Comfy. Homey. Good hospitality. I recently treated my mom to a spa getaway in Carmel-by-the-Sea for her birthday. We needed a good place to eat the night we arrived, and Yelp led us to Vesuvio. We were among the last diners close to their closing time, but you couldn't tell by the service. They helped us feel right at home, even taking family photos of us and tolerating my Dad's silly poses. He especially loved the eclectic decor. He liked his spaghetti & meatball dish less, but Mom and I really enjoyed our braised lamb "osso buco" specials. I'd definitely visit again for a hearty meal when I'm able to splurge. The ambiance was nice and the service was pretty good. The food was very tasty, but I got food poisoning from it and had a horrible night (thankfully, I was the only one in my party who did). But the most disappointing realization what that the restrooms are not ADA compliant. We had a member of our party in a wheelchair and their (newly remodeled) restroom was so poorly designed that no wheelchair would fit inside any of the stalls, and when we left the wheelchair anywhere in front of a stall it would either block people from accessing the sink, the entry door, or the other stalls. One of the stalls was an ambulatory stall and had some grab bars, but would not fit a wheelchair or a helper inside with the handicapped person. Management did not know that the restrooms were not wheelchair accessible. They probably got a variance allowing them to pass inspection without an ADA accessible restroom because they are across the street from a public restroom. Which sounds delightful, having to go across the street in the rain, just to be able to use a public restroom. read more

My party of six were seated here on a Saturday evening for our reservation @6:45 PM. We had received our drinks and appetizers quick, but had to wait almost an hour for the main meal. To be fair, everyone was watching the Argentina vs. Switzerland soccer game on the TV. We were seated at the left back corner of the restaurant by the fireplace with no access to seeing the game. It did get very hot quick so we requested our waiver to turn it off and crack the windows for us. I do wish we were given an option to choose where to sit though. After we left we've realized there was outdoor/rooftop seating. I rarely eat vegan food but the pesto pasta that I had was AMAZING. The cocktail did also taste quite plain, but I love how the edible flower adds to the presentation. The rooftop bar is nice and warm, even when the night is cool. The service is prompt and the servers are kind. There is ample table space and seating without being too crowded. That's the most I can say, though. The patio was full of loud Top100 music that didn't really match the vibe and made it hard to have conversations. The food was lackluster. Did I just pay $30 for Chili's pasta? There's such an opportunity for this place to be better. They have a good location and ample space. Hopefully the quality can increase. read more

We were in town for a long weekend, while we had some great meals in Carmel, this was the only spot where we made reservations prior to the trip. I will tell you, it was well worth it. She was kind, professional, efficient, and an altogether joy. She was there when we needed her, but didn't hover The menu offers most all of the classic Italian entrees, appetizers, and desserts. They also have plenty of wine, beer, cocktails, and non-alcoholic drink options. Everything looked and sounded amazing. I am a self-proclaimed pizza connoisseur, and their pizza was delicious. I had their sausage and peppers pizza, and I was pleasantly surprised that they used sweet peppers which made for a semi-sweet and savory experience. Everything was tasty, and it was a nice way to unwind after a day of walking and sightseeing Some tips: I would recommend making a reservation. This place is popular, and there were often people waiting towards the entrance for their tables. There's plenty of tables, they are just in high demand. I dined in on a Thursday night on the rooftop! There were heat lamps and fire pits for warmth, along with some cozy lighting and their own bar. There was also indoor seating on the first level with its own bar. You do not need reservations for the rooftop. We came in for light apps, drinks, and dessert. Eddie was our waiter and while he was very busy, he made sure to check in and make sure we were taken care of. The Three Tenors drink and the pistachio cannoli was a stand out for me. We tried: Arancini: I really enjoyed this. Crispy, tasty, and lots of flavor. Meatball lollipops: This was tasty, and good. It tasted like meatballs with marinara sauce. Pistachio Cannoli: This was so good. I wish it had just a bit more chocolate sauce. It had a nice balance of sweetness without being overpowering. Creme Brulee: This was good. I don't remember much about it being special. Vesuvio Sour The Three Tenors: my absolute favorite drink of the night. I wanted an espresso martini but also wanted to be able to sleep that night haha. Vesuvio is a super nice restaurant with a nice ambiance. The tables are kinda packed inside so a bit hard to move around. To start we got the garlic bread and it was pretty good, really crispy. All the pastas were very saucy and not dry. Love that they had vegetarian options and were able to make items veg too. The ravioli was good and a bit sweet. We got asparagus as a side and it had breadcrumbs on top. Service was also great here. read more

