UPDATE: Since our encounter from original review. CarMax has made this right by selling us the truck. We worked with corporate and an asset team and came to resolution that the manager was acting unprofessional and reserved the truck for himself or someone he knew therefore never submitting our paper work. Very difficult large corporation to navigate when buying a car you call and you're talking to someone in their national office, not where the car is. We waited over three weeks for communication about a car we had pre-ordered. So frustrated and no one was helpful. DECEPTIVE ADVERTISING!!! Based on a photo of the car I was interested in, I paid nearly $800.00 to bring it to my state. The photo of the car looked like SHOWROOM MATERIAL! When I arrived at the dealership, the car was far from what the photo showed. Small dents, unmatched paint covering scratches, rubber hanging from the bottom of the door panels. This is my second car from CarMax in Warwick, Rhode Island. I visited several times for test drives, and each staff member was incredibly helpful and pleasant. While the paperwork process took a bit longer than expected, I was happy not to have to go to the DMV--everything was handled right in the office. Not very good in customer service. There is no help in service. Not everyone has the same info. So very confusing. They sell you bad cars in areas that are not covered by their warranty, so they never have to pay to fix them. Just be careful. They sell cars that are ready to go and need the major repair they fall back on that inspection to say it was just at the mark to sell it with no warning. This is dangerous. They get double the money with no help on a car they sold someone 7 months ago. Check the price of book value first they all are double. I took it higher, but because my husband got upset and with justification cause the problems had been going on so long, he had it for my stress. The executive team decided to end my call cause my husband swore, so they said. I did not hear him, but we were on speaker. He deals with customers, too he is never that arrogant and condescending as Tom is. Lots of lies come out of their mouths. 2 stars only cause Janet is awesome. Also, I thought I should have 4 decent tires on car 2, same in front back, and two are different. Be very, very careful. Asking the other person in our car ,my husband did not swear at them he actually turned his head from the phone, and she heard a bit of it. She used it to side in the wrong. If I can give anyone I know advice - DO NOT BUY YOUR CAR FROM CARMAX! I went to Carmax Warwick, RI on June 2, 2023 and sat with a gentleman to buy my Jeep. When I sat with him he pulled Jeep's from all over the country and found one. He said and I quote, "oh! And it's a limited X which has the luxury package included!" I said perfect I want it! Ship it! The sale rep then provided me that day with the attached Experian auto check report. When the Jeep arrived on June 7, 2023, I test drove it and told them I heard a hissing sound from the vents. Another male sales rep said, "oh that's just the radio," to which I replied, "the radio isn't on." Should have known then that they like to lie to women but I moved forward with the purchase because it was under their warranty for 90 days. Which it turned out to be that there was no Freon in the car which made the noise and air conditioner not work. But... hey, it was the radio according to that salesperson. I do realize now 9 months later that I don't love the Jeep as much as I thought I would. I miss having my Murano. I found a Murano at Carmax in PA so I quoted my Jeep to see what they'd buy it back for. Quote was $29,000. That would pay off the Jeep and have some to put down so I went ahead and shipped the Murano to Warwick for $199. Rewind to 2 nights ago when I went to Carmax because the Murano got there. They appraised my Jeep and said I entered the wrong trim and I had a limited, not a limited x. The report they gave me says limited/limited x and the guy who sold me the jeep blantantly said it was a limited x. So, I just get off the phone with Carmax and the horrible manager in Warwick there told me I did not sit with a man and I sat with a woman. I told her at least 5 times that I sat with a woman named Krista to sign the papers, at no point did Krista specify limited or limited x and it was the man I sat with on June 2. She continued to say, "you sat with Krista." Like they can't pull up the sales rep who entered all the information to have the car shipped. If Carmax didn't make you speak with 8 different people to buy a car because as all of them told me, "we do not work on commission," so I never had 1 point of contact to go through when buying the Jeep. Also, to my surprise - she said all Experian auto reports for jeeps say limited/limited x. So this really all boils down to my word vs theirs, which is unfortunate because a large company like Carmax I really thought would make it right and they didn't. They placed the blame on me basically for believing their sales rep. At this point, Carmax proved to me that they either lie to their customers to get them to buy vehicles under false pretense or they literally just hire anyone off the street who have no idea what they are talking about. Either way I was told I purchased a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited X and I in fact do not have one. The manager really said to me well if you pulled your vin number you would have known it was not an x. By 8PM that same night, I had traveled to the store, gotten the inperson appraisal, gotten an offer that exactly matched the online tool, sold my car, and left with a check in my hand. Bought a car on Aug 5th And had it for 6 weeks. During that 6 weeks i was in possession of it for only 7 days. The AC didn't work and that repair took 2 weeks during which I had to contact the corporate office to get in writing that they pause the 30 Day money back guarantee because the local office wouldn't do it. Then the windshield was leaking and there was water damage and after 3 weeks I gave up. I went back in on Sept 21st and filed the return. After signing all the papers I was informed The corporate office would send me a check for my downpayment and refund of taxes and registration. 8 days later I still don't have my refund check. Thankfully at least the loan was paid on my account. Either way I would NOT recommend Carmax to anyone. The cars are over priced and they do not inspect them well Enough. Today, I have a terrible experience with Carmax' sale person who asked me a driver license, I provided that and than she asked me " Do have a car insurance with you ? " so that she can have it before she let me to have a test drive ! I was in shock ! What the hell ! We recently sold our 2019 MX5 Mazda Miata to Carmax, and the entire procedure was very pleasant, easy, professional, honest and fair. janet, who worked with us, was absolutely lovely and so knowledgeable and engaging! janet took photos of every inch of the car and found the entire history of the car, on line. My friend and i were stuck in rhode island for 4 days, 10 hours away from home. the day my car broke down i went to them for help because we have always had good experiences with them. the very first day i went to them with every intention to buy a car bc i HAD to and i was told they didnt have time for me which made me go to a store is Massachusetts about 25 minutes away. I found a car i liked but it had to be shipped to the warwick store since Massachusetts doesn't do temp tags. The communicate was great until my car got to the warwick store. 4 days later KNOWING my situation and about a 1k bill at our hilton they kept saying it had to be test driven and how they would do it the next day. The day my title came in the mail (since i was trading it in) i get a call saying since my mother co-signed my car they would have to see her sign it in person and not just mail it in. every person i spoke to told us a different thing. my mother was told that she could mail it in and it be accepted. the cherry on top that made me just give up on this car that i was dependent on was a call from Tom, the manager saying that lights were popping up and it had to be driven around until they went off- and it was a 50/50 shot of them not turning off. here i am waiting on a car for 4 days not even knowing if ill get it. The same day i got the call i went to honda and walked out with a car aswell as a trade in because they accepted my title. This carmax does not car about you. We saw that Carmax had a car we were interested in, called to confirm it was there and was told it was, but that all the scheduled appointments were taken. However, the rep told us he would have the car ready and that he would have us fit in. We drove up - a 35 min drive - and the car was not ready. In fact, they didn't know where it was other than in a general direction on the lot. We were told we'd be 4th on the wait list, but that the wait could be at least an hour. It was getting late, so we decided to make an appointment for a couple of days later. We arrived on time and gave our info to the sales rep and he took our licenses to scan. Took him 15 minutes to do that. He finally came back and asked for evidence of insurance which I said I didn't have on me but was in our car that we drove up in. The sales rep said not to bother. Then he provided my wife and I each with a contract to sign stating all the things we would not do during the test drive, like not violating the various rules of the road, not going off road and not taking the car for more than a 20 minute test drive, all of which I found unusual, but acceptable. However, the contract went on to have us indemnify Carmax for any injuries/damages to others and hold Carmax harmless from any injuries/damages to us that occurred during our test drive. While I've never seen anything like this, the really objectionable part is that it did not have any exceptions for injuries/damages caused by some defect with the car or negligence on the part of Carmax. For instance, if we were driving and the brakes failed, or if a tire blew out, we'd be fully responsible for all resulting injuries/damages and Carmax would have no responsibility, even if the accident was caused by their negligence. When I protested, the service manager came over to tell me that was not the intent of the contract, but couldn't change the language or let us do a test drive without us signing the contract as is. We thanked him for his time and left. I've been a corporate attorney longer than either the sales rep or service manager have been alive and I've written many indemnification and hold harmless provisions - no