It's as easy as a car-buying experience can be. My old one died over Thanksgiving, so I got on their website and found pretty much exactly what I was looking for. The one I wanted was at the Winston-Salem location, so they transferred it to Raleigh for free within 24 hours. I was able to apply for and get financing online (at a rate I was pleased with), so when I got to the lot, it was really just about test-driving the new car, evaluating the old for trade-in, and signing a bajillion pieces of paper. The whole process took less than two hours. Everyone who helped me was super-friendly and it seems like they really care about their customers' impressions. They have a 30-day full-satisfaction window when you can bring the car back in to address any problems. The sales guy told me to be strict about the car during that 30 days and to bring it back for anything I wasn't completely happy with. I wasn't quite ready to be buying a new car and it was a stressful week, so having them be so helpful made things a lot easier for me. read more

Don't make the mistake of shopping here. We thought we could avoid the decpetive trickery of the used car business by shopping here. That was wrong. It is true that they inspect their vehicles, but their safety standards are so low as to be meaningless. Expect major repairs shortly after purchase unless you're prepared to get under the car and start measuring the brakes and testing the struts. What you'll get is a lot of delays and doubletalk - (Nick in service went on and on about transparency). But you do get a ribbon around your new vehicle. Unfortunately, when you look at the picture of you and your beribboned car in 2 months, you'll feel like a chump. read more

Tired of driving all the way there to wait over an hour to be told they have once again ordered the wrong part. Nothing like wasting half a day on multiple occasions to drive 40mins there to wait hours then be told oh sorry we ordered the wrong part again like we don't have 100 of the same car in the lot to check before we waste your time. I do not recommend this place. They sold me a car that fell apart the second day of having it and now months later I still can't get a part replaced that I personally have to spend money to re-attach because they decided to remove my adhesive holding the part together even though the part they ordered was incorrect. I'm furious and would return this vehicle is I could. NEVER using carmax again. read more

I reserved the car on their website. I went there and met with the sales girl. Everything was going fine until I went out with her and made a list of all the cleaning I wanted done, as the car was in sub-par cosmetic shape and still on the lot. The girl lied and didn't provide the full list. This resulted in three hours of phone tag with service and the sales girl. Service didn't take me seriously until I informed them the sale would be cancelled. The sales girl had to go in and gave them the list but it was still incomplete. It seems she did it from memory. My family and I had to call the sales girl as service claimed they didn't have her number nor did they bother to get it. The service manager was the most helpful, which isn't saying much. He claimed to be a stickler for detail yet missed soda stains on the ceiling of the car. I'm going to clean them myself. I would never buy a car from that location ever again. And I would not want to purchase any cars from this company again. This experience really ruined it as my other car was bought from Carmax in FL. read more

Terrible service. Do not BUY anything from here. I purchased a van 3 weeks ago and the wrong county was put for the property tax assessment although I clearly check WAKE county. They know their system gets this wrong and still have not fixed it. Then they ask you to go to the DMV yourself. You are on your own. Good Luck. You will need it. read more

