I went to CarMax to test drive a specific vehicle that was showing as available on their lot. The front desk checked me in, confirmed the car was available, and directed me to go take a look. I was told all sales reps were currently with other customers but that I'd get a call when one was free. About 15 minutes later, I got the call and went back to the front to meet the rep, only to be told that the car had just been placed on hold and I could no longer test drive it. This was frustrating, especially since the car definitely wasn't on hold when I checked in. Even more frustrating: my wife checked the CarMax site two minutes after we left, and the car was listed as available again. It felt like they marked it on hold just to avoid the test drive. If I could rate this place 0 stars I would, apparently I was banned from ever buying or selling a car at any CarMax dealership in the nation and they refuse to give me a reason why. As a customer who purchased 3 previous cars from CarMax over the years this is unbelievable. I was already pre approved on a vehicle and ready to finalize my purchase when an alert popped up on their computer and the manager came back with a letter stating they chose to not do business with me. I contacted their customer relations department which was a joke, waited days to hear back, from Dana, with no resolution and no answer as to why I'm banned. I'm just a single mom with a severely autistic child, I need a car because my other car (not from CarMax) was a lemon and is being repurchased by the company, I need to be able to take him to his therapies and doctors appointments. Fernando did take a photo of me and said it was protocol to test drive a car from them. I used to sell cars, I've never taken a photo of a client before they could test drive a car, he just made me feel very uncomfortable. Orlando was very professional, and he helped me through the process, but Fernando just made me feel uncomfortable with the photo taking, and wouldn't even let me hold the car, I wanted to hold it at least until Saturday so I could bring my disabled mother down to sign the paperwork on her end, since she was my co-signer, but he wanted me to do the deal right away and I told him I had to come back with the down payment, and he told me to wait until another car became available "because they always get these cars in." I felt like he was trying to dissuade me from buying the car that I wanted. Who knows, I think it's unfair that I wasn't given a reason, and I feel as a consumer I have a right to know. Sales person (Giovanni) went back in and never came back out after I told him the other vehicles I had already looked into and wanted to test drive. If you pay out of pocket for tax and DMV fees with a personal check make sure to take proof of your account number and proof of insurance. Completely unprofessional, Completely unethical, completely disrespectful, completely sneaky. This location lies both to their customers and their lenders. They change numbers behind your back, and after they sell you a car, they harass you into changing your contracts to more benefit them. They constantly have attitude, lag, are impatient, and cannot be trusted. They roll their eyes, they sigh all loud, have a nasty tone, and don't answer all your questions. They hide problems with their vehicles, and they sell you a vehicle then once you leave with the vehicle they will threaten you into taking away the vehicle unless you come back in and put a bigger down payment. For example, I came in to purchase a 23,000$ vehicle and I put down $6500 then 7 days later they called me and told me that if I didn't come in with another $6500 that they were going to go back on the contract that was already discussed and signed and take the car back. I told them no, that's not gonna happen. So they told me to come in to "discuss other options" and when I did they then told me since the car was back and parked in their lot, I wasn't leaving with it unless I gave them that same day the $6500. I literally was in the dealership for 10 hours ACTUALLY 10 hours. I ended up having to put someone down as a co signer in order to avoid the extra payment. After I added a co signer, they allowed me to leave with my vehicle. Mind you, I had my 2 year old daughter with me in there for 10 hours and my 3 year old daughter was also present in there with me. On Tuesday and Wednesday, I took two separate cars to a dealership, but their offers were $2,500 below what Carvana and AutoNation offered for each car. I noted that their offer was also $2,500 below the Edmunds average market value and asked who determines the final offer. A young, short Asian guy came out from the back, admitting he set the final offer. His dismissive, unprofessional attitude, combined with his delusional and incompetent handling for the position, was frustrating when I questioned the low offer. A couple hundred dollars off I could understand, but $2,500 below for both cars clearly shows issues with his decision-making. I regret not noting his name. Other dealers I consulted matched the market average, confirming the offer was unreasonable. My wife and I visited Carmax Buena Park on Friday, May 23 to get an appraisal for our 2013 SUV. While waiting, we found a late-model SUV we were seriously interested in and asked to speak with a sales representative. When we met Orlando, things went downhill quickly. From the start, Orlando came off as abrupt and disinterested, like helping us was a chore. He did show us the car and allowed a test drive, but when we explained we were still considering another vehicle elsewhere, he literally walked away mid-conversation. Rude at best. We ended up deciding to buy the SUV from Carmax the next day. Even then, Orlando maintained the same grumpy, dismissive attitude - despite the fact we were buying a car through him. After the sale, we looked up reviews and found that our experience with Orlando's unprofessional behavior was not unique. Apparently, this has been going on for years with no change. This does not reflect well on Carmax Buena Park management. As for the SUV itself--it was a great vehicle, but within two days we realized the interior height didn't work for us long-term. We returned the car using Carmax's 10-Day Money-Back Guarantee. The return itself was uneventful, but that is when the trouble started. They issued a manual check and told us not to deposit it for 7 days to allow for processing of our original check. The Carmax check itself had a statement stating payment was conditioned upon clearance of the customer's payment check. I called Carmax the next business day and was told by a manager that our check would be processed that day (May 27) and to proceed with deposit of its check. Our payment check did clear that day and the Carmax check was deposited as well. TWICE over the next three business days, their check bounced. We went back to ask why. Carmax had BOTH our money and the vehicle, yet they still wouldn't honor their own refund check. The answer was "company policy." When we pointed out that this policy made no ethical or logical sense under the circumstances, we were met with the same response - company policy. This rigid, customer-unfriendly approach is punitive and unjustified. Bottom line: We loved the car but hated the experience. The dismissive attitude by its personnel