We had a wonderful celebratory meal this past Sunday. Upon entering hand sanitizer was offered to our party; staff wore face masks during our entire stay and the dining room was set up for social distancing. The food from their summer menu was superb as usual, including the chef's selections appetizers for our table. Brendan our server was attentive throughout without being intrusive. He even anticipated the need for a cup and straw fir the littlest member of our party. I highly recommend a visit to Carmello's for a celebration or a romantic dinner. read more

Went just now for new years dinner. We had a reservation for 8pm. When we arrived we still had to wait 10 min. We got seated and served water and bread promptly. About 15 min later our server finally came. Really nice guy, Edwin, but we were starving so we ordered an app and our entree at the same time. Oysters Rockefeller was delicious but we had to wait for utensils. Bread was good. Our food came after 9pm. I believe about 9:15pm. Medium filet and lobster entrees were great. I wish I had a steak knife but I managed with the bread and butter knife. Fiance had to ask for a seafood cracker for the lobster. Service seemed really slow. For the price of our meal, we expected higher service. Edwin was nice but we definitely felt a little overlooked coompared to other guests and other restaurants with similar pricepoints. I've dined at Carmello's many times over the years and have never been disappointed by the food. If you haven't yet stopped in, you really ought to! Each of the seafood and pasta dishes I've tasted have been excellently prepared with perfect balance and delicate presentation. Others with whom I have dined had positive things to say about their steak/lamb/pork being delicious too. Also - some foods I never thought I'd enjoy were lobster and rabbit, both of which I've tried and loved at Carmello's. I will note that I've found the service to be a bit overkill (too stiff? it's Manassas!), however their careful attention to the dishes is really worth the drive. One star deduction due to the visits I've had where my server did not go over the specials with my party at all... and then we learned of the specials by eavesdropping on the server explaining them (with great care and detail!) to the table immediately next to us after we placed our orders. The minute we walked in - we could smell the delicious aroma. The special of mahi on real risotto (Arborio) with grilled zucchini and squash was unbelievable. Fish was delicious, risotto perfectly cooked. Can't say enough. Hostess and coat check were sweet and friendly and welcoming which set the mood. Hostess was so courteous to move us from a middle table to a side table in minutes when we requested. Chris our waiter was very accommodating and wonderful. The only downside was when a group of 9 women came in to celebrate a girls night out... They were loud and disruptive. It would've been nice if they had a corner or a private room to go to. Me and my friend had to borderline shout to hear each other after the group arrived. I don't understand the 3.5 stars- definitely 5 stars from us. My friend from NYC raves about it all. read more