We originally went to a different location first for a specific type of vehicle they didn't have that specific vehicle in stock so they sent us to this location , as if everything was going to be ready when we got here , we understood things would be a little slow due to Covid however we've been here since 12pm it is now 6pm and all we had to do was come pick up and purchase the vehicle . We've been given the run around for HOURS . The associate who was assisting us took lunch in the middle of our process . Came to carmax Glenwood Ave Sunday June 10 asked to test drive a vehicle, the salesman outside says let me see if it's available give me a couple minutes. 96 degrees 12 minutes later, I go inside to see him looking at a pc. I asked what the hold up was he says it's not available. Did he think to come tell us and have us come inside, no. I go to get water, come out he's gone. I figure he's back outside. I go to meet wife he's not there, he move away from where I saw him near the door near the lot on pc, to another desk in the back corner of building Came in to buy 2 vehicles for Wife and College student but my $ is worth better customer service. I recently moved to the area about 5 months ago and purchased my first car at CarMax! It was such a smooth and easy process...until something goes wrong, of course. As I went to leave for work the other day, my 2015 Jeep Cherokee wouldn't start. The lights, radio, accessories, etc. all functioned, but the engine would not turnover. Confused, I called MaxCare Roadside Assistance and they sent someone out to jump me. The parking brake was stuck for a while, however, after the jump start, I was able to release it. The guy who jumped my car told me it was safe to drive from Raleigh to RTP, but I had the opposite gut feeling. The dashboard still showed the light on, as well as a few others, and the acceleration was tight. I drove straight to CarMax on Glenwood, without an appointment, and explained my issue. They agreed to take a look at it. (I thought it would be as simple as to run codes and reset) I sat patiently in the waiting area working from my laptop (the free wifi, complimentary hot chocolate and coffee didn't hurt) thinking I would be on the road shortly. Matt and Josh, two amazing men, kept coming in periodically to update me. It turns out the issue was not only larger than I expected, but also out of their control. Josh even stayed much later than his intended lunch break to help me out! I jokingly offered to buy him anything from the vending machine, but he politely declined. I am completely blown away by their customer service. Matt took his time to explain to me all of the items that weren't functioning properly, what the issues meant, and where we would go from here. As a young woman, I usually get the condescending tone when it comes to cars, such as "Do you know how to open your hood? You know, the lever-pulley-thingy." Ugh. Matt also worked with the dealership to have my car towed and organized my rental. He has called me twice since then to let me know the Jeep dealership has received my car and when they think they can take a look at it. Car dealerships and other service departments have a bad reputation with me, trying to take advantage of a "young, dumb, female." NOT THIS ONE! For the fourth time, we made our way to Carmax on Glenwood Ave. to purchase another used car. Here were my pros and cons: Cons: even though I called a day ahead and made an appointment, gave them info on the car I was looking for (they promised to have them ready for me to drive), told them about my trade in options (we had 2 cars we were ready to trade in), I got there and all of that info I had given was not transferred to the salesman. So, we started all over. That took one hour. Then, in the heat of the day we were set out to pick out a car instead of having them brought up for driving. I will not go back if this happens again. Our entire experience lasted 6 hours - yes, 6 hours. Part of this was due to the trade ins, but honestly, it just seemed like our sales person was the slowest moving person ever. We even remarked several times that we were hungry, and asked how much longer it would be. We never got an answer - just kept waiting. Pros: I got a car I wanted at a very competitive price. The salesman was helpful (even though he knew nothing about what we wanted) and did come up with a car that fit us perfectly. This is what we like about Carmax and why we come back. so me and my wife went into carmax. we bought our rav from there. but we wanted to upgrade to a bigger vehicle. we went looking and found the vehicle we liked. carmax offers a 24 hour test drive. So we went in and talked to the front desk persons stating we would like to do the 24 hour test drive on that particular vehicle. He got us to a sales rep were we handed our ids and insurance info. We signed the papers and off we go. This was around 6:45pm today. We drove around for a bit and went home after. Awhile later around 8pm Shaelynn gets a text and a call stating your test drive was supposed to be 20 minutes. I was shocked because my intentions were that it was 24 hours. The website states it, the front screen in the building states it too. The sales rep never sat down and gave out the stipulations of the test drive and on the paper work it does have a spot were it says vehicle must be returned by this date__ and time__. But they were bank only spot was filled was the date the vehicle departed. I get it things happens it was just bad communication. but what really gets me the manger stating this vehicle must be returned TONIGHT. Its 8pm I'm 20-30 minutes away. I have to be ups early in the morning to go to work. I told him my wife would bring it back in the morning and get it straightened out first thing. But he said no must be back tonight. at first I did tell him to shove it well see him tomorrow morning. But after a minute of thinking I didn't want my wife to have to deal with it. And I didn't want to take off the morning of work just for that crap. But not going to carmax now....... read more

Test Drive a car on Nov 11 around 12:30 pm. Left carmax Glenwood rd around 1:30 pm. Confirmed purchase on Nov 12 at 2 pm. Went back to take delivery on Nov 15 and found tires full of mud and 40 miles more driven. When questioned they said the car didn't leave tye parking lot but the supervisor also found that a different person than the sales rep drove the car in much later than its been taken out. Obviously that explains who drove that extra miles and why the tires and bottom were muddy. The sale rep KC contacted me few times before I arrived on Nov 15 to get info for express check out and I reminded him about the interior not been clean on Nov 11. Still upon arrival found the same condition. Bought my last two cars from Carmax: Acura MDX and VW Jetta limited edition. Went back to them with good faith. They offered my a free oil change. However, the supervisor who found how the car put back by a different person and a later time, probably understood what happened in between. He quickly wrote me another free oil change before i could think of something. He was well mannered n nice. And i liked the car. Its a very good buy. So i settled. However i will not be returning to the Glenwood Carmax in future. I got my VW from Fayetteville carmax in 2012. The agent was very nice. He worked with us 20 times more efficiently than the current one; he did everything from beginning to end and we left content n happy. That didn't happen yesterday; I did the transfer and told someone will contact me. Nobody did; didnt updated the transferring status of car. I found it out by cslling few times when i get to know the car was sitting at the parking lot for 2-3 days! The Glenwood Carmax sucks! Go to some other location of carmax. Find a good rep who is interested in working with you. One more thing, while test driving we found that our rep KC had no idea about which car we are seeing. He could nt answer basic questions like fuel tank capacity, mpg, crash test records, rough blue book value. We did most of the work and he got paid. read more

