I sold my previous car to CarMax last week, one day after I had taken my car there to get a free written, non-pressure appraisal. They were very efficient and professional. They explained the process and indicated that I had 7 days to take advantage of the quote. I followed-through two days later, after I arranged for a rental car so that I would be able to get back to my home in Alexandria, VA. Their quote was just the amount that I needed to pay off my car and have funds left to put towards another less expensive car. The whole process went very smoothly. I have bought two cars from Carmax. I won't make that mistake again. Certainly don't buy the extended care service plan. Carmax will fix your car after you wait ridiculous periods of time for them to get around to looking at your vehicle. I have had three experiences with this now. 1. My car was having engine trouble. I had to wait a full 7 days before they could fit my car into their schedule. 2. My wife had the thermostat go out on her car. She had to wait a week. 3. My car broke down, left m on the side of the road Sunday night. I had it towed to Carmax. When I spoke to them Monday morning, they told me it would be a week before they could even look at my car. After getting the run-around from two separate Ford dealership service departments (Koon's and Jerry's) on what was a manufacturer warranty item, the Carmax Service department went above and beyond in not only ensuring that the MaxCare vehicle maintenance repair items on my vehicle were effectively repaired, but also reached out directly to a reputable and honest Ford dealer service department (Cowles Parkway Ford), obtained verification of the manufacturer warranty repair, and saw the repair through the entire process. This is yet another reason why I have bought, and had vehicles serviced at Carmax since the mid 1990's. For a single-parent, and road-warrior, like myself with an incredibly busy schedule Carmax's end-to-end professional and effective customer service was priceless! CarMax pulls ahead of the average car salesmen by, being clear with what they will give for your trade, no backroom BS and a fair price what else can you ask for? I got a fair trade on my car and the check cut on the spot, same thing for my father an-law, no haggling and No BS. The décor was nice and the employee seemed happy, probably a nice Part-time opportunity, my one suggestion would be to expand the lot it's just a tad bit crowded. read more

I purchased a 2019 Range Rover on 1/30. The following morning I realized the fan under the hood was extremely loud and ran constantly. I called Land Rover and they told me to stop driving the vehicle, most likely the water pump was bad. Shouldn't this vehicle have been inspected? I took off from work and brought the vehicle back to Carmax (after having it detailed because it was sold to me FILTHY with some generic floor mats instead of the Land Rover ones). This next part took 90 mins! I was offered an Acura rental, at this point I requested something a little more comparable to the Range Rover I just purchased 12 hours ago, but had to return because of the negligence of Carmax in their haste to make a quick sale. On Saturday I contacted my sales rep, who told me that my car was already at Land Rover being evaluated for repair. Didn't trust Carmax, so I called both local Land Rover dealerships and SURPRISE, they didn't have my car. Monday I called Carmax, guess what - MY CAR WAS STILL SITTING WHERE I LEFT IT ON FRIDAY. My car sat at Carmax for 5 days until it was towed to Land Rover. I had to harass them DAILY & it was finally inspected on 2/10. (11 days after I brought it to them) Water pump was bad! I purchased this vehicle on 1/30 and 14 days after dropping it off I STILL DO NOT HAVE MY VEHICLE, WHICH I HAD IN MY POSSESSION FOR LESS THAN 24 HOURS. Now Carmax is expecting me to make the first payment? I do not think it is at all unreasonable for Carmax to cover the pro-rated portion of the payment because they've had this car 14 days to my 12 hours. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING OVERALL. read more

He was super nice and helpful, and didn't push when I decided I still wanted to purchase a new car elsewhere once I sold my trade-in. I waited only 15 minutes and received my quote which was exactly the amount I was hoping for. I recommend going their early if you're headed there on the weekend. I was in at around 10:30 on a Saturday morning, and it wasn't too busy. Eric mentioned that it gets pretty packed by the afternoon. Highly recommend coming here to get your car appraised. This is bad situation good story. I had a vehicle transferred in from out of state. It took less than a week for the vehicle to come in. I initially liked it so I purchased with my own money. The process of buying was painless with the added bonus of driving off the lot with the permanent vehicle tags. Got home and some things happened that caused me to return the vehicle the same day. This process to return was painless also with no pressure to keep the vehicle of flip the money for a new one. The big drawback was there was something major "jerking" with the brakes that someone should have caught during a test drive or inspection. read more

