The bells and whistles are there, but management is horrible. The CNAs are for the most part hardworking

We went on a tour there on Friday, June 27, 2025. We are looking for somewhere for a family member. The facility is very nice. It's clean and smells pleasant. There were a lot of people milling around in the TV lounge area when we were there. It was around 1:30 p.m. The rooms for the independent and assistant living are not shared. They are spacious and come with a bar area, meaning there is a sink in most of them and a mini fridge. One of them didn't have a sink, but had a mini fridge and freezer. It was pretty tall. All have step up showers meaning there is a lip you have to step into. I was surprised they didn't have roll in showers. The bathrooms are spacious. It looked like there was enough room to wheel in with a wheelchair or walker. The rooms have large closets with built in shelves. The rooms we looked at were not on the first floor and we took an elevator to them. I was told there is a lounge on every floor, at least that's what I think I was told, we did not tour the lounge. The independent and assisted living share a outdoor space. It was nice. It had a community garden, lots of sitting areas, a place to golf and a dog waste disposal system. The outdoors was verynice. The memory care unit also has an outdoor space. It's less then half the size of the other outdoor space, but it's still nice and spacious. It also has a garden in it and they had a bunch of green tomatoes growing that I could see. There was a sign on the door warning of the excess heat outside. It also had plenty of seating areas. The independent and assisted living share a dining area. It looks like a restaurant and they have a menu of what is being served. The same food is served to the Memory Care Unit. All units have activities directors and a whole calendar of activities. The Memory Care Unit has Zumba in the mornings. I think that is nice. It will get them moving. The independent and assisted living have 3 exits to the building and they are free to come and go at any time. They also have an acute care area for those that need additional care, but don't need to be in the memory care unit. We visited the locked down memory care unit. It was very pleasant. It was right after lunch when we arrived and everyone was waiting for ice cream to be served out. They looked like a lively group. One of the women even said hi to us and talked to us. It's the best Memory Care Center that we've visited. read more

This review is for Miss Sheila. Looking for facilities for a loved one is never easy and can be overwhelming. However, the moment I walked into The Carlton and saw how happy the residents and staff were, I knew this was the place where my mom would both be happy and safe. The other facilities I spoke to all treated me like they were trying to sell me something. It was all about the money and pushing me to make a decision, and it wasn't truly about my mom. Miss Sheila never made me feel like that. She was the only person who genuinely seemed to care and empathized with what I was going through. She saw me as a person, not just another potential customer. When I learned the actual costs, I informed Miss Sheila that I didn't think I could manage it but appreciated her time. The next day, she messaged me saying she wanted to help me out and was able to find a way to decrease some of the costs without having to sacrifice or struggle too much, as she knew I was doing this all alone. Throughout the weeks, she even continued to check in on me to see how I'm doing, reminding me to take care of myself. Miss Sheila goes above and beyond, not just because it's her job, but because she genuinely cares for people. Miss Sheila, I am incredibly grateful for everything you have done for me. In a world that is all about business and making money, you are a true reminder that there are good people out there. read more

After my mom died in 2022, my dad's mental and physical health deteriorated rapidly. He wanted to continue to live independently, but after several rounds in the hospital and skill nursing facilities, it seemed clear he would be unable to. He was resigned to moving to Assisted Living, but was not happy about it. I visited several Senior Living places around the Hayward/Castro Valley/San Leandro area. All were really nice, and I would have felt comfortable with him in any of the ones I checked out. All of them had good dining options, loads of activities, and the nursing care he needs. But Carlton had something special about it, from the moment I walked in. There was a warmth and vibrancy that I felt from both the staff and the residents. Much of the staff has been there a long time, and I feel that they care very much about the residents. Fast forward a few short months, and Dad is really getting his mojo back. He's making friends, getting more active, and has stories to tell me when we get together. I can't thank the folks at Carlton enough for their kindness and professionalism. I'd call folks out by name (Sheila, Debbie, Jocelyn...), but it's really everyone! You've made a real difference in our lives. read more

