I never thought I would be writing this. I grew up wanting to be a veterinarian and once deeply admired Dr. Murphy. I even shadowed her as child. Unfortunately, my experience surrounding the euthanasia of my dog Paisley completely shattered that respect. Paisley was my best friend. I picked her out, named her, and loved her for her entire life. I found a tumor on her over a year ago and repeatedly told my family, offered to schedule vet visits, cover all costs, and handle transportation. Those offers were refused. I was not informed when the decision was finally made to euthanize her. I had to find out from someone else. I was promised the opportunity to be involved, to ask questions, and to be present for the discussion and goodbye. Instead, I was forced to watch over FaceTime while Dr. Murphy and my mother repeatedly left the room to discuss matters without me. When I tried to ask if they could wait so I could be included, I was talked over and told they would proceed anyway. The rest of my family was given notice and allowed to be present. I was intentionally excluded from my own dog's final moments. Regardless of circumstances, the lack of empathy, communication, and basic compassion shown to someone grieving the loss of a deeply bonded animal was devastating. This experience caused immense emotional harm, and I would never recommend this practice to friends or loved ones. Paisley deserved better. So did I. Edit: I also find it concerning that this practice appears to ask clients to edit older reviews, which has the effect of burying negative feedback. That feels inappropriate and raises serious concerns about transparency. read more

My furr baby woke up extremely sick one Morning and my regular vet could not see her. I was advised to take her to the ER. I called Caring Hands animal Hospital and the could see her in a hour. We were seen pretty much immediately once we walked in the door. In about a hour we were leaving with a diagnosed and 4 medications. I was extremely grateful. About 4 days later we started seeing her improve. They want us to bring her back for bloodwork on the 7th day to be sure things are back to normal. Dear Useless Hands, Just want to remind you that you accepted the duty to care for my animal the minute you decided to treat my animal. That means caring for my animal to the best of your abilities, educating the owner, and informing the owner IN ADVANCE if you intend to change or stop treatment. The minute you decided to treat/prescribe medication to my pet, this made you responsible for my pet's wellbeing. I have included a screenshot of the email I received from Dr. Murphy on January 23. In this email, Dr. Murphy states that my dog, who has cushings disease should be retested every 4-6 months. The last time my dog got tested was on April 28, 2023. Not once was I ever informed in person or in writing that medication would abruptly be stopped if my dog was not retested at exactly 4 months. To be clear, 4 months is not until August 28. Today is August 10th. However, upon awakening this morning. I received an email, but it's not from a doctor. It's from a technician named Savannah, indicating that my dog's medication was not prescribed because she needs to be retested. Last I checked Virginia law, an LVT is not authorized to prescribe medication, so they should not have the authority to suddenly stop medication. Please reference email from savannah below. So, it is my only conclusion that Dr. Wade, the last vet to treat my dog, is the one who authorized this decision. A negligent, unethical, and disgusting decision. Not once did Dr. Wade call me to inform me that she would abruptly stop prescribing medication. My dog has cushings disease and stopping medication is harmful to her health. The message from Savannah on the 3rd did not mention anything that they would stop prescribing medication, but why is a technician calling me instead of a doctor? Is a technician making decisions on my dog's health? Who is responsible for prescribing my dog's medication? A Virginia licensed vet decided that completely stopping treatment altogether is better THAN keeping her at the current dosage because they needed a retest to make sure she was at right dosage even though she was tested on APRIL 28TH? Don't call yourself caring hands because you don't care for the wellbeing of my animal. All you want is for me to pay $359.50 for a test that could have waited another 2 months. When I spoke to your manager this morning, I asked her to make this statement "It is an ethical practice to abruptly stop an animals' medication instead of keeping them at their current dosage." She refused. I am currently waiting for a return call from the Virginia department of Health professions veterinary board of medicine because I am curious to know who is providing your licenses. Every time I called to get prescription for medication such as gabapentin or meloxicam which are both controlled substances, you give it out carelessly without asking to see my dog but to provide her medication that her life depends on, a test is required or treatment will be stopped? Change your name to Useless Hands or Unethical Hands, just fits you better. read more

