I've been on a serious Jamaican food kick the past few weeks, trying spots all around Richmond and the surrounding areas, and recently stopped by Irie Ting. Overall, it was okay--definitely some hits and a few misses. Staff was nice and the place was cute. They had a packed house on a Wednesday night. We ordered a variety of items to really get a feel for the menu. I was especially excited to try the oxtail and mac & cheese egg rolls since everyone raves about them, but honestly, they were just mediocre. Not bad, just not as flavorful or memorable as I expected. On the positive side, the fish sandwich was really good--nice and not spicy with great flavor. The wings were also a win: tender, well-seasoned, and cooked just right. And the sweet potato fries? Absolutely delicious. We also tried the Rasta pasta with added salmon. The pasta itself was very flavorful, and the salmon was juicy and cooked perfectly. The only thing that threw me off a bit was the cold vegetables on top of the hot pasta--like the cucumbers. It's possible that's part of the style, but it just wasn't something I'm used to. Still, overall, the dish tasted really good. I'm actually a little disappointed I didn't get the oxtails this time--that's usually the true test of a great Jamaican spot. If they can make a tougher cut of meat fall-off-the-bone tender, you know they're doing it right. I'll definitely be back to give those a try. For now, it was a decent experience with some standout items. I'm open to going back and trying something different, but at the moment, Jamaica House still has my heart. read more

I placed an order on grub hub around 650pm. My order was accepted and pickup time was 710pm- 720pm. I arrived at 7pm. The restaurant is small inside and only 2 people were waiting on the people dining inside. I stood at the front of the counter for about five minutes before anyone asked me anything. Once the middle age looking lady greeted me with an attitude and asked what was the name on my order. I told her and minutes later she asked again. Long story short, I was asked four times what I ordered and the name. Theere is a small waiting room area to wait for your food. Also, your order is placed on a table and sometimes your name is called out and sometimes it's not. I witness this several times while waiting for my order. I only ordered the oxtail Mac and cheese egg rolls and yea mon wings. The oxtail meat was tender inside the egg roll and had decent flavor.The wing dings were dry and overcooked to me. I had a mother- daughter dinner at Irie Ting with my daughter last week & we really enjoyed our dining experience at the restaurant. The food was mind blowingly delicious. We literally wanted to inhale the food, if that was humanely possible The oxtail/Mac & cheese Eggrolls we ordered were sturdy & flavorful. They could basically be a meal all alone they were so filling. The oxtail & curried goat platters we ordered were generously portioned & full of flavor. The meat was cooked to perfection. It was tender & juicy. Our server was attentive, courteous & extremely helpful & respectful during our time dining. She always approached our table with a warm & generous smile. The decor & ambiance of the restaurant really made you feel like you had stepped into a restaurant in Jamaica. I was so there for all the island vibes! We had catering from Irie Ting for lunch at work today in recognition of Black History Month. I usually work remote, but I drove half an hour to work for this one! The spread was generous, with a full range of items to select from, including beef patties, mac and cheese, plantains, rice and beans, jerk chicken, oxtails, and curried shrimp. My favorites were the beef patties and mac and cheese. The mac had a crisp crust of cheese on top - yum! I also tried oxtail for the first time - pretty good! I don't eat chicken or shrimp personally but heard good things about both from my coworkers. Best Jamaican in Richmond that I have tried. I highly recommend getting a side of oxtail if you're debating. We started with the wings, which was full of flavor due to the tingaling jerk chicken sauce. For our entree, we ordered a pulled oxtail sandwich, jerk chicken, and a side of oxtail. The oxtail was the best thing that I had tried at Irie Ting and I was surprised by how much came in a side order. It heats up well if you have leftovers. I was not that big a fan of the pulled oxtail sandwich in comparison to the oxtail since it was a bit drier - but it was still full of flavor. The service was also friendly and we decided to try again a few weeks later and ordered brown stew chicken, curry goat, Jamaican beef patty, and an oxtail entree. I'd recommend the side of oxtail over the entree since it seems to be more bang for buck. The Jamaican beef patty lacked in filling, and I was a bit disappointed by that. We were visiting Richmond for the first time and this was our first dinner in town. We don't