If you're looking for a spot with great food, a cozy atmosphere, and plenty of photo opportunities, Black Sheep in Virginia is definitely worth checking out! Making reservations was quick and easy, and there was plenty of parking, which is always a plus. From the moment we walked in, the restaurant had an inviting vibe. It's the perfect place for date night, girls' night, or a celebratory dinner. And if you're someone who loves capturing the moment, there are plenty of picture-worthy spots throughout the restaurant. We started with the complimentary bread basket, which was the perfect way to kick off the meal. For appetizers, we ordered the Mediterranean Garlic Shrimp, Southwest Texas Eggrolls, and Crispy Chicken Wings tossed in a garlic honey sauce. Every dish was packed with flavor, but those garlic honey wings? Whew! Sweet, savory, crispy, and absolutely finger-licking good. The Mediterranean Garlic Shrimp was fresh and buttery, and the Southwest Texas Eggrolls were crispy with a flavorful filling that disappeared from the table fast. To pair with our meal, we enjoyed a crisp Sauvignon Blanc that complemented everything perfectly. While Black Sheep is known for its whiskey and wine selection, don't overlook the wines--they have something for everyone. Overall, this was a fantastic dining experience. Great service, delicious food, a relaxing atmosphere, and an easy dining experience from start to finish. I'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu. If you're in the area, add Black Sheep to your list--you won't regret it!

Finally crossed off my bucket list after a year of waiting--and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We had a 3:45 dinner reservation and arrived a few minutes early. After checking in, we were quickly guided upstairs to a cozy, rounded booth--an intimate and perfect spot for two. Our server, Katie, was fantastic--attentive, knowledgeable, and refreshingly honest when helping us choose between dishes. We started with the deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes, paired with the Black Sheep Mule and a watermelon cocktail (wish I remembered the name!). For our mains, we ordered the short rib rigatoni and the steak bulgogi bowl. To finish, we shared the weekly dessert special: an Earl Grey tres leches. Everything was exactly what I hoped for and more. The starters were standout, the entrees were packed with flavor, and the overall aesthetic of the space was just beautiful. We'll definitely be back--next time for brunch!

This review is long overdue as it was a really great experience! This was a birthday dinner for me back in January and I reserved the loft area for me and my girls to celebrate. It was also my first time at The Black Sheep but I had always heard wonderful things - all of which turned out to be true. The loft area is beautiful and overlooks the entire restaurant. Also when you reserve the loft, which holds up to 16 people, you order off the regular menu. I loved this as other places I checked into were much more restrictive with a higher minimum spend and fixed menus for groups larger than 8. We had 12 in our group. We started with a bunch of appetizers for the table and cocktails. Appetizers included the bacon tower, fried green tomatoes, hushpuppies, crispy chicken wings, and Mediterranean garlic shrimp. Dinner entreés were jambalaya pasta, the American wagyu burger, pulled short rib rigatoni and branzino almondine. There were zero complaints. We enjoyed EVERYTHING!! The bourbon butter cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert literally took me over the top. My belly was ready to burst :) Our waiter was attentive throughout the entire time and everything we ordered came out perfect. I must go back soon. It is a distance from where I live but there's so many things on the fabulous menu I want to try.

Hidden in plain sight but known to many around. Eating inside a barn.... Cool why now. You will appreciate what they did to this place. To start things off you've got to try the black sheep barrel-aged old fashioned, worth every penny. Food: who doesn't love bacon. The bacon tower folks you will enjoy it and want more. The pork belly and garlic shrimp all had great flavors and were delicious. I tho the fried green tomatoes would have been good. Crunchy but I couldn't taste the flavor. I ordered the Porterhouse steak. Everything was good however I ordered medium and got mostly medium well. The flavor was there for the medium parts. You can't leave without looking at the desserts. I'm not that big on dessert however the bourbon butter cake was outstanding... bourbon, cake, and ice cream chef's kiss. My experience here was good overall. The atmosphere was relaxed, drinks great, good food, and service outstanding. I hope to come back and give the steak another try.