Carmello's - Italian Near Me - Manassas, Virginia

So I had mixed feelings about this place based on the reviews, but we utilized the 3 Course Dinner for $75.00 from Groupon. My boyfriends mother and father took us for dinner yesterday Monday (8/12) for my birthday and this was our experience. Atmosphere - I would give this place 3 stars, the decor is very upscale and expensive looking. However the section of the restaurant we were in was very small and there was too much on the tables for the size of this area (Middle Section straight back - Booth) Service - I'm going with a 1 Star here.. I worked as a fine dinning server in an upscale country club, so I know and fully understand wine service, table side, and just general good service. Which here I found a severe lack of. Upon entering the restaurant we were acknowledged by the hostess in a reddish floral dress with a cardigan on and pulled back brown hair and what appeared to be 2 hostesses in training. I stated that we had a reservation for 5:30 to be promptly told "I will be with you in a few" where she continued to train these two hostesses. How extremely rude. About 2 minutes later she acknowledges the name on the reservation and brings us to the table. At this point I'm far past irritated at her lack of professionalism. Customers are to be acknowledged and taken care of first, not whenever you feel like it. We were greeted by what seemed like a polite server which for the most part she was, however she could rarely be found when we needed her. Quite frankly that was a lot during this dinner. I saw the Hispanic table assistant (bus girl) far more than our waitress and frankly I feel like she didn't speak a lick of English. I understand that you need to work, but when we tell you to take our salad back because it was so salty it was in edible that doesn't mean put it in a box. It means take it back and remake it. The young man who must have been a lead or a manager was very polite and took our salad back. He was extremely professional, and by far the exemption to this 1 Star. Food - 2 Stars. The groupon provides you with 3 courses for 4 people. So needless to say there was plenty of food for us. We chose the seafood Wellington, baked oysters, bruschetta, and a dried meat of sort that unfortunately I cannot place the name of. The appetizers were okay. Far too much salt on about 3 of them. For dinner we had the pork wrapped in prosciutto, pork osso bucco, diver scallops, and the lamb steak. The scallops were chewy, the risotto was overcooked and had an absolutely terrible taste. The only thing I can recommend is pork osso bucco, it was flavored well but again the risotto was terrible. I've been going to Carmello's "little sister" restaurant Monza regularly for almost two years now. (And still The Duke as of this posting!) They share the same kitchen, and in the past I noticed that many of Carmello's menu items in the "middle tier" price range were also over at Monza. So even though I love the food at Monza, and Carmello's offers the same beer selection, I never felt the need or desire to go to Carmello's. I guess a lot of people felt the same way, because shortly after part of Carmello's was refashioned to expand Monza, which was rapidly growing in popularity. Recently, because I am on the Monza mailing list, I was sent a coupon for $20 off a meal at Carmello's, so I decided to check out their menu online. I was pleased to see that the menu was completely revamped with very little "carry over" from the Monza menu. Recognizing that Monza has it's own loyal customer base, the management decided to create a new Carmello's menu that pushes them further into the "fine dining" category and emphasizes fresh, locally sourced product. My wife and I decided to take advantage of the coupon and stopped in on a Sunday night. Outside of one large party, the restaurant was nearly empty, and it took a couple of minutes before we were noticed out front to get a seat. And overall, if I had to point out a weakness with Carmello's, it is that service seemed a bit slow. Our server was fantastic, but things just seemed a tad slow coming out of the kitchen. Still, we were only there for about 80-90 minutes for three courses, which isn't too bad. Our server offered us a complimentary glass of Portuguese wine to start, a nice touch. My wife took advantage, but I went for beer. They share the same bar and thus the same draft selection as Monza, although wine is the focus of Carmello's. I knew the Monza beer selection better than the server, but I think that's more of a statement about me than her. :-) The wife and I both started with a bowl of the Crab and Corn Chowder. It was fantastic ... a bit more refined in flavor than the Crab and Corn Chowder at Okra's. For entrees, my wife got the Pan Seared Frutti di Mare. It came with a generous portion of seafood (crab meat, scallops, and shrimp), saffron fettuccine, and a wonderful lobster béchamel sauce. I ordered the Beef Short Rib Ravioli, which featured six large ravioli served over an amazing cauliflower puree and a tasty red wine cream sauce. Both the wife and I absolutely loved the entrees. They have a strong dessert selection as well, including a fantastic chocolate cake that they make using the Southern Tier Creme Brule stout. Given that Carmello's is pushing even further into the "fine dining" category, eating here ain't cheap. The prices are pushing into, but not quite at the Capital Grille / Morton's price range. It's definitely the priciest place to eat out at in Old Town Manassas ... but it's totally worth it. It's a "special occasions" type of restaurant, and I look forward to celebrating these at Carmello's in the future. read more

Untrained staff, major issues with them. We took our infant daughter with us, big mistake. They don't have a changing table in the restroom. I asked staff where I could change her.. I was told to take her outside and change her on a park bench with traffic wizzing by.. umm totally unimpressed. Asked for high chair.. waited... waited.. finally went and got one myself.. Manager saw me storming back to the table with the high chair... and asked if he could help me.. I said your staff has already done enough.. Told the manager what happened, he apologized.. then comped our entire meal... But, it was a little too late.. By that time I was livid and just wanted to leave. Food was good, but portion size left A LOT to be desired. We actually left and went thru the drive thru.. Sad. I don't think we will be returning.. read more

disappointed with our experience here. first, we ordered a $50 dollar bottle of wine, our server came back letting us know they were out of that bottle but suggested a bottle that was comparable so we went with her suggestion. our appetizer was great we got the Brie. however, the candle on our table went out and our server went to relight it while continuously coughing. she stood at the side of our table continuously coughing while she searched for a lighter. it made both myself and my husband uncomfortable. when we received our food it was just okay my duck was basically all fat so unfortunately not overly enjoyable. we decided to skip the dessert and get the check only to find out the wine that was suggested to us and "comparable" to the one we selected was $95.00! honestly the wine was the only thing enjoyable about my meal however we were completely mislead. for a 200 dollar meal we could have gone somewhere much better. read more