I have been using this practice for about 9 or 10 years now for my cats and dogs. They are expensive and always try to get you to have expensive tests done. Last time I brought my dog in they told me just to drop off a stood sample sometime. Well one of my dogs had an accident in the house this morning so I decided to bring it in. The lady at the desk asked what it was for. I explained that I did not have a sample the last check up so I was bringing it now. I made the mistake of saying it was runny. The receptionist said that I would have to make an appointment and that they would not take the sample. Well I am not even 100% sure which dog it was in the first place so I said fine and left. Wouldn't it be better to just run the test to see if there was even an issue? So no I will not be bringing my dog in just for you to make some money for an office visit and maybe I'll find another vet for my many pets as well. read more

I'm feeling let down. I brought my dogs for a nail trim, and one of them barked at the vet because she dislikes the process. I'm not blaming the vet, as that's not her fault. However, I'm disappointed with the front desk for discussing my dog loudly. I generally enjoy this place, and I sincerely hope this was just a one-time negative experience. read more

My family has been going here since I was little, so of course when I got my own pets I chose to take my fur babies here. I moved about 45 minutes from this location recently but will make the drive without hesitation because of how compassionate, loving, and patient they are. Excellent staff and care. I recently moved back into the area and was weary of finding a new vet for my dog, Bones - so much so that I would plan his visits around visiting my mother in another part of the state to continue using his former doctors. Unfortunately on my first visit to Caring Hands, he was found to have a very aggressive form of Lymphoma and I lost him only a few short weeks later. Throughout the process, the staff and doctors were fantastic. They returned every call I made with questions regarding outlook, changing dosage for medications, etc, and would always call a day or two after we were in for an appointment just to see how he was holding up. When exploring options for treatments they never once bowled over or dismissed any suggestions or questions I had about things I had read or found in relation to alternative or lesser known treatment possibilities. On one particular occasion, I was worried my inquiry would result in a referral and required trip to an oncologist, adding expenses to a growing number. Instead, they simply told me they would reach out themselves and get the information I needed. When the time finally came to let my little buddy go, I could not have asked for a better experience. I always told myself I would do an at-home euthanasia when the time came, but after it was all said and done, I wouldn't change a thing. The decorum and professionalism shown that day made everything just a little bit easier. While I don't currently have a need for their services, when the time comes where I have another furry friend in my life, I will undoubtedly return. read more

I have been coming here for about 8 years when I just had one dog and now I have three. All the vets and techs are very kind and caring. I just had to take my little Yorkie, Chance in the other day because he jumped out of my arms and hit the tile floor very hard and was limping. He was not his usual self but he wasn't crying. They gave me the option of having x-rays done or trying the anti-inflammatory first. I choose that option and he's getting better each day. We are so incredibly grateful for the staff at our primary location in Centreville, and especially the team at Bristow who saved our 15-week-old puppy, Merlin's, life. When Merlin very suddenly becoming gravely ill, CHAH Bristow was the only bet we called who could fit him in for an emergency appointment. Not only did they fit him in for that initial appointment (they spent two hours with him on an otherwise very busy day for the practice to make sure he got the care he needed) they continued to make time for him throughout the week for re-evaluations, x-rays, and intensive care. It was a very scary time and we weren't sure he would pull through. Merlin ended up having abdominal surgery. They called us multiple times to let us know how he was doing throughout the surgery and texted us photos updates after he woke up. He went back the next day for more IV support and we received photo updates and we so appreciated they time they took to give us these updates. With aggressive support post-op, our tough little pup is back home and back to his spunky little self. Everyone we interacted with (front desk staff, technicians, and doctors) was so amazing and Merlin gained quite the fan club here who cared for him as if he were their own puppy. Dr. Dean deserves special recognition for her incredible bedside manner. She was so legitimately concerned for Merlin and was so excited when he started improving. She even called us on her day off just to check on him. We cannot thank CHAH Bristow enough for what they've done for Merlin, we will now have many more happy, healthy years with him thanks to his amazing team! read more

