Like many, I sold my old vehicle to CarMax rather than trading it in with new car purchase. I knew about the in person quotes but you can now do it all online. Long story short, between CarMax and Carvana, CarMax won. The process does take some time to complete the inspection and paperwork at the dealership but overall still easier than dealing with private party sales IMO. Pro Tip: if you own your car (loan paid off more than 30 days) but you can't find the title, CarMax can look it up so no need to order a replacement title from the DMV. read more

Called twice only to be told I'd get a call back and ghosted. So I drove back to buena park to speak to service manager. My concern was brushed off multiple times and they kept trying to show me how the treading met their policy requirements for "just good enough to pass." I kept telling them I was concerned about the cracks..not the poor quality treading. Employees/managers claim their policy BS rather than show "good faith" in actually resolving the issue. I was told "just return the vehicle"...as if the process of finding a vehicle, dealing with paperwork, wait time, and insurance was something i wanted to do all over again after thinking I finally secured a vehicle. The transmission never got flushed either..so I spent out of pocket to do that and new set of tires. Typical act nice enough to get you through the papers and then leave you high and dry if you have any issues. As a female the male staff treated me like I was an idiot and kept brushing my concerns off. I've had better experience at private dealer, but i guess to be expected from big name company. read more

I tried called earlier, but the person that was on the phone was not very helpful but when I went down there and I talked to Canelo, I'm sorry if I'm saying your name wrong but he was very helpful. I was asking him why I didn't have a spare tire. and he let me know that new car or sporty cars don't come with a spare tire, but he did give me one of those machines that'll help you fill up the tire if it ever gets I guess flat so that was very, very helpful and I'm very very grateful. I came in to CarMax today to purchase my very first car. A 2021 Nissan Sentra. I have been reluctant to purchase a new vehicle because of the commitment it takes. But I have finally decided to take the leap. I went to three different dealerships before I came to carmax and I must say that the experience that I have had here helped earn them my business. At the other dealerships there was a lot of back and forth and honestly I just don't have the time. Every single person here greeted me with a smile and was polite to me. I set an appointment with carmax and was seen after ten minutes of waiting. Every department seemed fairly busy and there were a few walk in's. They sat me with Don Philips who is a complete professional. He was patient with me and didn't pressure me into purchasing any extra features. I can describe the experience as going into footlocker and buying a pair of sneakers. I came into carmax, Don came out, I asked him for a Nissan I seen online, he showed me the car. The car was the same price as promised plus the taxes and $80 service fee. The taxes hurt but I guess we can't do anything about that. Overall I stood within my budget and walked away with a new car and some financial knowledge. I drove here in my old Corolla which that took off my hands. I don't have the time to sale old car so that gave me peace of mind. I was there a little over three hours, but things would have moved little faster but i lost about a half hour trying to get my approval letter from the bank off the website provided to me. But like I said Don was extremely patient. And extremely busy I might add. He had a separate set of customers waiting for his services but was able to manage it all very well. Bought the extended warranty for my 2017 Ford Explorer, but what's the use on buying it, when the service department NEVER answers or returns your calls!! I told him I needed to keep looking and he was understanding, even holding the vehicle I liked for me. I ended up visiting the Costa Mesa CarMax and had the worst experience with Sadaf, a sales guy at the Costa Mesa location. I came back to Buena Park and met with Don, who helped me test drive even more vehicles. Ultimately, I purchased the original car I had him hold for me. This is the 2nd vehicle I have bought from CARMAX. The first lasted about 8 years until it died end of September this year. Attempted searching for a decent reliable used vehicle on FB, Craigslist & word of mouth. A majority of the ads were fake or the sellers flaky. If it was a decent vehicle it was literally gone in 60 secs., CARMAX actually has a pretty neat system on searching the stock available & checking to see if you prequalify for a car loan. They work with a lot of finance companies & can have you driving out the door. This particular location sales floor was very clean, air conditioned & smelled great. The staff & sales people were nice. Their system is actually quite impressive from sales, waiting rooms & the closing out the deal. I was helped by Sal R. & had me driving off the lot in a SUV nicer then the one I went to see. He then brought me to Jennifer who helped with the final details like DMV paperwork & the warranties. Sal was good about checking in on me while the vehicle was getting ready to debut the world as my new used vehicle. I would say it was a long day but easy process! read more