We started off with drinks in Monza and would have been happy grabbing a bite there in hind sight. But our guest wanted a trip down memory lane and so we went to Carmello's for what became a bad dream aka dinner. The server we had was good. We ordered a Barbaresco to accompany our dinners. The only shame was that she broke the cork while opening it....luckily no cork in the glasses but the chance to check the cork, the most important part of the inspection, was missed. Ordered the lamb and she asked how I wanted that cooked. Had it come in anything other than medium or medium rare that thinly sliced lamb chop shank that was cut like a T-bone or rib-eye would have been shoe leather. Ultra lemony flavored 1/4" thick shoe leather. The pork Osso Bucco - we should have known then to reconsider as Osso Bucco is typically beef - was missing all the sauce and marrow that one yearns for when ordering this dish. The dense risotto added to the overall flavorless experience. The mushroom and veal dish that our guest ordered was okay, not great. They were very kind in substituting spaghetti for the usual accompaniment but she only ate the veal and some of the mushrooms. That's the rub. When you go to Carmello's you expect fine dining, terrific service and an outstanding wine selection. What we got after months of having been away, was a poorly executed dinner on an extremely scaled back menu. I've been traveling a lot to Manassas over the past year. I first visited Carmello's in June of 2011 and had an absolutely fantastic meal then. It gave me hope there was more to Manassas than Olive Garden & Red Lobster! But this last visit was easily ranks one of the most disappointing meals of 2012. My date and I both ordered the fresh fish of the day (grouper). When our waiter brought it out it just looked disappointing and not at all appetizing. Then we both took a bite and it was just all wrong. Dry and aside from a fishy expired taste it was utterly flavorless, it should have never made it to anyone's table. We brought it up with our server who agreed it was a terrible choice but there was no offer to make things right. I'm fine with dropping $70 on dinner for 2 but this was so disappointing I'll never be back. read more

Carmello's is delicious, but the last time I went, service was very slow. I'm not sure if this was due to the busy time, it was a week or so before Christmas. Be aware that the prices are high but the food is well made and of higher quality. I got the duck breast and it was fantastic, as well as a pear martini that I really liked. Definitely a great place. It does get crowded and cramped however, so be aware of this when you go that at peak times it will be a little stuffy. read more

I took my wife here for our anniversary as I was looking for something unique and "classy" without the noise of an urban atmosphere. Carmellos is located in quiet, easy to get-to downtown Manassas and since I live in Lake Ridge, this was a great alternative. Plus they offer Portuguese cuisine which I have always wanted to sample, but never had the occassion to do so. My understanding is that the place went through a renovation about a year ago. When we arrived we found the restaurant to be a quiet, elegant establishment with a friendly hostess and knowledgable waiter. I must say the service was top knotch. Appetizer. We had to get the snails. I mean, I've never had escagot before, so I had to get the snails! We enjoyed them alot, reminded me of scallops but with a lighter consistancy and unique sauce. For the entrees we chose Portuguese fare all the way. My wife went with the PAELHA VALENÇIANA and I tried the traditional BACALHAU À CASA (traditional boneless cod with onions and peppers over uniquely styled potatoes). Both dishes were wonderfully cooked to perfection and were served in sufficient porportion not found at most sophisticated restaurants. The only thing is as a restaurant in the league that it aspires to compete, it is not a five star establishment. For elegant dining, they are missing the wow factor that would set it up as one of those places to impress. I absolutely adore Carmello's!! For the last 8 years Carmello's has always been my first choice for special occasions, fancy pants dinners and amazing food. They have been through some chef changes over the last year or so but the new Executive Chef, Kyle Bianco is creative and unique. The new spring menu isn't your typical fettuccini alfredo... he has taken Portuguese/Italian fine dining to a whole new level. I've had the chance to talk to him when he came to our table one night - he comes across very excited and passionate about his food. Combine that with his amazing talent and they've scored a win/win situation! If I had a guest spot on TV Networks "Best Thing I've Ever Eaten"... in my top five would be the Oysters Rockefeller at Carmello's. Fennel, bacon, spinach and parmesan roasted together with Rappahannock Oysters, they are truly heaven in your mouth. The Berries Zabaglione is my favorite way to end the meals here, its pure lightly sweetened perfection that isn't overly sugared and heavy, save room!! The manager Zack has always left an amazing impression on us as well. He visits each table and ensures that every guest is taken care of. I feel like the whole team behind Carmello's is trained to focus on suburb customer service, everyone down to the bus staff is polite and quick to offer a smile. This isn't the best place for small children. It's fine dining, not Logan's. Youngsters would certainly never be turned away but to the best of my knowledge there is no children's menu, no table to color on, and no changing stations in the restroom. Grab a sitter and enjoy an adult night out, leave the babies at home. If you are looking for a more relaxed bar environment, stop next door at Monza. This is the sister restaurant of Carmello's where you will find a pretty trendy bar, unique drink menu, microbrew beers, music and an overall laid back atmosphere! We wanted to have our wedding rehearsal dinner here, but there had been a fire. So, we hadn't been back since. Whatever they did with the insurance money worked. It no longer looks like a hole in the wall; its very nice on the inside, and looks far more upscale and "shiny" new. The food is still a little pricey, but its not too bad. Additionally, the menu has gotten a little more authentic. There is less Italian, and more Portuguese food. The ambiance is much nicer, and we absolutely loved our meal. The Beef Wellingtons were amazing, and the crab/cheese/asparagus stuffed chicken was amazing. Ill be back soon to try other menu items! read more