have access to Jamaican or Caribbean food where we're from so we were looking forward to this meal. From their website and menu, this seems like a fun, welcoming place. There was ample free street parking nearby when we arrived just before 6pm on Friday evening. The food was decent but the service needs improvement. Our waitress never smiled and had a poor attitude from the get-go. We arrived on-time for our reservation, didn't have any questions about the menu, and always spoke to her with a smile (despite internally feeling off-put by her demeanor) so I'm not sure what the issue was. Normally, I would have some empathy--you never know what someone is going through and the service industry is rough. However, the restaurant was pretty empty (so no cause for being overwhelmed) AND she was clearly laughing with her fellow staff members throughout our dinner (so I don't know why she couldn't show the least bit of hospitality when waiting on us). The restaurant did have lots of food delivery people coming in/out to pick up orders but other staff members were primarily handling those. My husband ordered the jerk chicken and I ordered the escovitch. I didn't see other photos of the escovitch on Yelp. In the photo I posted of my meal, the escovitch is served with rice/peas and boiled cabbage, and behind the fish is a small dish of a brothy sauce and a small dish of the pickles that are typically served on top of escovitch. We enjoyed our meals in regards to taste and portion size so it was even more disappointing that the lack of hospitality/customer service left us feeling unwelcome. read more

Irie Ting Jamaican Grill has been on my list of places to try for a couple of years now so while my daughter and I were in Richmond over the weekend, we headed over to try them out! Thankfully, there was ample seating when we arrived so we dined in and scanned the QR code on the table to access the menu. With this being Jamaican cuisine, they offered mostly all of the items that you would normally see at a Jamaican restaurant. Our server, Tiara, was very nice and patiently waited as we decided on what we wanted to order. Since everything sounded so good, we decided on the Curry Chicken, Oxtails, a side of Jerk Chicken, Plantains and Macaroni and Cheese. The meals were served with Rice & Peas and Cabbage. The food took about 30 mins to prepare, which Tiara mentioned after we ordered, but that was no problem at all. When it arrived, everything looked amazing! I ordered the small size oxtail portion which came with 6 oxtail pieces and it was more than enough! Everything tasted phenomenal! The Jerk Chicken was spicy but not overpowering. The Oxtails were tender and flavorful and the Curry Chicken had the perfect amount of curry seasoning! The Mac & Cheese was just as great and we learned our server, Tiara, actually made it! We definitely gave her props lol! If I had to give one critique, I would've loved the cabbage to be served on the side versus under the rice but both were very good. Overall, I may have found my favorite Jamaican restaurant and even though Richmond isn't close, I will gladly take the drive again to eat at Irie Ting! This is my second time here because my fiance was curious to try it despite the fact that I wasn't impressed the first time. The decor is actually cute, and the food was actually impressive this time, but the customer service left me feeling unsettled. Our waitress was Donna-Kay and she was the sweetest and very helpful, however another waitress, Dan, came over to take our order and she wouldn't smile, gave us nasty looks and I honestly watched her gave my fiancé a look of disgust. At one point, I thought maybe something was on our face or we did something wrong to get the treatment we were receiving. To make matters worse, I think she is either the manager or Team Lead. I would never return or recommend if this is standard customer service patrons will receive. This was quite strange because I watched her go over to the guys next to us and she was quite outgoing and was smiling a lot. Based on the other reviews, this is common. We made sure we knew our order down, because they're known for being impatient and rude. They would definitely have better reviews if they were nicer, because the food was amazing. They had my friend stand outside of the restaurant in the 100 degree heat, which is such an odd request of a customer with the extreme heat warning. Private event or not, it's not a good look. The food was delicious though. My husband got a combo platter with various meats. The oxtail was mostly bone. I ordered the curry chicken, but my order was mistaken for jerk chicken. Upon telling the waitress that I ordered curry chicken, she questioned me if I really did. This kinda threw me off because I know what I ordered. I opted for the Island Fried (white meat 4.2/5 plain, 4.3/5 with the ginger sauce and 5/5 with their homemade jerk which I highly recommend) with