In Nashville on Labor Day weekend. Our vehicle wouldn't start on Sunday morning. Read through dozens of reviews and settled on Carl Wood's Garage. Got a tow to Carl's. Spoke to Frank on Tuesday and he stated he would do his best to identify the problem and get back to me. Later that day he called and gave me a quote for a new starter and the labor required to do the job. A pretty intense job for our make and model. I gave the go ahead. Frank was able to work us in and he had the vehicle ready by Thursday. We settled up by phone. Total cost was cheaper than the quote. A relative picked up the vehicle the next day due to us being out of town. He stated thst the garage was the cleanest garage he had been it. Outstanding service! Owner (Frank) scammed me - avoid at all costs - I came in to get my front light fixed + get a full car ASE inspection so I could drive for Lyft - Frank claimed he could get me the needed inspection + fix my light - total came out to around $200 - front light was still broken after I got my car back - I don't think he did the full inspection at all if the front light detail was missed and I didn't receive proper paperwork for the needed ASE inspection (which means he just wanted to upcharge me on a full inspection) - I called later to dispute, but Frank claimed I never mentioned the needed ASE paperwork Never going here again. I'm assuming Frank is gonna respond to this to make his business look good read more

Absolutely do not trust this shop. My boyfriend was scammed out of $200 for work that was never done. We are struggling financially, and this was a huge blow for us. He went in for an inspection and to get a headlight replaced. Not only did they not change the light, they claimed to do the inspection, but the car still has the exact same issues. We tried to reach out and get answers, but were brushed off with excuses. This is beyond unprofessional, it's predatory. Taking money from people without doing the job is theft, plain and simple. I love this place. I was supposed to drive home for a funeral and the day before I did- my car started making really weird noises. They somehow got me in last minute and were incredible. First of all, the service. These people are fair and honest. They are kind and trustworthy. Everything was communicated and I wasn't surprised with random charges when I paid. It was very professional and honest. The work they did on my car was great. I haven't had any issues since. They were quick and informative. I was worried to drive 14 hours after my car being in the shop the day before- but I had no issues. They even texted me a few days later to make sure everything was working right! I've been looking for a great mechanic since I moved to nashville 4 years ago and have not been able to find one. I waited 3 weeks for an appointment (that was the first available). This place came highly recommended by a friend, so I waited. The staff were rude and condescending from the moment I dropped my car off for the appointment. Ultimately they weren't able to fix the issue with my car and told me to take it elsewhere. They still charged me a high price and were very rude and condescending. The owner is helpful and kind, but I will definitely not return. We paid $270 for a diagnostic check only to find out we needed to replace a battery. They said it took 90mins to make this determination. They are either grossly incompetent or this was price gouging. If you take your car here for a "diagnostic check" I would highly advise you to require they call you if the "check" is taking longer than 30-45mins. Otherwise, brace yourself for sticker shock. Not too long ago, the transmission on my car was shot and I had to take it in to a repair shop. I chose Carl Wood's Garage because it was a licensed AC Delco distributor and because of its close proximity to my house. If there is one thing that sucks big time, it is bringing a car into the mechanic, partly because you know it is going to cost you a lot of money and partly because you don't know if the guys are ripping you off! However, I had a very positive experience at Carl Wood's. The place is just an average car repair place, but with above average repairmen. As soon as I pulled my car in, they took a look at it and made a determination as to the cause of the problem. There was no hassle involved and they gave me an estimate right there. I am currently on hour 50 of being stranded in Cookville waiting on power steering parts for a car the this garage gave a clean bill of health not 2 weeks ago. I picked this garage based on the good reviews here on Yelp but I have been extremely disappointed. So far I have had to get the wheels aligned, a new battery and now this which will cost me $500 plus. I asked for a refund on the cost I paid for the inspection (more and $100) and was flat out told no. Extremely unprofessional considering everything they missed. I feel lucky to have found these guys. Needed new brakes for my '13 Tacoma truck, and the price was reasonable and service was fast. Also, the tech/mechanic, named Orrie, did a great job of looking everything over on the truck....belts, battery (which needed replaced), fluid levels, etc.....and he detailed EVERYTHING that was looked at on the final bill. I've never received a more detailed, helpful bill from a mechanic. Nice follow-up text message from Frank, too, who wanted to know if everything went well..... I liked this place because it was professional as all get-out but also felt friendly and small-towny. Also liked how honest they were. I'd taken the truck in for new brakes but I also left an open-ended request to look at anything that might be needed at the 75,000-mile mark, which I'd just passed. A lot of dealerships might have taken advantage of that open-ended request and charged $$$ for things that didn't need to be done. Not these guys; They topped out all the fluid levels but decided against changing the oil because they saw I'd had it done just a few months back. .... saving me some $$. read more

