ngo. Dr. Vinh was great to work with, he asked me all the right questions and treated me directly in his office - no waiting around for a nurse - which is great service. Dr. Vinh supplied me with the medicine I needed and I was in and out of their office in under an hour, how's that for service! Their name epitomizes this clinic, because the staff here truly Cares. Dr. Blackledge took such wonderful care of me while I was between jobs and insurance plans. I have a chronic illness, and Dr. Blackledge was always either an office visit or an e-mail away. I have been coming here for several years and it is the best place for me. Its quick efficient and very clean. In the crazy city I live in which is San Francisco I feel very safe here and it is flexible with my work hrs which are 10hr days. If I need a weekend date I can also request that as well. Even though they are open part time it has never been a problem for me getting an appointment. Dr. Blackledge and his staff always make me feel welcome and go above what takes to be a professional in today's fast paced working healthcare arena. Simply Amazing! I have been seeing Dr. Vinh Ngo for about six months at Care Practice, and everything has been top notch. He specializes in, among other things, Men's Health. I had seen many doctors for my condition, and none of them could quite figure out what was wrong with me, only offering band aid solutions instead of a cure. I have an under diagnosed condition called Andropause or Male menopause. I didn't know men could get this, esp at my age (as I'm pushing 40 now, darnit!). But Dr. Ngo keenly asked the right questions and ordered a set of labs. We did a challenge test over one weeks time, which resulted in some solid answers to my issue, in which he explained to me in-depthly in a way I could understand. I'm now working with him through a special pharmacy which makes the medicine for me. He's also got me on herbs and some all-natural treatments, to support me nutritionally. He calls this "Integrative Medicine" which apparently mixes conventional medicine with more alternative approaches. He also calls it Anti-aging or Regenerative medicine. He even diagnosed my Achilles tendon injury for me on the spot on the day I ruptured it, pushing my truck. Ouch! I'm a general contractor, so I send a lot of my injured workers here for fast, easy in/out treatment. Dr Ngo is fluent in spanish and is treating a few of my workers here with his sugar injections called Prolotherapy. It supposedly regenerates ligaments and tendons, it even helped my arthritic shoulder injury, which acts up from time to time. Overall, I can't say enough about how well they've treated me here, from the look of the office, to the staff, to the doctors. Superb! 5 stars read more

EDIT: On second thought, thinking about the diagnosis he gave me, the doctor did very little work on me. He did few examinations, and when I asked if a blood test would be in order, he said no. ------ The people here were pretty nice and the place was clean with little waiting time. It's a little bit inconvenient that they force you to pay for the services upfront, but I guess if you mention Yelp you get $50 off your first appointment (at least that's the case when I'm writing this review). So that's not too bad. I came in for "urgent care" and the cost was $145. Be careful, though, as this isn't your traditional urgent care center. I think the philosophy here is a little more holistic, as they offered me some herbal supplements on the spot. There's no prescription either, the doctor just went out back, pulled out a few things and explained what they were and told me how much they were. It can be very convenient if that's what you're looking for, but be ready, because you might be put on the spot to pay for some treatments that you might be skeptical about. I don't mean to make a commentary on holistic medicine, just a heads up that if you're expecting a traditional allopathic urgent care center. I was a little discouraged by being put on the spot to by supplements that I had little knowledge about, especially given they weren't covered by insurance. read more

Insanely impressed with this place. My regular PCP didn't expect to have the H1N1 vaccine for another 4-6 weeks. I was looking for alternatives and stumbled on Care Practice who had a simple sign announcing they had H1N1 vaccines on a drop in basis. So I dropped in and $25 later I was vaccinated. This wasn't before I spoke with Dr Blackledge about his practice, methodology and process behind what they do. Wow. It is as old school you can get about doctor-patient. When I asked if they are 24/7, he said there is always a doctor on call that can see you within three hours. That is about how long you wait at the ER anyways. I was very pleased with the care I received. I called at 10:00 am and they were able to see me at 11:30.The receptionist was very friendly and the doctor treated me with the utmost care, and asked more questions than most doctors. It's all out-of-pocket expense for me, but I didn't mind paying it -- it wasn't all that much, really, considering how "personal" the care was-- plus they give you all the filled-out forms to submit to your insurance company. I felt like I was treated like a human being and the care was first rate. My HMO Urgent Care Center near me is a DUMP compared to CP. I can highly recommend CP. read more

They skipped me in the waiting room and let 2 people pass me before I said something about it and was brought to the back. After the initial review of what was wrong & bothering me the nurse told me the doctor would be right over to check on me. I have now been sitting in the office/room for 45 minutes and haven't been checked on by any doctor. I made this yelp account and wrote the review all in this waiting time because they were irritating me so much. When you're sick and want to get in and out but instead have to deal with uncaring, slow workers it makes the whole situation a huge hassle. The woman at the front desk was very helpful and checked twice for me why they were ignoring me. She was amazing but besides her, it was the worst experience at urgent care I have ever had. I'm sure they provide great service as attested to by the many reviews, but walking in sick and drenched with a fever, then told a doctor isn't available for over 24 hours doesn't sound like "...making sure our doctors are accessible for urgent care appointments and follow up needs. We do our best to organize the day with the goal of limiting wait times as much as possible with patients on average waiting less than 15 minutes for Urgent Care visits." Serious let down. read more

Hands down best medical practice I have been to in years. I have been to Care Practice twice in the past 8 months and saw two separate doctors. On both occasions, I was able to be seen within an hour of my phone call. The doctors were thorough and knowledgable and provided me with the medicines I needed in the office instead of going to a pharmacy. The front desk staff is thoughtful and sympathetic and the offices are pleasant. The only downside is you have to pay for services out of pocket %100. My two visits were about $200 and $300. However, my insurance company (an HMO) covers "urgent care" and I was able to easily submit a form and was reimbursed for all but $20 for the office visit - the same as a typical co-pay. I've had a couple of relatively minor but chronic issues that my PCP hasn't been able to solve and started looking for an alternative. Doing a number of searches, I found Care Practice and Dr. Brandeis in particular. As they're close to my home, I made an appointment. My first shock was that the reception area was completely unlike any other physician waiting room. Small but comfortable. I arrived a little early to complete the raft of paperwork that every other physician's office has made me complete to find out that they didn't have it. Very little more than my name and address. Then I met Dr. Brandeis. He's the nicest Dr I've ever met. Not only is he very knowledgeable but he's very personable and spoke to me like a human being rather than a naughty child or an idiot. He took the time needed to probe into the issues and to come up with a treatment plan. It's not a quick fix and will need me to make some lifestyle changes that I'm not looking forward to but I can see that the changes will improve my life and treat my issues. read more

Very nice mix of east meets west. I have many medical needs and my Doctor called to see if I needed anything because he was going to be gone for a month. I also love the specialized tests I have had done. One is called nutra-val (spelling?). Only down side is I have to deal with the insurance. But I love the place.