I went in for my 11am appointment today to sell a car. They checked me in and asked me to wait in the waiting area. They said the inspection would take about 45 minutes. After waiting an hour and a half I went to ask what was the ETA and they didn't even have me checked in. They apologized and had to find my keys and said they would prioritize me once they found out who had the keys. It took an additional hour to get the estimate which came in 25% lower than the internet offer. In total I was there for 2.5 hours to just waste my time. Came here today to sell my old 2015 Mitsubishi mirage. We've been having trouble with it (check engine light on) and had already bought a replacement vehicle late last year, so we decided it was time to move on and part ways. After some research, we decided that selling was probably our best option. Due to the repairs needed, we did not want to sell privately, so we opted for carmax. I had an appointment for 11 am and we walked in and were seen right away after checking in at the front counter. The guy who took my key to complete the appraisal said it would be about 25-30 min. We waited in one of the waiting rooms where they gave vending machines and coffee, as well as outlets. After the appraisal was done, we walked over to the business office to review the offer. We felt like we were getting a very fair price and decided to go ahead and sell. The person at that counter said it would be about a 45 min wait and about 15 min to complete the offer. We were there a total of about 2 hours and walked out with a check in hand. It was a very easy and transparent process all the way through. I am very disappointed that the car that I purchased on May 9th at the Buena Park location (Toyota Yaris ia 2017) has had multiple return service issues. The one that really upset me is that the brakes had to be replaced. I was pretty sure that was illegal. Why aren't cars checked out before selling them? The salesperson, Scott Goff even told me that the brake pads had been replaced. Only for me to drive away and have them start squeaking soon after. He also never came back out after the sale and left me standing outside for 20mins in the hot sun for him to take a picture of me with the yellow bow. Another person came out and took the bow and put it on another car. When I got in the car to leave, it wouldn't start because of the key fob issue that came on the dash immediately. So I had to go back on the salesfloor and find Scott. He also told me I was not allowed to have my mechanic look at the car before purchase. WTF ?!? Update - they were supposed to replace TWO Drive-Shafts today. They just called me to let me know the vendor sent a wrong part. They are trying to get another one within an hour. I hope they can. Or I may just return this vehicle. The first issue I had was a key fob light that immediately came on. No one contacted me until I bothered them and bothered them. I realize this is an independent person, and when he finally did contact me, he was great. But I think the ball was dropped communicating that I needed him by CarMax. Then, a tire pressure light came on the dash. When I washed it, part of the plastic seal wasn't attached near the window. Then, the air conditioner started making a bad noise when I turned it to high on a hot day. I was once stuck in a parking lot with groceries in the car because of the key fobs. The latest issue (today) was that the car started having a vibrational noise in the front, only to find out today that it needs two new drive-shafts. I have spent so much of my time. The service folks are great and always explain well. But what is this? I was told CarMax was a reputable and convenient company. And I feel like they are taking all of my free time. I need some kind of compensation for this- like free oil changes (for example.) I take care of a sick family member and work. This has been very difficult for me. I am tempted to return the vehicle and tell everyone I know not to buy from CarMax. Also, I was asked to confirm my test drive 4 times before my appt and contacted by multiple salespeople. This is not the way CarMax's supposed ease and convenience is advertised. Update Number 2 - Have called customer relations multiple times. They sent another email saying this is "resolved." It's not. Called twice to speak to a supervisor that was supposed to call me back. Still no calls. I WILL call again. Update - Got a call back from Customer Relations from a woman named, Raja. On 9/7/2025 CARMAX website offered my 87-year-old mother $16,000 for her 2016 Toyota Avalon, emailing her an offer code. (This was my father's car, and he passed away two years ago - we finally got her to agree to sell it.) When she got to CARMAX on 9/9/2025, it was determined that the odometer had 22,000 LESS miles on it than she reported in order to get the offer. (Reported mileage = 46,000; actual mileage = 23,800) CARMAX told her that due to the mileage discrepancy, they could only offer her $13,000. FOR A CAR THAT HAD LESS MILES ON IT THAN THEY'D BASED THEIR ESTIMATE ON. And, then to add a little insult to metaphorical injury, the representative implied that perhaps my87-year-old mother might have gotten under the hood to roll back the mileage. Not sure what some reviewers are complaining about. I had most of my information figured/sorted out by the time I stopped in to test drive my new car. My experience at the dealership went something like this: I had been looking at cars online for maybe about over a week and I found my ideal car at a different Carmax in San Diego county. It had all the features I liked and I was able to reserve the car and ship it (free) to this location. After I confirmed my shipping order, I began to receive text messages to let me know when the car left San Diego (Thursday), when it got to Buena Park (Friday) and when I'd like to set up a test drive appointment (Saturday). I was also given a heads up ahead of time to make sure to print out my proof of insurance so I could actually drive my reserved car off the lot. The updates I received were frequent and very thorough as well as concise, straight to the point, professional and polite. On the day of the test drive, I got there at store opening (9am) and was greeted warmly. Check in took only a minute because I had confirmed my appointment beforehand and a couple of minutes later I met my salesman Christopher Schuchman. I ended up test driving the car shortly thereafter and after that began to talk numbers. Chris was personable, he was patient with any questions I had, he broke down all the financing numbers/plans as simple as possible and he made my car purchasing experience pretty simple and straightforward. He helped me find the best deal for me. The transaction only took a few hours (and compared to the last two cars I bought) was two hours shorter. Signing the final paperwork was quite a breeze and I drove off the lot with my new car right a little after noon. If you are unprepared and lack patience in understanding how long an auto vehicle transaction may truly take, then I would recommend going somewhere else. However if you come in prepared having done your research and communicated with the dealership prior to your in person arrival, then the process goes off without a hitch. All in all though, I would definitely recommend shopping for a car here at Carmax Buena Park. My car buying experience was positive, swift and the customer service in my case was exemplary. 5 out of 5 stars. (Only downside was you don't get to keep the yellow CarMax bow lol ) read more