Well, we had to ask 4-5 different people for service. Another business that charged us a different price than the stated menu price. First the (new) waitress that gave us the bill said that the owner changed the Steakhouse burger from $20 to $23 and that she will NOT honor the menu price. Then she came back and said the extra $3 was due to a split plate (that no one asked for). She also charged us an extra $4 for 4 small slices of bread, which was not disclosed either. While visiting Carmel we came across this delicious restaurant. I love me some authentic Italian food. So any chance I have to try a new restaurant I'll take it. And sure enough this mom and pop Italian restaurant hit the spot. Every dish was delicious the service was amazing. They had a wide variety of wines to choose from. A sophisticated ambiance with classical music playing made the experience even better. I came here with my partner and we sat and dined on the rooftop. This place is a must stop if you're in Carmel. I thought their cocktails, which were The Drop and Starlight Crush were delicious (and strong). The real standout was the food. We shared their vodka sauce pasta and the pizza fangool which were delicious. The portions were just right and the food came out hot and fast. We also got the brownie and chocolate martini for dessert which were real knockouts. Service was fairly good considering how busy the restaurant was (deservedly so) and our server was attentive and very friendly. We started with the wonderful Peach "Caprese," featuring Frog Hollow Farm organic peaches, stracciatella and basil--what a fabulous medley of super fresh seasonal flavors! We also enjoyed the Strawberry + Gorgonzola Salad with arugula, candied walnuts, red onion and strawberry shrub, another terrific combination of ingredients. Of course, we had to try the 100-year-old family recipe Garlic Bread, which was light, crunchy and absolutely delicious. For our entrée, we shared the scrumptious Pink Vodka "Jackie-O," with rigatoni, creamy vodka tomato sauce, pancetta, Calabrian chili and sweet peas. We finished our meal with Pepe's Signature Cream Pie, featuring fresh strawberries and Bavarian cream--the perfect ending to a wonderful dinner. Everything was generously portioned and easy to share and enjoy. What I appreciated were all of the unique and amazingly tasty dishes I've not seen at other restaurants. Cocktails are terrible - what bartender serves flat tonic water ? Draft beer is limited to 2 rotating taps. Same taps as last year. Their Pizzaiolo needs a refresher course. Their pizza margherita 2-3 years ago was fantastic. Slowly declining to slightly better than frozen. No more mussels and clams. The ONLY things going for it is the rooftop bar and service. We want to add that the Vesuvio-Chef Pepe's staff are very helpful and warm folks to deal with. Two days after our last visit, we discovered that we'd left a shopping bag behind. My best friend and I came to have dinner and the food was great but what really made me upset was our server Hector. We both had order the "Lava Candy" cocktail drink and didn't realize how spicy it was going to be. I kindly asked him if we can get the drink menu back to order a different drink since the one we got was too spicy. I was willing to pay for both drinks, he offered to have the drinks remade which we both agreed to. He came back not that long after with the same drinks and only reason we notice was because of the tangerine candy that was on the stick. We came for a nice dinner while in Carmel. This place was amazing. It brought me back to when I went to Italy. I ordered the fangool pizza which had, cheese, cupped pepperoni, and hot honey. I put the ranch on the side. It was delicious and crust was made just right thin and soft but still had some nice crisp. My husband had the lasagna and it it tasted homemade from the sauce, meat, meat and pasta. We had the tiramisu as a dessert to finish the night. Our server was very knowledgeable about the food and recommended some great options. The atmosphere was very intimate and had beautiful pictures. After a not-so-great experience at Vesuvio's sister restaurant Little Napoli, we visited