Only authentic Dominican restaurant in RVA. Worth the trip if your not in the area. I usually get pollo guisado and it's always so yummy. The whole plate is only $7! I often get tostones and queso frito as well. The queso is always so crispy and perfect -- but they do run out time to time. Mofongo, Mondongo, Flan, Habichuelita y Santo Domingo! 1st visit and won't be last! I was fiending for some Authentic Dominican food ( My all time favorite and most difficult to find), and found Caribe ! What a find This was! I ordered the mofongo (mashed fried plantains with garlic and pork rinds mixed in) chicharrón, mondongo (tripe) with white rice and batida de papaya (papaya shake) to go. I was afraid the mofongo would become too tough to eat when I got home, due to the distance to my home and having to reheat the food. I arrived home and my one complaint is that the mofongo was too heavy for the styrofoam container and everything spilled into the bag. That didn't prevent me from eating it but, it almost fell out of the bag. I heated up the mofongo, added the Mondongo over it and it was purely amazing! The food was delicious, well seasoned and still tender. I also failed to mention I normally don't eat everyones Mondongo (tripe). This place is just okay. Nothing special. Tiny restaurant in a small strip mall with some tables and stools near the register. It is clean. Authentic Dominican food. Each day has a special that's already prepared and kept hot in metal buffet pans behind the register. The prices are typical for Dominican food, about $10 average, but unlike Papa Ningo, more is included as far as sides. Papa Ningo has more flavor, but it's also more expensive. I think this place is missing a little bit more sazon...like naranja agria (bitter orange) and aji cubanela (cubanelle pepper) It will do to get rid of a craving. Been eating here for years. Every time the experience is worse. The attention is horrible from the very owners and the food is every time more sloppy, just feels like the value they give their food is even lower than the quality they are trying to achieve. The delivery on behalf of the management is horrible and the wait times are outrageous. Also, very mediocre to what Dominican food actually tastes like, and this is coming from a true fan of good food. I honestly cannot recommend this place any longer to any of my associates. FINALLY.......I finally found a Dominican restaurant that comes really close to home. I found this place out from a friend she suggested I go and try it. To my surprise it was really really good. I got the friend chicken with rice and beans. I was very impressed. Almost reminded me of home......almost. The staff was very friendly and nice. It a rather small location but the taste of the food makes up for it. I want to come back when it's cold to try their soups I'm sure I won't be disappointed. Since my wife is Dominican, I know what I am looking for when it comes to Dominican food. I actually never get enough of the stuff. This place is special due to it's rarity, but not because of the quality of the food. The food is decent, but seems to lack a certain...no se que... My wife's food is far better. I would imagine that since it is located in "Little Dominican Republic," that the food would be better, but is merely okay. If you have never had Dominican food before, I suggest you try it. Well...the food was ok, but as previously stated it was lacking some flavor. It seems as though they use the basic recipe knowing that since they're in VA it would suffice. If you have eaten in a NY Dominican restaurant, or have a favorite family member who's food you love, then you will know what you are missing. The customer service was very good and if you don't like to wait on food they do have a choice of precooked foods available. As long as I am still visiting in VA I would eat here again since I don't have a kitchen of my own to cook in. Please understand I am not bashing the food I just have experienced better quality.