I've taken my car here 4 times in the last two years to have work done. Service: I always call ahead to make an appointment. They are very straight forward with me but not particularly polite. It has been my experience that they promise less and deliver more. Once, I told them one of my radiator hoses had a tear and steam was coming out of the hose. Their first available appointment was 2 days from when I called, but they said if they had time, someone would look at it and give me an estimate. They called a couple hours after I dropped my jeep off and told me it would be $X.00 amount to fix. They fixed it the same day and I was able to pick my jeep up at 2pm. The mechanic explained that it was an easy fix, so no need to wait until the appointment. On the other hand, when my radiator was broken, they waited to evaluate the vehicle until my appointment. They promptly called me with the estimate and I gave them the go-ahead. The place is efficient. They do not call me with updates usually, but when I call them, they are forthcoming with the progress of the repair. The will explain if they are waiting on parts or whatnot. Cost: Seems fair. They will give me a breakdown of the cost. Overall: I highly recommend Carl's. They are efficient, reasonably priced and honest. An unexpected hole in my gas tank two days prior to a road trip had the leaking SUV towed to Carl Woods. They were helpful, fast, and TRUTHFUL. I didn't get told my flux capacitor had gone bad as well and needed additional repairs. They offered me a new gas tank that would be there in 3 days or they had found a used tank that they could have on the next day. Reasonably priced (and even less than it would have been if they hadn't called around for a used tank). My dad had formerly worked on all my cars when they broke. However after having a lemon while living in Nashville 8 hours from dad I have visited many different car garages. Carl Woods is the best I've found. read more

Told me they worked on BMWs (they don't), charged for diagnosis, but misdiagnosed, put in after market parts that were not necessary and made the problem worse. $2500 later car was still not fixed. Stumped, their only suggestion was to take the car to someone who worked on BMWs. Ouch!!! Wish they had given honest advice before they took my hard earned money! I was driving through Nashville on the way from Texas to Pennsylvania and noticed my rear passenger tire was going flat. I called a few garages and everyone was booked solid for the rest of the day. When I called Carl Wood's they told me they were booked for the day but to come in anyway. They were able to take a look at my tire instantly and found a nail. YOU CAN'T GO WRONG HERE ! I have known about Carl Wood's Garage for well over 25 years or so . The people who first told me about it really know automobiles, as they were some of the most legendary drivers and mechanics at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway and throughout the south. (I raced stock cars in my youth and also went to automotive vocational school) I have sent friends there and even took one of their cars in for them all were very satisfied. Today I availed myself of their service for a routine 100K mile tuneup and one small electrical problem involving my door locks. Within an hour after we left the car, I received a call from them telling me that door lock problem is covered by GM as a recall and although they could fix it, they thought I could use the money and gave me the GM Recall # (They were right I could use the money and I never got a recall notice from GM BTW ) They did the rest of the service and I was able to pick up my car within 90 minutes. They mentioned if I maintain it the way I have, I should easily cruise along for another 100K. read more

Been taking my antediluvian VW Passat there for the past two years to a young lad named Phil. What a nice kid (40+) and boy does he know VWs. Two other garages had told me I needed to replace my front axles cuz they are all greasy. He just said, "Nah, they are fine. Never seen a VW without greasy CV boots." My car was leaking water under my feet. No one was quite sure why. He said immediately, "Doug, there are two drains from the engine compartment. The tend to get clogged after ten years on dirt/gravel roads." Fixed 'em in a jiffy for next to nothing. This is a good ol' fashioned garage. Very polite, modestly priced. If this Phil guy weren't already married, I would be flying my 28 year old daughter down from Vermont to fix them up. Oh well, can't have everything. After a dealership told me I needed a $2100 repair, I called Carl Wood's garage to get an estimate on the same repair. I had a taken another car there before and knew I'd get a fair price. The service I got went far beyond that. The owner told me that before replacing the part, he would suggest servicing the transmission which often improved the performance issue I was having. I agreed and took my car in. When I picked it up, he told me to drive it to see if I could tell a difference. I didn't have to leave the parking lot to know that he had been spot on. Over the last 3 years, I've taken my 2 different cars to Wood's Garage -- initially, a 1983 Camry and more recently a 2001 Audi. I am always happy with my experience at Wood's: when the Camry broke down, they were quick (a few hours) to figure out what was wrong and gave me an estimate (which they met when it came time to pay the bill) right then. And with the Audi -- although I don't think they do too much work on non-domestic cars -- their prices always amaze my dad, who has the same car in Nevada, and always seems to pay approximately 50% more for the same sort of service or repairs (everything from an oil change to changing the drive belt). So my experience with them has been marked by the uncommon trifecta of competency, speed, and low-priced. read more

I will NEVER go back! DISHONEST, OVERCHARGED I was charged $90 for my car to be looked at (not worked on) at the rate of $80 an hour plus taxes. This was understood from the beginning that there were no free estimates. They drove my car to hear the sound, took the front two tires off and found that the rotors and break pads needed replaced and said this took 1 HOUR to figure that out. When I called to check on my car I was given quite the guilt trip to have my car picked up and not worked on even though they had no kind of estimate put together. Why would I have you work on my car without having any idea of how much it will cost?????? I picked up my car, paid the $90 and my guy friend REPLACED the rotors and brake pads in an hour's time with just a jack and stands. It takes two seconds to take a tire off, not an hour. Silver lining - I learned so much about how much time a job like that would take and what to look for. There is no way it would take an hour to check brake pads and rotors. read more
