Wouldn't even give it a one star. Boyfriend bought a car from this carmax on 12/23/21 and it took FOREVER. We waited almost 1.5hrs for it to get "washed and filled up with gas" after purchasing. When the car was finally ready, we didn't even make it out of parking lot when we noticed a scraping noise coming from the car that was NOT there when we test drove it. There's absolutely no way that no one getting this car ready heard this sound, and no one mentioned it to us. So, we turned around and left with rental since they didn't have any technicians to look into the problem. Got a call on 12/27/21 about the problem they were fixing and picked up the car on 12/29/21. Got home and went to leave for work and now the check engine light is on. Horrible service throughout the entire car buying experience. I had a 2017 dodge journey at first which was a gas guzzler and the interface wasn't good. But now I'm in a 2018 Chevrolet equinox and I couldn't be happier. Overall experience I received from this location was great and friendly. I don't remember the last time I walked into a carmax but it wasn't this good. From the moment I walked into this dealership I was greeted with kindness. I was selling my vehicle and the process was quick and simple. They appraised my car in 10min. The process for them to get me out of my lease was the only wait I had to do which lasted roughly 30-45min. But instead of waiting I had lunch and came back. Everyone in this place is nice and treat you with respect. I would recommend any thinking of selling you vehicle to come here or to a carmax closer to you and see what they have to offer. Sales team is great, service center is all a scam! 5 months after our purchase they tried to convince my wife that she needed new front brakes stating that they were completely rusted and worn. I brought my new purchase to a dealership and they told me that the brakes were practically new (75% remaining) and no rust at all. The dealership gave me pictures to prove the false claim by Carmax. Just another example of a nonethical repair shop trying to take advantage of an innocent female. I didn't think this would happen at carmax but I was almost scammed. I recently bought a Toyota Camry. I had my mechanic take a look at this car and he pointed out an audible squealing noise coming from the area of the water pump. How is it possible that the mechanics did not hear this audible problem? I brought the car to your service department and it took almost a week to get the car fixed. After picking it up it still made the squealing noises. In other words, the Service Department released the car as "fixed" when it still had issues. Excuse me, but do your mechanics need hearing aids?  One would have to be DEAF not to hear those squealing and screeching noises. I picked up the car again on 7/15/21 and again it was supposedly repaired. I brought it over to my mechanic to check and he again pointed out squealing noises coming from the area of the water pump. This is unbelievable and unacceptable. This needs to be investigated by you and especially your quality control needs to be looked into. Weeks after buying this car, it is still being repaired. And of course, it will take at least a week before I get it back. And I am almost certain that it will still have issues that need to be fixed and so on and so forth. I am currently a cancer patient undergoing chemo and made this fact known to the people in your service department, including John, one of the managers. I trust that this information is in your computer or has been passed on orally. Besides, anyone with eyes in their head would have seen me suffering, unless they preferred to ignore it. Besides, I made all the service people, like Jennifer, aware of my situation. While in great pain, I was made to wait for hours on end to get a loner. Thank you for your compassionate understanding of my situation. I am writing this review to inform anyone who goes here for car service. They are unreliable, non communicative, and not personable. Also, if you want your car to be checked over, don't expect an in depth look. They "visually" look at it but don't actually inspect anything. How are you supposed to know anything just by looking at it?? Brought my car in back in August and wasn't even told I had bad tires until I asked about it. Then I was told my car looked good and there were no concerns. Brought my car to an auto shop today to get new tires and I was also informed that my brakes were shot, had a bad battery, needed this and that. But again everything was FINE not even 2 months ago at Carmax. I called Carmax and basically was being criticized about bringing my car somewhere else and that Carmax does a great job at inspecting what needs to be inspected and that these other places just want my money. Also called all afternoon and didn't reach anyone. Talked to a couple people from another department and they said they would leave a message for me. Apparently that message wasn't given. I had a very good experience at the CarMax dealership in Schaumburg, IL. It was not the typical high pressure sales tactics you get at a traditional dealership. As the sales people do not work on commission. My sales person was very friendly and test drove 3 different vehicles with me on a very very cold night. He did so with a smile and when I apologized to make him keep going out in the cold he said "no problem we can test drive as many vehicles you are interested in" He made me feel like he was interested in that I got the car I truly felt good about. Versus traditional dealerships just want you to buy the most expense vehicle they can force you into. We waited a bit to do the paperwork as they were very busy that night but once we got started it went very quickly. I would definetly buy another vehicle form CarMax. read more

