    Chicken Piccata

Came here for dinner with my mom during the week. Reservations are still highly recommended even during the week. The service was friendly, but a little slow even though it wasn't super busy. Maybe it's the true Italian way to take your time and enjoy a good meal. I ordered the chicken piccata and it was delicious. The chicken was cooked to perfection, super tender and juicy. It's a little loud in the restaurant, but they do have outdoor seating with heaters available. I'd come back again next time in town. It's a nice little restaurant.

We arrived tonight for dinner at 6:00. Kelly the owner's daughter greeted us with warmth... a fabulous table and just pure class... so rare today... our first time ever there! Table was leveled... so rare today... beautifully set! Waiter was spot on ... took drink order... allowed ample time never rushed ... dinner delivered... absolutely perfect timing... from start to finish! Food better than anything experienced in five trips to Italy! I can say without hesitation or reservation, this has been the best dinning experience ever... and we have traveled the world!

Cute little place with excellent food. The staff were attentive and efficient. It's a huge menu but they nailed everything.

Good vegetarian option in Carmel as they can convert some foods to vegetarian. Had pasta Palermo and Fettucine Alfredo. Quick service and nice ambience.

The food at Giovanni's is delicious!!! We came here last year on a family trip and 3/5 of us got the Oaso Bucco and I couldn't recommend it enough. This trip I decided to be different and try pasta, I was torn between 3 dishes (bolognese, carbonara, and braised beef ravioli). I went with the beef ravioli and it was absolutely the right choice! If you're coming to Carmel, you should consider this spot for dinner. We will continue to come back. PS they have blue cheese olives with their martinis, win!!

Made early dinner reservations here for Saturday night and the place was pretty empty. I guess people eat late in Carmel. We ordered the Frito Misto appetizer which includes prawns, artichoke and calamari. Unfortunately our calamari was really tough and when we mentioned it to our server she graciously removed it from the check. Our entrees Frito de Mare and Goat Cheese Ravioli were delicious and visually appealing. To our surprise our sever brought us a delectable chocolate tiramisu to celebrate our wedding. This is a great spot to enjoy a relaxing meal in beautiful Carmel.

Stumbled across this gem after we canceled a different reservation for bad weather, and couldn't have been happier. Everything was great, we walked i and were instantly greeted and helped by Mr. Giovanni himself! The food all came out hot fresh and tasty. I would definitely go back and would recommend this place

Went here on our last night at Carmel and had a nice time. The carbonara (4/5) was good. The tiramisu (3.5/5) was fine but I just wish it had a stronger coffee taste. Service was nice too. A solid Italia place in Carmel.

O.M.G !!! This has got to be one of the best meals i have ever had in my entire life! Me and my sisters came out from sacramento to carmel to enjoy its beauty, and im so glad our hotel was nearby this place. We ordered calamari, meatballs, chicken alfredo, mama mia plate, and a lasagna plate + dessert. Service was amazing out servers name was george and he made our trip to carmel amazing. Everything came out nice and hot. Me and my sisters rate every meal we have together and this was a 100/100. I would love to come back thank you so much to everyone at this establishment.

Bistro Giovanni was located within 2 blocks from our hotel and we walked passed it a couple times walking to the main downtown area. We looked at the posted menu each time and said "we should eat here" each time. We were tired one evening and said let's go here since it was close by and the menu looked great. Nicely designed exterior entrance with comfortable lightly European designed interior. Pet friendly restaurant with heated exterior patio tables. We were seated right away by the hostess who I would have to say was extremely welcoming and gracious. I did not get her name but she made the evening fantastic as she brought drinks to us and did many other tasks you don't normally see a Hostess do. She's a hard worker for sure. That being said the entire restaurant staff seemed to hustle which showed us these folks are proud of their establishment. Started with drinks. Espresso Martini and Pear Cosmo. Very healthy pours for sure and they did not skimp on the booze. Very nice! We were still deciding on entrees but waiter asked if we wanted a starter he could get that going while we were deciding on the entrees. Really appreciated the effort so we didn't have to wait with an "empty table". Got their Steamers Clams and Mussels starter. Great flavor and the broth! You have to get bread to soak up all the juices. (they did charge $3 for bread, but it was worth it) They had an Osso Buco and Veal ravioli special we ordered and the Paella. Ravioli was perfectly cooked with just enough sauce. Don't like overly sauced pasta dishes. Paella was very good but just a bit of liquid in the pan. Probably could have cooked a little bit longer to absorb all the liquid. Regardless, plenty of mussels, clams, shrimp with just a few pieces of tender chicken. Note I think Mr. Giovanni wearing black hat and jacket was walking around the restaurant as well.

