I have purchased vehicles from CarMax before, but this time was a little different. I used the service to move a car from another store that was a good distance from my home, to the closer store. It was free and couldn't have gone smoother. As soon as it arrived, I was contacted and was able to see the car, and purchase it, the same day! The only reason this isn't 5 stars is that we had to wait a very long time (over an hour) between when we signed the final paperwork and made our down payment and when we were finally able to get in our new car. I'll probably purchase from them again though. read more

In February 2020 I purchased a 2016 Toyota Highlander from the Kennesaw Car Max. Believing that the Inspection Report they provided was valid, I did not seek an additional mechanical inspection during the Warranty Period. After the Inspection Period, I discovered that the brakes were completely shot and that I needed new brake pads and new brake rotors at a cost of over $300. Anyone looking at the brakes after removing the wheels should have discovered this. It is preposterous that any mechanic ever looked at this car or looked at the brakes. All buyers from Car Max should be aware that any inspection information asserted by Car Max is worthless and that they should obtain their own inspection before purchasing any car. read more

I went in to sell a car that I had no interest in what the value or offer was. I was trying to sell on behalf on a family member across the country. Understandably there are a couple pieces of paperwork that were needed additionally which I had in tow. It took over 2.5 hours to appraise/settle up. My frustration is the amount of time their business office took to process this transaction. I could understand if I was shopping and possibly thinking of looking else where to sell, but my intentions were upfront and still took the better half of an afternoon to complete. read more

I can honestly say the salesman were GREAT however like another customer when it came to working w/the business office, my experience was less than pleasant. Anyway my vehicle did have a funky order and when they say we'll clean your vehicle up for you. It wasn't! It had mud stains in the carpet and coffee stain in the cupholder from the previous owner so of course non other than me I have to pay someone to clean the vehicle thoroughly! Also I thought Carmax vehicle were inspected throughlyI had to take my vehicle back for that funky odor and discovered it needed a new air filter which is probably what contributed to the FUNKY odor! I was told we'll put you in a loaner vehicle, no problem. Needless to say it wasn't a walk in the park! I missed my best friends Bridal fitting. Carmax is alright in my book. Although I'd never buy a car here due to their inflated prices I would still bring them a car I was thinking about trading in and see what they value it at. I took my old Highlander here to get appraised after going to a Toyota dealership and having them offer me $3k for it. Carmax offered me $5k for my car cash if I would sale it to them in the 7 days. I took the print out from Carmax back to the dealer which matched Carmax's value, saving me taxes since I was trading it into the dealer. read more

Very friendly and helpful while still making it very professional. He was very honest with me about the car (oxymoron, I know) and sat with me every step of the way. I recently purchased a car from CarMax on Earnest Barnett Pkwy. This is my first experience with CarMax but certainly not my last. My sales representative was Debbie Kelley. I have never had such a good car buying experience. I live in Texas and will be heading home soon so I took my car in for service because when I backed up and applied the brakes, there was a squeak. Forrest Beaman was my Service Coordinator and Tristian actually performed the work. What a great service team. Forrest was knowledgeable and assured me that the issue would be resolved and Tristian stayed late to make sure the work was completed. He lubed the rear brakes, cut the rear rotors and sanded the pads, balanced and rotated the tires and did a front end alignment - all because I had a squeak! We had some car problems and impulsively went to this location to buy a replacement. The sale was low pressure and low hassle, Ernst is a good guy. After a couple of days, though, we decided to go a different route, and took advantage of their buyer's-regret 5 day guarantee. I expected for the process to take hours and to be pressured into keeping the car, but it could not have been a simpler matter. Through the entire process we were treated with courtesy and respect. We have bought a few cars through CarMax and have never had a bad experience. In one case we purchased the extended warranty, which we ended up using a couple of times for expensive repairs, and again, I got no hassle when I was expecting a fight. Went outside and noticed 2 new chips in my paint. I went back in talked to the manager to tell them about it they said it's just not possible they did it and wouldn't even come out to look at it. ORIGINAL REVIEW - 2 STARS: I purchased my car at CarMax in Midlothian, VA and has a great experience with their sales and service departments. I figured I'd get the same stellar service at any CarMax. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case as I'm sitting at my home waiting for the tow truck... I called last week when I first noticed there was an issue with my Kia Optima. I knew the car was experiencing electrical issues and I was concerned that something like this was going to happen... They had nothing available till today at 9:30 so I booked the appointment. The person I spoke with last week just happened to be the same person who answered my call today. She has ZERO empathy for someone who works with people on a daily basis. I have the CarMax extended warranty and have never had to use it. When I tried to ask about how the warranty works, the lady was pretty rude last week and was just as rude today. Apparently, she even remembered speaking with me before as she made the comment 'like I told you before...' I had her on speaker phone and my husband could not believe what he was hearing from her! When the car you depend on every day stops working, you are already stressed and worried. Having a service rep that can empathize and sympathies with you can go a long way to ease your concerns. This lady was so uncaring, I'm sitting here in disbelief. Once I have her name I'll be sure to update my review. I'd be interested to see if this is the same person others have complained about. I also intend on speaking with the service manager once I get to CarMax Kennesaw. UPDATE - My car was towed to CarMax Kennesaw and I received a call from Forest letting me know it had arrived and they would look at it within the next hour. He advised me that he would call me back as soon as they had a diagnosis. Forest was very courteous and immediately made me feel like my car was in good hands. I received a second call from Forest about an hour later with a complete diagnosis of the issue and an accurate estimate of the repair cost as it was not covered under the warranty. I authorized the repair and informed him that I needed to have my car back by 3pm so I could pick up my daughter from preschool. He advised me that he would do the best he could to meet this request. Just before 2pm I received a third call from Forest letting me know my car was ready for pickup. I arrived at CarMax a little while later and was checked out and leaving in my car in under 10 minutes. Needless to say, I am very happy with the final outcome of my CarMax Kennesaw experience. Forest went out of his way to ensure my experience went from a negative to a positive and I appreciate it more than he will ever know. Being treated like a valued customer vs. an annoyance in someone's day goes a long way. :) This is why I have changed my review from 2 to 4 stars. I just bought a 2014 Jeep Compass at this location a couple of days ago. I was able to get a great interest rate considering my less than spectacular credit. My Salesperson, Harry D'Arcy, was wonderful!!! He was patient, helpful, very knowledgable, and responsive! He listened to what I needed for the deal to work and he worked hard to make it happen. I love Car Max's salespeople are not working for commission. I felt that Harry wasn't just trying to make a sale. I bought a car, then changed my mind and brought it back the next day. They have a 5 day return policy. Harry was just as patient, considerate, and helpful the 2nd time. Again he worked tirelessly to help me find a great car! Thursday afternoon, I try to start my car and it's dead again. I call you guys to get it looked at and instead of having me come in, you sent me to a local place that charged me $150 deductible and then insisted I needed a new battery with my brand new alternator and what do you know, that's not covered under the warranty so $190. I'm pretty sure they put an airplane battery in for $190. Regardless, I get it home, on Saturday because of course it took more than a day, park it in my driveway, get up to go to work Sunday morning...DEAD. So, the $1,000 that this mechanic is getting for an alternator and a new battery, was a complete waste. I won't even get into how they CLEARLY overcharged for both parts and labor. So. I requested a tow truck that said THREE HOURS. Waited 2 1/2 hours when they finally said they were on their way and then 20 minutes later, it showed cancelled because apparently, they couldn't get ahold of ya'll. ABS Automotive. So, your call center agent gets another tow company that says 90 minutes and here I am 2 hours later and still no tow. just got off the phone with them and they claim they don't have a work order for my car. So, it's now 8pm, I have been trying to get someone to come and get this pos car, to get it back to the pos mechanic you sent me to, and I've been literally stranded since Thursday the 10th. This is all because you sent me to a mechanic near me to fix the problem and