rice/peas (2.9/5 the rice was a little over cooked)and cabbage (3.8/5). Hands down the best oxtail I've ever had!!! Not even kidding!! Like seriously they better keep that recipe locked up cuzzz the gravy/sauce they use for their oxtails is AMAZING! It's literally fall off the bone oxtails in a savory and sweet sauce, I would buy the sauce alone! There is a great ratio of meat on the oxtails, and very rich. Now for the food...this was my first visit and they offer a lot of choices from breakfast to lunch/dinner options. They were made to order and I did enjoy them just wish they had a little more oxtail meat as it seemed the mac & cheese outweighed the oxtail. The presentation was a 10 out of 10 but the overall taste for me was a 6.5/7. Some of the breast pieces were a little dry to me and the flavor was just ok. The sauce was too watery and I was not a fan of the rice. It was missing something, maybe a little more coconut milk.....not sure I was picking up on the thyme, allspice either. Finally got a chance to come and try this place out for lunch a couple days ago. The restaurant itself is nice and cozy inside and I enjoyed the overall vibe. My server was amazing, she was very helpful and gave me some solid recommendations on the food and seemed like she actually liked what she was serving. I took her advice and ordered the oxtail on cabbage and rice. The food was really good and you could tell that the food was cooked with love. The flavors were amazing and strong. I also ordered a side of coco bread and it was also really tasty and a perfect side with my meal. I can't remember her name exact but I think it was Tia or something with a T. She definitely made my dining experience special by making me Rum punch which was amazing. I then proceeded to order the family style(it's a different name on menu) meal which allowed me to have two meats, cabbage and rice and peas. My two meat choices were curry chicken and goat because these are my two go to meats for Jamaican food. They both had good flavor to them. My only thing was I wish the goat had more meat and less fat and I wish both meats were in more gravy and less oil. If you like curry I would definitely suggest to get either one of these dishes but just know the curry goat is spicer than the chicken. The plantains were a little drier than I would have liked. I wish they were the sweeter ones. The coco bread was nice and fresh but the cornbread was kinda dry. It had good flavor but it was dry. Not sure if it was because I was there in the later part of the night. Overall this place is cute and quaint. Nice homey feel. I did go to the bathroom which is kinda small but it was clean. All I could say is ( this is MY EXPERIENCE) if I could spend the night I'd put a bed in the middle of the floor. To ME they can cook and make you feel as if you're in Jamaica. This place wasn't terrible but it lacked what I wanted from a Jamaican place. I ordered the goat curry and jerk chicken combo and if I'm honest, Irie Ting's version of jerk chicken just wasn't for me. Whereas most places marinate the chicken and then grill it, the version here seemed almost like baked bbq chicken with sauce dumped on top at the end. If the chicken was grilled, it was lost with all of the sauce on it. The chicken was also very dried out, which surprised me because it was dark meat. The goat curry was very good, however, and all of the meat was incredibly tender. The rice was decent but I also didn't care for the cabbage. Overall I was not satisfied with my dining experience here. Arrived around 5pm on a Thursday afternoon. It wasn't busy inside but you could see a lot of pickup orders had been made. The server came over and said she was filling in until our server was ready and then shortly came back and said sike she would be our server. She seemed confused all night. Ordered the jerk wings and jerk egg rolls for an appetizer. Both of which had no significant Jamaican flavor. I've been to Jamaica several times and have Jamaicans in my family. The chicken was over cooked and drenched in a flavorless sauce and the egg rolls were just bland. The sauce tasted like duck sauce with some jerk thrown in. No jerk spice at all in the chicken. I wanted to leave and that point and should have but I decided to stay for an entree to see if it got better. Ordered the oxtail and rice and my sister had the jerk salmon burger. Again both were just bland. The oxtails were bad pieces that a restaurant shouldn't have served. Little to no meat on the tails. The rice was absolutely nasty. No flavor and too mushy. I took one bite and that was it. And the burger again was bland. The best thing was the sweet potato fries. Which honestly cannot be messed up. Our waitress may have been overwhelmed or what have you cause she wasn't attentive to the table. I had to ask for water and then she forgot and moved on to another task for about 10 mins and I had to ask for the water again.