I bought a car from Carmax July 2023 in Naperville IL and took out their Maxcare warranty to warrant the car until 100,000 miles. After 20,000 miles had an engine failure, the replacement engine is failing after 1300 miles and I have been getting the runaround for over 3 months to repair this engine. I do not have a car at this point, they have not touched the car for over a month while they point fingers at the supplier and while their internal warranty companies try to figure out what to do. I would not buy a car from Carmax and definitely would not waste my money on their Maxcare warranty and national dealer service. Very dissatisfied. Contacted multiple people within the warranty groups and no one wants to solve the problem correctly discuss options to get the car repaired. Think twice before entering any extended warranties with this company. I even contacted the Illinois Attornery General and they still don't want to repair the car. # months without a car and currently no parts ordered. Buyer beware. read more

This location has the worst communication I've ever experienced. From scheduling me to come in and pick up a car instead of delivering it to telling me my partner doesn't have to be there, then refusing to release the car when they arrived. To top that off, he agreed to come and sign, but they wouldn't wait the 40 minutes for his arrival. Then when I spoke with a manager I was informed that what I had to say wasn't even relevant. This is my first dealing with Carmax and have to say it was a wonderful experience. We worked with Laura Berry and things went very smoothly and timely. We were in and out on 2 1/2 hours and that included the appraisal of our car, financing and prep of the new car. We had looked at the cars on line and found a car we liked and put it on HOLD. We had an appt with Laura and when we arrived she has the car in front waiting for us to test drive. When our new car was ready (washed, plates changed) she presented the car to us with a BIG Yellow bow on it.....Nice touch. Bought a Yukon at this location, between my father and I this is 6th vehicle we are buying at CarMax usually at Glencoe location, buying was always a very pleasant experience. This time around I was blown away. Gentleman selling us the vehicle was wonderful. But Jessica in service department gave us absolute 5 star service. Patient, answered all our questions. It's all about details. I was holding my toddler, she held the door, had the loaner parked side by so that the transfer of baby seats and stroller is easier. I'm sitting here now with Laura and she's amazing. I can't say the same about Dale who has zero personality and zero customer service skills. As someone who has worked in the customer service industry there is an expectation of service. I brought all the documents I needed and yet I still needed to login to the computer to pull up more bank statements. I was here on the previous day working with Laura and Paul and given different information from Paul. Carmax needs to be consistent with the information they provide. One day your told one thing and then you come back and deal with someone else and told something completely different and that is not a way to conduct business. Carmax needs to do better, and having to login to one's personal information on computers in front of people is a violation of privacy. I've never had to do that when buying a car you just bring in your documents I., e paystubs, proof of address. Again, Laura Berry has been a pleasure to work with. I think I reviewed the Carmax auto repair department before and gave them a negative review. The store/dealership part of this business is as five-star as it gets, but as a whole, I sadly cannot give them 5 stars because waiting 3 hours for an oil change I booked two weeks in advance is and always will be ridiculous. Let's put that aside, though. Let me tell you about why buying and selling cars here is so wonderful, and why we are three-peat customers here. --This is pretty much a no BS zone. The sales team has no financial motivation to pressure you into buying a car that is too expensive for your budget--they earn the same flat commission no matter what you buy. No car with serious damage in its past goes on the lot. The financing is decided by banks, not by some guy in a back room. No-haggle pricing means that nobody is going to try to negotiate you out of the features you want to try to get rid of old merchandise. --The sales team is not rude. They greet you when you enter, they don't insult you if you want to sleep on it before making a decision, and they don't try to tell you what you want. Compare this to the typical sleazy car salesperson and be glad that Carmax exists. Today, we pretty much took up Mary's entire day, and she didn't make us feel rushed or pressured