Vesuvio to finish out Happy Hour at their rooftop bar. We arrived shortly after opening, and made our way up to the very spacious rooftop bar. Our server was absolutely excellent. I wish I had gotten his name, but he was a young latino man with tattoos on both arms, working the afternoon of Monday, March 2, 2026. He was very friendly, engaging, and often came over to check on us and see if we needed another round of drinks or food. We were just there for Happy Hour, and after a couple rounds of drinks, meatballs, and ribs, from their Happy Hour Menu, we were pretty well set for the evening. We sat near one of their decorate fire heaters on an elevated portion and one of the gals came over to light it for us without us having to ask. It was a beautiful day, and as the sun started to set, their outdoor lights came up. The restaurant down below is really pretty, and I would absolutely return to have dinner downstairs. What really made this 5 stars for me was the service from the young man who served us. He had a great personality and treated us like we were regulars. My spouse asked if they had Tuaca (an italian liquor) and he initially said no, but still checked with the bartender just to be sure, which really made us feel welcome. We had the BEST birthday dinner last night here at Vesuvios. It was pretty busy so we made the risky move to eat upstairs on the roof. It was a bit cold but the heaters and fire made it perfect. The ambiance is amazing and overall was a good night. However it turned out GREAT when we got our food (quicker than expected as well) This food was amazing. Crab ravioli was my favorite. Really enjoyed the vibe and food at this place around 8 PM on a Saturday! Ordered drinks, two appetizers, and an entree to share. We didn't need to wait for our table. Came here after making a detour on the way to Paso Robles in the evening since we realized that everything in Paso closes early (before 10pm) for dinner pretty much. Very fancy but reasonably priced for such a superb restaurant. We made reservations and were glad we did - this place is super popular and the waitstaff even wear Ferrari labeled clothes! I ordered their Chianti and Fritto Misto di Mare appetizer and Ossobuco (lamb, which is a bit different than the usual veal shank). Very delicious. This place gets very busy but there's also a rooftop bar which looked amazing from the street area. A must try in the Carmel/Monterey area and I will return again if I am visiting the area. We decided to eat on the roof top and it was such a cool vibe! Had good music and all the propane heaters and fire pits were on so it wasn't even chilly. The service was excellent! Our server was so attentive and friendly. He was super cool and fast. The food even comes fast and it was perfect timing from when we received our appetizer to when we received our main entrees. As soon as our drinks became empty he would check on us right away to see if we wanted another. Every encounter with other staff members was great as well. The food is incredible and every dish we ordered was delicious! The fangool pizza was the best pizza i have ever had! The crust was unlike any I have ever tried. The honey on the pizza is a winner! Brings out all the ingredients so well! The scatinni farms artichoke was delicious loved how it was cooked and came with such a good dip. Eggplant parmigiana is a hefty portion and delicious! It was layered so was thick and had perfect amount of cheese and sauce with a nice crisp, the alfredo pappardelle noodles were cooked perfectly. The pistachio cannoli was amazing! The pistachio cream was so light and creamy not too heavy and the cannoli was perfectly crisp. Great cocktails and cocktail menu. Prices average for the area. Nice menu with lots of options. First of all the ambiance was lovely. The rooftop bar with the fireplace is perfect for a chill evening. We got two different appetizers, the garlic bread and the Pepe board. I wouldn't recommend either personally, the bread was cold and the board way overpriced for what was served. The entrees, however, were very good, specifically the truffle pie and the crab ravioli. Drinks were also good, and quite strong which I appreciate. The desserts were also very tasty On our way out we did see a cockroach inside. I'm not the only review to point this out, and there's likely a pest problem. Vesuvio felt like a place resting on its laurels. People are in and out of Carmel-by-the-Sea all the time. They need a lot of meals and by serving Italian favorites like pizza and pasta, sooner or later, we will be dining there. I also quickly came to learn that this is one of many in town eateries owned by Chef Pepe and I think that aids in its complacency. We were seated on the raised platform in the back of the restaurant, the table closest to the kitchen. It got awkward