Today, Carl's was to the rescue. We had a nightmare "who knows when" closing which put us in a crazy limbo with not knowing when we could move our smaller stuff. This one guy Thomas was so patient and made sure we had a van at a moment's notice when closing went awry, and was able to let us extend when we had to move more random stuff than we originally anticipated. The rental of a van without seats was about $50 per day with all the fees,. Thank guys at Carl's! Moving stinks. read more

Worst company I have ever seen operating in the United state ! I made a reservation , then found out in the fine print that they charge additional fees for miles , I canceled on line and called to confirm cancelation within an hour of the initial reservation . Few days later I see full charge on my credit card , I had to go through the hassle of finding there phone number call and after lengthy call , they agree to refund . When I inquired why that happen , the manager Thomas explain that this is company policy ! Really a scam . Never again . read more

Rented a cargo van for a move from Broward to Alachua County. Picked up the van on Friday, dropped it off on Sunday afternoon. The Fort Lauderdale office is closed on Sunday, but they provide a key dropoff. Just now got the final invoice -- no surprises. Prices lower than U-Haul, and 200 free miles. Hard to beat. read more

Please be aware of there cancellations policy since they are not upfront with you to explain. Once your reservation is booked they will keep the deposit if you cancel. They do not tell you this on the phone and when I called to cancel I was told the information is on their web site. My bad for not looking but I feel they should be honest and upfront when booking. If I could give zero stars, I definitely would!!! I started planning a family trip in May of 2018 for May of 2019. I called and reserved a 15 passenger van approximately 6 months (or more) before I needed it. When my husband and I arrived to pick it up, the employee took us to the oldest looking van on the lot. I really was not too concerned about that until we opened the doors and it had a musty smell in it and the seats and carpet looked stained and dirty. My husband asked the employee at that time if we could get a different van and he said the others were already reserved. My husband then asked if they are all 15 passenger vans, why couldn't he change out our van since we were already there and assign our van to someone else? The employee said the other 15 passengers cost more, that did not make sense to me and we found out later that was actually not true. We ended up taking the van they had assigned us because we had less than an hour before we had to pick up or children and grandchildren at the airport. Within 30 minutes after picking up the van and riding in it, I was more concerned about the musty smell. We were about to put or 5 grandchildren in this van, 2 of which are infants (all under age 5). The smell actually seemed to be getting worse, possibly due to the vents circulating the odor. About 30 minutes after picking up the van, I called back and asked for a manager. I spoke to Thomas and explained to him about the bad odor in the van and expressed my concerns about driving my grandbabies around in the van for 5 days and asked if I could exchange the van the next day. He was extremely rude from the very beginning of the conversation. He proceeded to raise his voice at me and said, "No ma'am, our vans absolutely do not have a bad smell!!" When I told him again that it did and that my husband smelled it also, he actually told me his nose was "trained" and he would know if it did. He also said he knew the exact van we had and that he had just sprayed it before we got it. I commented that it must have had a bad odor or he would not have sprayed it and he said they spray all the vans. He then said ALL vehicles have a slight odor due to the doors being closed all the time( again, the made no sense at all). The conversation lasted several minutes. He was rude and disrespectful the entire time and refused to exchange the van. We had no choice but to just keep it. Later that day, we realized there was something wrong with the air conditioning in the van. It would blow cool for about 2-3 minutes, then blow warm for about 5 minutes, then back cool. It did that the entire time we had the van. Needless to say, that made our 5 days pretty miserable, as the temperatures reached the 90's each day. When we returned the van, I explained to the young man everything that had transpired. He was very apologetic about the odor and the air issues. He also told us that all the 15 passenger vans are the same price. I wish I had that young man's name. Thomas should demote himself and make that young man the manager. Lastly, we were charged airport taxes even though we did not fly in. That is definitely not fair! I WILL NEVER RENT FROM CARL'S VAN RENTAL AGAIN AND I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE!!! The price was slightly cheaper but the service was questionable. The guys "try" to be nice but they are abrasive without realizing it. We ordered a minivan for the six of us with a lot of luggage. We were picked up in the same vehicle that we were supposed to rent, which makes for 7 people, since we had to drive the employee back to the office. We barely fit the luggage in, with some of it on my kids lap. The driver said, well, you asked for a minivan and there is room for 7. "yes - but i didn't account for 7, I accounted for 6" - well you still got a minivan was his reply. Then I had to call my insurance broker for a copy of my insurance card. He simply said, from his office "if you don't present it, you can't rent the car". He also said "you should have read the contract carefully". While there, there was another person on the phone with insurance conflict, and he had the same comment. "well, you should read the contract carefully". The good - my credit card was cancelled due to a "fraud alert" but they still held on to the car and called me upon arrival to notify me of the credit card not processing (but that was 3 days after i made the reservation - you would think they would have known about it 2 days earlier). Lastly, depsite my declining collision coverage, they tried to sneak in some other insurance saying "it's only $1.99 / day. He had to redo the entire contract to get the right price. Wasted another 5 minutes). Overall, car was a bit dated (2010 model) and some interior items, like AC cover, handles, etc, were broken off completely. In short, I"ll stick with Enterprise, regardless of the money. Nicer staff, easier transactions (much much quicker, more car options) and not much more expensive. We svaed perhaps $50 on a 1 week rental, but won't bother with them again. read more

