When I first heard my loved one might be sent to CareOne @ Newton, I was terrified. After reading countless one-star reviews online, I felt certain that this was the worst-case scenario. I imagined the worst--poor care, dismal conditions, and a place where my loved one might not even make it out alive. I couldn't have been more wrong. From the moment we arrived, I realized how inaccurate those reviews were, and I felt compelled to share our positive experience with others who might be feeling the same fear I initially did. CareOne @ Newton is far from the nightmare I was dreading. The facility itself is absolutely beautiful--bright, clean, and welcoming. The rooms are spacious, well-maintained, and even have lovely views that help create a calming, almost serene environment. It's clear that thought and care went into the design of the space, which goes a long way in making both patients and families feel at ease. One of my biggest concerns going in was the quality of care my loved one would receive. Would the staff be attentive? Would they truly care about the patients? I can confidently say that the staff here exceeded my expectations. From the nurses to the aides to the administrators, everyone we interacted with was kind, patient, and professional. It was obvious that they genuinely care about the well-being of the people they are entrusted with. They took the time to address our questions and concerns, no matter how small, and always treated my loved one with dignity and respect. Another unexpected surprise was the quality of the food. Hospital or nursing home food is notorious for being bland or unappetizing, but that was not the case here. The meals were well-prepared, nutritious, and--most importantly--something my loved one actually enjoyed eating. It's small details like this that made such a difference in their recovery and overall experience. I also want to highlight the activities offered at CareOne @ Newton. They go above and beyond to keep their patients engaged and entertained. From games and social events to exercises and creative workshops, there's always something to do. These activities not only provide a sense of normalcy and joy but also play an important role in recovery and mental health. I'll attach photos and a copy of their activities page to give you a sense of the variety and effort they put into this part of the care experience. Of course, no facility is perfect, and if you're looking for a five-star luxury resort, you should probably be prepared to pay for one. CareOne @ Newton is a skilled nursing facility, and when you view it through that lens, it's truly top-notch. It's easy to nitpick or focus on small imperfections, but overall, I've been incredibly impressed with the level of care, professionalism, and dedication shown by everyone here. In the end, my fears about CareOne @ Newton couldn't have been more misplaced. Instead of the nightmare I was dreading, I found a facility that truly supports its patients and their families. My loved one received excellent care and made real progress in their recovery, which I honestly didn't think was possible when we first arrived. I'm so grateful for the team here and would wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone in need of skilled nursing care. Don't let the negative reviews scare you like they did me--this place is amazing.

The nurses and CNA in the Brooknoll unit were excellent. I literally felt that they loved him. He was always happy, clean and very well cared for. He just loved living there. I also watched how other residents were cared for and they were also well cared for and happy and to me that speaks volume. If i could give 20 stars i would.

Weekends are particularly bad. Staffing is inconsistent and many are portly trained. An example of this is that some CNAs pick up patients by hand for bed to wheelchair transfers instead of using a Hoyer lift. If they DO use the Hoyer, many times it's only one person when it is supposed to be two. The administration will tell you this never happens, but they are flat out lying as I have witnessed it. I have seen patients who are on oxygen not being reattached after a transfer. Once again, you can raise these issues with nursing staff or even in team care planning meetings, but they will tell you it's untrue. I actually stood with a nurse in front of a patient who did not have their oxygen cannula on tell me that the patient was on oxygen! You just can't make this stuff up. Many times, you cannot reach a loved one OR their unit on the telephone, the first because the aids don't set up residents who are not ambulatory or able to get to things, the second because they are short staffed and/or inattentive. Patients are not always provided access to call bells. Personal items left in drawers, etc. are treated with disregard. For example, one might find their items smeared with toothpaste because an aid shoved an open tube into a drawer after use. I have seen open moisturizer packets tossed into bedside drawers where they then get smeared all over personal belongings. One might find their limited storage space (drawers and such) inundated with towels, diapers, pads, wipes, etc. which get left by one aid and not used by the next. The more care a loved one requires, the sloppier it gets. The administration will take a position that patient reports are undependable and that what family reports isn't actually true. I've rated this place a 2 ONLY because it is sadly better than many other places. That said, the fact that what should be considered baseline is often not met is disgusting. It is apparent that supervision is minimal because the things I've mentioned, along with countless others, can be and have been observed repeatedly.

