I was excited about purchasing a Mazda CX-5 from Car Max and had the car shipped from one Charlotte location to Independence. 30 minutes before my appointment to purchase, the salesman texted me that someone had sideswiped the car during transit, but it was just a few scratches that they could fix. Upon arrival, there were multiple scratches and dents around the vehicle, both passenger-side doors, rear rim, and including additional scratches the other side of the car and back. These additional scratches were not disclosed, and the salesman's message absolutely downplayed the damage. After the team tried fixing it, some scratches and the dents were still clearly visible. Carmax wouldn't adjust the price despite the new (unrepaired) damage. I don't think they're going to update the listings pictures, and I feel like there was prior undisclosed damage to the car. If you're looking to purchase a car from here, be extremely careful that you're not getting played. read more

Purchased a truck in November 25, in February of 26 I noticed there was motor oil on the engine when I went to change oil. tried to address the issue before it was out of warranty but got nowhere with carmax. I had only put 3000 miles on the truck and two weeks after the 90 days warranty was up the engine blew the rear main seal. new motor is $15,000. Do yourself a favor and don't give any money to this company. Not to mention they failed to disclose the premium trim wasn't 4wd. The truck had missing running boards that were taken off after they took the listing photos. And the rear seat folding mechanism was broken. Their "125 point inspection" is garbage. It cost me $2200 to fix many of things that Carmax's 125 point maintenance was supposed to catch. Specifically, lights, battery, alignment, spark plugs, serpentine belt, filters, etc. Everyone of those we had to get done after the sale. The belt was cracked in so many places, the battery was under sized and also failed under testing, spark plugs were completely black and worn out, the list is long. I went with my fiancé to sell her car to CarMax, and the paperwork process was awful. Sherry, who handled it, was rude, dismissive, and clearly didn't care about providing good service. My husband and I came to CarMax in hopes of trying a variety of cars in one location. We have busy schedules so convenience and efficiency is a must. We made an appointment but despite arriving on time CarMax was running about 20 minutes behind. I wish we had known this because then we would have shown up 20 minutes later. We perused a bunch of cars on the lot. Most cars aren't locked so you can sit in them. The customer has no way of knowing if a car on the lot is available or not and unfortunately we really liked a car that, unbeknownst to us, was unavailable. Our sales rep was great. He worked hard but I could tell he was flustered. It was a short staffed day as the lady at check in said. The whole process was slow slow slow. The sales rep has to put the plates on the car and then drive it in and out of the labyrinth they call a parking lot. Then you change seats and drive the car yourself. We only drove 2 cars in 1.5 hours. We left and drove to a Volvo dealership down the road. We drove a car and were offered a beverage (CarMax did not on this 90 degree day) all within 20 min. I came to Car Max with my brother to get car. There are a few things that we really liked about his car shopping experience but a few that we didn't. The likes: 1) The sales people are not pushy, they don't try to up sale you to a bigger better more expensive vehicle for a bigger commission (I think it's a standard commission for the sale), 2) They will send you a pre approval in advance to let you know what kind of car you qualify for. 3) You can walk out with your vehicle that day. The dislikes: 1) Everything is done via computer so you view an online gallery to pick your car, you purchase it then you see your car. 2) The car buying experience here seems kind of impersonal, kind of like robots trained to do one job one way (I guess that can be taken either way). Buyer beware. TLDR; Carmax sold a me vehicle "unsafe to drive" (their words exactly) and gave me the absolute run-around instead of trying to rectify their mistake. I am now car-less. Long story: I purchased a car mid-April and immediately noticed a leak. Took it into Carmax for a repair and they found the frame had been cut. The service technician quite literally told me the car was unsafe to drive and couldn't be returned to me. From there, I was given the run around - sales manager after sales manager, all the way to the GM, Chen. All of whom refused to offer anything for the inconvenience of literally leaving me without a car. Literally. After it was all said and done, they couldn't even manage to issue a check in the amount that matched what I paid for the vehicle. Four hours later, I am without a car and in absolute shock. I purchased