Been to the Kenosha CarMax twice. Nolan, can't call him a salesman, help with the purchase of a car, Nolan far exceeded my expectation, he was knowledgeable about the make and model of the car. Hard to do with all the different vehicles on the lot. At no point was there any pressure to finance or purchase an extended warranty. This review revolves mostly around our experience with Ed. We stopped in here when we were in the area visiting family and just wanted to test drive a car we were considering buying either from Carmax or Carvana. We didn't have an appointment but Ed was able to have us in and out of there in 40 minutes from when we sat down to test driving the car to answering questions on the warranty on our way out. Unfortunately the car smelled like smoke so we knew it was not the one and appreciated that Ed respected that and didn't push the matter. When we told him we were from Chicago, he gave us some recommendations on monitoring their nationwide inventory, gave us his card and told us to call anytime but that local dealerships would be also be able to take care of us. Over the next few weeks we stopped in two more locations and one guy was perfectly nice but the third guy tried to push us on buying a car after we test drove it and told him we could feel the car idling throughout the entire ride. We told him firmly it was for us then left. Fast forward to the weekend, we ended up going w Carmax bc of the warranty and we decided to get a V6 sports model and found one in NC, so we called up Ed and he took care of everything in 30 min. Went in for a quote on possibly selling my car. This part was great and the staff I worked with great. Figured good service so let me continue to walk and check out cars on the lot. This is where my device went downhill. Staff assistance was non existent. Staffers literally passed us and offered no assistance. I went to look at a vehicle I was interested in, but I was unable to even get on the lot to browse without surrendering a ton of information. Standing by the front door, I called and spoke to a sales person, Jake, who kept me on the phone for over five minutes before I gave up. Even though I have bought a handful of cars from this location, and he was able to pull my account, he still wanted my middle initial, birthdate, etc. It seemed excessive for the "privilege" of walking their lot. As stated, I've bought two new Toyotas and at least two pre-owned vehicles from them, but they have ruined what was a consistently easy and pleasant purchasing experience. read more

If you're considering purchasing a car don't buy it from Carmax, especially this one. I recently purchased a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan that was patched up and resold. Shortly after my purchase I began noticing several issues: driver side visor dangles on for dear life because whoever patched it up did a horrible job, the push gas tank doesn't open, at all, so I was unable to get gas, and several scrapes/scratches were revealed after washing the car. When calling the service desk the customer service rep said there was nothing they could do because it was outside of their 30 day return policy, I wouldn't recommend these sleazy car salesmen to anyone. read more