The folks who provide support and assistance were amazing, especially Filomena Lawless and Steve Murphy. Filomena offers such kindness to both residents and their families, and for that I am forever grateful. Steve was a text away, offering quick responses and helping us find who best to speak to in a few cases. The care staff in Assisted Living were incredibly helpful, especially Darlene and Mom's favorite caregiver, Bob, and kept a close eye on Mom's health, even picking up on health issues she hid from us. Mom made a wonderful friend and cribbage companion during her time there, a late in life relationship whose loss was particularly difficult for her. When she had problems with her room, both in independent and assisted living, the staff responded quickly and they were easy to interact with and very friendly. Joe, the man who provides transport, was always ready with a friendly joke and appropriate teasing and always brought a smile to Mom's face. He also brought her several cards after she was out of the buidling for a health issue. The front desk staff were helpful. So why only three stars? Mom was never very happy about the overall food quality on a day to day basis. Given the rental cost and the fact that that cost increased every year, we would have been happy to pay the increase if there were tangible improvements. During the time she lived there, whenever I would talk to local folks about Brookdale, especially people who had family there, the food quality seemed to be a common theme. The biggest complaint I have came at the end of her stay. At that point, you know that despite the friendliness and care of so many people, ultimately this is a business designed to make money and answer to a board of directors. Mom had to enter a hospital and then a rehab facility and we were hopeful for a time she would be able to return to her apartment. Once it was clear we needed to vacate her apartment, we began the process of recovering rent and assisted living care costs that had been automatically withdrawn from her checking account, per Brookdale's policy. At that point, she was in a rehab facility that was no longer covered by insurance, so she was in need of those funds, amounting to thousands of dollars. Each time we attempted to get an answer about the timeline, we received a different answer about how the process worked and when we would receive her refund. When we tried face to face meetings to that end, the director became testy. It took a full two months after she was completely moved out of Brookdale to finally have the funds in our hands. Bottom line: there are a lot of positive things about this facility, but beware it is a corporation - slow to change and respond.

It's not perfect - no place is - but the relatively small problems at OC do not in any way overshadow the friendly and helpful staff, good food, interesting and useful programs (including performances, art classes, book club, talks on various topics, etc.). I looked at numerous elder communities with my aunt before she moved here, and you will not find anything better (although you will find others that are also excellent - the final choice is determined by location, cost, environment, and personal preference). I would not at all hesitate at all to choose OC for an elder community!

The health aids were rough with my mom when she needed help getting to the bathroom or if she needed to be cleaned off from incontinence. She waited several hours to be cleaned off sitting in a soiled adult pad or after she threw up. There were feces in the shared bathroom floor for several hours. The aids would leave her food or water completely out of her reach. When I became concerned for my mom's life the nurses were dismissive. One insisted her vitals were fine and the other said if I was unhappy with the care she was receiving I should take my mom somewhere else. When I finally got through to the nurse because I thought my mom was dehydrated, it took the nurse 2 hours to get an ambulance. The nurse delayed the process by calling the doctor on call first and threatened that if I called the ambulance that I would lose my mom's room. About 2 hours after my mom arrived at the hospital she stopped breathing. She had an infection (sepsis). The doctors tried to save her and unfortunately, the next morning she passed away. Upon reading the notes from the hospital the doctor and nurses recorded that my mom was severely dehydrated and malnourished. I have since learned that these sorts of facilities have a disincentive to send a patient to the hospital because it lowers their ratings.
