Not only is Carl a gifted mechanic, he can also be tenacious in tracking down issues that to other mechanics would seem impossible. He's helped me immensely with my 2010 Toyota Prius and his shop's hourly rate is astonishingly low, at least in my experience. You get what you pay for and sometimes more. But that's not why I'm writing this. Ya see, Carl is that proverbial Unicorn of an honest mechanic and I just think he's a man of great character, overall. Let me tell you why... Last month my car developed a loud rattling under the hood. Like, pretty scary. It made my pocketbook pucker up, if ya know what I mean. By the next day my car was in his shop for diagnostics. First he suspected it was just misfiring, and thought changing the spark plugs could solve the problem , but we wanted to get to the root of the problem to make sure I was well-taken care of. Then he discovered signs that it had a blown head gasket. Oof. $4000 I didn't have. Yeah, things escalated quickly after that, but that was my fault for not setting money aside for routine maintenance. I put that car through *a lot* of abuse, and gave it very little love, so I just figured it was time to sell it to the junkyard. "I'll let you think about it as long as you need to decide." I thanked him and drove my poor beater home. Within a day it had worsened to the point where the car "computer" disabled the drive train. The car would not shift into gear, and the engine wouldn't rev at all when I "put the pedal to the metal" while it was idling. Okay, I guess there's still something fishy about my old beater/workhorse. "So... if you'd like, I could change your head gasket, but I'm worried there might be even bigger problems behind this. I don't want you to spend all that money on this repair if there's a bigger root problem behind all this that could ruin your engine at any time...maybe even after a month. For around the same cost we could put a used low-mileage engine with a warranty in this car." That's a lot to think about. I thought for sure this thing was destined for the junkyard after that, but in the end my mother convinced me to have a new engine put in, and even funded the project. Around a week later I had a quote for the repair, but he said he could only warranty the labor for a month and that I should have the local shop that he would have bought the engine from do the labor, because they offered a 1 year warranty on parts and labor. So, rather than earn a considererable amount money on the labor and markup on the used engine, he chose to give me the option that would give my mother and I the best possible outcome. And *that right there*, Ladies and Gentlemen is why Carl is my mechanic for the life of the car the saved from the junkyard twice. I think I might owe Carl a foot massage for that one... read more

Carl called me back right away but only to say he's not taking any new customers because of the heat. Good thing he doesn't live in Phoenix, he'd never work. Anyway, I have heard good things about him, but it does not good if you can't get an appointment because you're a new customer and if you're a regular, the wait time is over a month long. People need jobs so, hire more people. read more

He also provides invaluable operating tips for our 2024 ES300 and RX400. Great info! The following narrative is an example of how honest and fair Carl is. We were looking for a repair shop for our Lexus SC300 because we were having problems with the transmission not shifting properly. Our previous shop near the Boise Airport worked on it for an hour and a half or so, couldn't find the problem but still charged us 150.00 for their time. Then we found Carl's, called him up, liked what he had to say and decided to give him a try. We are so glad we did. Carl found the problem, a faulty ECM (Engine Control Module) but doesn't fix electronic "black boxes" but at least he found the problem. Better yet he didn't charge us for "something he couldn't fix". AMAZING!!!! We've been customers of his ever since. No "up sales" or charges. Didn't have any work done by Carl, but I called hoping to get my 2004 f150 with the 5.4 triton in for a diagnosis on a no start after I changed the plugs. He called back shortly and said he was backed up through April, but spent about 5 minutes on the phone with me asking me about the problem and telling me where he would start looking. Never had a mechanic do this before and will definitely be going to Carl in the future for anything I can't fix myself! read more

Carl specializes in repairing hybrid & electric/EV cars like the Toyota Prius, RAV-4 and other electric/hybrid SUVs, trucks, etc. He is a super-recycler and even has solar panels on his shop that help charge his own Chevy hybrid sedan. my AC was broken for several months and i wanted it to help defog my windows in the cold. Carl tested my Subarus AC system and found the problem in the dash in the heat exchanger (not a part that typically fails) this 2014 Forester has had so many failures including the transmission. My 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, close to 200k miles, was making some awful sounds. I was a little (a lot) worried that it was a timing belt, that it would break at any minute, and that it would cost thousands of dollars. Being new in town, I chose Carl's based on reviews on Yelp, and I was not disappointed. They fit me in within 24 hours, called to say, "Your belt's fine; we did fill up your power steering fluid. I would not take my car anywhere else unless Carl told me to (there are a few things he would recommend that we go elsewhere for, like transmission work). Carl is honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and takes care of my car like a friend, letting me know what repairs are coming up and what I can get away with waiting on. He's also just an all around likable guy, someone you'd want to sit and talk to for awhile (I'm always having to say "I should let you get to work now.") My last Subaru, a very beat up 1995 Legacy, broke on the way home from getting the brakes worked on, and Carl felt terrible even though it was totally unrelated (we should have sold that car about a year before we did, seriously - he kept telling us we might want to consider selling it). I was getting some front end grinding noise after a long trip on my 2011 Tahoe. Pulled up reviews of local mechanics in the area and chose to talk with Carl about issue. Dropped it off the next day. Carl drove it, put it up on the rack and promptly called me with the diagnosis which he had already guessed with my initial call. Gave me a very reasonable quote with no attempt to "up-sale" additional work. He even told me what didn't need to be done which could have easily been added to the job. Off the bat, I should say that I just had a car looked at (no actual repair done) in the space of about 20 minutes one afternoon. Carl and his other employee were so honest, friendly and frank with me. We didn't make repairs that day because they simply weren't needed right now (while our other car is in the shop). Very easy to talk to and honest. I sent them the quote from another repair shop (Honda dealer) and was given an honest opinion. Most of what was quoted from the other shop was high and unnecessary. Carl's is honest and easy to schedule with. They recommended I check with the original Honda dealer we purchased the Odyssey through to see if we had an extended warranty, turns out we did even though the local dealer said they couldn't find one. The original 3 year 36,000 mile warranty wouldn't cover the $6,000 in repairs on our 2016 Honda Odyssey (43k miles) for engine issues. The extended warranty covered the repairs, thanks to advice from Carl's, we saved $6,000 on repairs. read more

After astronomical amounts of money spent at dealerships and other sleazy shops around town, my family started taking their cars to Carl's and have had nothing but success. So I followed suit by taking my Toyota Camry here, first for minor work and later for major belt replacements that had been put off for some time. What I enjoyed the most was when Carl informed me about how I could delay on some other problems uncovered. He said, "of course I would love to take your money now, but I think you can wait on this for some time." On that same visit, his crew also determined that a major part that would have cost hundreds of dollars to replace did not need to be replaced after all, despite the original recommendation. I've been taking my Ford F-150 to Carl for several years. He always does great work and I never feel like I'm getting gouged. I recently took my truck to a tire center to have the snow tires removed and they gave me a laundry list of things that they thought needed to be done to my truck. The tire center would gladly make all the recommended repairs for about $1600! I took the list and my truck to Carl's and he said only a few of the recommendations were needed and he did them for about $400.