they didn't fix it properly. I've been without a vehicle since THURSDAY the 10th and ( I am currently updating this on the 22nd). I have missed THREE days of work. I am absolutely disgusted by this entire process. I honestly don't even know what to do right now and ya'll are refusing to HELP ME!!!! Update: now day 11. Got it home again for the second time from Alpha Automotive in Dallas, GA and it is ONCE AGAIN not starting. Spoke to a manager in the business department at your Kennesaw location who had no clue what to even say to me so she appeased me by saying she would send the service department an email to let them know it's being towed in, which, by the way, the service secretary said she never received. Update: day 12. I got it towed into CarMax in Kennesaw. I spoke to a woman who blatantly lied about being the service manager when in reality, she is only a secretary, Mya. She was extremely rude and dismissive. She basically told me that it was going to be a "few weeks" before they could even look at it for a diagnostic and that they don't do loaner cars. So, basically, they are refusing to FIX MY CAR EVEN THOUGH ITS UNDER WARRANTY. They literally don't give a crap about me or about this car. I told them I was going to have to come get my stuff and let them keep the car and he (Ryan, the actual service "manager") literally said, "you handle it however you need to." He said I needed an "appointment" to get my car looked at and I'm so boggled because HOW do you schedule an appointment for a car not working? "Hey Ryan, my car is going to break down sometime next week so can I make an appointment?" Um, what?? I have NEVER experienced anything like this and my next step will be contacting the media and getting a lawyer and going to small claims court because not only am I completely stranded, I am MISSING WORK and you people are refusing to help me even though it's COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY!!!! You sold me a car under fraudulent terms, claiming it was under warranty and now you're refusing to fix it or even help me get it fixed....I have come out of pocket $350 for a battery that the car didn't even need, and I am losing wages because of this. This was my first time shopping for a car, and I must admit that I was nervous from the car dealer horror stories my friends have told. Thankfully, I had a great time buying a car at Carmax near Kennesaw. The attendants were very friendly and helpful with any questions I had regarding the buying process, regarding loans, payment, contract, maintenance, fees, taxes and the like. The whole process was transparent, fast, and easy. I would say that the agent I worked with did not seem to know much about the car I was interested in... I would give this CarMax 0 Stars if I could. I bought a Honda Civic from them about 2 months ago. My wife went to go do a routine oil change, while the technicians were doing the oil change, they did a routine inspection of the air filters. The air filter was filthy, and the filter to the air conditioning system had rat poison in it. When we brought the car up to CarMax they did absolutely nothing about it, and just said those things get looked over sometimes. Will change the filters out. The technician who spoke with my wife was extremely disrespectful. I will never give them any of my business ever again. For all of you in search of a car, avoid CarMax. If you do decide to go with CarMax, make sure you have them check the air filters in front of you to make sure there is not any rat poison in the filters. read more

I'm updating my initial positive review of the sales process. Found out a week after getting car home that 2 and almost 3 of the tires were bald. Then they never completed the paperwork to get the title sent to me from the store where my car was transferred. That meant having to go to DMV twice to renew temp plates and many hours on the phone to get answers. Very frustrating and disappointing experience. Twenty (20) weeks ago yesterday I bought a 2019 Dodge Caravan at CarMax in Kennesaw, GA. We still don't have a title for the car. Have gotten nowhere with the store or corporate. I don't believe anybody at CarMax understands or takes seriously (or cares about) the predicament this places us in. If we were to experience a total loss in the new vehicle, we could not settle a claim and replace the car until we have the title which I have been advised could take another two months. My only two requests of CarMax were beyond reasonable, I asked that CarMax (a) assure me that the car they sold me had a clean title and (b) that in the unlikely event we experienced a total loss in the vehicle before they perfected the title, CarMax would assure us a loaner vehicle until they produced the title so I could settle a claim and replace the vehicle. CarMax has refused to do either, displaying that they would not agree to the very basic of basics when it came to doing the right thing. I understand the refusal to guarantee me that they sold me a car with a clean title, as