This place is a vibe!! The decor just make you feel like you are on an island.... I ordered oxtails and they were perfectly tender and flavorful. The rice, peas and cabbage also very good.

This is my go to place when I travel home for authentic Jamaican food. I got the pick two oxtails and jerk chicken and my family got the curry goat and jerk chicken. I didn't get my family's food pictures. The portions were large and the food was flavorful as always. The oxtails were very tender. We ordered our food online for pickup. When I arrived they were busy and there was no parking so I rode around until I found a spot. When I entered, the young lady appeared a little frustrated by the crowd. I asked a question because I wanted to add a new order but decided not to after she brushed me off. I have been living in Texas for a while now and when I visit, we usually eat in so I didn't know what the process was for takeout. I understand that they were busy but rudeness is not acceptable. Yes I will visit again because everyone can have a bad day.

First time I ever had bad food my pregnant wife also had island fried chicken and had a bad sour taste.

My friend and I were visiting Richmond and decided for an early birthday dinner we wanted to have some Jamaican food. We were looking for authentic and the two spots we preferred weren't close to where we were so we decided to give Carena's a try. Like any restaurant experience-- it begins when you walk in. We were greeted by the man behind the bar, told him we were dining in and didn't get greeted by anyone else for a bit. When we were finally seated we automatically noticed the fans were blowing on high and this is in December. There was no need for EVERY fan to be on. After being seated, truthfully we did not see a waiter for over 15 minutes. No water, no "we'll be with you in a second", nothing. Waiters came to every table around us but never approached us. Most of the wait staff seemed to be having a bad day as well. Nobody wanted to help you. When our waiter finally came to the table, he took our orders. We should've gotten up and left as we were looking for other places to dine but were hungry and had already been waiting long enough. Trying to get our waiters attention was difficult, the food coming out took just as long and once again we contemplated getting up and leaving but didn't feel right doing so -- being that we had already ordered. With the fans blowing as high as they were, our food being hot didn't stand a chance. My friend who had the oxtails commented that they were decent. I think we probably took two bites and packed everything up. At that point we were over it. Not sure if we'll give it another try in the future, but if we do-- hopefully we'll have a completely different experience.

Placed an online order. Their food is decent. Jerk chicken was very spicy and kinda dry. Next time I'll get dark meat. Plantain were good. Fruit punch was too sweet. Staff - Rude!

Amazing food, I was nervous to get anymore Jamaican food from around Richmond but this is great. The food was hot and fresh and the cabbage was cooked to perfection. Good prices for the portions.

The oxtails were delicious. We orders them with extra extra gravy and it was barely any graze on them. The oxtails do not come with plantains. I received 3 small pieces and 2of the 3 were burnt. Being from out of town I wasn't familiar with which we trance I needed to go to and you can't walk to through from the call in line. It was raining and I got wet. I also had to ask for my drink that o had paid for. The customer service is bad but the food is very good.

I am on the patio at Carena's and the breeze is nice! Glad the hot weather eased up.

The parking lot is small, but you can park next door at Panera and walk over or any of the places nearby. There is an apartment building under construction on this property and it is right behind the restaurant. Plan ahead and come early. It is right off the highway exit 60 west off the Chippingham Hwy. there is also an online order ahead and pickup window on the patio for to go orders. Very convenient. The food was amazing.

The food was delicious and tasty. The service was great and the waitress was attentive. The ambiance of the place represented the Caribbean. This will be one of our go to spots.

If you're craving authentic Jamaican cuisine, this is a spot you'll want to keep on your radar. It's a small place but it's very cute. The staff was very friendly as well. From the first bite, everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and true to traditional Jamaican cooking. The oxtails were incredibly tender and packed with rich, savory flavor. The cabbage was perfectly cooked and seasoned just right, and the rice was a standout on its own--you could really taste the coconut milk, which added such a smooth, delicious touch. The curry chicken was another highlight. The meat was so tender it practically fell off the bone, and the flavor was bold without being overwhelming. But the real star of the meal for me was the salmon dish. It completely stole the show. The fish was cooked to perfection--tender, flaky, and full of flavor--and the cream sauce tied everything together beautifully. It was hands down my favorite dish of the night. OH!! I forgot about the coconut cloud cake... OMG!! I should have gotten two or three of them to take home. Even though it's a bit of a drive for me, it's one I'll gladly make again whenever I'm in the mood for amazing Jamaican food. We'll definitely be back sooner rather than later!

When I say the oxtails fall off the bone, I mean that. Flavorful, authentic, and cooked the way it's supposed to be. You can taste the difference. A lot of these other Jamaican restaurants out here are cooking for Americans and think people don't know the real taste. And let's be real--when you have people from other cultures cooking the food, it's hard to call it authentic. I just don't understand how it can be authentic if it's not being cooked by someone from the culture. Now I will say, compared to some other spots, like Karina (paired up with Jamaica House), they did upgrade and got bigger, and I respect that. But even there, you got a lot of Mexicans cooking the food, so it still takes away from the authenticity for me. Overall, I'm giving Jamaica House a solid 3 stars. The food--especially those oxtails--is definitely better than a lot of places out here that deserve zero, one, or no stars at all. If you want real flavor and something close to authentic, this is one of the spots to check out.