    Bruschetta (6) Calamari

My girlfriend and I visited Carmel's Bistro Giovanni for our second anniversary tonight, we had been once before on one of our first dates two years ago and loved it! Absolutely amazing: food, service, and atmosphere (added bonus for the real candle at the table.) We shared the bruschetta and calamari to start, both were great but the calamari was just amazing. For dinner, I had the Pasta Palermo and my girlfriend had the gnocchi. Both were also amazing. Finally, a thank you to the couple celebrating their 31st anniversary who bought our dinner for us! That was so sweet of you all, we really appreciate it! Also, we received a complimentary coffee chocolate cake (tiramisu-ish) for dessert as a celebration for our anniversary! It was also amazing. Highly highly recommend Carmel's Bistro Giovanni for anyone looking for a great Italian meal at a great location with great food and great service!

The Good: * We loved the location--down a set of stairs into a dimly lit, cozy space. * And speaking of cozy spaces, we love that every table is its own private booth. Nothing is more annoying than having to dine with strangers just inches away, in my opinion. * Service was, uhhh, interesting but passable. We actually liked the dude who was following up behind our server, as he seemed like a really cool guy with definite opinions on the food. * Make sure you order their unique take on chips and salsa! Their fried wonton wrappers paired with a deliciously unique ginger pico de gallo were fantastic. * The Fried Fish Cakes (a daily special, so they might not always be on the menu) were delicious and full of flavor. * We both loved our entrées; my Black Bean Halibut was cooked perfectly--tender and flaky--and I loved the funky fermented black bean sauce. Carissa is still talking about her Almond Sea Bass weeks later, so 'nuff said. * The Warm Tempura Banana Sundae was a bit odd but worked in a weird way. We normally skip dessert unless it's something unique, and this certainly fit the bill! The Meh: * Reservations are handled the old-fashioned way: via telephone. * No outdoor dining. The Ugly: * While being underground is part of their charm, as mentioned above, it is definitely not ADA-compliant. So if you or anyone in your party has difficulty traversing stairs, this probably isn't the place for you. Conclusion: Fantastic date-night spot with great service, ambiance, and food. Highly recommended.