So I brought my Honda leased car into this CarMax and wanted to sell my car. I did end up selling my car (which was quick and painless). Two weeks later, I signed onto my bank account and was charged by Honda for a car payment for the following month. I ended up calling Honda and CarMax who both blamed each other and Honda claimed that CarMax didn't send them the payoff for my lease until almost 2 weeks after. Now I am stuck going back and forth trying to figure out who should be owing me for the money I'm out. CarMax then took it upon themselves to call Honda and claims that Honda will be sending me a check in the next week or so for the money that was taken out of my account. We'll see if I actually get it, but be aware that CarMax will not immediately pay off your lease and this can cause an issue if your car payment is due soon. read more

CarMax broke my convertible and now refuses to pay for the damages. Please read this and let your friends and family know. I had the worst experience of my life at CarMax of Woodbridge three days ago. Let me start off by saying I've sold many cars at CarMax before with no issues and with excellent customer service, this time however was different. I arrived with a friend to have my convertible appraised and look at their selection. They took my keys, put a cone on my car, and so far so good. Normally in the past I've been with the appraiser while they walk around the car but I guess they do things differently at this location. I was then told to move away from the salesman's desk while I waited, which I thought was pretty rude as he then proceeded to bring over his colleagues so they could joke around instead of serving his customer. About 30minutes later, I recieved the appraisal and went on my way to think it over. While leaving, I attempted to put the convertible top down and nothing happened. The switch did nothing, and it made an awful cracking sound. I had just dropped the top that morning so I knew everything was operational when I dropped the car off. I immediately drove back and asked to speak to a manager. The tech who inspected my car came to tell me it wasn't his fault. I asked to talk to his manager and he went to go get him, then both of them and three other employees went into an office for about 15 minutes, maybe looking at footage, maybe coming up with a story? Who knows. The manager comes back out and tells me there's nothing they can do, and his manager will have to call me tomorrow. I called this next manager, who then proceeded to tell me there was no way CarMax of Woodbridge would pay for the repair. I emailed CarMax corporate with no response, and I'm lost for what to do. This is absolutely ridiculous, my car was in perfectly working order when I brought it in and in the process of appraisal, CarMax broke the convertible mechanism and now refuses to pay for repairs or return my emails. Absolutely shameful, please stay away from them for your own good. read more

Since this was my first time buying a car thru a dealership he took me step by step throughout the whole process. Good service. Got a reminder text and email prior to my appointment. Asked to add an oil change, they politely explained that it was not requested initially when I booked my appointment, so that was a downside. Although, they called 20 min prior to my appointment to let me know that whoever had an appointment afterwards, canceled, and they can do my oil change-awesome, but too late, I had it changed prior to the appointment. I wouldn't trust purchasing a vehicle from this location. After buying a Jeep Patriot, 2 days later the electronic throttle light appears. I then took the car to my mechanic for inspection. My mechanic stated that Carmax needs to replace the gasket. Carmax disagreed and said "the gasket had met company standards and did not need to be replaced; it just needed to be cleaned." Selling your car here was a great experience. I'm not saying you can't get cheaper by selling it private party, but if you are busy and don't have the time (or if it's not financially worth your time as your job pays a lot per hour), then going to Carmax is totally worth it. The people here are pretty nice especially the greeter, the process was very easy and well-thought-out, and the waiting area was pleasant. All in all, unless you are selling your car 100% on your own, then this is the way to go. Do not sell it at a dealership unless you want to get ripped off, or unless they're willing to give you an equal or better deal than Carmax for a trade in IMO read more