The Carlton is a premier Independent Living Community. My family member lived here for about a year, following her husband's accident. They were both eventually able to move to LA to be closer to us. If we lived in the Bay Area, they would have never left the Carlton because it's a wonderful community. If you'll take a tour, you'll note the place is clean. That is true for every inch of the building. You'll also notice there are people hanging out in the lobby, that is because this place specializes in community. All communities like this one have a social calendar to show off during tours. And all the community's staff will say things like "we love our residents," but for many of them those calendars are just pieces of paper created to satisfy their corporate headquarters. At the Carlton, their is a living, breathing, active community. If you need proof, stay for Bingo sometime and you'll see just how rich this community is! I do wonder if the Carlton would be open to unassigned seating during meal times as an open restaurant creates better community opportunities. Otherwise, if you or your family member is considering moving into the Carlton, you can move in knowing you're getting the best thing the city has to offer! read more

I searched long and hard before settling on a place to be my moms home. The Carlton is lovely, if you dont believe me just go check it out. It's clean, bright, airy, the food is delicious, and they have events and activities for all. The staff seems to really love their job. My mother was in memory care, and the workers there treated her like she was their mom. They dressed her nicely, kept her hygiene up, danced with her, did her nails, gave her all her favorite treats, and overall made her feels as comfortable as possible. Having to put your loved one in a care facility is hard, but I never questioned my decision to select Carlton. read more

As new grandparents , the real celebration is not for us as much it is for the GREAT grandparents to experience in thier late 90's which we were able to do when we selected the Carlton in San Leandro 2.9 miles from our home . We are in awe of the care, professionalism and the organzation and guidelines during this "Covid" time. We have been greeted with smiles , hello's by name which we are impressed with . We were able to share a meal and walk around the courtyard. When we got them settled we were able to make appointments for hair cuts there at the Carlton for them, they were so happy. lWe were impressed that they sang Happy birthday to both our parents at breakfast which they enjoyed. We are blessed that we made the right decisions and they are happy and well taken care of. We are also comforted knowing they are taking their medications. Thank you very much Carlton . read more

Senior living at Carlton is fine. Food not so well. If you like well done meat , it's okay, it's dry. Fish if fried quickly would stay juicy, so it's a hit or miss. Not too many diabetic choices, only diet cola, H2O, Tea. Personal is nice. They Treat you nice but if you need assistance, it may take time to wait 15 or 20 minutes for help. The office staff are very helpful to the needs of the individual, like running errands for the residents. That's all I have to say. read more

I have such gratitude for the exemplary service the Carlton staff has provided to my father, and to my entire family. Because of the Covid 19 Pandemic, the Carlton staff has had to do so much to assist us during the move-in process and I would like to recognize some staff members that really stand out. Sheila Rodriguez has been our main point of contact and has always been communicative, patient and helpful in so many ways. She does whatever needs to be done and has impeccable follow through. I felt I could always call and Sheila was ready to help no matter the issue ranging from paper work to getting just the right furniture out of the store room. Sheila wants to make it right! Yesenia Rubio also really came through and provided on-the-spot assistance the day my father moved in. We texted and called each other making sure everything was in order prior to my father arriving including helping me trouble shoot repairing his bed. We worked as a team and got it done. Jocelyn Ahnstrom has been so easy to communicate with and shows so much care for my father. She has such a big heart and I know is working diligently to make sure my father's needs are met. It is very comforting knowing he is in such good hands with her at the helm. Donna Wooldridge gracefully makes both my father and our family feel that she is there to tend to my father's needs. She is empathetic to the fact that he is shut in right now and her presence provides a much needed human connection. I also appreciated her guiding us to get the right kind of phone and then coordinating the installation. So my mother use to live in memory care we took her out to another community but I want to say I ONLY gave stars due to the care partners they took great care of my mother love them and I know we gave them a hard time lol but Glenis and Miss Carmela where heaven sent if they still work there I promise your loved ones are in great hands NOW management treated those lady's like crap my neighbors mom is there and has been for a while she was telling me a story when management was yelling at a few of the care partners saying "do you have a brain use it" in front of families he said it's not the first time she talked to them like that he checked on the young lady and she didn't want to make a big deal, he's cool with the other families and everyone has experienced some verbal abuse I asked what's the manager name to see if we we're talking about the same person, he said "Kushir" I was surprised she was still there I've witnessed so much there it's insane the ladies were so nice. There worked very hard and you seen it on their faces, but you can also tell that the smiles are being forced someone from corporate needs to come and talk to those ladies individually because it's no way that they are mentally OK being verbally abused i'll hear her talk to other staff about her care partners but not in a good way she's like a wolf and sheep clothing. I pray those ladies find security and comfort. I heard there is a new Director. I hear she's really nice but she should find time to talk to those ladies, we love the bands that used to come in the dining area so much fun and lively Miss Sheila was amazing and mom loved the food we had to even put her on double portions lol read more