Although we did not buy from CarMax, I wanted to write something about the excellent, caring, way they treated my 20 yr old grandchild on her first car buying experience. We met with Abraham who was a knowledgeable and helpful salesman. She found the car she really wanted but the price was a bit over the loan she had already received from her bank. She has no credit at all so although we allowed him to run her credit to check for a loan that might cover the cost, the interest rates were too much for her. I was so impressed by the no pressure tactics and the sincerity of Abraham that I think I will be back when I am ready to buy my next car! When i bought my 2014 jeep, it was sent from janesville branch up to waukesha WI. Paul in Janesville sent me up with all this talk about what needed fixing, cost etc... when i bought the vehicle nothing was repaired, they didnt bring price down and then the nigjtmare really began. The jeep kept making sounds, then was locking me in vehicle, excellerating on its own, brakes stopped functioning. I took it back so many times only to be treated poorly by service dept. Mary. The electrical system was so bad my grandson and i had several close calls. 3 times locked in, always telling me to start engine push button and still wouldn't start, kept us locked in, sounding the alarm.. the transmission would kick down into a low gear on hwy. They always had an excuse to blame me until a flatbed had to come to my and my grandsons rescue. It was without a doubt the worst transaction in buying a car i ever had!!! I took the vehicle back for the LAST time after about 1-2 months dealing with Carmax"s Poor service selling me a flood vehicle...They refunded my money although never paid for my terror, my time or severe inconvenience. . Pssst! I'll let you in on a little secret. I've never sold a car before. What? you might be saying? How is that possible? It's possible as most of my previous cars were either company cars which I just turned in when it was time, or they were cars that were well worn and just given to nieces or nephews when they needed a car. But this one came back to me. So I find myself with my old friend; my first Mercedes which I drove for about 6 years and then gave to a family member to use. Now this old gal is about 14 years old and the last thing I need is another car. So it's off to CARMAX to sell my baby. First- their phone app works great. I scheduled an appointment and within 20 minutes, Paul, the sales rep was calling me, getting a little more info on the car and confirming my appointment. When I pulled up and walked in, Paul was right there, waiting for me, explaining the process in great detail, and then walking me to the lounge where I could munch on freshly popped popcorn, sip a coffee or hot chocolate or just relax. While he told me it might take up to 45 minutes, I had barely found a chair when they were back to me. They went through the entire appraisal process, telling how my car checked out (everything perfect, yay!) and then telling me what they would offer. If you say you want to think about it- you have 7 days to make up your mind. In my case, my answer was yes, so I moved to the next step in the process which was the title transfer. Mary and Louise in this office were great, not only helping me with this auto but giving me some advice with another car I have that needs it's title transferred from WI to IL (see, I've got way too many cars!) They had me sign a couple of forms, handed me a check and I was on my way! Super simple, organized and above all, the friendliest people I have had the pleasure to work with in a long time. In fact, there was a line up of staff waiting for customers when I left and they each said good bye and thanks! Before I left, I went into the garage to say goodbye to my baby. After all, she had been with me for a long, long time. Her little headlamps seemed to follow me as I walked away. But I know she will be fine. She's with the friendly CARMAX people and that eased my guilt of leaving her. Thanks CARMAX! read more

I test drove cars at two different Carmax locations yesterday and had very different experiences, hence the 3 star review. The first was in Oak Lawn, IL and I worked with sales agent, Brett. He was a complete delight. Very professional and polite. Oak Lawn deserves 5 starts! Even though that location was very busy with customers, and I walked in without an appointment, I waited only 10 minutes before being helped. He showed me the features of both vehicles and handed the keys to me for a solo test drive. I also drove up to the Carmax in Kenosha, WI. Again, I had no appointment. Although there seemed to be employees in every corner of the vast, fairly empty showroom, I waited for over 40 minutes before being helped. The car ended up having a yellow/orange leather interior (not the black interior, that I had confirmed upon arrival). I would rank Kenosha at 1 star. I was surprised and disappointed in the difference in atmospheres. Carmax has very nice vehicles and the no haggle experience is great but I won't be going back to the Kenosha location. read more

My wife made an appointment online to test drive a vehicle, a few minutes later she had received a phone call confirming the appointment for 1pm. We drove from Milwaukee to Kenosha and arrived at 12:50pm. We waited until 1:20pm before leaving, horrible customer service when your salesman cannot even keep an appointment. We were ready to buy and all ready secured financing through our credit union. I came here in search of a NEW car. Yes, they sell new cars but their new car inventories are limited to a handful of Carmax locations around the country. In the Chicago area, only this Carmax in Kenosha sells new cars, and the brands it carries are Chevrolet, Toyota and Scion. They are just across the state line and visible from the highway. All cars are stickered with a no-haggle price that's about 10% off of list. I test drove a car, had my car appraised and was pre approved for financing. But I did not buy a car from them. I went with a local dealer in Chicago because the dealer found me a new prior year model at a substantial savings. My review is not really towards Carmax but the sales associate that helped us at this specific location. I bought a car through CarMax before which was our reason for going back, because it wa a pleasant experience the first time. With that said, we stopped in Monday. The women who checked us in was very pleasant (did not get her name). But as soon as our "assigned" associate greeted us, he made it pretty clear that we were wasting his time. We told him we were not going to be buying until December because that was when my boyfriend will be retiring from the Army, and that was when we would be able to make the purchase. We explained we were at the beginning of the process and doing research on different makes and models, and trying get a feel how certain cars drove, as MOST people do when they go searching for a new car. He made comments several times about how none of the cars they have now will be there when we came back. As if we didn't already know this, that completely defeats the point of why we were there which was to get information on other cars, but apparently unless you want to buy a car right then and there, don't bother. Well since we could tell he was annoyed and continued to make it clear we were wasting his time, that's exactly what we did, continued to waste his time, intentionally and kept asking to test drive other cars. He kept making comments, was playing around with his phone, and as we were walking out (in front of us in a hurried mannor to get rid of us) said "Here is my card, I won't be here but someone else will be". It was beyond rude! I don't care how old or young you are, customer service is KEY to deciding who to buy a car from. He was by far the WORST salesman I had ever dealt with! I would be happy to provide his name, however, since he took our name/address in order to test drive cars, I fear he might retaliate due to negative feedback! Anyone that has bought a car knows what a stressful, frustrating process it is, and starts with research on what cars they want to look at, and ALL sales associates, regardless of the timeframe for the buyer, should be willing to take the time to work with you. If he had a different attitude towards us, I might have continued to work with him and made sure to give him the business when the time came, even if he had left and gone to a different dealer. But clearly he doesn't have the patience or dedication to his customers to understand realize that! read more