it is now obvious given that they have had to go back to the original owner for supporting documentation that the title to the car was neither clean nor unencumbered. I've never said, thought or believed that CarMax intentionally sold me a car without a clean title; I'm confident that it was a clerical error and that they will eventually get it corrected. However, refusing to provide us basic assurance and protection that would be of zero cost to CarMax is startling, disappointing, and downright frightening. I will never buy a car from CarMax again and I would encourage anybody reading this to give serious consideration to looking for a more reputable dealership when they are ready to buy a car. It appears that when it comes to ethics and integratory as well as a willingness to just do what is right, CarMax isn't ready for prime time. Then you might wait and wait. They --really-- should hand off a (in my case cash) customer to another salesperson when this happens. I am a previous employee of CarMax. When first starting at CarMax, you are given the appearance that everyone works together and is happy. You soon later find out that many complain, there is a ranking hierarchy, and many people are unhappy with management and the way things are run. I was fortunate enough to have support from my managers in my department, but I have heard otherwise from others. There is a notable ranking system in which you are noticeably treated less than if you are at a lower level. Everyone gives off the notion that we work together to help everyone succeed, but this is sadly not the case. The work is unfairly distributed among associates, and the managers are rarely there to see it. For the most part, things are organized and concise, and there are many one-on-one meetings to ensure that you are happy and satisfied with your environment. This falsely gives the illusion that you are heard and looked after. Oftentimes, constructive criticism is encouraged, but action is rarely ever taken. You will be reminded many times that there are many growth opportunities within CarMax, but there are certain restrictions that make it nearly impossible to move up from where you are. You are constantly spoon-fed false promises of improvement and raises that are never fulfilled. I was very satisfied with working at CarMax until I began to read between the lines and see that it was more of a dead-end job where it matters more if you are liked than your actual work ethic. The wrong people are praised for their work while you could be busting your ass just to be criticized and ridiculed. If you make one wrong mistake, it is held over you for the rest of your career there, with no leverage or understanding. I am sad to say this because there are quite a few good people there who are memorable and stood out to me, but these memories are almost tainted by those who made it an unpleasant experience. It became more of a dread and a drag to get up and go to CarMax every day. Being fired from CarMax was a blessing in disguise. I was constantly told that I will not find a better-paying job with better benefits in a pitiful effort to get me to stay, but they were horribly mistaken. For months and months, I had to sit back and watch people sit on their asses while I took on most of the workload only to be judged and ridiculed by certain associates who "didn't like" me with absolutely no recognition or praise. CarMax is a joke, and I am sorry to anyone who has been stuck there. If I could give one bit of advice, other than to not apply, it's that once you associate with the higher-ups it is nearly imperative that you suck up to even be acknowledged. read more

Two cars we were interested in magically increased in price, one by $3k and the other $4k, between the time we contacted them for an appointment and the time we showed up for our appointment. I've purchased 5 cars from Carmax in the past 7 years; just recently I was assisting my son in purchasing and he opted to use the Kennesaw location vs the Roswell location which I only use. Much to the reason why I never choose to use Kennesaw he discovered why that is. Upon arrival he is greater & states his purpose only to be advised yeah the cars are out those doors..Wow really.. So fast forward to the purchase, new associate not shadowed by anyone, why historically was a 20-30 minute process becomes just over an hour. In the end my son choose to enact his 5 day option and returned the car. He did use Carmax for the next car, but had it shipped to Roswell where Customer Service has continued to be delivered at the highest level. In the end Carmax offers consumers great options, but it's the Management that sets to tone for the Please or unpleasant experience. For Kennesaw the GM needs to re understand the WHY that makes Carmax what they are, as his team has clearly forgotten as well. read more