Rented a cargo van last week, reserved the van on Tuesday. Van was ready as promised at the pick up time paperwork was in order and fully explained. Van ran fine with no problems, returned after closing. There was drop off they charged me nothing for returning a little late and the extra mileage charge was exact. Would recommend them since the cargo van was way less expensive than a passenger van and held a lot more stuff. Things must have changed from 2012, I have nothing but nice things to say about them. read more

I thought it was a scam because the rate was so low (off season - Sat-Tues, $97!). They were going to be closed when I arrived, so they left the minivan at the airport with a lockbox for the key. It was a Kia Sedona and it was perfectly fine. There was a hint of brusque-ness, but they weren't rude. I doubt I will ever get that kind of a rate again, but I would use Carl's again if I did! read more

We recently rented a minivan through Carl's. It wasn't a horrible experience, but it wasn't great either. The price was better than all others, which is why we decided to take a chance on this small business. The whole process of renting the van, however, was very odd and a little shady. We had to pick the car up at the airport as it was after hours for Carl's (which is the biggest hassle of renting from a business that is not open 24/7). Because of this, we had to fill out the contract ahead of time through e-mail. We were literally hounded by the guys at Carl's to fill it out. I understand that they just want to ensure that the paperwork gets done, but they called me 5 times in a week reminding me to send the paperwork in. I was waiting for my husband to get back in town with his driver's license, which is why I couldn't send it "immediately" as they requested. There was still plenty of time, so I'm not sure why they were getting so fussy. I also sent them an e-mail asking for clarification on the contract. Instead of reading the e-mail, they called me at 8am the next day to ask why I hadn't filled out the contract yet. I informed the guy that I was waiting for a response to my e-mail and he just said, "Oh." He was rather abrasive in answering the questions. The contract was littered with typos, which upped the shadiness factor. On one line it said that the vehicle MUST be returned to the airport, but on the next line it said they would charge $200 if it was returned to the airport during business hours. Our reservation was for a drop-off time of 6pm, but I knew we would be there around 4pm. They close at 5pm, so I wasn't sure where we should bring it. The guy got all flustered and eventually shouted, "just bring it back to the airport." The payment for the vehicle was the shadiest part. They asked for a copy of the front and back of my credit card. I ended up giving them one that I don't use anymore because I want to keep a close eye on the charges; they have all of my numbers and the CIN on the back of the card! The contract also stated that we would have to pay for the parking at the airport. It indicated that it would be at the Daily Parking lot, which costs $7.50 per day. When we got there they had parked it in the ramp and we had to pay $15 to get it out. The van itself was fine. It was a Kia Sedona. The rotors were terrible and definitely need some attention. We ended up dropping the vehicle off at the rental office as it was 4pm and I didn't trust that they wouldn't charge us the $200. The guy took us back to the airport in the same vehicle. He put two magnets on the side of the van with the Carl's logo on it. He then said he couldn't take us to the terminal because he wasn't allowed to go there. He had to take us to the rental counters at the airport and we'd have to walk to the terminal from there. Had he just left the magnets off of the car it seems like he could have taken us to the terminal (we had just dropped my parents at the terminal in the same van 20 minutes prior). BOTTOM LINE: If you want a cheap van rental from a business that acts like they are renting out their mom's minivan from her basement, rent from Carl's. read more

We rented a van to drive from Ft. Lauderdale to Savannah, Georgia for a family trip. The van had a severe roach and ant infestation which we were not informed about. About an hour into the ride we noticed roaches crawling on passenger seats and floor of the van and the family was terrified. I called Carl's Van Rental from the car and informed Michael that I was travelling with young children, teens, and seniors in less than sanitary and deplorable conditions. Also, the van was rented to me without any windshield wiper water and with 1/2 tank of gas and nobody went over with me on how to operate this car. Michael told me that a manager would call me and instructed me to purchase roach bait and ant bait, which I did. We had to take a detour and look for Home Depot in the middle of nowhere to buy the roach and ant baits. Even though we placed the baits all around the car, the misery with roaches and ants did not go away. I wanted to leave the car on the road but we were stuck with the van as Carl's Van Rentals do not have other locations except for Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando. We had no choice but to continue driving with screaming, terrified children and roaches running around us. Our trip was totally ruined and we are totally disgusted. Our children were screaming as roaches were running around the car while we had to concentrate on the directions and the road. After 8 hours of misery with the ants, roaches, stopping for roach sprays, being exposed to roach spray smell for most of the ride, we finally got to the hotel. After a few hours we realized that the roaches came with our luggage to our hotel room. The nightmare continued as we had to fumigate our room and eventually move to another room because the roach situation was unbearable. To add insult to injury, we realized that we brought roaches to our house when as well. read more