My husband and I decided to give Carmello's another try on Saturday night. Glad that we did. What a difference a good waiter makes! We were spoiled from the moment we walked in the door. Our table was ready, we were greeted right away with water and out waiter came right away to take our drink order. The menu looked great but then we heard about the nightly specials which sounded even better. Everything was perfect. Drinks, appetizer, dinner, dessert. The menu even had some items from a local bakery right in Manassas city. So nice to have fine dining so close to home. read more

The "new" Carmello's is amazing, classy, intimate, and has delicious food to boot. We started our night with complimentary champagne, snails, and oysters...We had never had snails before but felt comfortable to have these be our first. They were amazing, great texture and flavor. Then we moved on to the Bacalao and the grilled seafood plate. The bacalao was tender, rich, and the bed of potatoes it rest on were a salty-crunchy delight. We finished the night with the marzipan mouse and the creme-brule cheesecake. They were both so good, we each had 1/2 and then switched plates. We dined at Carmello's for the first time last night and agreed that, in spite of the nice wine selection and upscale atmosphere, the food was mediocre. Service was a little rushed at first but the waiter quickly got the message that we were going to take our time and relax over dinner. I ordered the bruschetta appetizer (it's really just chopped tomatoes) and found the baguette slices soggy in a few places. My husband ordered the mushroom caps and commented that they were a little bland. Entrees were the pesto pasta and pork shank. Second courses were better than the appetizers but still unimpressive. Creme brulee for dessert had a nice, hard top but was nothing special otherwise. The wine and bread were the best parts of our meal! And that's just not enough to keep us coming back. *Another person commented about the lack of a changing table in the bathroom (shouldn't they be standard everywhere?) but there is one in there now. My husband's family invited us along for Mother's Day dinner tonight at 7:15pm. There were six of us total, and when we arrived the place wasn't full, and didn't seem busy at all. Our waitress was fun and helpful, but everything seemed to take forever to happen. We ordered drinks which took close to 15 minutes to arrive. We then ordered appetizers and our entrees at the same time. The appetizers took 25 minutes. Then the soup before our meals took another 15 minutes. Finally an hour and 20 minutes after we sat down our entrees came. I ordered the 6 ounce filet mignon. I ordered this Medium. What I received was basically rare. The meat was still "moo-ing" at me. It took almost 2 hours for the experience, which normally wouldn't be an issue, except people who came in after us were served first and gone before we received our dinner. I have been a fan of Carmello's for a very long time. My husband and I had our rehearsal dinner there for our wedding back in 2007. Carmello's was always a place I regarded as the best of the best. Came in with a groupon. We were asked at the door whether or not we'd be using groupon or ordering from the menu. We were directed to a dining area that seemed to be ALL groupon users. We were asked if we'd like complimentary champagne and it was delish! The menu was limiting but was pretty good. The risotto balls, not sure what they were "officially" called, but they were good...a nice crunch with a creamy center, husband had the fried calimari which he liked. I had the caesar salad which was nothing special, though it was very fresh, the shrimp chowder that my husband got looked more like a veggie soup with shrimp in it. Then on to the filet mignon...it was good, tender, a little over cooked. The potatoes that came with it were also a bit over cooked, tasted charred. Hubby got some seafood and rice dish that he liked. Finally, dessert...it was fabulous! Raspberry sorbet and chocolate mousse! Amazing!!! Really poor experience and not a very good meal. Server was awkward, fumbling, and didn't seem very familiar with the menu. Refused some really easy requests, like slicing an appetizer for a table of business associates to share. The food was poor. While the Ahi Tuna appetizer was decent, this is the first restaurant I've been to where they've managed to make pork belly bland and unpleasant. Anything that is not a chain and not in a strip mall likely gets 3 stars from me, unless service is rude or the place is dirty. Carmello's is a family owned restaurant in Old Town Manassas, it has been an anchor restaurant for decades. In 2010 the restaurant had a fire, and it has been renovated. It is a redecorated and has a charming atmosphere. There are two dining rooms, the smaller of the two is more intimate, the larger is better for groups. Reservations needed: Make a reservation, or you will wait or be turned away. The food is fresh. There is a lot of seafood and fish, so if you are alergic or don't eat either of two, you may be dissapointed. I had a traditional Portuguese dish of rice, varried shellfish in a crock with a tomato base sauce (Don't remember the name), it was very good, but I like shellfish a lot! There is an excellent chicken dish with a light sauce, asparagus served with angel hair, it was good for my 16 year old who doesn't like seafood very much. The chicken was light and thin, very tender. The have a wonderful dessert cart, but often run of out of items if you are a late diner. Outdoor in summer, they have seating on the side street. With the neighboring restaurant they share a live band, it's a bit loud, but a very fun and enjoyable setting between the old brick buildings with nightime lighting. read more