real quick when we realized that just on the other side of the railing was where all the rooftop dining orders were being kept until they went upstairs for service. Like we could touch the plates if we wanted to. It felt weird knowing that those people's food sits there, out in the elements unattended, as they wait to be taken away. It's also disappointing that restaurants like this don't start you with bread anymore. We did a bruschetta starter, and I got a Margherita pizza and tiramisu. The server never checked on us during the meal. If he had, we would have been able to tell him the pizzas were completely undercooked. It was also the first time I have ever not liked the variety of basil chosen to top a pizza. When he did come to move us on to dessert, he still didn't ask how everything was. I think Vesuvio will continue to be a popular place to eat, but I certainly will be looking for other options next time I'm in Carmel. Carmel is also a very inconsistent place when it comes to payment. Some places are cash only, some card only, some will have a cash total and a card total on the bill for you to choose between. Alright, who reading this has actually used the expression... "Third times' the Charm?" Anybody?? O.k. Fine...I'll go first. I have!! Well in case you haven't used it and are curious to know what it means, let me tell you what googles definition of this expression is: "The third time something is attempted, luck is sure to result" Basically, if the 1st time and then again on the 2nd time you attempt something and it fails, or doesn't go as planned, the expression states that the 3rd time around... Luck will be on your side! Well Luck be the Lady tonight! Because both my very first time in Carmel-by-the-Sea back in 2014 and now on our most recent trip in October 2024, a third attempt was not required to have a little Charm! Let. Me. Elaborate. My wife and I first came to Carmel back in 2014. Little did we know then, but we would return several more times to this quaint, ocean side town in the years to come. On our most recent visit, ten years later, we would return yet again, but this time bringing our 3 beautiful young daughters with us so they too could experience the magic of this town. On our very first visit, when it was just the two of us love birds, we came across a little restaurant with an upstairs, outdoor rooftop terrace known as Vesuvio. We had drinks, sat by the fire pit, enjoyed the view and for the first time ever we had Risotto Arancini Balls that we would simply never forget. Let's just say...there was something Charming about Vesuvio that we would always remember. As mentioned, we returned to Carmel many other times either with friends, or just the two of us, but for some odd reason, we never made it back to Vesuvio. Well in October 2024... That. All. Changed. My wife looked at me and it went something like this: My wife: "Hey remember those Risotto Arancini appetizers that we got on our first visit to Carmel?" Me: (in my head) "Umm duhh, how could I forget?" (The words that actually came out) "umm you mean that one place where we sat on the rooftop, had drinks, and had those yummy risotto ball appetizers?" Wife: "Yeah, that one! Let's go back there!" Me: "you're the boss" And. Off. We. Went. Mind you, it was a Saturday evening... The weather was nice... Downown Carmel was hoppin'... And we had NO reservations... Dun. Dun. Dunnnnn. Oh wait! Remember earlier when I said 'Luck be the Lady tonight??' Well I'm no Lady, but luck was definitely on our side! We pulled up, the restaurant was slammed, but we still took our chances. I talked to the young gal at the front and a reservation at 730pm was a no show! So They were OUT. & We were IN. Once seated, we picked up our menus, and prayed to the man upstairs that they still had those Risotto balls... I began perusing the Antipasta section and this is what I saw: Garlic Bread, meatball lollipops, fried artichoke crocchette, burrata, fritto misto... (All while Thinking to myself) "crap I'm not seeing them" But I pressed on... Sauté Damiani, Baby Back Ribs... And then suddenly... There. They. Were. 'Saffron. Risotto. Arancini' Hallelujah! And while the kids got their bread, olive oil + balsamic vinegar on... My wife and I were in our happy place reminiscing over our prized Arancini balls! This, accompanied by a bottle of Italian White, Truffled Gnocchi, Risotto Calabrese which had prawns, scallops, spicy salumi (not salami), & a lobster reduction... And you know we got Tiramisu for dessert.. We were this close to just selling all of our belongings, and getting on the next flight to move to the Mother Land ;) Hey, YOLO! In all seriousness, Vesuvio has a Charm, a fun vibe, and a humble, hospitable approach that makes you feel proud to be there in the moment, celebrating life and eating damn good food! So...