a 2017 Nissan Altima from them. Drive the car on the interstate and the stealing wheel shook a little from side to side. Called Carmax they recommended me to take it to Goodyear. The tires are directional and someone put one of the tires on wrong. After 4 hours of waiting, I drove the car and it was great. Fast forward to this past Thursday and the car shut off twice for unknown reasons. I had to wait until Wednesday coming to get the vehicle looked at. Carmax on Kefler, avoid at all costs. Paid $100 to transfer a vehicle. Looked at the vehicle on a Friday but wanted to show it my wife which we did the next morning. On Sunday I told the salesperson that I'd get back to him shortly. So now I've made two visits, several hours of my time, and spent the $100 on the transfer. On Monday I get a text saying I need to schedule an appointment to see the car in order to maintain the reservation. I tell them I've seen it already and that I told the salesperson I'd get back to them BUT if a reservation was needed, to schedule me for the next Saturday. They replied that the salesperson would contact me and did not schedule my appointment. On Tuesday I message the salesperson that I'll take the car, funds ready to go. I transferred money out of a brokerage account for the down payment, which is taxable. I contact my loaner, get approval letter. I empty my trade-in car of all personal belongings. They reply and tell me it's being transferred to someone else. Huh? I learn that the vehicle is still at my local facility so the right thing to do would be to cancel the transfer, right? Admit to the next guy that a mistake was made and do right by me, the first guy in line? Nope, they said they didn't want to create a "customer service issue" with the next guy in line. Offered to help me out with a transfer "up to" the one I already paid and "maybe they can help out with a little extra if it's more". Wrong they ask me to leave and go buy a new sticker to prove ownership. So I leave go to KIA who explains to me they don't sell stickers but there are company's that will certify my ID and send me a new sticker for $100.00. So I contact these company's and buy to $100.00 sticker. I returned to Carmax after resolving the stipulation to find out they just don't feel right honoring the offer they gave originally. Carmax sold me this suv issues. I only put 4000 miles and it depreciated to worthless, a $25,000.00 Lexus. Carmax only provided one set of keys and we agreed several times that I would get the second set. I have a yellow slip for the second set but there is no communication so I had to pay for tow and second set of keys. Too many associates deal with one customer. It is disappointing when you gift your business to a company, only to have it minimized and disrespected. I took my truck for service on the steering column of my truck (under warranty). I learned that the parts required, are currently on back order. Obviously, when you are dealing with necessary repairs around steering of a vehicle, personal safety should be top of mind for all parties concerned. It is not for Carmax. My warranty with Fidelity, alotted for a 7 day rental, which is less than needed due to the part being on back order. Following a day of phone calls, as well as a return to Carmax to partner on suitable options, none were offered. As a matter of fact, their dismissive attitude was painfully disappointing. No solution was offered. Not a rental extension, not a loaner. They released my car without repair and dismissed me to be on my way without ANY REGARD FOR MY SAFETY. It is important that I warn as many potential customers as possible to steer clear. Take you hard earned dollars elsewhere. Don't expect any good communication with this store. We bought a 2023 SUV- our sales rep was amazing, and we were very happy, until we weren't. I have a co-signer on the car I traded in, he needed to go by a location and sign paperwork to hand it over. Once we got there, they said the paperwork was typed up wrong. They got him to sign it three different ways to "cover his bases and so he wouldn't have to come back". This was a lie. I got a call the next day stating that my fiancé and I would have to come back and redo all the paperwork we did for the trade in and the new SUV and then my stepfather would also have to come back and resign his again. All the lady had to offer us was a free gas tank fill up and a few coupons for oil changes (which we never got). We made the time to go back in person and resign (Thursday) and made an appointment for my stepfather to go in the next couple of days following (that Saturday). The Lady assured me that it would absolutely be at the other location in time for my stepfather to resign and that we should have no worries, as we were going on a trip and wouldn't be in town to oversee. We called Saturday morning to the location to make sure that the paperwork was there and ready for him; my