Awesome little grocery store. This block has several little Russian groceries and it's best to go to the all of them so you can find your favorite things in each. For Carmel, I can advise: - great, cheap dried fruits with a fabulous selection and good quality for a good price - olives -- also fantastic and at a great price - good tahini and eggplant spread -- again, cheap and tasty - pastry pouches filled with potato, mushroom, cabbage, etc -- also sooooo delicious and like 75 cents each In addition to all of these things, you will no doubt find some little fantastic thing to tickle your tastebuds and be very kind to your wallet. read more

This is one of my very favorite little grocery stores in all of the five boroughs, and much like sojourners from the west used to make day trips to the Trader Joe's in Wayne, New Jersey or Merrick, Long Island, I continue to make occasional trips to the middle of Queens to buy real middle eastern foods. 108th Street in Queens has for a long time been a mix of Bukharis, Russians and Israelis, and the items the little grocery stores stock are geared toward recent immigrants, so not only do you find the very best olives and pickles and breads, Lebanese cheese and spices and dried fruit and nuts, but they have things like Israeli baby formula and powdered chocolate milk mix, canned foule (a Yemini food), and imported candy. I'm a big fan. Places like this are part of the reason that Forest Hills is so special. read more

This store lives up to the hype. I saw all of the good reviews and wondered what's special about the store since there are so many similar stores in the neighborhood. I walked by a couple of times when they were closed and was finally able to walk in the other day. Now I can understand why. 1. The store is very clean and orderly and well organized. 2. I can tell that each product is hand picked carefully. 3. Prices are very reasonable. I tried decaf coffee beans, smoked salmon and a few pastries, which were all good. If you're anywhere other than from the US you probably will find something on the shelf or tucked away behind the fridge which you'll reach for. About once a month, I make a special trip from Manhattan to stock up on their extraordinary pickles: cracked green olives, turnips pickled in beet juice and tiny gherkins. Just sooooo tasty! Also wonderful are their "eggplant tahini" (a creative version of babaganouj) and the "eggplant onion" (also a wonderful dip, Armenian style). Carmel also carries pickled and smoked fish - my favorite is "homestyle herring," which I often have with vodka straight from the freezer. Their salmon roe is beautifully pearly and full of briny flavor. Don't forget to get a few cans of "Riga Sprats." The prices are very reasonable. Oh, did I tell you about their dried fruits? MUST TRY: Ground coffee - freshly roasted on site and ground to your type of coffee maker Hummus - amazingly fresh, garlicky goodness Eggplant Tahini Dip - creamy, garlicky with a hint of spiciness. Perfection! Eggplant Onion Dip - savory and a bit more mild than the Eggplant Tahini - goes with everything! Admittedly, I was put off by the color and texture of the eggplant onion dip, but bought it since they were out of eggplant tahini dip that day - no regrets. It was delicious. I introduced the dip to my co-worker in Manhattan and she loved it too and I gifted a whole large jar to her. This shop is the Queens for those who grave Middle Eastern delights. I've tried hummus at a few supermarkets, including the Trader Joes version, and still nothing top's the home made hummus dip sold at this store. It goes well with the organic local baked WW pitas delivered fresh daily, except Shabbas. Their flavored coffees are all natural and only 8.99 Lb. Same prices I saw at Fair Way but taste's a whole lot better at this establishment. I also find this store to be one of the very few in my hood that carry Persian food products. It's my main stop where I pick up the green herbs and dried lemons for my Gourmet Sabzi dish. You can also find instant falafel mix for a very good price. I only buy the Osem mix which is easy to prepare. It's the next best choice to falafel straight from scratch. During the week of Passover they also have a wide selection of products at a great price. For my sweet tooth cravings, they carry dark chocolate covered orange peels for 6.99 Lb. Delicious!!! Tasted just like what I brought at Porto Rico coffee shop in the city. The employees offer quick and friendly service. The line leads to multiple registers, never have to wait more than 5 minutes. read more

Finally found a place that grinds their own garbanzo bean flour (aka chickpea flour, gram flour, etc.). Maybe they don't grind it, but it's in a huge bin and you pay by the pound ($3/lb), good enough for me. They were very friendly and helpful, even asked me what I made with my flour (rosemary and red onion socca!). They had lots of other goodies I'll make sure to try on my next trip back, I'm out of my flour! read more

When you're there - you just crave to try it all, but make sure to know what your buying, some packages don't exactly explain what the product is and the stuff is sort of unable to explain (they know what it is, but can not translate it to you), however they are very friendly! This is THE location for eastern European goods. I lived across the street as a little child (108-13). My mom would always shop here for the best dried fruit and fresh coffee and don't get me started on the hummus... it's to die for. They have specialty chocolate candies. So good. I come here almost every week. This is my favorite place to get pita as it's always fresh - yesterday I came around noon and the bread was still warm. They also have Lebanese style pita. Olives and salads are great. My favorites are the white bean spread, hummus, veg. beans, and Romanian eggplant. Very hard to resist getting baklava and spinach pies too. And the maamoul they carry is delicious as well, made in NY, unlike the packaged maamoul that you find at Sahadi's which is made in Canada. My family loves the coffee here, we usually get the flavored ones. So far we have tried vanilla hazelnut, pumpkin spice, and chocolate coffee. Chocolate is our favorite though. Often times the more elder customers are really rude - like push you with their walker rude. You need you assert yourself because even if you just have one thing to pay for, a customer with 50 things won't mind cutting at all and you'll end up standing in line for over 10 minutes. Definitely avoid coming here during Jewish and Christian holidays as much of the community comes here to get their favorites like hummus, baba ghanouj, ikra, etc basically they stock the case with all the salads and the line can go the the back and wrap around into the tiny aisle. I came here during Passover time for chocolate flavor coffee and the employee gave me coffee bean shaped chocolates. Overall my favorite place to shop. The freshness of the products is unbeatable. It's crowded and small, and the people behind the counter aren't always the warmest and friendliest, but I'll go back any day for their eggplant tahini (DELICIOUS) and hummus. We had a special occasion and ordered all of our food from Armon. Due to my home location (W. NJ) I did not have the ability to physically go to the store and pick out the food, however, I did order everything over the phone. We had 80 people at the event and could have fed 150. My family and I took the rest of the food home and will have happy tummy's for at least a week! The cost to feed everyone was more than reasonable. The food was fresh, authentic and everyone loved it. Any time I had a question I called Armon and he was always there to help. He even called the next day to find out how the food was! read more

Several times a week, the aroma of coffee being roasted at Carmel Grocery floats through the entire block. Everybody smells the air and smiles. Carmel is a tiny store on the corner of 64 Rd. and 108th Street. Don't know how they manage to carry so many items in such a small place, keep them neat, fresh, and appealing. I go there for olives, coffee, tea, and fresh pita bread. And spices, of course. A friend of mine told me that their Baba Ganush salad (roasted eggplant, garlic, tahini) is the best. Will try it.