Caring Hands does it all for our kitty family. When we first got our Gracie girl a year ago from the pound, Caring Hands was one of the recommended vets (also among the cheapest) and I'm so glad we chose them! They took such good care of her and sent photo updates. When our kitty Binx died they sent us a card and it meant a lot to us. We now have two new additions to the family, Rocky and Benjie. They gave our kittens lots of love before they even began getting to business and you can tell they love what they do. They have been seen by Alison Gemmill and Jenna Dean and they're both fantastic. Our vet tech today was also very kind. They even clipped their nails and sent us home with a free trial of some prescription kibble and a tooth brush/gel for Gracie's teeth. Do NOT recommend. This vet used to be helpful, compassionate. Now it has become a high priced factory. When my senior dog & family needed care while out of town, It took over 3.5 hours to return our call to tell me management has gone home for the evening. I was given a PC answer from a very kind nurse. Our dog passed shortly after. We were looking for help in this process & you let us ALL down. Blamed it on policy. Funny how we found another vet who was willing to help us & our pet. Their "policy" was clearly different! It was not their PC policy. Thank you for the call 5 days later inquiring how you can help & to check on my pet. (Insert sarcasm) It was an insult!!!!! Once again no compassion. As a 17 year member of this community which has had 3 pets in your care-NO LONGER!! I felt so sad when i saw my dog's eye etching, I bring him to the vet 4 times during this month, i was happy at the third time when my dog was getting better, but after two days he had same problem again, I brought him back to check again, they did test on his eye, and told me everything was fine, they prescribed eye cream for him, but how come he has more etching ? I don't mind spending money for his health, but they did a lot test on him, and all their treatments did not work, for 4 visits! read more

I called Caring Hands and not only did they start the process of her wellness checkup, they also referred me to someone who would dog sit her and make sure she was nourished, and cared for. Knock on wood, I have not had any emergencies or serious health issues to deal with, but I know everybody would be in good hands. The vet techs or assistants always smile and really seem to enjoy their work. Our doctor, Dr Tennant is the best! She takes the time to talk and love on our animals. Just moved to the area- this is the best vet I've ever been to out of the last 4 vets I've used. They were so good with my dog who is very anxious around new people and even examined him on the floor to keep him calm and gave him treats! I saw Dr. Jenna Dean who was very patient with me and knowledgeable answering every last question I had, and I had a lot being a new dog mom! I never felt rushed out the door. I appreciated her so much as she has been the only vet I've had that explained things to me and different treatment and medication options. She also did not try to charge me for additional tests or unnecessary tests like Banfield tried to do. LOVE this place so glad we found an everlasting vet, thank you Dr. Dean!! read more

Caring Hands has been so supportive, responsive and helpful in treating our dog. She suffers from a handful of chronic conditions, of which the staff always diagnoses in a timely manner, and recommends the correct treatments required. Dr. Abraham is extremely knowledgable in both preventative and diagnostic care, and is always focused on recommending the best long-term solution for our family. The technicians and front desk staff have also always been extremely helpful and considerate during our visits. They efficiently relay information to the required doctors, and are always available to provide scheduling and support over the phone. The only critique I have is that the costs of our visits are sometimes unknown until we reach the front desk, and are also unexpectedly high. However, I imagine this is more of an industry-wide issue, and not specific to Caring Hands. read more

The incision is healing wonderfully and she has been there every step of the way - patiently answering my flurry of questions and e-mailing me back each time I send a photo update. My wife and I have been taking our dog here for years and they have always been great to us and our dog Chloe. Recently, we had to euthanize our dog after complications from old age, cancer, and surgeries. We called on a Saturday morning and they professionally answered our questions about euthanasia. We scheduled a time and upon arrival, they quickly escorted us back to a beautiful/tranquil (home-like) room where we were able to be with our dog throughout the entire dying process. I was very impressed with the staff, their courtesy, and patience as we said our goodbyes to our beloved Chloe. The doctor even went as far as holding our Chloe's paw as she transitioned into the next life. We were sad that day; however, highly impressed by the caring nature of the doctors, tech's, and staff at the Bristow, VA facility. read more

If you want the fastest service and a cookie-cutter approach to animal care. This is your place. If you want to be involved in the decision of what tests, vaccines, and treatments are necessary before they're provided and billed, maybe not the ideal location. But even if it's just a cold business model, they make an effort here at customer relations that I like - emails and mail reminders, phone followups.