My mother lived at Carlton Plaza for four years until her life savings were depleted. Medications are dispensed by untrained staff She was charged for almost two years of continence care Moving her out two years ago she has not needed continence care at all!!!!! They are crooks and California does not monitor these places Disgusting!!!!!! Considerable attempts to meet with senior administration fall on deaf ears And when we needed to move my mother because her funds were depleted we were shamed and made to feel guilty. "Most people who move at her age die shortly thereafter" She died recently following a fall after going to the restroom. She was NEVER incontinent! Every bell and whistle and incompetent staff!!!! Our Mom has been here for about a year. Things were good until Covid, but now we cant hardly see her and the staff will not return our calls, even though multiple messages have been left. Mom has fallen and fractured her back and due to the isolation of Covid protocols, is starting to show signs of dementia from lack of societal communication. After considering other assisted living facilities, we moved our 93 year old parent to Carlton. Most places have a high staff turnover, at Carlton there are many staff members that have worked there a long time. The staff is well-trained and friendly particularly the front desk which keeps track of residents and visitors. Having the large living room on the first floor near the dining room and cafe is ideal because it feels like people are busy living. The beautiful backyard is welcoming. They really encourage families to visit by planning family friendly events. Carlton is not inexpensive but it is in line with similar facilities. It is always a difficult decision to place a relative in assisted living. No one place can meet everyone's needs. Luckily for our family Carlton has been a good fit. read more

Three months have passed, since my last review. And, despite lengthy, impassioned conversations with Carlton management things have NOT improved. My mother is STILL unhappy living at Carlton and still wants to move away. CASE IN POINT I was recently LIED to by Carlton's Director of Resident Services, Jocelyn Ahnstrom. Last week, Carlton took possession of my mothers pill cards. When I learned of that, I explained to Jocelyn all we need to do is count the remaining pills. The remaining pills will tell us whether or not my mother is properly taking her medication. Jocelyn told me the pill count did NOT match up. Then, a day later, Jocelyn phones to say my mother's pill cards are EMPTY. Well, how could Jocelyn claim in one conversation the remaining pill count did not match up when the pill cards were, in fact, empty? JOCELYN, a representative of Carlton, had obviously LIED to me. CASE IN POINT Last week, my mother visited her doctor of 10+ years. She asked her doctor for another letter to allow her to continue to self-medicate. To which her doctor said she had ALREADY written a similar letter months ago. My mother told her that Carlton was, AGAIN, trying to take away her ability to self-medicate, which will allow Carlton to give my mother her medication and charge hundreds of $$$ a month more for that extra service. While my mother was seated in the dining hall, she noticed Geraldine, the "Carlton Head Nurse". When she tried to show her the doctor's letter, Geraldine curtly (as described by mother) said, "I saw that already." THAT was a LIE, because the doctor's letter was issued just a few days previously. Do you want to place your loved one in an living environment where management LIES so they may financially benefit? Do you want to place your loved one in a living environment where the Head Nurse JUMPS TO CONCLUSIONS when a little old lady simply wants to show them her doctor's letter? read more

My Mom lived at the Carlton Plaza for 10 months. She loved it there.She was so happy and she wasn't easy to please. The staff were so friendly and so loving to her. They always greeted my brother and I by our first names. They had great activities for the residents and lots of entertainment. They always celebrated holidays in a very festive way. They had a private dining room where we would cook and have dinner with my Mom. The facilities were very clean and kept up very well. It had an upbeat energy to it. Not depressing like other places we had visited My Mom passed away last week and they loved her and took care of her till she took her last breath. I can't recommend the Carlton Plaza more highly! read more