Went here with my wife and another couple Saturday night. Overall, it was an excellent experience. The service was very good. The interior is very nice, white table cloth. We had a private seeming booth. It was actually near the kitchen but still felt private with high seat backs. The food was very good. I had a roasted beet salad appetizer and short ribs and pappardelle for my entree. The meat was delicious. The pasta was a bit over cooked, but not too bad. My wife had the paella and thought it was really tasty. The portions are very generous too. They have a nice wine selection, too. We had a very good merlot from Opolo. We didn't have any dessert so I can't comment on them. We will definitely return. It isn't the best fine restaurant in the area - that's the Bistro l'Hermitage, but I rate Carmelo's highly. Just try it. You know how I hate chain restaurants. Some Carrabas/ Olive Garden joints put a dump truck load of garlic on all their food and call it "Italian". This is a class joint with a nice wine humidor in the dining room ( I love a nice rack....wine rack... yea that's it) and a fine selection. Usually a restaurant burns down and ....well, the insurance company writes a fat check. Next thing a new title loan or MVC Late night opens up in its place. Nope...Carmello's reopened with a fresh new face and nicer digs. The food is memorable and high quality. Bring mom or your date, you won't disappoint. Just be prepared for a 2 hour dinner...which is fine if you didn't buy tickets to Jiffy Lube Live after (you promised mom an Englebert Humperdink show don't forget). I've eaten at carmello's twice now and nothing stands out about this place. It is located in old town manassas. The place is kinda small. One of the times we went, they were packed even though we had reservations we had to wait for about 15 minutes and the second time i went i had reservations as well but was seated immediately because they werent as busy. The second time even though they werent as busy they stuck us in this little table in some corner when there were a ton of other tables available. That was kinda annoying. The service was just ok. This place i think gets older people coming in so when they saw us being so young i guess they were less attentive. It was so bad they didn't even bother to ask us if we wanted dessert. It was my friends birthday and i specifically asked for them to bring out something and with an entire dessert tray they didn't even bother to ask him what he wanted and after giving him his birthday cake they didn't even bother to ask me if i wanted anything assuming we were going to share? who knows. The food was ok. I got the calamari for starters and it seemed to be too oily and overly fried but it wasn't horrible. For entree i got the "create your own pasta" it was just very ok. Nothing really sparked about it. Im rarely ever in old town manassas but if i were to come back i would defnitely try some of the other restaurants out there. For me the crappy service and the ok food isnt worth the trip. read more