This is a service review. I bought a new Toyota Camry at the wholly owned Carmax Toyota dealer in Maryland. The molding on one door came loose and the dealer had the replacement shipped to Potomac Mills location for our convenience. I had been treated extremely well over the phone as we organized my appointment, and found the part. On arrival, I was greeted by name and the part installed without delay. I also had a small scratch which happened on the initial ride home after purchase. As others have indicated, CarMax definitely low-balls the price when you are selling to them. Of course they gotta make money, but..... I did quite a bit of research on what my car was worth in the condition it was in and realized what I was finding online was just a general estimate and any offer would be subject to the vehicle being inspected by the buyer. That said, I used Kelly Blue Book (http://www.kbb.com/), Edmunds.com and NADA Guides (http://www.nadaguides.com/). All three of these nationally known resources estimated a value within a couple hundred $$$ of each other, so I was pretty confident of my car's value. Still, I took the lowest of those three estimates and subtracted about $500-600 to have a good range of what I should expect to get. So, I went into CarMax knowing the lowest offer I would accept, based on fair market value for a trade in. Of course, selling it myself to another person would have allowed me to get MUCH MUCH more for my car. I actually listed it on Craigslist for $1500 more than the estimates and got initial offers and interest. But, you are probably reading this because, like me, you don't want the hassle that comes with that route. So, I was willing to take a value closer to a "trade-in" offer or less. I went to CarMax first and they offered MUCH less than my estimate, and they do everything to assure you their offers are realistic and an accurate offer based on the value of your car. Not even close. They even revealed their offer on a computer screen like they were revealing some amazing offer I should be excited about. I almost laughed. The only thing missing was the drum roll. Later that same day I took my car to a local office of WeBuyAnyCar.com in Alexandria VA, and they offered me EXACTLY what I had estimated I could sell the car for. I had a range, and they came in $25 dollars above the lowest price I was willing to take. I sold it to them on the spot, and got a check before I left their office. Their offer was well over $500 more than CarMax had offered. I truly felt they were not trying to take advantage of me and gave me a fair market offer. No gimmicks. Just business. I would highly recommend you shop it around to other buyers such as WeBuyAnyCar.com or AutoTraders.com. Don't only use CarMax or think they are the only "game in town". Two weeks ago we sold Carmax our 2011 Equinox and bought a 2014 Town and Country. The appraisal process was super easy and the appraisal came in about 2 grand higher than we thought. I was very pleased. Our salesman Paul was friendly, attentive and relatable. He made selecting and purchasing the van easy. We never felt pressured at all. We had our two children with us and the play area they have available for them was a huge help. The finance people were efficient and friendly. Gotta give a shout out to Carmax for helping me unload my old Honda, which had served my family faithfully from 1998 until last weekend. Wherever it is, I hope it's in a good place. I had read online that Carmax was the place to go to sell an old car fast and easy and get a pretty good price too. Two weekends ago I headed down in anticipation of selling the old car and got it appraised. Took 30 minutes and the price was right in line with KBB and twice what the dealer where I bought the new car ended up offering. Last weekend, after buying the new car, I headed down there to sell the old one (it was imperative that I do so that night, since their appraisals are only good for 7 days, and I had had it done exactly a week ago). Anyhow, turned out I got there an hour before close but I had forgotten the title. It took a roundabout means to procure it and to cut to the chase, they let me stay an extra hour past close in order to finish the deal. No nonsense, just a check, right there on the spot. The staff also walked me through all of the steps I would need in order to make the various state and local regulatory entities aware of the sale of the car, which was really helpful since VA has the most convoluted set of car laws I have ever seen. Especially coming from FL, where we don't have laws (Seriously, inspections? In FL we use natural selection...if it's still running what could be wrong with it?). Overall a great experience, helpful people, and the price was right. read more

Their service department & it's staffs are a joke. There are few good ones but the rest are just plain rude & unprofessional. There are days where you can keep calling & no one answers. Their receptionist is so lazy on the phone (called & asked to speak to my service advisor & she didn't even ask for my name & number). I asked her if she needed my name & number, she then said ok. On the same token, I have yet found a Service Advisor there who care about providing a descent enough service or give a damn about the car I bought from them (these so-called service advisors only do the bare minimum). Good luck leaving them a message,'coz they rarely return my calls but if I am lucky, they'll call back right before they close. I told a service advisor about a huge stain in the rear seating area after 30 days & she said I could've spilled it. I told her that one I am not a liar & two I only just found out 'coz I was trying to give my vehicle interior a small detail & that my only mistake was not going over my newly purchased used car a more thorough inspection from top to bottom! Last Monday (12/9/13), I purchased a 2011 Nissan Murano with 16,000 miles...sounds great on the surface right??? I had the worst experience ever at this dealership. Not only did they under appraise my car by about $2,000 and the salesman called me a loser for not wanting to purchase the maxcare -which I spoke to the manager about - but then they sold me a used car with a number of issues. Now that I think of it, maybe that's why the salesman wanted me to buy the maxcare-he clearly knew something I did not. On the 5th day after my purchase, I took the car to an objective mechanic because the cd player started skipping. The mechanic noted a leak in the transmission, a faulty audio system, tires that would need to be replaced next year (tire replacement alone totals $1,000), and low brake pads in the rear...all issues he said he typically doesnt see until the car has at least 50-60k miles. Who with good integrity would sell a car like this to a customer? When I returned it to Carmax, because clearly I wasn't keeping it, the first response I received was "your mechanic must've lied to you we check all of our cars"...0_o ...really? really! He didn't say I'm sorry to hear that or let me see if we can find you a better fit or shoot even let's fix the murano. He did eventually end up suggesting that I work with my original salesmen to which I said no thank you. I asked to see another salesman because I was not comfortable with the one I had before. I met with someone new-test drove 5 cars but after the hassle decided that I should take some time to think on it. The manager on duty offered me a loaner while the Murano was being fixed and told me to think about if I wanted a different car. I thought about it and decided that not only do I no longer trust the Murano but I didn't trust the integrity of that dealership. I ended up returning the car and walking away with my original vehicle.I would never recommend this dealership to anyone. read more