even once. Try that at Jerk Bozo Nissan or Idiot Barfbag Ford. Won't happen. --Everything from the vending machines to the play area shows that they care about the customer, even at the corporate level. Yes, you read right--they have a play area for children in the show room. It has hand sanitizer and real toys in it, not a Barney DVD and a couple of germy stools. The multiple vending machines--in three locations--have healthier fare in addition to the usual candy bars and cookies. The coffee in the waiting area isn't too bad, either. The offices have multiple chairs in them, plus coat hangers, plus spare pens. Somebody at Carmax is paying attention. --The variety of vehicles here is amazing. Sure, you probably won't have much selection on tow trucks or catering vans, but for your average car shopper, you can walk onto the lot and expect to have your choice of several quality vehicles in your price range, any of which you can test drive. I have been to single-brand dealerships where they had one, and only one, of the "hot" car, and nothing comparable in price or class if we didn't want to get on a waiting list for one with the features we wanted. In comparison, Carmax had some 2011 models on the lot, with under 5K miles, for much less than it would cost to buy the same thing new elsewhere. --Appraisals are quick and easy. Again, the no-haggle policy helps keep things moving, and they tell you exactly how they got to the number they tell you. Sometimes this means handing you bad news, but they handle it with grace and manners. --If you do a trade, you can do the sale and the purchase all at once. The process is set up so you that if you have all your paperwork, you can walk into the office, sit down, and do almost everything involved in buying and/or selling a car in an efficient, relatively quick fashion. --They will send a car from another location to your preferred location at no charge if it is within 100 miles. If you see one you want on the web site, just tell them. There is no need for *you* to drive the 100 miles or whatever it is to get that vehicle. In the end, my husband and I are on our third vehicle from Carmax between the two of us. We haven't regretted the purchases at all--I still have the Scion I bought from them a few years ago, he sold the Jetta he bought before that because it became impractical for our lifestyle, and now that we are having a baby, we went to Carmax for our "family car." With the exception of running into an ex-boss on one visit, I can honestly say that there's not much I would realistically change about how my experiences here have been. Terrible service department. I called in around 8am and scheduled an appointment for Tuesday for some pdr repairs and it was confirmed. I then hired a babysitter and scheduled a day off work to get this done. Then the service manager John Wogsland doesn't even take the time to call me himself, showing no courtesy at all, he has someone else call me to say they no longer do pdr for customer pay but he has them call me close to 6pm, 20 minutes before they close!! If that was the case he should have called me earlier so I didn't have to make those arrangements and pay for a babysitter! This is poor customer service on the managers part. The only reason this review is even worth one star is because the service advisor Martin was a great guy to work with. I would like a call from the service manager, store manager or someone from customer relations please. read more

This was my second time buying a car from a dealer. My first experience years ago at a Nissan dealer was a disaster. 4 long hours! Last night I went to Carmax because a friend of mine recommended them, he had previously worked with Jim Sorci, and he suggested I do the same. I made an appointment with him and told him before hand what I was looking for. When I got there he had some cars pulled up for me to see. I arrived at 6 pm and drove out of there in my new car before 9 pm. Jim was absolutely amazing! He listened to what I wanted, he stayed within my budget and made the entire process painless and quick. He gave me good tips, didn't try to over sell me anything and spoke to me like a friend and not a sales person. I started shopping for a car because after as often as I pay for rentals and car-sharing memberships, figured it was about time I actually get one. I had a LONG list of cars I was consider and I called many places. Finally, I stumbled onto CarMax and worked with Brian. He was patient, friendly and encouraging. And, when I thought that the distance would be too far (and I thought I saw a car at a closer location), he didn't push too hard and try to goad me into something I wouldn't be interested in. As luck would have it, that car sold and another car I wanted ended up at this location -- so back to Brian I went. When I got there, he was great, took time to ask me what I would need, had looked up the cars I told him I was interested in and didn't try to push any models on me. And, when I finally settled on one, he was super relaxed and didn't seem bothered by how late we were there on a Friday night. I also asked tons of questions and he handled them all with a smile. All in all, for a first time buying experience, I loved it. HUGE selection, modern clean facility and busy but cool staff. And the best part was the no-nonsense of it all. They priced my potential sale right on the money (when comparing to dealers in the area), and Tony, the rep we interacted with, was friendly, efficient, and helpful. The waiting area is basic, but everything was clean, tidy, and all employees I met were busy yet cordial. While I opted to go the dealer trade in route for a bit better of a deal overall, I'd definitely recommend this CarMax for a speedy appraisal and the generous 7 day payout option. read more