I purchased a car in January return the car three times for a tire maintenance A light. The first time I was told oh it was just the pressure of the tire that was off. The second time I was told to schedule an appointment and that appointment was in two weeks. On the third I took the car in and picked it up after work. I was given paperwork saying that there was no problem. On the way home I got the maintenance light again. I started to look closer at the warning light that was on and looked at the tire pressure and the tire pressure was different on all four tires. I called back explained everything and I was told that my service person did not tell the mechanic to check the tire pressure to check the brakes. I did tell the service person that the brakes were grinding the second time that's why I scheduled a third time appointment the mechanic to check the brakes and tires. In addition to this the tire maintenance light was also on. I do not believe my car was checked properly. After calling the service person I was given all these reasons instead of hearing well let's just check your tires. I spoke to three different locations. One was Kennesaw the second was Norcross and the third was a Kansas location. No one tried to do anything with checking out the tires. I do not recommend Carmax service department. The service the explanations and the work is very unsatisfactory. I felt like I was just being told something to be rotated in and out to show paperwork that something was done but nothing really was done. I strongly suggest buyers beware. Even though I'm within the four month warranty of Carmax I was told to take my car to a shop and have them check the tires and I will not be charged. I am not been to a tire shop and have them check someone else's work without paying a fee. read more

Not a good experience. I was looking to suprise my wife for Christmas and did a lot of research and shopping on-line. Narrowed down my choices and went to several places including the Kennesaw CarMax. Terrible experience. First, I am in medical sales. People buy from people they like, pretty simple. Well lets just say they should have Bob's picture under "used car salesman" in the dictionary. He was a condescending, arrogant, jerk that couldn't even remember my name. He was late for our appointment, and then had me confused with a different customer. I used my credit union for financing and this seemed to irritate him. When I declined the extended service, he was really irritated (they must be compensated nicely on extended service becuase they push it hard). He went into some story about how he had to send his watch in for service and it was going to cost almost as much as the initial purchase to have his watch repaired. I think he was trying to use that as an example of why I should purchase the extended service. Whatever dude. This is the best part, so I left and told him I had some other appointments. Bob tried to scare me by saying he can't promise the car will still be here. How frightening! After I had visited other dealerships, a couple of days later I called Bob on his cell phone and told him I was ready to purchase the vehicle. He told me he was on his way to the lot and he would check to see if the car was still there and would call me back. When he called me back, his exact words were. "you're lucky, the cars still here". WHAT?????? I'm lucky????? My reply without skipping a beat, "no you're lucky, because I'm going to buy it". What a jerk!!!! But it's not over. He did not ask me what's a good time for me to meet (as any salesman worth his salt would do), he started telling me his schedule and when he would be available to see me. What a joke. Finally, I asked if after the paperwork was complete would they hold the car unitl Christmas Eve. I'm trading in my wife's car without her knowledge so this process is a little tricky. Bob got irritated again and said, "no, absolutely not, we can't hold assets". What? Every other dealer I spoke with had no problem whatsoever with this scenario. Bob did not even ask his supervisor, just an emphatic "no". Well that was the end of that. It's experiences like this that give car salesman a bad name and is why people cringe at the thought of walking onto a car lot. This Carmax might not be bad, but Bob is. read more

I would only recommend dealing w this carmax if you enjoy the following 1: being lied to 2: being talked down to 3: listening to a receptionist pop her gums at you 4: getting terrible service 5: having to deal with all the idiotic employees time and time again because they cut corners and can never do anything right period To put my entire experience into perspective in advance, I hope their fucking building burns down for the way they treated me. Terrible, horrible, worst carmax/car dealer ever! I cannot say enough awful things about this place!! The sales person made several empty promises just to sell the car like the 6 months of satellite radio, fixing everything wrong w the car, buffing the headlights etc. He deliberately made an appt for service outside the return timeframe and said the timeframe would be extended to make sure I was satisfied w the service but it wasn't. They made