I appreciate that CarMax doesn't require any negotiation, with no pushy sales people or upselling. The price on the site is the price you pay. When you buy a car with them, they take care of title, license plate, and registration which is very convenient. We found the car we wanted and had it shipped from Florida. They indicated that it would be available for pick up in about a week, but it actually took more like a month to be ready due to emission testing. This was the only real negative with the process. They said they would refund the shipping fees, but we've yet to receive the payment. When we did go to pick up the car, it was a fairly smooth process. They let us test drive it on our own for about an hour. The paperwork took a bit of time, but it was mostly just waiting around for the agent to get all the documents ready and approved. When we were finished, they filled up the tank for us, and we were on our way. Only other complaint was our agent didn't do a good job of explaining how the MaxCare extended warranty worked, so we felt unclear on some of the details. read more

After visiting the CarMax in Florida, you see how the business model of these shops don't change much from location to location. After checking in, (I had to make a prior reservation) I was immediately greeted at the door when I told them I was interested to get a price on a car. I made my appointment at 11:00 AM (opening time) so the big rush had not come in yet. I was told that the process would take about 30 minutes to complete. sat down in their very spacious lounge area and five minutes brought me to Soni's desk and went through a complete online checklist. They have a huge car inventory too and it seems that many people there were in the process of purchasing a car. It is a very large location inside and out. This too was an amazing experience. It was also my second time coming to CarMax. The place is huge and they have a big friendly staff. It was really easy to get here and the entrance in and out were very accessible off Hempstead Tpke. My experience started off ok but ended horribly. First of all I had an appmnt that i arrived alittle early for. Just to have me wait 45 min to be called sit with a salesperson for an hour who was nice by the way. Sign all this paper work and initial, tell me congratulations just to then have his manager say that my license didn't show Floor 2 on it like my utility bill. I explained it's a private house so utility bills have to show which floor you live on so they know which meteor to look at but DMV never added apartment 2 which I always write down. So I was told the manager will have to speak to the higher up manager and they would call me first thing in the morning. Well of course I ended up calling, stayed on hold for the longest for a manager to get on the phone and RUDELY say we no longer will be doing business with you or any other carmax and we don't have to explain the reason. I was not rude at all but I felt I deserved a reason. But everything happens for a reason because they added their stupid warranty to my car note which made it extremely high. !!! BUYER BEWARE, DO NOT BUY FROM CARMAX EAST MEADOW !!! I recently got 2 vehicles shipped to this location from Out-Of-State (IL and MD respectively) and paid over $500 for the one from Illinois and $99 for the one from Maryland. When the vehicles arrived, I went to view them before I set up an appointment to test drive them and the condition was vastly different in person versus what was shown online in the pictures. One of the trucks had large rusty nails laying in the bed, large deep scratches almost all along the drivers side and pickup bed, the wheels were horribly damaged to the point where it would be embarrassing to drive, and one of the tires had a large amount of damage and really shoddy looking repairs done to it, which honestly made it seem unsafe to drive even though it passed their "Inspection". The other truck faired better, but it still had damage (scratches, dings, scrapes etc.) that I saw in person on the vehicle but not online when I originally looked and then paid to ship it here. When I called CarMax corporate, I was directed to deal with the East Meadow location first to see if they could help, which to me that was perfectly reasonable. So, when I called and spoke to management, we discussed getting a vehicle transfer refund, since I believe the vehicle was not fairly described/shown until AFTER I paid $500+ dollars. I was told I would receive a callback from the manager/management after they discussed the refund and I never got a callback. It was unfortunate, as I liked CarMax's dealership idea of not having to haggle, no fees etc. but this experience left a bad taste with me. Stay away and deal with Brand Name Dealers where at least they will call you back. read more