Just another used car dealership. I assumed I would be given a fair price and that the CarMax Quality Certification and one month in which to return the vehicle would mean something. Their quality certification is terrible and one month is not long enough of a time to see if you've bought a lemon. I purchased the car in February. The rear brakes needed replacement a few months later and so I had that done and I thought "oh well, one thing." Then in June the engine started misfiring due to a bad spark plug. So I was thinking "they didn't even check the spark plugs in February?" The worst was July: the engine started misfiring again, due to carbon buildup causing a malfunctioning spark plug again. And the oil was filthy even though I had recently changed it. It turns out the entire engine has a carbon buildup problem which will take more time and money to replace. Lots of it. And I checked the Carfax report which states I stupidly purchased the car for four thousand or so more dollars than I should have. I will never return and I strongly caution buyers to try your luck elsewhere. read more

Which is why I appreciate CarMax. I've purchased 3 vehicles from them and brought one in for them to buy. All of my experiences at this Schaumburg location have been relaxed, easy and rewarding. When I brought my car in for them to buy, they offered me more than a dealer was offering as a trade-in. And of the three used vehicles I purchased from this place, each looked like brand new and gave me years of trouble-free driving. I never had a problem with any of their vehicles that was connected to the quality of their cars or the condition it was in when they sold it to me. (Any problem was a manufacturer's design flaw) The reason I keep coming back to this CarMax is because I truly don't want the hassle and games played by car dealers, I know I'll drive away with a quality vehicle at a reasonable price, they offer financing in-house, and in general, buying cars from them is simply a breath of fresh air. read more

He met us at the door when we arrived, he was prepared for our appointment, had printed materials for us, and after a brief conversation, he went to get the vehicle for a test drive. He offered answers and insights on the vehicle and warranties, he looked up information that was not apparent and he ended up making arrangements for us the pick up the car we wanted at another location. Even though he did not benefit from sending us to another Carmax location, he made sure to find us the car we wanted to buy. If I could give zero stars I would. I was treated horribly. I went on a Tuesday night and my sales guy was gone. I confirmed the appointment earlier. He apologized and would have another salesperson meet with me. I get there and the other salesperson was unavailable so they had me wait. I met with a newer salesperson who was leaving but reluctantly showed me the vehicle. I asked if I could test drive and he said okay but was visibly frustrated. I suggested I would come back on Saturday, which he said was preferable. I come back on Saturday and meet with the original salesperson who apologized for the inconvenience. I take the car on a test drive and agree to purchase. I complete the application and was told I needed a down payment. I agree and state that I would go to the bank to retrieve the funds. The salesperson says he's about to leave because he has a party to attend and would prefer that I come back another day to complete the transaction. I, again agree and would come back during the week. He never calls to confirm. I decide to call and I get no answer. I stop by after work to finish with any salesperson. I had to re-complete the application because it wasn't saved. I again fill out the application and this time I am told I need to bring employment verification. I again, agree to these demands and inform the third salesperson I would return. I work so I cannot take off everyday to complete this transaction so I come back the next day. The new salesperson tells me that they waited for me and that I made them wait. Hold on I am the customer! I have been to your store over 3 times and now you are complaining to me that I had you wait? No if I am the customer why did it take 3 salespersons to try and sell me a car? The wait was so long today. The guy at the front told me there were 11 people in front of me so it would be about a 45 minute wait. I waited almost 2 hours before anyone talked to me. What really annoyed me was one of the sales guys was watching YouTube videos on his phone. Whatever... I'm not the one working on commission. There's construction going on so the place is taped off and ceilings exposed. The guy that worked with me was nice and straight-forward but like the other reviewers said they give you an average or below average price if you're selling.