me buy the tires to replace the ones that were damaged and unsafe on the car plus didn't even tell me there was a recall that hadn't been serviced! A few months after they supposedly fixed my car it broke down while I was out of state on vacation. The carmax there was very nice & offered to fix it that day for free but I had to get home so they fixed it enough to get back to atlanta. This terrible awful carmax however made me wait 2 weeks after returning home for an appt, refused to give me a loaner car in the meantime and made me bring the car up there for over 2 hours in the middle of my workday! Then 2 more weeks later when the part gets there they call to set up another appt this time they tell me on advance it'll take a few hours (they continue to claim they never give a loaner to anyone) and the only times they EVER do appts is 9am - 2pm. Who except housewives can make a ridiculous appt time like that when they're only open Monday to Friday?! I am absolutely furious at the lack of empathy from everyone on the staff - especially the receptionist in the service dept who pops her damn gums when you ask if they have anything later than 2pm or earlier than 9am! When I tried to speak w the service mngr to reason w him to give me a loaner since I only work 5 miles away he said I could take a cab and stared blankly like he didn't understand why that was unacceptable. This is the 4th car I have bought at carmax and the first experience I have had w this particular location. Due to the awful experience here in atlanta I will absolutely never have dealings with any carmax ever again and will be refinancing my car so it won't be with their financing anymore! The service manager at this location is the only reason this place didn't get one star. He was a great guy and promptly helped me with an issue I had. That's the only positive thing I can say about this Carmax location. I initially visited in June with a list of 7 vehicles I wanted to look at. I was helped by John (I believe he is who another reviewer lists as "Jay B" because he is older and has a difficult last name that starts with B) and he seemed really nice up until the point he realized he wasn't going to make a sale. He showed me all the vehicles on my list and I test drove two of them and decided to purchase one of them. Right before doing the paperwork, I told John I wanted to do a once over of the lot to make sure I wasn't passing up another car that I may like better. While walking the lot, I texted a friend about the car I decided to purchase and was told what bad reviews that make/model showed online. I had looked up professional reviews, but didn't think to look at owner reviews. I returned inside and told John that I wanted to go to lunch and do some thinking on it and would return afterwards with a final decision. He suddenly changed his tune and became very pushy and somewhat rude, saying I should just go ahead and purchase the vehicle and could always return it if I changed my mind. He even had a sales manager come over and encourage me to do the same even though I kept repeating that I wanted to do a bit more research on the car and would definitely come right back after a lunch break (we had been there almost 4 hours by this point). I decided not to purchase that vehicle after reading the reviews and called John on his cell (like he instructed me to do) and explained why. He was again very short and somewhat rude, but I told him I would contact him if I ended up seeing something else on their site that I liked. Couple weeks later, I did just that. I found a vehicle at the Southlake location in Stockbridge that I wanted to look at. I was unaware that vehicles can be transferred between locations for just a test drive, so I drove to the Southlake location to see the vehicle. Before going in, I called John (who, btw, never even once contacted me to follow up on whether or not I found anything else) to ask what I should do if I wanted to purchase the car. He told me not to tell the salesperson at Southlake that I liked the vehicle, and to call him back as soon as I left and he would set up the transport to Kennesaw so I could purchase it from him. I felt obligated to make the purchase from him since he had spent so long showing me vehicles in Kennesaw, but was really turned off when he essentially instructed me to lie to the Southlake salesperson. He even said "Ya know, because if you buy it there, I don't get any commission." I was shocked that he was that unprofessional and tacky. Come to find out, in this type of situation, salespeople are required to split the commission if multiple people at different locations have helped the customer with their transaction, to include vehicle appraisals. Of course John would know that as an employee, and the fact that he wanted me to be shady and lie just disgusts me. On another note, the receptionist who answers the service line at this location (like another reviewer has stated) is very rude and doesn't even try to assist you or give you any helpful guidance.
