Not great. I paid them a signficant amount of money to replace a lock, only for it not to work and their install caused damage to the door. When I called them for help, they offered to not charge for the labor but to still charge for a replacement lock that I'd already paid for. Not worth it. read more

These guys are wonderful. We were having trouble with our 99 year old front door lock set. The Zipf guy came out, completely removed the entire mechanism (which was far larger than we had imagined), replaced some broken parts, cleaned and oiled it, and got everything working like it worked in 1924. Whatever key you need, this is the place to go. Lowes and Home Depot can apparently only do certain types of keys that they have a template for. But this place can do it all, and fast and cheap. So special keys will be anything that have a deep slit in it, like care keys and the like and really old buildings. Plus they have a lot of other things for locks and keys as well. I called them about a Schlage strike plate. They said they have them. I asked if they would check to make sure they had this particular one, if I gave them the part number. The person gruffly replied "We're a Schlage dealer. I guarantee we have it.". So I drove there, and they didn't have it. They said they could order it, but I would have to pay freight. I try not to run to Home Depot every time I need something, preferring to give business to locals when possible, but not when they are jackasses. read more

Hired them to come out and replace a front door lock in a 4 unit condo. They sent someone out who gave us a recommendation and we went with that at a cost of $900. The interior handle came off one week later. They came out and fixed it, and it fell off again the next day. They refused to fix it again as they said it was a defect in the product and we needed to contact the manufacturer. They were the ones who chose the product, why recommend a crummy lock and charge us $900. The previous lock had been there for 15 years without a problem. This company sucks and I would never use them again. We are going to take legal action against them. read more

So much of life depends on the right key. Carl Zipf's is one place you can go where the key will always fit. I like this lock shop because it is easy to get to. Ample parking, central location and the shop only does locks and keys. So much easier and reliable than trucking it to Meijer's or a Home Depot. Plus, as earlier mentioned locks and keys is all they do so they always get it right. When house-sitting I accidentally lost the key. After breaking in to the house I unscrewed the deadbolt and brought it to Zipf's. Not only did they make me another key, they made it the same color and scuffed it up for me. I returned the key to my friend and she never knew how truly irresponsible I was. Zipf's also sells cool little safes and lock boxes. I bought one that looks like a book to hold my important documents. The service there is always fast and no key is too challenging. I have never had to go back because a key never fits. I called this company because they were the original company that changed our locks when we bought our house. After a attempted break in (which was unsuccessful,) I contacted them again to add additional features (brass plates) to our door fames. Not only did I schedule with them, but sent them pictures of the frames to make sure they could do the work. However, when I called them on the said scheduled day, the locksmith was sick! He didn't call me, didn't tell me not to take the day off, NOTHING. I'm an attorney and can't just take off when I please. When I called them to find out what was going on, after Mark the locksmith responded to me stating he was sick, Buddy, presumptively the office manager, let me know that they may be able to get someone out here today, but they would not be sure they could do the work. Wow! I don't know what world they live in, but I live in a world of responsibility, tight schedules, reliability and professionalism. Do not use this company. I have used this company as my go to for many years - recently had keys made here. Have never had a "bad cut" resulting in a key not functioning. However when I needed to discuss a lock set for a new and to be installed garage entry door - bad service. The employee I spoke with just wasn't good on the phone. Didn't have any technical knowledge of locks and deadbolts "Grade." At the end of day - we were unable to even get together a price for a single product. If you need anything key related. This is the place to go. I needed two ignition keys for me and my wife's vehicles. At the dealer it would have cost us almost 600 dollars. It's damn hard to find a place that will cut and program the keys. I got them here for under two hundred total. I know it sounds like a lot but these are ignition keys. One for a Mazda and one for a Malibu with the chips embedded and programmed into them. I had both done in about 30 minutes, programmed tested and working.