First of all, I'd to specify that I am giving a completely open & honest review here. My mother has been at Carlton since last August so it is just over a year. When we were looking for a senior home, we had seen fancier & newer facilities in both Emeryville and Alameda. They were nice but they didn't have what Carlton has which is a strong sense of community. This I would say is the best & strongest feature at Carlton Plaza - a feeling of being at home, a sense of community. You can't buy that. Carlton Plaza is not fancy but it is warm, clean and pleasant. It feel like someone's home not a hotel. All the residents know each other and get along. It really is nice to see. The people who work here know my mom by first name & have always been friendly & helpful. My mother tires out easily but if she wants to be around people there is a large community room with big comfy chairs. There are activities every week and shuttle services to doctor appointments, movie or restaurant outings, CVS etc... Earlier this year my mother suffered a minor stroke. She was downstairs having breakfast and it was one of the staff that noticed my mom's slurred speech and called an ambulance. The Carlton staff knew the signs and symptoms of a stroke and pretty much saved my mom's life. Carlton will charge for any added individual needs such as medication monitoring or help with showering etc.. but all the senior facilities do and their pricing is in line with other senior facilities. Both Jocelyn & Sheila are wonderful and have always returned my calls and answered my questions. read more

I moved my father to the community for a year and a half. Great facility with a great staff. They took great care of him. He met some amazing people. The food was good. As my fathers condition deteriorated. He needed more services. That's when things got very expensive. Make sure you understand the costs of services and consider your loved ones health. We moved dad to a facility with a capped fee for considerably less for more services. It's smaller and has many of the same benefits. We will miss this place though. read more

We toured Carlton Plaza for our 89 year old dad. He had suffered "low sodium" and suffered from depression. He was ultimately placed in a senior physch nursing home. Depression is common in elders. Carlton Plaza wanted nothing to do with anyone with "mental problems". We hoped they would take him as respite resident so they could establish him as "safe to himself and others". Not a chance. As it turns out we found a wonderful place for dad that is not afraid of the realities of aging. read more

Had a tour there last week and was not impressed with what i saw. Most people would love to see a nice new fancy building for their mom and dad but that's all it is. Carlton Rates are out of this world, now i see where all the family money goes every month, to upgrade their mansion and not to the care of the residents. Its located on a very busy street with no view. Staff is ok, nothing special. My placement agency representative explain to me that their memory care is a joke. They charge a flat rate(usually the highest it can be) for EVERYONE who is in the memory care unit even if all they need is medication management. You will need to have a HUGE savings or just maybe win the lotto to place your family member here. While there is Marymount Villa and Pacifica right down there street where i have also visit is much more reasonable and from my experience, more understanding of each family's needs. In conclusion, you do not get what you pay for here, If you dont take my word for it, wait and watch your money vanish. read more

Visiting with family who isn't able to live in a normal setting is always important. The staff aren't always as friendly as they should be, seems like they need further training. I will say not all the staff are rude just a few, if I have had an issue I normally go to higher management. I have them a three based on staff and the atmosphere. I cannot say enough about the fabulous staff and amenities at Carlton Plaza. They have many activities to keep seniors busy and connected if they so desire. My parents moved into assisted living there in 2004. As my mother's dementia worsened, she was moved into their dementia unit which they call "Our House." The staff and caretakers there are exceptional in every way. My mother lived there for almost 7 years, until her recent death. I will miss the staff at Carlton as they became extended family members. They treated my parents and us like family. read more

I play music full time all over the Bay Area and it is definitely one of the loveliest facilities I have ever had the pleasure of entertaining. We took a tour of Carlton Plaza San Leandro for my grandmother. She was understandably nervous and upset, but our tour guide, Amber, really went out of her way to engage my grandmother in conversation. I could tell that Amber had an active listener when she discovered that my grandmother and her had something in common- they both lived in the same city. What also amazed me was that Amber and the other staff that we met knew every single resident's name. Greeted them warmly and gently probed to make sure that everything was okay. I highly recommend the Carlton for your loved one. My brother left a Yelp review here and my sister and I definitely disagree. I am the primary point person for mom at the Carlton. I signed her up. I make sure the bills get paid, and I know her medical appointments and detailed medical information . My mom has lived here for almost one year and she tells me she is very happy. She loves playing black jack twice a week and watching live entertainment at the stage near the lobby. There are shopping shuttles, movie / driving excursions, bingo, theme parties, current event discussions, and classes. The staff is friendly and greets her by name when they see her. Since I pay the bills, I find management very responsive to her needs and are quick to take off additional charges we do not need- for example mom no longer wanted to wear the emergency pendant since they have emergency pull straps by her bed and in the bathroom. The charge was gone immediately. They are not out to gauge their residents rather they want to make sure the resident is happy, thriving and healthy. My sister and I no longer have sleepless nights worrying about our mom. Jocelyn is the healthcare coordinator for the Carlton and I find her wonderful. She is personable, knowledgeable, experienced responsive to me, and is willing to go the extra mile. Jocelyn is an asset to the Carlton. read more