This time when I ordered my chicken soup, the young girl behind the register handed it to me and said "be careful." I didn't think nothing of it, but I made sure to hold it upright. The top came off and the whole soup spilled all inside my brand new Genesis G70. I called to let her know what happened and all she said was, "sorry to hear that." No concern, no effort to fix it. So I went back up there with the cup to show her. First of all, her attitude was nasty--face all balled up. When I showed her the cup, she told me the trash was behind the building. She didn't even want to take it from me. No hospitality at all. No customer service. Nothing. Then when she gave me another soup, I didn't check it until I left--but it had NO meat in it. Just straight water. I will never eat from here again. And I'm Jamaican--born in Jamaica, raised in New York. I know good food and good service, and this was neither. The attitude, the service, everything about that experience was nasty and bad-minded. Do better.

Overall, it was okay--definitely some hits and a few misses. Staff was nice and the place was cute. They had a packed house on a Wednesday night. We ordered a variety of items to really get a feel for the menu. I was especially excited to try the oxtail and mac & cheese egg rolls since everyone raves about them, but honestly, they were just mediocre. Not bad, just not as flavorful or memorable as I expected. On the positive side, the fish sandwich was really good--nice and not spicy with great flavor. The wings were also a win: tender, well-seasoned, and cooked just right. And the sweet potato fries? Absolutely delicious. We also tried the Rasta pasta with added salmon. The pasta itself was very flavorful, and the salmon was juicy and cooked perfectly. The only thing that threw me off a bit was the cold vegetables on top of the hot pasta--like the cucumbers. It's possible that's part of the style, but it just wasn't something I'm used to. Still, overall, the dish tasted really good. I'm actually a little disappointed I didn't get the oxtails this time--that's usually the true test of a great Jamaican spot. If they can make a tougher cut of meat fall-off-the-bone tender, you know they're doing it right. I'll definitely be back to give those a try. For now, it was a decent experience with some standout items. I'm open to going back and trying something different, but at the moment, Jamaica House still has my heart.

The first time I went was last week Wednesday in the afternoon. A very nice young man took my order. When I asked for bake and shark the woman who I assume is the owner came up to the front and told me bake and shark is only available every other Saturday. I asked her if it would be available that coming Saturday and she said no, next week, that coming Saturday would be meat pies. She was nice enough this day. My first visit I ordered doubles, curry chicken and stew beans and buss up shut. The doubles were pretty good, the curry was 2 chicken legs swimming in what was more like a ton of watery broth in which my beans got completely lost. The curry flavors were not very developed. There was no aloo. The roti was the best thing I ordered that day. I did not come that Saturday as instructed but I returned yesterday. Yelp and Google states the business opens at 11:30. I walked up to the door at 12:12 and it was locked. The sign on the door states they open at 12:30 on Saturdays. I sat in my car until 12:40 and went back in. There were already people in line being helped by the same lady from last week. When it was my turn I asked for bake and shark and she told me "next Saturday". WOW. I drove all this way specifically for that. At this point I'm already disappointed so I ask her what she does have. She tells me to "read the board". Then she says she will help someone else and come back to me. When I don't respond she says "HELLO" as if speaking to a child. Thankfully, the lady with the purple hair is nice and professional. When it's my turn to order I order sorrel, pholourie, doubles, curry chicken and spinach and roti. Curry chicken is my favorite so I want to give it another try. With these 2 visits alone I've spent about $70 so far. I get in my car and open the bag with the pholourie to eat on the ride home. They're ice cold greasy and soggy. How? The place just opened and I just walked out! I get home and try the curry chicken. Watery flavorless broth again. No aloo again. This time the chicken is not done. My spinach is drowning in this broth just like the beans because for some reason it's all put into one container with no separation. The doubles are a sloppy mess but edible. Once again the buss up shut is the best part of the whole meal. This was a waste of time, money, and gas. This is not a good representation of Trini food. I don't think I will return here. **UPDATE** I updated my review to one star after this wicked lady replied. This idiotic fool is messaging me over and over about my review! I haven't messaged her back not even one time. She's clearly nuts. Notice she never said anything I wrote was untrue. There's a huge difference between pink chicken (ie: smoked meat) and bloody slimy chicken that's clear in some spots. You are selling food to the public and you think chicken is always pink no matter how long you cook it? WTH?! Sounds like food poisoning and salmonella to me. And please tell me where is the big chicken?? You're serving drumsticks! Secondly, pholourie literally takes 1-2 minutes to fry- why would anyone fry it then let it just sit in a COOLER???? Who's expecting fried dough to be hot for hours?? I expect it to be freshly made when I order it duh! So she's cooking the entire menu all at once and just serving it, cold and raw. Disgusting. The standards and attitude on this woman are both gross. Eat this crap at your own risk.