Hyundai Elantra 2013 - took the care for oil change and airbag light. They said something with the wheels needed to be fixed as well. They returned the car and after :45 minutes driving the brakes started to make weird noises. I don't think I will be using them again. read more

Clarity needs to be made regarding whom an appointment is with as twice now I've visited CarMax thinking that someone I spoke with over the phone or through email was the one I was supposed to talk with. However, that has never been the case. Instead, communication should be made to just ask for whoever might be available. Also, better signage regarding locations of departments would help ease confusion. read more

My husband offered to purchase a new to me car and when a deal like that is made you cannot say no. The catch was he got to pick the car out so off we went to Carmax to look at a Mercedes-Benz. We were warmly greeted by Tasmir Tall and he quickly realized I was a no nonsense kind of girl. He only showed me the kind of car I wanted but I did not see anything on the lot I loved. We worked out a deal to have a certain vehicle shipped after finding the one we wanted using their mobile app. The transfer was free and took only two days. *You are not required to put money down or even purchase the transferred vehicle. My husband went back to look over the car and test-drive it. There was one scratch on the front bumper that everyone agreed, did not meet standards. My car was ready in two days, the dumper freshly painted and she was all waxed up and cleaned. I did end up trading in my old vehicle and was offered $1000 less than what I really wanted but I understand these people need to make a living. The new vehicle purchase price was more than fair. *There is no haggling here, it is what it is. I did see if they could offer me a loan but I bank with USAA and they were able to beat Carmax but not by much. Sandy in the business department was VERY proficient at her job and went over all the paperwork with us in a timely manner. Tasmir and Sandy worked like a well-oiled machine and we were in and out the door in an hour on purchase day, with a total of 2.5 hours spent on the entire process. I have owned about nine cars in my life and this was easily the best experience I have had in purchasing another vehicle. They have a customer for life. I purchased a 2013 Honda Civic EX around November 13. My TPMS light has been on 8 times , cheap tires were put on this vehicle , and now my rear brakes are making a horrible noise. This shouldn't be happening on a car with 28,000 miles and it should have been addressed during the used car inspection. I bought a car a year and half ago, growing in carmax as that title was clean and turned out to be that the truck was rear-ended on carfax reports, and title is damaged, after, having given and paid interest for a year and a half, they tell me that the only thing they can do to me is to pay the bill and a remainder of more or less $ 3,000 I think I lost a lot and was deceived they are not transparent and it does not exist Creep, I suggest you do not buy cars in Carmax or if they ask for all the reports before buying. The buying experience and car trade-in was stellar. Just be careful of that payment plan. They take double payments ("oops") and "can't" refund, reverse, or credit the charges back, which could lead to your bank account being overdrawn. Since this has been done twice, I am not convinced it can be considered an accident or oversight. More like a tactic. You've been warned. Finance elsewhere if possible because they lure you in with great salespeople and caring paper-pushers, but when you need the corporate side of the house, it is a chaotic downward spiral to the multiple conversations you will experience with unfeeling, robotic corporate drones giving lip service and excuses of their failures to the customer. Each of us made NUMEROUS attempts to reach the service department regarding our respective cars. They do not pick up their phones and do not return calls when you leave messages! I successfully sold my car to CarMax a few days ago with the help of Randy! It was a *wonderful* experience, and I got more than private party KBB value (soooo unexpected!). However, I gotta say a few things about previous negative reviews. 1) The value of a car is not dependent on your personal attachment to the vehicle. 2) The value of a car is not set in stone per KBB, NADA, Edmunds, and other similar guides. I actually got MORE for my trade-in then was suggested per car appraisal websites. 3) Gas prices are high, you're not going to get top dollar for your gas chuggers. 4) Yeah, don't expect to get top value if you put tons of miles on the car each year - just because you claim they are highway miles, doesn't mean you have an actual way to prove as much. 5) You can walk away for the offer. There is no contract. On the other hand, don't hassle or try to haggle with the employees - CarMax is known for it's "haggle-free" environment. I got a cheap detail job (seriously, $16) a day or so before I took it to CarMax. I bought my new car the day before, and I asked the dealership to appraise my trade-in, which was a 2010 Corolla S (very clean, but of course all used vehicles need reconditioning), with quite a few options, such as a moonroof, tinted windows, etc. However, they offered me less than AutoTrader's instant offer (which is WELL-KNOWN to be a dealer's STARTING point). The dealership offered me $9600. Of course, I did not accept. Thus, I went online and posted the vehicle to Cars.com and spent $30 listing it on AutoTrader.com. I figured CarMax was worth a shot, especially since I bought the vehicle from CarMax in Sept 2013. Thus, I took the 45 minute drive and had it appraised. The appraisal took longer than expected, but Randy was super attentive and he explained that they take a bit longer on cars that came from CarMax, which I am assuming is due to the fact that they probably trust their vehicles. Well, I tried to act as if