I just left Pender Vet in Manassas, and I honestly feel so grateful. My girl Luna (German Shepherd) hasn't had the best experiences with vets before. A lot of places just didn't show much compassion. I walked in nervous, but this visit was completely different. They brought us straight back to a room so Luna wouldn't get overwhelmed. The receptionist with the side-shave and glasses was unbelievably kind and even checked me out right in the exam room so Luna didn't have to go back through the lobby. They were amazing and so thoughtful. They're super organized too. They gave me typed notes that were actually helpful and clear. And Dr. Mayo was incredible and literally sat on the floor with me and Luna for about 45 minutes, just letting her warm up and taking everything at her pace. I've never experienced that level of patience at a vet. Maritza, the vet tech, was also so gentle and calm with her. I walked out feeling relieved and genuinely thankful. Can I give 10 stars? This place is owned by the larger Pender group, but it is run by a real vet and run well. My experience has been more like an old fashioned vet practice than a corporate vet practice. I have so many good things to say I don't know where to start. I drive my 3 screaming cats 30 minutes to see dr. Mayo. Here is why - She doesn't over schedule her appointment so she takes time with pets and their people. I don't have to wait. She actually explains things to the lay person so you understand what is going on with your pet and what her plan of treatment is. We had a complex problem with my cat And she came out to my car to chat, making even a covid experience very personable. She makes recommendations that are useful. She is obviously up to date on the latest studies and vet science and applies the knowledge in her practice. She is very experienced and really knows cats, I assume dogs as welI. She is also compassionate and gentle with pets, and their people. This is really important too, as I lost a pet. She knew things were bad and went out of her way to call me later in the evening with test results so I wouldn't have to wait until the next day. That is all part of a very high level of communication with owners. The staff is great too. Informed, professional and accurate. The vet techs have been great, displaying the characteristics that live up to Mayo's standards. I believe Dr. Mayo runs the place, and she does so well. This is the vet to go to. It's very painful for me to recount my experience with Dr. Mayo of Pender Vet, Manassas, but I have wanted to since it happened. I will never forgive myself for trusting him to her care. Thumbs started losing weight. I usually go to Pender Vet in Fairfax but this time I went to the Manassas location because I could get an appointment sooner. First of all I concur with D.S., here on Yelp, who complained that the intake process was worthless because everything that she/he had told the Vet Tech had to be repeated to the Vet!? But I would add that some things seem to have been reported exactly the opposite of what I had said! For example, their notes on him said that he had diarrhea SINCE he had been adopted about a year ago - and that was not true! I had never said that!? I was given an estimate of $403.17: $70 - exam, Drontal - $28.17, $79 - FELV & FIV blood tests, Idexx Senior Profile - Standard CBC - $226. I questioned the need for the FELV/FIV test as he had been tested at the shelter, and I pointed out that he was only about 5 yrs and was not a Senior. I also explained that I was unemployed because of the pandemic and asked if there was anything they could do because of that, and I explained that he was a Rescued cat that I planned to rehome, so that if they knew of any rescues that could help with him, I would consider turning him over to them. I left that day without getting the Senior bloodwork but did get everything else and I was to call back after a certain amount of time if he wasn't getting any better. Meanwhile I got the results of the FELV/FIV test - which was negative. I let them know that I wasn't happy about having had to pay for the FELV/FIV test when I had told them he had been tested and was negative and I asked about getting that $79 refunded - but I had trouble with the doctor returning my calls. When I finally did speak to her she did not agree with my request for a $79 refund. I told her that I had decided to get the bloodwork even though I couldn't really afford it and wanted to make an appointment for that. Then she told me that she had "remembered" that she herself had a Rescue there, through the clinic, that could take him in. So I made an appointment to take him to get the bloodwork for the next day. I had been hand feeding him and I took some of the things I was feeding him that he really liked with me. She came out with a form to transfer ownership of him to the Pender Vet Center Manassas. Even though I had decided I would pay for that bloodwork, I thought it would be better for him to be taken in by her Rescue as he could then get whatever other things he might need to help him get better - so I signed the paper and handed him to Dr Mayo. She said she would call me that day to let me know how the blood work turned out. That evening I received a phone message from her saying she hadn't had time to call me that afternoon but that there were some abnormalities. She said that his kidneys were ok but his liver wasn't great and that there was no specific test for FIP but she thought that's probably what he had and that she was going to "euthanize" him and probably wouldn't wait till the next day but would do it that evening. I immediately called back - and she had already "euthanized" him!? She did not know what he had and even if it was FIP, there are treatments for that!? Plus that's a highly transmissible disease and she knows I have other cats - and none of them were sick!? Plus she killed him without talking to me first - knowing how I felt- probably