Last year I had to get a larger vehicle due to my father becoming disabled. I was originally driving a scion xb. We held on to it figuring we would use it as a back up car for when vehicles needed maintenance and such. After a year of it just sitting in our driveway we decided there is no point in paying for the insurance and personal property tax. I went on carmax's website did the online appraisal request, which was super easy and convenient. It had me take pictures of my car and enter any information I wanted as well as the vin number. About two hours after I submitted everything I recieved a email with a appraisal value. It was an extremely fair price for a 2008 Scion XB and more then we expected. The nice thing was they didn't call and hound me. The next day I called to see if I needed to make an appointment. The receptionist was very pleasant and told me since I already did the online appraisal I could just come in during standard business hours and go to the business office and let them know I wanted to accept an online appraisal. We did just that. When we first walked in we were pleasantly greeted by two receptionist who directed us to the business office. I gentlemen at the counter greated us. He pulled my name up on his computer. Asked for our title and Id as well as car registration. Told us to have a seat and that one of the employees was going to I spect the car and they would be with us shortly. Not long after that we were called up to go speak with Angela. She had all of the paperwork ready and the check in her hand. She was just as pleasant to work with as everyone else we encountered. She went through all of the forms with us. Gave us a check list of things we need to do,like cancel insurance, how to report vehicle sold to county ect. The entire in office process took under a hour. I highly recommend there services if you have a car you are looking to sell. Another company we tried before them totally low balled us and was definitely not efficient, they completely wasted our time. I will do a review on them next. Should I be in the market for a car anytime in the future I will definitely be doing business with Carmax and especially at the Woodbridge location. read more

I have purchased many cars in my lifetime, four from Carmax. The first three purchases I would rate would rate as fives. The last one was reminiscent of the shady used car sales you hear about. First the car was always parked in a barely accessible spot that prevented a good look at the car.the car was always backed up to the building which prevent me from seeing a major scratch in the bumper. The salesman rushed us into the car for a test drive. The tires were over inflated by 15 pounds. (This gives the impression of a firm ride). The offer on my trade was was well below market value. In the past the trade values were well within market average. Which is ok when you have a no haggle policy. I am happy with my car, I just will not put Carmax at the top of my list for future purchases. This experience has tarnished there image in my eyes read more

First truck was taken to the service center four times totaling 7 weeks. CarMax provided a loaner SUV while they had the truck in for repair. Truck was not repairable even after they replace many items. They would not take the truck back but would buy it back towards buying another truck. So I lost $2000+ in the deal (they offered $800 less than I paid plus I lost the sales tax, fees, tires I had bought, etc..,). Next truck is working great. CarMax vehicle report on the second truck states no accidents but later I have found the truck was partially repainted. read more

Having a frustrating time trying to buy a car from CarMax. I paid a fee to have a car shipped from upstate New York to here on May 29. I received an email that showed a single car on a transport and that the car would arrive June 12. I couldn't believe it would take that long to ship a single car. When I contacted the salesman he said the graphic wasn't reality. CarMax waited until it had 8 or more cars to ship south. Thus the delay. I heard nothing from them on June 12 and went to the store. I was told the car was delayed until June 14. Today I called and asked to talk to a sales manager. He said the car was delayed to June 17. Unfortunately, they don't seem to know how to manage customer expectations. If I hadn't gone to their store or called I would hear nothing from them. And when I talked to the sales manager today, all he did was whine about how people were trading in cars since they got tax refunds or Covid stimulus money. In the meantime, I wait for the car that I probably could have got by riding a bicycle to upstate New York to pick it up. read more