I called this location & Ivan was able to get me scheduled the following week to bring my car in. Ivan was very kind, and helped me out right away! He listened to my concerns & addressed them. Robert was the manager who was also helping me and he was excellent! He updated me literally everyday, and I appreciated the communication so much. He was very kind, and informed me on anything new that needed to be done & wanted to really make sure before my car was given back that everything was good. On top of that, they even got me a rental through enterprise when I didn't qualify to get a loaner due to my insurance not being able to extend the insurance and that was totally fine. Received an online offer of $3200 for my 2008 Honda Fit with only 110K miles. Made an appointment to sell it today at 1pm. Had to wait over an hour to even be seen at the Business Office, and then had to wait 20 min in line to be seen. Then I was told they were dropping their offer down to $2200 because "the clutch needs service" - no specifics, details, or anything else. I replaced the clutch and flywheel 10K ago, and I'm the only driver, so I would know if there was something wrong with it. Just sounds like they were looking for an excuse to drop their offer by $1000 and rolled the dice on claiming clutch issues. What is the point of making an appointment if I'm still going to be waiting almost 2 hours just to be lowballed and lied to about the reasoning? Off to Carvana.... CarMax Buena Park should seriously retrain their employee named Beto. He was extremely rude and unprofessional. I came to sell two cars and also to buy one. I asked to see a Toyota Sequoia and Toyota Sienna. He rushed my family, walked far ahead of us, and showed no basic respect while we were with two small children. He rushed me while viewing the cars, handled the seats aggressively, and even said I should go to Toyota because he works for CarMax, not Toyota. At the Sienna, he locked the car and told me to go home and research before coming back if I didn't already know which car I wanted. This was shocking and unacceptable customer service. I asked to speak with a manager and was thankfully transferred to Hector, who was professional, kind, and extremely helpful. Because of him, I was able to choose a Grand Highlander. CarMax didn't have it, but Hector kindly referred me to a Toyota dealer. In the end, I successfully purchased a 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander Platinum. Huge thanks to Hector for saving this experience. CarMax should seriously retrain Beto -- his behavior was unacceptable. read more

She answered all my questions. She was calm. She was not pushy. She was chill. Which made me feel comfortable. I had a horrible day and she did everything she can to keep me happy and positive. When I went to go get coffee they were out and she went out of her way to find hot coffee for me and brought it to me. That's how I knew she really cared about her customer.