The Black Sheep did it again! My son wanted to have dinner here for his birthday. Seasonal decorations were intentionally placed without over doing it. After booking a last minute reservation, we were pleasantly surprised to see a birthday card on the table signed by the staff! Food was fantastic. Minestrone soup was hearty, flavorful, with a hint of spice. Pork belly tostadas were flavor explosions on your mouth. His NY strip was cooked to the perfect temp with a side of the creamiest mashed potatoes I've had. Bread pudding dessert was delicious too. Will keep visiting and trying different dishes.

Black sheep has become a stable for my friends and family. All around great staff, beautiful space, and great food. Out of all of the times I've been, no waiter has offered to share the history of the structural components of the building so that was refreshening to get that this go around. thanks to our waiter on the Saturday we went (a young man can't remember his name). We had the shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles. Both were amazing, I love their shrimp and grits not tomato-y, but savory and just smooth!

We recently visited for our 39th anniversary (1st time)..my hubby, mother, sister, and I. Service was excellent. The food was great: Steak, Salmon, Burger , appetizers of shrimp and calamari (best we have ever had). Dessert and drinks were good. Beautiful place and beautiful atmosphere. You will pay for the meal (we hit the $400.00 mark) for four of us...but we'll worth it and we will be back.

So happy to have stumbled upon this restaurant. FYI call to make a reservation and don't do it online they have more options over the phone. This was per our server Bryan. Great casual atmosphere and they had a concert playing just outside which was cool! We started with the deviled eggs and the chefs plate charcuterie and it was the perfect appetizer. The deviled eggs were topped with candied bacon. Soooooooo good. My husband got the 12oz steak special with green beans and mashed potatoes and he loved it. I got the short rib rigatoni and honestly it really wasn't what I was expecting and I don't recommend it. It was very plain and next time we go I would try something else. Wishing I tried the Halibut special lol. We will definitely be back!

Definitely recommend if you want to enjoy cocktails and shareable plates in a new way. Parking was smooth they do have valet parking available. We didn't have reservations but we were able to still get seated at the bar area they do book reservations fast book ahead of time. The wait time wasn't bad at all we got a drink at nearby brewery they call us within 10 minutes are less wasn't expecting that so that was real nice. HighlyDefinitely recommend doing reservations ahead of time to be seat at a table. Checking in was nice and the bar is a good time to socialize as well as get to see the bartender make your cocktail like the movies. I got the ginger peach martini with fried green tomatoes, pork belly tostada and Hawaii fried rice are all delicious. The atmosphere is both casual and upscale and perfect for a date night and this right near a brewery and they also have live music outside of the restaurant where you can vibe out after dinner it's definitely a hidden gem

Rustic chic ambiance with wood paneling, high ceilings, crystal chandeliers and comfortable booths. The food is elegant New American fare with steaks, oysters, etc. Reservations, especially for holidays, are necessary. We chose to have lunch with extended family here on New Year's Eve, largely due to the extensive menu which offers a lot of choice. They went viral with their Neuske bacon appetizer which is torched to order table side while you watch. So of course we had to do that. The bacon is very good, but the show is the real reason to get this appetizer. It definitely wowed the kids. Entrees were uniformly delicious but the French onion pork chop (thick cut chop smothered with caramelized onions and topped with toasted cheese) was a stand out. The burger and fries got thumbs up from the kids. Grandparents enjoyed the pear salad and filet mignon. Service was excellent, attentive but not overbearing. Restaurant is fully accessible with an elevator and there is a large parking lot. A wonderful special holiday experience.