Amazing! Went here for a late valentine's day and noted so on our reservation. We were given a cozy booth and I was treated to a rose. We were also both given a free glass of sparkling wine. We had the mini wellingtons and snails, both cooked to perfection followed by the pool shank and the paella. The food was only second in quality to the service. Not too pricey for the quality, and it was a good amount of food. Also had the marscapone mousse and the cannoli. All was perfectly seasoned, well plated, and high quality. Delicious! read more

Came here on Christmas Eve as a party of 5. Things started off awkward. My Dad's water glass was filthy and three of the 5 place settings were missing napkins and flatware. It took 10 minutes for someone to come fix the place settings and fill our water glasses. Then another 15 went by before our server came for our drink order. I swear he did not say one word the entire dinner! He just stood there when he would come to the table. After 30 minutes, we got our drinks and he took our orders. We did not receive our appetizers (all cold salads) for another 45 minutes. So at this point we had been there for over an hour and 15 minutes before our salads made it to the table. After salads were cleared, entrees came relatively quickly about 10 minutes. Server never came to ask how things were or refill drinks. We flagged down other servers and busboys to get additional drinks. At the end of the evening we asked for the check. It took more than 20 minutes to get it and after waiting another 10 for him to return to run it, I just walked the check up to the hostess to pay. Overall the service was just horrible and took us more than 3 hours to get through a meal that was just a cold salad and an entree. The food was really really lovely though. I had the beet salad and salmon topped with crab meet. Very very tasty although I would have preferred the salmon cooked a little less. My sister had the chopped salad which was also really good and the salmon as well. My dad had the ribeye which was delicious and my mom and aunt had the ceaser salad and chefs special which was scallops and shrimp on top of capellini in a cream sauce. We all really enjoyed the food but it takes away from the entire dining experience when you are literally chasing your server down and begging other people to help you. Overall, I would give them another chance because the food was great. The service was probably the worst I've ever had....but maybe it was just the volume of Christmas Eve. But, Carmello's, you really should have your best staff working on busy nights and this clearly wasn't. read more

Friends and I did NYE here, fix menu, some descent variety on it. Took a bit to be seated. Waitress was great. Food was exceedingly slow, perhaps intentionally. Soup and Appetizer were good, main dish, stuffed pork loin was mediocre and dry, desert was good. Bit overpriced for quality. I don't know what these people are talking about.. I'm sitting here (came here with hubby and a groupon) currently digesting my delicious meal - I got beef Wellington, hubby got calamari both excellent but the calamari was the best I've had in a while - tasted fresh- Caesar salad was underwhelming and the roasted red pepper soup was delicious. Main dish we both got filet mignon - DELISH!! dessert? Mango sorbet and chocolate mousse - I ate both!! Food was great! Adali (butchered spelling?) our server was amazing! I called the restaurant the day before NYE hoping to try and get a reservation since obviously all Open table was booked. I was surprised that the host was very willing to get me in on such short notice. He placed me on hold to get approval from the manager as they were already booked up. I think most hosts would just see they were booked and not even bother to try after floods of calls. Awesome employee...wish I knew his name. We got to our 9:30 (squeezed in) reservation on NYE and only waited 15 minutes on the busy holiday. I really enjoyed that we were offered complimentary champagne upon seating. My husband and I decided on three appetizers, two salads, and shared a 10 oz filet mignon. It was a ton of food and I'm glad we got to try a good chunk of variety since we have never been there before. Every course we had was absolutely delicious and the steak was the best filet we have had in a great deal of time. We had a wonderful NYE! We are local and will definitely be returning here! Solid Italian food, a bit over priced for quality, quality is definitely better then a macaroni grill or carrabbas. Wine is nothing special decent selection definitely could have more in the Italian range not bad wine list just not what you'd expect from an Italian restaurant. Service is good. Wow. Went for a quiet evening and had a bar type volume. Although the appetizers were wonderful, the noise was so deafening we cancelled our order. we couldn't get out fast enough. Very disappointing when Chucky Cheeses is quieter. Not quite fine dining, more of good food with bar volume. *Update: I was willing to give it another try when Alice, the manager, contacted me offering to send my husband and I a gift card.