DON'T EVER BUY A CAR FROM CARMAX!!! In September of last year I bought a 2019 Chevy Traverse with MaxCare coverage. Within a month or two of me buying the vehicle the check engine light kept coming on. I took it to a number of places all recommended under the MaxCare plan and none of them could diagnose the problem. I recently took it to a place also recommended by MaxCare and they told me that I have significant damage to the under carriage of the car including the gas tank. The shop asked me if I had ever bottomed out the vehicle which I have not nor been in any other kind of wreck that would've caused this damage since owning the car and I also drive very conservatively. The bottom engine cover is missing as well and I know I didn't get on a rack and remove that. When I went to the insurance company assigned to me through MaxCare the claim was denied. I also contacted CarMax directly to give them the chance to do the right thing and cover the cost of the repairs to be done at the shop recommended by MaxCare as well as the cost of a rental car while the car is being worked on. I was told since it appears to be "impact damage" they will not be supplying me with any kind of help to cover the cost of the repairs. This damage definitely took place prior to me owning the vehicle and CarMax sold it to me in this condition. And because there's no way for me to prove that (which I'm sure is something these crooks were counting on), CarMax is telling me they're not going to assist me with any of the costs to get the repairs done. This is probably going to cost me about $4000 total and is going to put a major dent in my savings and CarMax has told me they're not going to assist with any of it. I realize I bought a used car but if I wanted to be ripped off I would've bought one for probably cheaper off of Facebook marketplace or at some shady side of the road dealership. Not from a company that I thought was legit and would have the car thoroughly inspected before I shell out the money for this major purchase. Buyer beware, DON'T GIVE YOUR MONEY TO THESE CROOKS! Wow I cannot express how much of a wonderful experience I had trading in my car and purchasing a new one!!! The experience was literally incredible!! After walking out of 4 different dealerships because of all of the hidden fees after almost ready to close the deal - I was almost in tears of how frustrating it was. But then my sister told me to try Carmax and there were absolutely zero hidden fees, I was able to get 90% the deal done virtually - and I went in to sign the final paperwork and was done in 20 minutes !!!! Be prepared to wait -- a lot. Even with an appointment, whether it's on a weekend or a weekday evening, expect to spend hours at this place. I purchased a vehicle here, and while the buying process was relatively easy and free of the typical sales games, the salesman pushed hard for a warranty I clearly didn't want. After purchasing the car, I drove off only to realize that several service lights were on -- including issues with the air system. Both key fobs needed battery replacements, and shortly after, the front brake pad service light came on. It became very obvious that they do not inspect their vehicles before selling them. It felt like they just ran it through a car wash, slapped on some plates, and handed me the keys. I seriously doubt they do the advertised 125-point inspection. After driving it for a few days, I felt uneasy about the condition of the car and decided to return it. That process was even worse. I waited for 2.5 hours only to be told to come back another day. When I returned (again with an appointment), I still waited another two hours. When I finally returned the car, the salesman insisted they keep the license plate, which was strange. When I contacted my insurance to cancel the policy, they informed me the plate had to be turned in to the DMV. I had to call CarMax again and make yet another trip just to retrieve the plate. While the managers were friendly, the place is clearly understaffed and disorganized. You'll see people just sitting around, looking frustrated. The whole experience was incredibly draining and far from what a car-buying experience should be. I'll never come back here, and I definitely do not recommend this location to anyone. read more

Highly recommend you make an appointment I arrived 30 mins before my appointment but they still assisted me and Blake Hastad was the Customer Specialist he was amazing and very professional. Easily would rate this establishment a 0. After completing the steps online for the car, we were informed to just pick up the car at 9 AM. We arrived at the CarMax at 8:50 just for the location to not be open until 11:00 AM. As soon as it was 10:59 AM we walked in to be told we could not be seen right away because we did not have an appointment, even though we were told to come in at 9. After an hour, someone was available to help us. The rep stated he would bring the car to us. He left us sitting at the desk for 39 minutes. When we saw the car outside, we decided to go out and saw him hanging out and laughing with his colleagues. We were able to view the car which did not compare to the listed photos. The car stated it needed additional service and the rep tried to cover seat damage with the paper. Upon talking to the rep regarding the damage and paper, he said there was nothing he could do besides ask for the oil change to be completed. So we decided we'll just take the car and utilize their 24 hour return if needed. After completing the credit run AGAIN, calling the insurance for the binder we were at this establishment for seven and a half hours to be told that "unfortunately we cannot find the title for this car so we cannot sell you this car but if you'd like to get dinner we can comp the bill for up to $100." I sold my used car here after a horrible experience trying to sell it to an 'authorized dealer' through the Kelley Blue Book (KBB) and CarFax websites. The 'authorized dealer' wouldn't honor the online sale price quote. This place, CarMax, was great. The exact price CarMax quoted me on their website, is the same price they bought the car from me. There was no haggling, no negotiating, and no pressure whatsoever. The only downside was the sale price was slightly lower. I think it was worth it to avoid hassle and aggravation from the other place I went to. CarFax and KBB said on their website I could sell it to their authorized dealer for $6500 (CarFax) and $6800 (KBB), and I tried one dealer (authorized from both websites) who didn't honor the online offers and instead offered me $4000. I left, and after that I gave up with KBB and CarFax. I didn't try another one of their authorized dealers. CarMax bought the same car for $6000. I was happy with them. I would recommend selling your car to them to avoid aggravation. read more