I've come at least twice more since the last review. Once for brunch last year, which was a letdown, and last week. Focusing on the recent experience, came to enjoy good food outside and music. We had Chris or Tom wait on us who gave great service. He knew why we were there and let us take our time ordering, etc. We had calamari, cucumber coolers, and branzino and burger. Everything was tasteful, but I have to point out that the calamari was not fresh- it was easy to break apart whereas fresh squid remains firm. The breading was not too dense or too light. The branzino was an excellent mix of flavors and jealous I didn't get it myself. The burger was nothing to brag about. Asked for medium well but didn't mind it coming medium rare. The cocktails were on point as usual. Overall, the service and ambiance always impress. I've noticed some variation in quality of dishes over the visits, pointing to kitchen consistency. At times, everything is spot on, while at others it feels just a bit off. That said it's easy to come again, making this a solid four

This was a spur of the moment outing for dinner. It was a great decision. It was very cold outside but it was nice and toasty inside. The ambience was sexy to say the least. This is a great date night location. We sat at the bar, but next time we will make a reservation just in case. The Bacon Tower presentation was spectacular and taste just as good as it looks. The food was amazing and our server/bartender was great. She had us talking and laughing all evening. I wasn't particularly thrilled with the fried green tomatoes but that is just me. The rest of the food had me wanting seconds and we shared enough appetizers to have a great tasting. In the summer I know it will be packed with the Beer Garden right outside. YES!!! You heard me right The Black Sheep is nestled right in the middle of a beer garden. A great evening is bound to be had!

SO and I hijacked my brother's romantic pre-birthday celebration and joined him and his wife at Black Sheep. TBSR has been on my Yelp list for a few years and this was the first opportunity to get out there. As others have numerously stated, the restaurant is in a renovated huge barn and it's gorgeous. Even with the impressive size, it's still intimate and cozy. Conversation with table companions can be had without competing with nearby patrons. SO and I were immediately greeted upon entrance prior to heading upstairs. Our server, Jennifer E, was attentive, accommodating and friendly. For drinks I ordered a glass of Dr.L, snappy peach and juicy citrus fruit highlighted by crisp mineral notes with a complex finish. My entree was the customer fav, Jambalaya Pasta: Campanella pasta, blackened chicken, shrimp, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions and andouille sausage tossed in a cajun style cream sauce. Took a bite of the chicken, it was dry, flavorless and sawdusty. Tasted a Campanella noodle with the sauce and it was a bland. Nope, not happy with this entree. Jennifer apologized and offered to bring me a menu to select another item, I declined and just ordered a small wedge salad sans the pickled onions. SO had ordered one with the pickled onions so I knew it was a safe bet. The salad was nothing special, I've had far better and more flavorful wedge salads. The SO also ordered the Mussel Pot, which he enjoyed. I thought the sauce was a tad too salty and the mussels were ok. My SiL ordered a salad with shrimp, can't remember which one. She said it was good and complimented the red she was drinking. And my brother ordered the Curry Chickpea Stew and thoroughly enjoyed it. For dessert both couples opted for the Bourbon Butter Cake. I thought the cake tasted like milder corn bread and the highlight was the bourbon caramel sauce and créme anglaise. So yummy. Would I return? Nope.

Overall very nice spot. Bartender on point. Good food served quickly and appropriately hot. Definitely returning during the spring season.

Ask the Community - The Black Sheep Restaurant

    Is it noisy?

It was noisy the night we went, which was on a Saturday but mainly because there was a concert going on outside right next-door at the stage

Is it dog friendly? Are dogs welcome?

If you are sitting outside it is dog friendly inside bar will not be because of the layout.

Does the restaurant take walk in or just reservation only?

They take walk-ins but it is best to make reservations. You can always grab a seat at the bar if possible.

Does this restaurant have a happy hour?

According to their website, they have HH Monday - Friday 4pm-7pm. Bar seating only. Hope you enjoy!

Does the Black Sheep Restaurant have a Coat rack?

Yes they have plenty of them!

Is this a fancy restaurant? Like suit and a tie or a fancy dress and heels?

No it's not. You can if you want to tho. You wouldn't be out of place, it's a nice restaurant but you don't HAVE to dress up. Something nice would be good tho

Is there heating outside on the terrace?

Yes, two of the outdoor sections have fire pits and the main area next to the bar is completely covered and closed off with heavy duty plastic curtains. That does leave about five or six tables outside that are without cover or heating so definitely…

Is there non alcoholic drinks for underage?

Yes. The make mocktails and they have tea, soda the normal stuff.

    Is it kid friendly?

Yes, we brought our 3 year old and it wasn't a problem, however, we made sure he behaved.