because she had the paper I had signed - but I had only done that believing that was the best way for him to get all the medical care needed to help him. Unfortunately what Dr Mayo did was the exact opposite! She did not really know what was wrong with him and I believe that she decided it was too much trouble to care for him - probably mostly because he needed to be fed. Like maybe it was near the end of the day and she realized someone had to hand feed him and she didn't want to take him home but couldn't leave him there alone - so she made a decision to end his life. I know she will never admit it but I do not believe he had to be euthanized! He had been in my care up until that day and I know that even though I was assist feeding him - he wanted to eat! After telling me she/they would do all they could to treat him and then try to find him a home and if a home wasn't found he could live there at the vet center - she did nothing at all for him! She did what was easiest for her. I felt betrayed. To this day I feel as though I was kicked hard in the stomach. And please remember that she was telling someone with other cats that it was probably FIP - a very transmissible disease!? I think that's irresponsible! I regret it has taken me a while to write about this, but again, even to this day, it pains me terribly to think about all of this! I'm so sorry to Thumbs! If it weren't for The staff here and at DCAH, I surely would have lost my mind by now. The professionalism of these people and their capacity to love my pets as much as me is unmatched anywhere else. In such difficult times, we must ALL exercise more patience than most people are capable of. We might have to wait longer than usual, but we're not the ones spending 12 hrs a day in a mask. I drive from WV to this hospital and will continue to recommend them to everyone I know. My Daisy was abandoned at PWAC at 11 yrs old. It worked out perfectly and I got an appointment that same day, which saved me the Emergency Visit fee at Pender. They took special precaution during COVID to keep us all safe, but were patient, attentive and listened carefully to my concerns before Ziki went in for his visit. They carefully described the diagnosis and treatment plan options and took their time to answer all my questions. Their experience is extensive and impressive, but it's the fact that they actually care about their clients -- furry and human alike -- that keeps me coming back. I've never had vets so thorough, communicative, and patient. I've also never had vets follow-up with me via email when I can't be reached by phone, or call me even when it is after hours for them! Their efforts truly are above and beyond. When my husband and I purchased a home recently, we refused to move too far away. We want the best for our furbabies! My cats are usually patients at the Pender Fairfax campus, but I took one kitty to this new Manassas location when Fairfax was completely booked. It was definitely worth the drive! The team was friendly and took the time to listen to my concerns about my cat (socially distanced, of course). Dr. Mayo saw my cat and came out to explain every bit of the exams & results to me. Even with COVID they did not hesitate to come out and meet with us in person while following protocols and keeping us safe. Took my cat in for a simple yearly exam, and it took over an hour and a half. First, this place does not respect their customers time. During the entire time I sat, they never communicated with me as what caused the delay. It was up to me to bug them for information. Secondly, the intake process is completely worthless since everything I said to the vet tech, and she wrote it down, I had to repeat to the doctor. What is the point of forcing the customer to repeat everything. Finally, the desk receptionist seemed patronizing and smug, as though I did not have a right to be angry over the amount of tome this took. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. Dr. Mayo is amazing! I took my dog, Apollo, in for an injury and it was very clear that she cared about him. She really took her time with him and took time to explain everything to me really well. Dr. Mayo has cared for my pets for over 16 years, She is caring and knowledgeable and available should I have any concerns. Her staff is always helpful. As important as her professional abilities is her compassion for animals that have been abandoned Both in her personal and professional life she has been devoted to the care for those animals that don't have an owner to assure their care. She also has given many hours to community youth programs expanding their understanding of the needs of their pets and the importance of proper interaction with animals. We have been clients of Pender Vet in Fairfax for over 18 years. We were so excited when Pender vet moved to Manassas. We had a terrible experience with the vet and the staff. We took our dog to the office to see if she needed pain meds. The doctor gave her pain meds, but little else. We were also overcharged and then sent another bill nearly 4 months after our visit. When I called about the bill there was no explanation for the charge. The staff is completely incompetent. This is not the Pender that I know and trust. This is a place where you send your animal to die because this office has absolutely no clue about how to take care of animals at all. Like I said. I have two small dogs that both needed updated shots. I was not able to get them while the pandemic was going on. I used Pender Veterinary in Manassass Park, and I have to say I was very impressed. The service is wonderful from the vet to the wonderful people checking you in and out. I was so impressed that I heard they also have a grooming service in the same building. I had one of my dogs groomed this past weekend and it is the best he has ever looked. If you are looking for a full service Veterinary you really need to try them. Love Love them!! read more