and the purported company policy with zero accountability sends a troubling message about how little Carmax seems to value the trust and dignity of its customers. After 10 miles of driving this car, the ABS Light came on, and then after both front wheels locked up I could not drive it. Carmax was able to get a tow truck and bring it back to the lot. It's now Thursday, September 28th, and no one or anybody from that dealer has called me to sympathize or update me on my car. Not even my salesperson Scott has followed up. Come to find out, I spoke with a former employee who left that dealership a few months ago and told me that it's the worst place you'll get service. Also told me "Even if it's a quick fix, the techs will make you wait days or weeks to fix your car, just to make you wait". He's absolutely right!!! My boyfriend purchased a car in December 2024 from Carmax. The car was fine until it completely died on him on February 3 and had to get towed back to their service center. And that is the last time we have seen it. We can never get a hold of anyone in the service department, they call and never leave a message. When you call back you get sent to Marcelo's voicemail. He has a job he can't always answer the phone so being able to call someone back and get a response is not too much to ask. They have given him the complete run around and we are extremely disappointed with their service department. All we want is a phone call back to find out the status of a car he had for only one month! We shouldn't have to deal with this. I was completely carless and was relying on this process to trade in and get back on the road. We did a ton of paperwork, only for me to be denied at the very last minute--with no explanation. They didn't even try and push their car warranty program (which we would never have bought anyway - btw - never buy a 3rd party non-manufacturer car warranty ever). My nephew had a car shipped down from Tacoma, WA, to Buena Park, CA. It sat in the lot for four days before he was notified it was ready. We went down to pick it up on April 28, only to be told that it had a cracked side mirror and hadn't been smog-checked yet. An appointment was made for Monday, May 1, at 7:00 p.m. to come pick it up. He called before we went to the dealership and was told it was ready this time. When we went in, Joshua, the "salesman" who handled our sale, told us that the mirror had not been replaced and they were still waiting to have it smog checked. He went to the service center to see what he could do and left us hanging for at least a half hour. Once he finally returned, he said that they had smog checked the car and he could take the car today, and then return when the part for the mirror came in. We said okay. After test driving the car, we filled out the paperwork needed to purchase the car. Then we waited another 30 minutes or so while they washed the car. During that time, we spoke with the sales manager, Alma, who also gave us a lot of useless placating statements saying everything went through the call center. She did offer a tank of gas and some coupons for future service. Big deal! What is the point of a salesman having a card if everything goes through a call center?! Needless to say, the customer service in the sales department was deplorable. The finance department and signing department were on top of things. My wife and I Bought a Toyota sienna from here this past weekend. The whole experience was great except for one employee. Giovanni couldn't be bothered to come open up the car for me. He kept saying something about the QR code and that they were really busy. I said "I just want to see inside the car". when he came out to open the car he was extremely rude got in my face at one point. The QR code just takes you to their website letting you know the car was available. Not sure about you but I like to see the inside of the vehicle before dropping a small fortune. I was just so frustrated and ready to leave. He opened the van and I told him if he was busy he could go and he left. Right before we left Jailen gave us a call and asked how we were doing. Wow somebody who actually has some customer service skills. I told her about my experience, she was super apologetic and did everything to help my wife and I have the best experience buying a car. Seriously she's a 5 star employee and this company should make sure she's taken care of. If you go ask for her, she's no pressure, super attentive and very kind. I was looking for a place that would buy my 15 year old Mini Cooper. I went to the BMW/Mini Cooper dealer and was given a super low price. The car had insanely low mileage and was in excellent shape. I figured that this would help with the sale of the price, but this wasn't necessarily the case with Car Max. I didn't want to deal with riding with strangers as they came by to test drive the vehicle. Nor did I want to deal with anyone that might present me with a bogus cashier's check. Finally, my biggest fear is that the new owner wouldn't register their vehicle in their name, despite me removing myself from the title through DMV. With all of this being said, I decided to just sell the vehicle to Car Max. I was greeted by a very friendly staff who were very personable. They sent an appraiser out to look at the vehicle and were impressed with how clean the vehicle was and how well we maintained it. The mileage was also something that they knew would be a great selling point. However, I was told that despite all of this, it wouldn't increase the offer that would be presented with. Seriously!!!! It's odd because they'd be quick to low ball an offer if it was in bed shape. So odd! Anyway, I just needed to be done with this process. The offer was $3,500 less than Kelly Blue Book's value. Seriously! So I really thought about it and brought the vehicle back home. BMW's offer was even lower. However, I really wanted to be done with this vehicle and move on. The beauty of Car Max's process is that they really take care of their customers. They remove your name from the title and transfer it over to them ASAP. They also provide you with a sense of security because they have a legal department that will take care of any tickets that could occur as DMV is processing the paperwork. If the vehicle is involved in an accident prior to the change of ownership paperwork bring processed by DMV, their legal department will clear it up immediately. You are provided with paperwork that you can present to law enforcement if anything occurs. You also have the number to their legal department, so they really do take care of their customers. Car Max doesn't keep any vehicles older than 10 years on their property. Anything older than 10 years is auctioned off. They will take ANY vehicle!! If it's not running, they said that they'd take it if you can tow it over to their property. I think that this is great for anyone who just wants to be done with a vehicle that you really don't need. I sold the vehicle prior to the pandemic, so I'm sure that people have been getting more for the vehicles lately. I don't know if I would sell another vehicle to Car Max unless it was something that I just wanted to be done with. I know people who have purchased vehicles from Car Max and they've been happy with the process. It all depends on the goal that you have in mind when you visit Car Max.