the appraisal was mediocre, but honestly - I was shocked on the inside. I was offered $12,500. That alone is private party value of my car, well slightly above. The EXTRA good news is that - since I purchased MaxCare, I was eligible for a refund of the "remaining" portion of the warranty, which equaled a little over $1000. So, I received total payoff on my car (12k even), plus over $1500 in the form of a bank draft. :) I could not be more happy with my experience, and I will definitely go to CarMax again in the future. After visiting several dealerships in the area with terrible customer service and shady sales tactics with thousands of extra dollars added to the bottom line, we decided to visit Carmax. To our great surprise and relief, there really were no other "mystery expenses" added to the total. We also noticed that the used cars we checked out did not have unusual odors. Many of the other car dealerships do not even bother to properly clean and ventilate the cars prior to showing. We also had a great experience working with KC, our sales consultant. He was efficient, knowledgeable, and very helpful. It's still wise to have a mechanic check any used car before purchase just to ensure that there are no major issues -- the oil was overfilled in our car, but everything else checked out great. I have used CarMax over the years and for the most part I have been pleased with their service, pricing and selection but today was the 1st day I had a WOW experience. I secured financing for a car at home via carmax.com. Within the next hour I was at the dealership. I test drove the car and completed the paperwork within an hour and was on my home with my new car. The experience was VERY easy and fast! I was also impressed with those I interacted with at the dealership. I was greeted by Rick and he seemed very happy to be at his job. He was wonderful with me and I as sat there in the lobby he was great with each customer that came in the door. He is the perfect person to have at the front door. My salesman Brian( aka Happy Bday guy) was also tons of fun. He seemed to genuinely care about me as a customer and that I was thoroughly educated about the car. He also seemed to enjoy his job and the people he worked with. Lastly Samantha in the business office was quick, professional and clearly explained to me all the paperwork. Agree with the other reviews. I went to get a quote in the hopes that I could at least get the KBB trade in. Car was in good to excellent condition across the board so I figured that worst case scenario was the lowest quality trade in estimate from KBB. The guy helping me out was nice but when the estimate came back, they were 2000 below the lowest estimate on KBB which ultimately was 4000 below the potential value of the car. That is with the carmax evaluation sheet indicating good condition. So ultimately, the service was great but good service doesn't mean that you will get anything remotely close to the value of the car. Which defeats the point of the company I think. So if I have to make an honest review, I give 2 stars for the helpfulness of the service and 0 additional for the value of the service. I wouldn't recommend this place for selling a car. Pros: Lots of selection. Lots of people work there, so you can drop in any time and be descended upon by people who want to help you. Good website so you can set search alerts and transfer in the car you want when it comes available. Cons: The guys don't know the cars like the guys who work at a dealership that sells just that type of car. Here's how that hurt me and totally wasted my valuable time: (And how the lack of professional follow through lost them the sale and my business and earned them this low review). I knew exactly the car I wanted and set a search alert for it (Prius V with seat heaters). One finally popped up and before it was even photographed, I called and put a deposit on it and paid to have it transferred to me from out of state. I came in to finalize the transfer, which for some reason took almost two hours at the dealership on night. No big deal. When it came in, I spent nearly 3 hours there securing financing (pretty easy process if a little slow), doing the test drive, handling paperwork, etc. Decent process. Right as I was about to drive off the lot with my new car, I asked where the button was to turn on the seat heaters (which had been advertised every step of the way, from the trim level five on the listing, the seat heaters listed on the website, on my paperwork, on the sticker on the window, etc. etc.). Well, long story short, they couldn't find the button, because guess what? It was a trim level two and had no seat heaters. Or navigation. Or many other features that a trim level 5 has that a trim level 2 does not. I looked to my salesman to see how he was going to react. A mistake is a pivotal moment. A person can own it and make it right and earn a lot of respect. Or he can sweep it under the rug and really make it worse. Well, he advised that I buy the car anyway and just drive home and see how I felt about it, as I had five days to return it. I did not enjoy that idea, as seat heaters were one of my only requirements in the first place. Plus, that didn't sound much like an apology to me. When I was inside getting my money refunded, he showed me a different car. Not a different car to replace mine for the same price, mind you. Just a different car I should buy instead. It was $2000 more and was one model year OLDER and had 10,000 more miles than the deal I had just secured in writing. I won't name my salesman because he was a nice man, but had he made a minimal effort to make things right for me after this screw up, (i.e. either apologizing and installing seat heaters after market, or swapping out for a car in their inventory that fit the advertised specs for the advertised price, etc.) he would have had a customer for life. Instead, I went and took my business to Fred Anderson Toyota, who fully earned my loyalty and my money. read more