stepfather got there a few hours later, and the paperwork was nowhere in sight and said that it wouldn't be ready for him to come and sign until almost 4 days later. A complete waste of time and gas for him yet again. I called and tried to speak with ANY manager for help, and no one was available for me. The lady I did speak with got the whole story and typed up an email for a manager to speak with me directly about the horrible communication and lies we have been told throughout the entire process- all because someone typed in a name incorrectly on the original paperwork. NO ONE has called, emailed, apologized or spoken to myself or my fiancé about what has occurred almost 2 weeks ago. The lady who we re-signed with that Thursday, the same one that assured us it would be ready for him that Saturday, gave me a call today to ask why we haven't signed the paperwork yet. My stepfather is a truck driver and most of the time not in this state. Both times he has went by and tried to sign, the paperwork was not there, not ready or incorrect. I told her I was insanely disappointed and wanted to know why she said what she did if it wasn't true. She gave a run-around answer. I told her that my stepfather is planning on going by today to re-sign for the millionth time at the other location. This is the worst communication I have ever received, and I plan on spreading the word. I hope everyone knows what they're in for when they choose to trade in or buy a car from this location or CarMax in general. I am glad that today we might finally be done with this entire mess. If I could give zero stars I would. Absolutely awful. I bought my 2019 Ford Fusion in June 2022. By Feb. 2023 I had a transmission module problem. Carmax couldn't get it in for weeks, so they made an appt. at another auto shop. Then trying to get the warranty company to authorize the repair took at least 2 weeks! 2-weeks without my less than 1-year owned car. Broke down yesterday, the bushing/cap broke off of my steering column. Couldn't get anyone on the phone from Carmax regarding service, whether or not they could take it in- sat on hold for at least 3-minutes. Tried to get roadside assistance, got hung up on twice. Finally had to call AAA for my tow. Get to the auto shop, called Max care to initiate a claim, and start the process for a rental, only to be told that they cannot authorize rentals until they receive the claim and it has been authorized by them. So, what am I supposed to do, wait another 2-weeks for them to bother coming out to authorize the repair, then get a rental? Or, I can rent it on my own, and hope to god for reimbursement? I don't think so. Why on earth do I pay thousands for my warranty for? When I asked to speak to a supervisor, the extremely rude agent said "no, I will not transfer you as there is nobody else for you to speak to", mind you, she NEVER identified herself as a supervisor, manager, ect. Getting information to speak to anyone here is a joke. I guess I will either have to trade my car in, wait until paid off and sell, but one thing is for sure, I will NEVER buy from Carmax again. I purchased my car from this dealership in Jan 23 by the second week of March my run flat tire had a blow out. After purchasing a new tire from a local tire chain the tire technician informed me that I would need an alignment due to the significant misalignment of the front wheels. I made an appointment with Carmax for an alignment and to investigate a sound I had been hearing when accelerating up steep inclines or going around deep turns. I sat at Carmax on 3/17/23 for 4 hours just to be told the maintenance tech doesn't hear the sound and Carmax "doesn't have the tool" to do my alignment. Now they did refer me to the BMW dealership across the street and offered to pay. After getting an appointment with BMW the service consultant took one look at my car and said this is not an alignment issue the wheel (passenger front the same one that blew out) has a visible angle. Upon inspection it was determined that the vehicle has collision damage! I reached out to Carmax for an explanation and resolution and after weeks of back and forth (even with the video inspection from BMW) Carmax is not taking responsibility for selling a damaged vehicle! So I call arrange delivery appointment, someone will call 4 hours before the appointment, NOTHING! 1 hour past the appointment they call to reschedule, nothing for tomorrow. Okay I'll come get it, now I'm here forever waiting on the paperwork because home delivery and pick up aren't the same? How can I not e-sign from home? Horrible experience. I received appraisal on Saturday and went today to sell car. I brought a print out of my lease buyout of $17,000 and was told that the "dealer buyout" was $27,000. My Offer was $25,000 and I would have owed $2,000 to sell them my car. I never hear of a "dealer buyout" when I brought the car in for appraisal. I made sure I told them it was a lease buyout but apparently that means nothing until you get to the final steps. I was with my daughter and in a bind and needed to leave the car overnight. I was told they would not provide a parking permit. Total B.S and zero empathy by the manager. This just seems illegal, bait and switch. Never again, stay far away. read more