The exact same car I had intended to buy at Northside down to the color. The price? My sales rep was so terrific the last time that I specifically requested her again. After going to other dealerships in the greater Kenosha, Racine, and Milwaukee area and being treated like the "little woman", this experience was totally different. My time was valuable and my questions were completely answered with no hard sell. I do my research. I know what I'm looking for in a car and what I don't want. I used both my computer and the CarMax ap for my phone. CarMax reserved the cars I found desirable, and transferred when out of the Kenosha dealership. My appointments were on time and the cars were waiting for me to test drive. I did end up purchasing a used vehicle this last time and found a couple of things wrong after driving for 100 miles. Used the "Edmunds Instant Cash Offer," to appraise my car's estimated sell price. (https://www.edmunds.com/sell-car/). After entering in my car details, I received a printable certificate for the appraised value, which was in line with research that I had previously done. The certificate was for the CarMax in Kenosha, WI location; along with a request for an appraisal appointment, including the salesman's name with whom I would meet. Additionally, I was informed of the necessary documents to bring if a sale was to take place. Note: The CarMax site states the process takes about 30 minutes upon arrival, though it took closer to 2 hrs once I left with a bank draft in hand. Everyone I encountered was both courteous and professional; nearly everyone wore masks, and social distancing was observed. After some initial information was gathered, an appraiser performed a visual inspection of the car, and took it for a test drive. The next step was for their "buyer" to review the appraisers review, and present a purchase offer. The process was explained succinctly, and at no time was I pressured to make a decision on the spot. I was a little apprehensive about what price the dealership was going to offer, expecting a typical dealership haggling session on price. But, since I was honest and realistic about the condition of the car (when entering the data on the Edmunds site) I wasn't expecting too big of a discrepancy between the amount on the certificate and the offer. I also had a "walk away" amount in mind, so that if their offer was too low, I could simply thank them and be on my way. The sales person explained how they would arrive at the offered amount, (like how a tax preparer walks you through your filing before telling you how much you owe the government). After several minutes, the computer displayed that my offer was ready. The offer, was exactly the Edmunds Certificate price... with which I was pleased. I waited another 20 minutes to get the "bank draft," (for deposit only), and was on my way home. Note: I'm not sure if the process would have been different had I not brought the Edmunds certificate, but I'm glad I did. read more

Inconveniently located on the frontage road west of I94 in Kenosha County: what was I thinking buying a car from them, especially after my first experience in 2008 when the salesman acted like I should come back with my husband (I would have to get married first.). The salesmen could have cared less in 2017 either and the service department is the worst. The service area is closed from 12-1 as all the employees take lunch at the same time. Their website says "Helpful expertise whenever you need it" except apparently on your lunch hour 10 miles away.