Send me home hungry and bill me $$$ for 2, at least i get to stay in my PJs. I'm glad I stuck through with the original plan and was blown away by the endless mindfuck of plates that permanently altered my brain chemistry. In all seriousness, the menu itself doesnt seem too special: crabcakes, ceasar salad, creme brulee. Very unassuming and no real twists to it. BUT -- everything was executed to PER-FECT-SHUN and I found myself just shy of licking every. frikkin'. plate clean. No stone left unturned - in this case, not a single kernel of corn or garnish was left uneaten. I'll jump right to the food: - Half dozen raw oysters: honestly might be the more underwhelming dish of the meal only because the oysters didn't have much flavor. No brine. No sweet. The mignonette was so great though! it gave the oysters what it needed. Add a flake of salt and we're cookin'. - Caesar salad: Good all around. The assembly is what made it so over-the-top. The classic caesar but with ribbons of parm, light and fresh anchovies, whole thinly sliced loaf of crouton that held that salad up like a house of cards but crumbles to touch. I was picking up every crumb that tumbled off to the table and was audibly slurping the ribbons of parmesan. - Crabcakes: Not just another crabcake. The batter was crunchy but didn't make the dish heavy. a cooling and smooth avo creme. but OH MY GOD the grilled corn on the plate really made the dish shine! It added a nice sweet pop and smokiness that made the dish more complex. Not even assembled in a cute pile, just scattered little kernels on a plate got me out here picking them up one-by-one like a mere peasant dusting the sidewalk for nickels. yes, humble me chef. I had to apologize to the waitress who cleared my plate for how embarrassingly clean my plate was. - Thai mussels: A cliche of a mussel dish on every modern menu. I've had a lot of versions of this dish and this plate wowed me in that the mussels were simply cooked perfectly. the sauce was not thin, not too pulpy nor salty. The sauce actually penetrated the mussels. The mussels were fresh, and no empty shells, which is a low bar but so common to see these days. There might even be a couple straggling that i was able to fish from the bottom. Just a clean dish overall. The fries were the perfect accompaniment. The walls of the extra starchy and crispy fries grabbed alot of the sauce for dipping. So smart. - Beef cheeks: Perfect textures all around. It feels wrong to complain at this point but I wanted more unctuousness from the protein. The beef was actually a backdrop to the polenta and mushrooms. i wanted more fat, more melty gelatinous tendon bites. what it produced though was a perfect fancy gravy for the polenta - so creamy and perfectly seasoned. A leafy green here and there. The maitaki mushrooms were cooked perfectly, not greasy. I was really just scraping the plate for the polenta and grabbing a bite of beef cheeks as sauce. Not a bad way to live by any means. - Acai sorbet: I almost never order dessert at a restaurant. It tends to disspoint and overpriced but i have never trusted a chef so much with a full meal so of course i got TWO desserts. The acai was accompanied with raspberries and granola. Super fresh and light. The acai broke apart upon touch, didnt slide around eventhough it's on a plate, but the plate choice was nicely textured to grip the icy sorbet (WHY AM I THINKING ABOUT THEIR PLATE CHOICE??) Gronola was not clunky and added a (rice) crispiness rarely found in granola. Such great care and attention to detail. - Orange and Tarragon Creme Brulee: I looked at the creme brulee with distain. Why did we order a 2nd dessert when the acai sorbet was already perfect. Orange and tarragon sounds like they're trying to sound "complex" but rarely delivers on balance and impact. I cracked the torched sugar top and gave it a chance, knowing that i havent been dissapointed tonight yet... and CUE the hallelujah angels choirs. I looked my partner in the eye and audibly said "YUMMMM... TRY. THIS. NAOOO.". We switched from the acai to the creme brulee and never stopped until the sides were hallowed out and every crystal of torched sugar was scraped off the walls. The torched sugar top cracked with ease and stayed CRISPYYYY the whole time. The custard was smooth, thick but light, and packed with orange flavor that was fiercely tempered by the herbaceous tarragon. The one sliver of orange peel candy was not supposed to wow me with it's texture and left me wondering how they managed to get the cracker-like crackle without too much sugar and not leave it leathery?? What a way to end a meal. On my way home, I got a twinge of the orange peel left in my teeth and it instantly brought me back to the magic that was the Mission Bistro. and it was HOT.

The first thing they brought out was bread with olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette and, no joke, that ended up being my favorite bite of the meal. I was still thinking about the bread while eating everything else, which probably says more than I intended. The clam chowder was good and comforting, but if you've had chowder in Monterey, you know the bar is pretty high. The calamari was the bigger disappointment. It was chewy instead of tender and didn't have that light, crispy crunch that makes calamari worth ordering in the first place. By the time we finished the chowder and calamari we were full, but we still looked through the menu to see if anything tempted us. Honestly, nothing really stood out. The pasta prices felt steep, and there wasn't a dish that made us say, "Okay, we have to come back and try that." The only thing that really took away from the experience was how close the tables were. I could hear the people next to us whispering and accidentally became invested in a conversation I was never invited to. Overall, it's a cute place with great service and a nice ambiance that's worth checking out if you're visiting Carmel. I don't regret going, but I also don't see myself going back. On the bright side, at least the bread gave me something to remember. Someone in that kitchen deserves a raise for that basket alone.

The fish and chips were inedible--the fish was gray on the inside and didn't look appetizing at all. The chicken sandwich came with wilted, brown lettuce and a tomato that was clearly spoiled. It had a sour taste and a foul odor that immediately ruined the entire sandwich. When we brought it to our server's attention, there wasn't even an apology. Instead of addressing the overall issue, he simply brought out another tomato. The chicken quesadilla was shockingly small, looked like something from a kids' menu, and had almost no flavor. Even the beer tasted off. At that point, it felt like every item that came to the table had a problem. The most surprising part was that the bathroom seemed cleaner and better maintained than the food being served. We spent around $140 and left wondering what exactly we paid for. To make matters worse, several members of my family felt sick after eating here. Between the poor food quality, lack of concern from the staff, and overall experience, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