one should sign this one. Do your research! I help people buy cars. This place is overpriced. I helped someone buy a Renegade. This dealership had one and there was another for sale at Balise Subaru which is about a mile or two down the road. The Renegade at Balise was a year newer, a Limited model, had half as many miles, and was $1000 cheaper on the sticker. Unlike Carmax, you can negotiate price with other dealerships. Months later, I helped someone buy a Honda Civic. Same story. Inskip BMW had a better model, year newer, less miles, and about $1500 cheaper. In both these scenarios I was able to negotiate with Inskip and Balise to a price even lower than asking. As I said, do your research. Check other dealership as well and keep an eye on the options and packages. You'll save a lot more at other places. No, I am not a car salesman. While I didn't end up buying my car here, I am giving it 5 stars for the browsing experience. They pride themselves as a car dealership that does not haggle or pressure their customers into buying a car and they truly stand by that. My husband and I had gone to about 6 car dealerships in the past couple of weeks and this was by far the most easiest, stress-free experience we had at a dealership. When we arrived, we were told we can go and browse the lot ourselves and that all the car doors are unlocked where we can go inside any car and check it out if we want. How cool is that??? It was awesome being able to walk around without a salesperson following us around. Unfortunately, we didn't end up buying a car here as we ended up buying a new car. Went through a sponsored site the Edmunds to get my car appraised. The appraisal came back from Carmax. A few days later I stopped in at the dealership to verify the appraisal. I showed the gentleman working the front desk the email from them. He took my phone number and let me know there were 2 people ahead of me. I checked the TV were they list progress, it showed 4 in progress, 6 total. After 1 hour the man who came in in front of me was waited on by an employee who had been sitting on his computer for at least a half hour not helping anyone. I checked the progress board. It showed 3 names with 14 total waiting. The gentleman that was waited on gave him some information. The employee printed off some sheets, then left for the backroom. I left after 10 minutes with no one calling on me. They had my phone number and did not contact at all. If they don't want my car, Don give me an offer. If the wait is long let me know it will be over an hour instead of I am 3rd in line I went up the street to a different dealer. I had to wait for the appraiser to be free. He checked my car, made some phone calls and gave me a written appraisal. I was in an out in less than 20 minutes including my wait time. read more

I was super happy and I got lots of help from everyone that works there. Sadly, I've had the car for less than ONE month and I've had a total of THREE MAJOR issues with the car. First a leaky EVAP system, then a value was stuck open and needed to be replaced, and now my transmission control box failed and LEFT ME STRANDED in the middle of Mass on my way to work. We had one of the most disappointing and frustrating times when we got our car here earlier in the year. Both of which we've experienced elsewhere and wanted to avoid so we came to CarMax because of the wonderful promises on TV. What we did like: I thoroughly enjoyed being able to look at the available cars and reports online prior to even going. There were no surprises with the prices. Even test driving was great. What we didn't like: We had 3 different sales people who were all relatively new to the company and young and had no idea about simple processes and procedures. Everytime we set up an appointment someone else ended up helping us. This caused several unnecessary trips back and forth from home (45 mins each way) to sign more paperwork and get the car... Or like one of the times we drove all the way there to be told the car wouldn't be ready until the next day. A simple phone call to cancel our appointment would have been greatly appreciated!! Simple credit processing was dragged on and had to be entered several times because of errors putting the information in or giving us misinformation. The car we finally settled on we got transferred, and when we went to look at it the car had been scratched and dented which they fixed as much as possible. But still careless and frustrating. We will not be buying a car from here again. This was worse than some of the other sleazy places we've been to before. As far as the car goes, it's great, and paying off the loan has been easy enough as well. Just bad customer service, such a disappointment. CarMax did call me twice on the matter after posting my review and I did not return their call as this whole experience was so ridiculous and infuriating. As for the management here? Absolutely awful. I was contacted today by "management" around 3pm and he was the most condescending individual I've ever spoken to. I had an amazing experience buying my Corvette at CarMax. I had to have it shipped up to RI from Maryland. Cost was very reasonable at only $100. Once it arrived I was able to look it over in great detail and then test drive it all I wanted before driving back to CarMax. Once there, there was ZERO pressure