I set up an appointment online and went in the next morning. It took about 30 minute for the official offer. The official offer matched exactly to the estimate. So we went ahead and sold it on the spot. I did take some time to get the paperwork and the check. I would make sure you plan for at least 1.5-2.0 hours for this process. My expericence with Carmax on Independence has been horrible. I have received the worst customer service ever and I will make to leave a review on every media outlet possible in hopes that no one else will receive bad customer service. First of all, if your salesperson is Alonso , he will not be willing to help you because it's hot outside. That was the main point of our first interaction and conversation. I actually think he was forced to come service me because first the first words out his mouth, he didn't seem willing to assist. I actually thought he was new so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I explained that I was shopping for a vehicle because I "needed" another vehicle as well as a smaller payment due to being laid off for 2 1/2 years and just starting back at work so I wasn't sure exactly what vehicle I wanted. I just wanted something reliable and affordable. That seems to have made things worse. He gave me a few vehicles to choose from(about 5) and then I decided to look at 2. He made it clear it was too hot outside for him so I went looking by myself. I could only find 1, and then he miraculously appeared and helped me find the other one. I didn't like either. I asked were there any other cars and he said no. After leaving, I spoke with the person who referred me to carmax , and they explained they have several locations and explained to me how to search for other vehicles. I found over 500 in my price range to choose from. I contacted Alonso and gave him my choices. Things went from happy to hell quickly. The 2 vehicles I inquired on were $3,000 price difference. I asked about the estimated payments and it was only a $50 difference, so I said that seemed crazy to me and I would just look somewhere else. Now, I'm saying this because of the customer service I've been receiving from him this far and he already seemed to not care about selling a car so I knew it wouldn't matter to him. Well he decided to continue to be a smart ass via text. He offered me a manger to speak with and I accepted knowing that probably would mean nothing but still I accepted so I could advise someone of the service I received. The manager, Dylan, did call and listen to my concerns. He explained how Carmax is different than other dealers and how things should've been explained to me. Purchased a car from Carmax for the second time. I originally went to the location in Pineville, NC for the first car. Recently i chose the location on Krefeld Dr in Charlotte, NC as i was out searching and that location was closer to me at the time. Sadly this store did not do what is expected from a customer service point of view. Sold me a car with only one key fob that was not an original manufactured. Found out that this key fob did not even have a cut out key for the car inside. It had a dummy key that was uncut. I tried calling this place several times for 3 days with no answer, even drove 1.5 hours to get back there and the business office was no help and service station was closed. After calling and calling I finally got a hold of the service department on day 4. I was told to come in the following morning for keys to the car. I drove another 1.5 hours missing time from work to get here. All for the service station to only have the knock off key given cut out by the person who comes to their location to cut keys. I was told that I couldn't get another key through them. I would have to go to the dealership/manufacturer. This was a huge inconvenience and no apology or sacrifice was made to satisfy a customer who had just spent a lot of money with these guys. I will never buy another car from them again!! I was treated like royalty the first car buying experience in Pineville, but this second time at Krefeld Dr Charlotte, NC made me feel like i was worthless! read more

We had a great experience recently buying our new "used" Toyota Pruis. Yes, their salespeople are very busy, and you may have to wait. But they also don't pressure you and have very fair set prices for everything. Overall, with their warranty, they are the best used car deal in town. So, you can't have it both ways, people of the Yelp. If you want someone to kiss the ground you walk on and fawn all over you for a grand or two more, go somewhere else. read more