I went there to sell the car after getting a quote online. I was sensing a bad vibe at this location due to staffs attitude to the clientele. My uneasiness was sure enough confirmed when I got to speak with their agent Russo (Mr. Too-Cool-To-Talk) and his boss Rafael (Mr. Napoleon-Syndrome) Their system cannot print US addresses correctly (Not kidding). When i pointed out that my address is not correct in sales record, instead of accepting their systems limitation and reassuring, they were downright insulting and told me that they cannot fix it and am free to walk out the door. WTF? I found it very humiliating way I was spoken to and asked to speak to the branch manager right away. This place does not deserve even 1 star if it was not for the branch manager Zac who genuinely apologized for his staffs attitude and convinced me to stay and close the deal. Most people sell cars once in several years, do not expect any handholding from staff here. Instead you will get giggles and conscious talk under breath that make you feel inadequate and unwanted. Carmax was great. I did an online estimate to see what they would give me for my minivan. Estimate was great but obviously based on inspection of car. Made an appraisal appointment and dealt with Soni. She could not have been nicer. It was such a pleasant and quick experience. After inspection, they give you the actual offer which was the same as the online. I made an appointment in a few days with her to bring the van back and sell it. I had to wait about a half hour until she was free but I didn't mind. She took the plates off, we signed some paperwork and she game me a check. Simple and seamless. The facility is brand new and beautiful. I like to casualness of the employees. I made you feel like the weren't just out for a buck. Everyone was nice. Sold my car back in May of 2023 and to be honest the process wasn't bad and the sales people were helpful. Now comes the downgrade to 1 star. I just recently noticed that I was still being debited by my car loan company for the car I sold to CarMax. Called my bank and was told CarMax never paid them for the car so I was still on the hook. Attempted to contact CarMax to find out what was going on and after being transferred from one person to another (about 5 times), a rep told me they would look into this case and give me a call back in 24-48hours. Fast forward 72 hours later, once again tried calling CarMax but this time spent almost 1.5 hours getting thrown from one person to another and holding until I finally got fed up and demanded to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor finally got on the phone and informed me that they had a new accounting software installed and it caused many backups in payments. So my question to them was did you plan on informing me of this? Had I not been on autopay through my bank I would have easily missed payments assuming CarMax had already paid for the car. This would have severely damaged my credit. If you were lucky enough to go through the selling or buying process with no issues, congrats. For those who have to go through customer service for any issue, good luck. The company is unorganized and unprofessional, the lack of response and followup for something as egregious as not paying for a car that was sold to them for over 4 months is just unethical. To make matters worse, they are making it extremely difficult to refund me back the interest I had paid for the past 4 months. Just a word of advice to anyone who sold a car recently to CarMax. Check with your bank and make sure payments were made in full, otherwise you'll get a credit score drop and late fee charges. read more

This review is for vehicle sale only. I was very pleased with my experience. I was looking to sell my vehicle, not trade in, but without the hassle of private sell. I did CarMax online appraisal (as well as Kelly BBB, Edmunds, Carvana, etc.), and they were one of the highest offers. The place is pretty new and very clean. Efficient process to check in. Free coffee while you wait. I expected a bait and switch on my offer from the reasonable online appraised price, but it was what you see is what you get. No BS. I was told as long as I was truthful on the online appraisal, the offer was unlikely to change. The rep Andrew was very nice. He explained everything to me, inspected the vehicle, took photos, did a little test drive, and about 15-20 minutes later confirmed the original offer I had received online. It was all a very easy process. I was in and out in under an hour with check in hand. I had a truly dreadful experience at the CarMax location on east meadow on Hempstead trpk recently. I made a reservation well in advance for 12pm, thinking I'd be in and out smoothly. Little did I know, I was in for a nightmare. When I arrived, I watched in disbelief as the lady behind the counter Mariam repeatedly called customers who had arrived after me. I patiently waited for well over an hour, growing increasingly frustrated. Finally, when that same lady called my name, she had the audacity to say, "Oh, I am sorry, I forgot your name." The utter lack of courtesy and professionalism was shocking. This was a customer service horror show, and I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone. Car buyers beware, you might want to think twice before dealing with this CarMax location! Do not come here waste of time I waited almost close to 2 hours for the name to be called for the reservation that was suppose to be at 12pm which I came in around 11:30am.