to buy. More like talking about the car with a friend than with a sales person. The car was a "bucket list" item for me and it was perfect. I proceeded to trade in my '13 Camaro for the '15 Vette. Got decent money for the Camaro. Could I have gotten more someplace else, sure. But the entire experience was worth the cost. I also had piece of mind knowing the car was not beaten on since CarMax only takes in good condition cars, and if there are any issues, they resolve them. I opted for the 5 year warranty too. At only $1,500 it was a no brainer! Life of the loan the car is covered (or 75k miles). Arranged to buy Toyata Tacoma on 1/12/23. Made the deal, set up financing through CarMax and gave $5,000 deposit via debit card. Added the truck to my insurance and when we were ready to take possession, the manager said the loan application (which they prepared) was inadequate due to income verification. After some back and forth Carmax withdrew financing and we did not get the car. We asked for our $5,000 deposit to be put back onto the debit card - they refused and said we had to wait a week for a paper check to be delivered to our home. Four hours at the store, and lost $5,000 for a least a week. They took money under false pretenses. Stil waiting for verification of check delivery. read more

I wanted to pursue a certain vehicle and kept on it finally getting to responsive good salesman Drew. He did s great job. We now were very specific not to Fedex our new plates as they required a signature and we are seldom there, they agreed to just contact us and we would come get them. Let me begin by saying this is a totally different way to buy a new car. If you're done with the traditional car dealership BS go to CarMax. Absolutely no pressure or pushing you into a deal. The selection of vehicles is unlimited. I bought my 2014 Land Rover Evoque here yesterday and the experience was so fantastic. My salesman Richard was excellent. He understood the process and was quick and efficient. I highly recommend dealing with Richard. Great guy. They show you what you want and tell you the price. No back and forth for hours playing games. The price is the price. One suggestion...if you have access to alternate financing like "Capital One" or something similar bring a preauthorization with you. It made the difference in my case. We purchased a 5 year old truck on trade in. The trade in was fair it took 6.5 hours with one person it wasn't busy I don't know why so long. They did offer us dinner on them for our time and we were reimbursed. They noticed a scratch on the door so they sent out to body shop and gave us a loaner car it took approx. 2 weeks. We were asked to return loner with full tank of gas which we did, upon receipt of our truck the gas was on "E" I had no choice but to go to the nearest gas station needless to say I was not happy. I would have gone back but honestly I didn't have the time to go back and complain everything takes so long. I don't know what they all do there, except strut around. It's very impersonal and you never see the same person twice. Don't get me started on their call center; when you call the number it does not go the store to speak with someone it goes to a call center for all the stores and that in itself is a nightmare. Found the car I wanted in Connecticut, CarMax shipped for free (no obligation). My salesman, Bob C was very helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating. There was no pressure at all. Emma in Finance was very helpful also. Have been to other dealerships in the past, this was the most painless and quickest purchase process I have had. Recommend Bob C and CarMax. There is a 5 day return policy, which is great when purchasing a used car. I have plans to take this to my mechanic for a second opinion, within the 5 day window. read more

I had to sell my car because I was getting a company car from work. CarMax made the process so easy. It was a financed car so I still owed money. They paid off the bank and wrote me a check for the rest. They offered a very fair price and I agreed with the appraisal they did on the car. Every rep was professional, friendly & knowledgeable. Not impressed. I was impressed with my sales person and how smooth my first interaction had gone. Now I'm just plain angry. I went in there to speak to someone and have a car transferred from CT. I ended up noticing a different car in MA that was the same thing with more options. That was Saturday, it's now Thursday night and the car is still not there. I was told it could take up to 7 days because it was from a different state. Right, whatever. There is no reason that car should not have been in Cranston on Tuesday and ready for me by Wednesday afternoon at the latest. I could have driven a hour and a half and had the car for 5 days. The waiting game is getting old. Again, the sales person I was working with was excellent. He was clearly new, but still was honest and clear with everything. I'm still baffled that it takes so long for a car to be transferred from Danvers, MA to Cranston, RI. You may have lost a sale. Update 12/24: 2 emails and 1 text to my sales person and not a peep. It's 2pm on Christmas Eve and they are already closed?! This is getting old. If I don't have the car in hand on Monday, I will make sure to update my review and Carmax to the BBB. read more