We had a family member there in Memory Care and it is a nice looking and clean place. They do not have enough staff working there and things happened to our family member like unexplained falls and incidents and the staff is Not trained well enough and are Not certified?? Personal items turned up missing and the worse thing is the contract is Not clear and they charge extra for every little thing even though is it said to be All Inclusive. Many increases in service fees and they seem to add new ones often?? Many errors in the billing too. Caution! A word to the wise should be sufficient! read more

The Carlton Plaza at San Leandro used to be a reasonably nice place to live for my parents. With the new administration the residence has changed for the worse. The new administration's focus is on reducing their liability and increasing revenue. If a resident needs someone to hold their walker so it won't move while they lift themselves out of their chair, a fee is charged to them for "transfer assist". Assisted living residences should have "barrier-free" design in their common areas, in the apartments and especially in the bathrooms. That's not the case in the residence. The showers are not barrier free. If you need to be able to roll-in to the shower with a walker or a wheel chair you won't be able to. And, the administration won't make any changes for you. The burden to make a change is on the resident as is the cost. The food at this residence is revolting. I've had the unfortunate experience of eating dinner with my parents and the food is awful; greasy, processed with no evidence of freshness or healthy cooking techniques. The salad bar has high caloric, heavily mayonnaise based processed salads that don't belong on the menu of a senior community. The green beans were clearly canned; mushy and tasteless. Don't expect any kind of effort to provide foods to accommodate a special diet because none will be made. The administration of this facility has kept my father in the memory care unit against his wishes and his families wishes. read more

17 months what a great time mom had here . Every day was different and busy. She did everything and was independent! Field trips , parties ,holidays, dancing, art class, live entertainment , oh my is this place has it all ! Can't say enough good things about the whole staff. What a nice place to stay. I visited Carlton on behalf of a friend who needed assisted living. From day one I was impressed with Carlton. It is an open, airy, welcoming environment. The public spaces are well furnished and roomy. The hallways are wide and well decorated. The individual studio apt. for my friend was large and inviting with private bath. The staff could not have been more accommodating. We felt welcomed and helped every step along the way. And believe me finding an assisted living facility is not an easy task. And it was one of the more affordable facilities in the East Bay. read more

We are now in our 5th month at the Carlton for my 83 year old Dad. As mentioned in an earlier review it was initially a hard transition for him. While he still would rather be in his long term home, he is in agreement that this was a good decision to move to the Carlton. We all believe he is in a safe and caring environment. Dad has made a few friends and spends much of his time outside of his room engaged and socializing in the lobby and main room. We weren't sure this would happened because he wasn't very social outside of family when he was at home. It is a welcome change to see. The staff are great and the facilities are well organized, clean and cheerful. Having our Dad at the Carlton has enabled us to get some quality time back for ourselves and the rest of the family while still having good predictable time with him - more time to socialize and not worry so much about his home repairs, housekeeping, cooking and finances. Sheila Rodriguez, our Carlton Retirement Counselor, not only helped us transition in smoothly but she remains a good support for us. She is always available for any questions or needs. It certainly takes a village to care for a senior family member so we would also like to acknowledge many of the other staff: Shout-outs to "KC" our Resident Liaison who is available to address any special needs or concerns; Gary, Plant Operations Manager and staff who assisted with the physical move in set-up and always address room issues quickly; Alex, the Dining Room Manager, Raj, chef and staff for coordinating excellent menus and patient dining service for a large, diverse and sometimes demanding number of residents; the LVN and Pharm tech team for their thorough and patient medication management and overall well-being services; the housekeeping staff - always always always a tough job; the resident Personal Care Team for their attention, patience and partnering when providing services; and finally a special acknowledgment for Veronica, the Personal Expressions Director - the resident and family activities, facility decorations, etc. are awesome and absolutely first class. I hope I didn't leave any out anyone... While no place is perfect, so far so good for a facility/ community like this.
